The crew spent the last few weeks reading E.K. Johnston's Queen's Shadow, and we have some thoughts! Topics discussed include: the most poorly served characters in all of Star Wars, the rampant sexism in the Republic, the frustrating names of Padme's handmaidens, and how R2D2 is basically a Roomba. Yeah, we said it.

Mild spoilers in this episode! The final third of Queen's Peril by E.K. Johnston runs concurrently with The Phantom Menace. Apart from a plotline that fills in a backstory hinted at in Queen's Shadow, most of this section serves one of two purposes. One of these purposes is to give us a look at characters from the movie, in scenes that play like moments from the cutting room floor. Mind you, this isn't a criticism - a scene with Darth Maul scouting Theed Palace prior to the arrival of the Jedi isn't one that was needed for the movie, but is a terrific addition from a novelization perspective. The other purpose is to complete character arcs that were begun in the pre-Phantom Menace part of the book. That focuses primarily on Sabé, who is Padmé's number one handmaiden, even though Sabé's primary talent has been playing second fiddle - pun intended. I'll dig into all of the above and more on the show today... Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Queen's Peril, by E.K. Johnston, is the prequel to last year's Queen's Shadow, and a breezy read best suited for Padme, handmaiden, and prequel fans. It also does something remarkable - delivers a story about teenage girls learning to bond and achieve in positions of influence, and against the backdrop of major galactic events. That said, from a plot perspective, nothing of major consequence happens until about two-thirds of the way through the book, when the narrative lines up with the events of The Phantom Menace. That section is where almost all the book's drama takes place, and while it's interesting to see some more detailed and occasionally additional perspectives on that chapter of the Skywalker Saga, I do wish Padme and her handmaidens could have had a significant origin-story mission together that didn't rely on an existing chapter in the canon. But it is fun, and for completists who are interested in the beginning of Padme's reign and how the handmaidens came to be a part of her team, there will be plenty of intriguing details to absorb. The book also dallies with interludes featuring a variety of characters, and their actions prior to The Phantom Menace as well. On today's show, we'll wrap up the review, and we'll dig into the details on subsequent episodes. Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Sure, the title sounds like clickbait, but there is bound to be a big shocker in this final installment of the Skywalker saga. What do you think it will be? We give our thoughts on what the big shocker will be, but as always we want to hear your thoughts.0:02:47 The Cantina (Star Wars News/General Discussion): The Last Jedi gets different reactions from Star Wars fans, and while we enjoyed the movie, we know that it isn't a perfect movie by any stretch of the imagination. However, Rian Johnson gets a redemption with his new trilogy, and while it is a ways away we explore what it would take for fans to forgive him for The Last Jedi, and what story the trilogy may tell.John Williams has begun scoring the Rise of Skywalker, and he loves the movie! We talk about his experiences with this movie, as well as his music from all the Star Wars movies, and how this might be the end of his illustrious career.Since we know of one trilogy being made, another one has been announced, we talk about what era we would explore if we were each given the green light on making our own Star Wars trilogy of films.0:19:52Duel of the Fates (Face Off Questions):Palpatine vs. Plagueis------who would you rather see in The Rise of Skywalker? The Rise of Skywalker must have a main villain other than Kylo Ren, and with the release of the teaser trailer it looks like it might be the return of our beloved Emperor Palpatine. This fact alone is mindblowing, but it begs the question who will win? We debate this in an exciting edition of Duel of the Fates!0:38:25From a Certain Point of View (Featured Topic):Should Star Wars change with the times? As we move forward in time, and new generations of fans are added to the Star Wars fandom on an almost daily basis, some have argued that Star Wars should change with the times, and work harder to reflect the issues, challenges, and values of the current generation. Many Star Wars fans, including the team here at FANgirl, have long urged the franchise to release a novel centered on Padmé and her political career. That moment has finally arrived from Disney Lucasfilm Press, in the form of the Young Adult novel Queen’s Shadow by E.K. Johnston, who previously wrote the YA novel Ahsoka. As usual, we begin with our meta segment, in which we consider influential forces and figures that have shaped the Star Wars franchise. Part of what makes this Padmé novel special is that Johnston is one of the first Star Wars creators from the Prequel Trilogy generation to attain the opportunity to contribute as a professional. In interviews, she shares that she first saw The Phantom Menace on her fifteenth birthday, and immediately built her fandom around Padmé, Sabé, and the rest of Amidala’s handmaidens. From fanfic to her career as a published author to books about Ahsoka and Padmé, Johnston brings priorities, values, and emphases to her Star Wars work that differ greatly from most contributors from the Original Trilogy generation. As even more peers from her generation join the franchise, Star Wars will broaden with new perspectives from new voices. We share our reactions to Queen’s Shadow in the storytelling segment. Padmé and Sabé are the principal characters, but the book has a lot of other elements to discuss, as well. In addition to the handmaidens from the Prequel Trilogy films, the novel includes appearances from characters in The Clone Wars animated series and connections to Claudia Gray’s novel Leia: Princess of Alderaan. Also noteworthy are several of Johnston’s new characters, as well as the variety of different forms of representation she includes in the story. For the world-building segment, we discuss the recently revealed details about Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, opening later this year at that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge expansions at Disneyland (May 31) and Disney World (August 29). From cast member costumes to food and beverage options, in-universe toys and attire for purchase, the Imagineers have developed an impressive range of immersive qualities for the theme parks. Fortunately, Disney has anticipated the high demand for the openings, and has several guest-flow control measures prepared to keep the experience from being overwhelmed by dense crowds. April brings the Star Wars Celebration convention in Chicago. Hyperspace Theories will be there, so check back for our coverage from the event. Related Links E.K. It's been 4 years since the TOPPS Star Wars Card Trader app was unleashed upon the world. Since it's the reason we're here as a podcast, we give it its due. Rhett literally phones in the episode, accidentally doubling as our "from the WWII front lines" correspondent. We discuss cards that have been under represented in the app:- "Capes of Calrissian": when will we get this set?- Lack of baby Ewok cards: only seen in classic art that we could find.- Abandonment of Lott Dod base cards- Poggle rainbow check-in (spoiler: not going well)Other Star Wars things we're liking:- The two-foot Super Star Destroyer expansion for the Star Wars: Armada miniatures game- Hasbro's massive Jabba's Sail Barge- Michael shares how he was moved to tears by the new novel, Queen's Shadow. We conjecture the collective noun for a group of handmaiden ("tale").We also discover there are a lot of characters in the Star Wars universe that have double-g in their names.
Queen's Shadow. 1999 introduced the world to a whole new era of the Star Wars universe and it came with many characters that helped an entirely new generation fall in love with the saga, one of these characters was Padmé Amidala and now the transition between The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones has been illuminated by author E.K. Johnston. In this episode of The 602 Club Matthew Rushing and Christy Morris are joined by Bruce Gibson to talk about Queen's Shadow. We discuss expectations, queen to senator, personal Padmé, finding a faction, handmaidens, story and our ratings. In movies, they'd call it a post-credits scene. It's an apt comparison for the epilogue of E.K. Johnston's "Queen's Shadow," since the epilogue doesn't wrap up the events of the novel - it takes place several years afterward. And it hints at some juicy new storytelling opportunities. Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Join the community at http://Patreon.com/sw7x7 to get access to bonus episodes and other insider rewards.***
Not only does Queen's Shadow tie into other Star Wars stories, it also features surprise character appearances, deepened appreciations, and - most shocking of all - the revelation of an attempt to right a wrong that didn't work out (but could have changed the course of the galaxy if it had). Padmé Amidala Naberrie is a woman of strong character and unwavering leadership, yet her tragic end betrays much of what we came to love about this powerful queen in The Phantom Menace. E.K. Johnston’s new novel, Queen’s Shadow, seeks to recover much of what we loved about Amidala as she transitions from elected queen to Naboo’s representative in the Galactic Senate. We discuss what the book does to add to Padmé and her handmaiden’s legacy, how our expectations were subverted, and why the unassuming, episodic structure of the book is by far its biggest asset. We greatly enjoyed this novel and we hope you enjoy our review!0:00 - Introduction3:35 - How E.K. On March 10, author of Ahsoka and Queen's Shadow, E.K. Johnston, and the voice actress responsible for Padme Amidala in The Clone Wars and Forces of Destiny, Catherine Taber, were in Orlando, FL for a book signing and discussion at Barnes and Noble. Ryan Donoho and Daniel Berry of The Force Cast conducted the event and here is the full 30-minute discussion. Enjoy!
SPOILERS FOR QUEEN'S SHADOW - In this quick transmission I speculate on how the ending of Queen's Shadow by E. K. Johnston may affect future Star Wars storytelling
Mild spoilers continue in my discussion of E.K. Johnston's Star Wars: Queen's Shadow. We know from Attack of the Clones and the Clone Wars cartoon series that Nute Gunray holds a grudge against Padme Amidala. Johnston's novel fills in more of that backstory, and how it affects Padme's first year in the Senate. Plus, the fate of Captain Panaka, and a Battlefront II tie-in... Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Join the community at http://Patreon.com/sw7x7 to get access to bonus episodes and other insider rewards.***
Spoiler review of the Star Wars Resistance episode "Descent," as well as a non-spoiler look at "Queen's Shadow" by E.K. Johnston and a recap of #RebelsRemembered.
Mild spoilers in this episode of the show, where I talk about a character that makes an unexpected appearance in Star Wars: Queen's Shadow. It's particularly interesting because this character has appeared more in the last five years in Star Wars stories than in the 35 years before that. And that character's fate may not be set in stone... Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Join the community at http://Patreon.com/sw7x7 to get access to bonus episodes and other insider rewards.***
E.K. Johnston's novel Star Wars: Queen's Shadow hits bookshelves today, and what's especially remarkable about the book is how it deepens our understanding of the many roles played by Padme's handmaidens - and how that affects our experiences with the handmaidens in other Star Wars media, too. Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Join the community at http://Patreon.com/sw7x7 to get access to bonus episodes and other insider rewards.***

The hosts of "Tarkin's Top Shelf" sit-down to talk about worldbuilding in Star Wars. Mark and Becca discuss the growing galaxy of Star Wars between the books and on screen. In other words, the future of Star Wars is bright! In fact, so bright that the galaxy far, far away is extending well beyond the unknown regions. Well, from a certain point of view, of course. Star Wars is worldbuilding with additions like The Mandalorian and the Cassian Andor series and the animation shows of Star Wars Resistance, and the return of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. No to mention, more books like The Queen's Shadow and Master and Apprentice, and The Alphabet Squadron. Oh, and let's not forget the new Vader's Castle comics series. Yes, it would appear that there is no end in sight for Star Wars and that's a good thing, right? After all, these new extensions will only enhance the stories from a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
