This week Artsy and I dove into the fantasy world of 2018's Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms. The simplest way to describe this movie is a tale of two coming of age stories: one of a baby boy into a man, and one of an "ageless" young elf-like woman into a caregiver and mature woman. Usually I like to give a bit more in these summaries, but I think this movie is worth the watch, even with it not being my usual choice in anime. Want to join us live? Ok look as well all know it's been a minute since a whole con thing as happened and it's hard getting back on this whole forced metaphor of a bicycle thing. At any rate, a fantastic time. While we were there, we had the wonderful opportunity to talk to some amazing folks. This time we got the chance to chat with Xanthe Huynh! Hey film buds,Quite the long title, isn't it? Well it fits because we have quite the episode for y'all. This week we continue to highlight the achievements of Women in Film by traveling across the Pacific to review and discuss Women in Anime. The popularity of Anime has grown significantly over the last decade or so, inspiring generations of fans from every background. Behind the camera, much like here in America, there is still somewhat of a limited range of women in above the line roles like Director and Producer. In this episode we're joined by Anime experts, Tori and Austin, from Third Impact Anime Podcast, to discuss two directors: Naoko Yamada and Mari Okada. Our first film is Naoko Yamada's A Silent Voice, based on a manga of the same name. The film tells the story of teenagers struggling with their feelings about themselves, each other, and the passage of time. It's an intimate, slice of life story that tries to condense a sprawling anime into a concise story. We talk about how well it works as an adaptation, the art style, and Yamada's work overall.Second, we're looking at Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms by Mari Okada. In a reversal from the grounded reality of A Silent Voice, Maquia tells a decades long story in a land of myth and magic, with a different Art Direction. We'll look at some of the similar themes in both stories, and whether original narratives or adaptations are more common in the Anime world.Beyond our reviews we also have a special announcement from Paul, What We're Watching, and more. You can find Austin on Twitter and Letterboxd, and you can also find Tori on Twitter and Letterboxd. If you haven't already, be sure to check out last week's episode as well as Madelaine Davis's "The Women on Screen, the Woman in the Mirror".Thanks y'all,The BudsEpisode GuideIntro - 00:00A History of Women in Anime - 04:08 A Silent Voice Clip - 15:43A Silent Voice Review - 16:18Maquia Clip - 50:21Maquia Review - 50:57Paul's Announcement, What We're Watching, and More - 01:26:24Total Runtime - 01:41:09Be a Friend to the Film Buds:thefilmbuds.comthefilmbudspodcast@gmail.compatreon.com/thebudsthefilmbuds.bandcamp.com@filmbuds on Twitter@thefilmbudspodcast on InstagramPaul's Letterboxd

Aspect ratios are something I've often taken for granted when it comes to anime; although I acknowledged them, I didn't necessarily look into their importance and their impact on the concept of space within film. In this episode, I will be looking into what 'space' is in the context of filmmaking and how aspect ratios play a big part in warping our perceptions of certain anime. What is the beauty of the 16:9 aspect ratio in anime films today? What is the purpose of 21:9 (2.35:1), if it can be perceived as 'restrictive'? Is the concept of space in anime under attack? This will all be debated in this session. Main Anime Discussed: Your Name (2016), Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms (2018), Spirited Away (2001), Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu-hen, Yozakura Quartet: Tsuki ni Naku (2013). No, your eyes do not deceive you. This week our sister show Literary Loitering is taking over Cinema Eclectica, and to mark the occasion Rob, Graham, Andrew and Sarah are reviewing the latest smash blockbuster from the Lumiere brothers, Arrival of a Train at a Station. Before that, they discuss some recent film news including the Hollywood Reporter's secret Oscar voter, a bizarrely (or brilliantly?) cast new version of Cinderella, and discover that Universal might just have cracked their monster universe. And by "cracked" we mean "broke". Reviews include Netflix Tay doco Miss Americana, anime fantasy Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, Celine Sciamma's trans coming-of-age drama Tomboy, and we review Harpoon again just because we can. There's also a quiz on the many weird ways movies have been retitled overseas. If you like the podcast, send some support by visiting our PATREON (http://www%2Cpatreon.com/thegeekshow) .
