Prophecy Radio episode #101 discusses the latest Rick Riordan Presents book, Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem by Roseanne A. Brown. We also break down the latest Rick Riordan news, including updates on Chalice of the Gods, the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes, and more. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:44) Don't forget that Serwa Boateng 2 is out in the world now. Read Riordan wants you to meet the god of death, Owuo. If you couldn't make it to any of the Chalice of the Gods book tour stops, be sure to register (FOR FREE) for the Flip event taking place on October 5. If you're going to NYCC, be sure to stop by Disney Publishing to check out what they have on their shelves. Read Riordan also posted an article about Ganymede. He is, in fact, the himbo in question. Could the chalice be used to kill a god!? A mortal stealing the chalice just seems boring. Karen gets very defensive of poor Ganymede. Suddenly, Iris or Hebe stealing the chalice seems too obvious. Speaking of, Read Riordan also wants us to meet Hebe. Hebe Jeebies seems like the Lotus Hotel and Casino all over again. We find out that Hebe is the one with the chickens. As always, we toss out some wild and unhinged theories. ONE of them has to be close to the truth, don't you think!? Kristen also provides us with a quick update on the strikes. The WGA is meeting with the AMPTP as we speak! Thank goodness Drew Barrymore backpedeled. Did you know Dancing with the Stars is a WGA show because we sure didn't! (And neither did Matt Walsh.) We'll bring you more news next week, but things are looking up! Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem by Roseanne A. Brown (00:22:32) It's time to talk about Serwa Boateng 2, so let's kick this off with Karen's review of the book. We're starting off with a spoiler-free section but it will ruin the surprises from the first book if you haven't read that already! What is this book about? Where did we leave Serwa at the end of the last one? How did this one compare to the first Serwa book? It should come as no surprise that we are BIG fans. As always, there are a lot of important themes to discuss. Poor Serwa is dealing with a lot of change in her life right now. It's gotta be tough resisting the urge to drink blood when you're a vampire. Auntie Effie is super different than we expected her to be. Can we blame her for hating the Abomofuo? Okay, let's talk about Serwa's ETERNAL NEMESIS, Declan Amankwah. Was anyone (other than Serwa) surprised she had a little crush on him? We thought their interactions were mostly pretty cute, but Kristen is VERY angry with some of Declan's life choices. The spoiler section starts at 00:50:54. What did we think about Nana Bekoe's backstory? Funtunfunefu-Denkyemfunefu ended up being a delightful part of this book. Serwa's motives might've been duplicitous, but we liked the scenes where she hangs out with Declan. Except when they had to fight off that giant bird. That's a giant NOPE from us. Can the cobra come back for Book 3? Serwa was pretty clever in the way she escaped from the adze. The trampoline chat was so tragic yet so important for SO many reasons. Oh no, it's a trap! Kristen is very angry with Declan, but WAIT! It'll get WORSE! Serwa's punishment is…going back to her parents. Did her parents make the right choice in hiding her true nature from her? We're SO proud of Serwa's maturity in the scene where her friends confront her. Did we guess how Serwa was going to escape into the Underworld? Please mark us down as totally intimidated by Owuo. Did Serwa make the right choice by striking a deal with the god of death? Why was Nana Bekoe able to trick Declan into playing the Midnight Drum? Let's just say we are NOT fans of Serwa's grandmother. Will Nana Bekoe come back for Auntie Effie? We're very, very mad at Declan. But also…maybe we can find some sympathy for him, too? Serwa's friends stand up to her again, and we're not mad at all. Serwa found the perfect solution to the problem of her bargain with Death. I'm sorry, her mother is WHAT!? What can we expect in Serwa Boateng's Guide to Saving the World? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 102, in which we'll tackle the first THREE chapters of Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan! So many gay men struggle to find their passion, purpose, and to be happy. But, why? It's actually quite simple. They do nothing. They try a little, don't get the quick fix, and then give up. Harker Jones has never given up, but that's not the only reason he has constantly lived in his passion. Today he reveals the other stuff he has done to stay in his creative passions, even as a gay guy over 40. About Harker Harker Jones grew up on a dirt road in Michigan in a town so small it doesn't to this day have a traffic light. Upon completion of college he found his way to the entertainment hub of Los Angeles where, as a queer writer, he has completed the Amazon #1 best-selling gay love story Until September and nine screenplays, revealing truths through humor and horror. His short thrillers Cole & Colette and One-Hit Wonder have been accepted into 60 film festivals combined, garnering several awards. He was managing editor of Out magazine for seven years, spent two in gay porn, and worked at Disney Publishing. He's a member of both the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle and Mensa, loves cats and carbs and would like to be a one-hit wonder but would settle for being killed in a slasher movie. On this episode, The Barretta Brothers take questions from the Live Youtube chat, with illustrator and author, Jay Fossgit.   ABOUT OUR HOSTS: Gene Barretta & Bill Barretta “What are they up to now?” That was the popular question around their house and neighborhood while growing up. It was not unusual to see Gene and Bill dressed up in homemade costumes – filming Super 8mm dramas – attempting risky stunts in the ravine – animating GI Joes and weird-looking clay figures – building and performing clunky puppets – drawing offbeat comics, - and imitating The Beatles. Today, life isn't very different. In addition to personal projects and various acting roles, Bill has been a director, writer, producer and core performer with The Muppets for nearly 30 years. Gene is an award-winning author and illustrator of children's books. He has also animated and illustrated for Sesame Street, Between the Lions, and The Jim Henson Company. The best part of their careers is that they occasionally get to work together! Unfortunately, no one will pay them to imitate The Beatles.   ABOUT OUR GUEST: Jay Fossgit Jay P. Fosgitt has created comics for many familiar properties, such as SESAME STREET and DREAMWORKS ANIMATION (Ape Entertainment), MY LITTLE PONY, G.I. JOE, MICRONAUTS, TRANSFORMERS (IDW/HASBRO), POPEYE (KING FEATURES), ADVENTURE TIME, THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL, JIM HENSON'S LABYRINTH, THE DARK CRYSTAL and FRAGGLE ROCK (Boom/The Jim Henson Company), BETTY AND VERONICA and LITTLE SABRINA (Archie), and ROCKET RACCOON AND GROOT, AVENGERS, GWENPOOL, WEB WARRIORS, CHAMPIONS, DEADPOOL, JESSICA JONES, NOT BRAND ECHH. LOCKJAW AND SPIDER-GEDDON (Marvel), and Jay has illustrated YOUNG DONALD books for Disney Publishing, and drawn for RANGER RICK MAGAZINE (National Wildlife Federation).

Steven Vincent, VP Music & Soundtracks at Disney Branded TV Today my guest on the Hometown to Hollywood podcast is Steven Vincent, Vice President of Music & Soundtracks at Disney Branded Television. He is the man behind the music you love from not only the Disney Plus and The Disney Channel, but also Disney XD, ABC Family, and more, since 2007. Steven Vincent advises and collaborates with TV series and TV movie producers on script development and creating original music, as well as licensed songs. He works with recording artists, songwriters and composers in conjunction with Disney Publishing, Disney Music Group and Radio Disney as well as external labels, publishers and management.   On the talent side, he has supervised the TV music careers of Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Jonas Bros, Zendaya, Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, Bridgit Mendler, Bella Thorne, Ross Lynch, Laura Marano, Zac Efron & Vanessa Hudgens.   Vincent has a degree in Music Composition from UCLA, and studied film scoring with Walter Scharf, David Raskin & Fred Karlin while winning scholarships from BMI and ASCAP. He has also worked as a film composer, arranger, producer, conductor and musician.   We discuss what he does in his work, what it’s like to work with young talent, how he creates the sound of the Disney shows and movies you love, advice for young talent (both songwriters and actor/singers) and much more. This is a fascinating dive into the world behind the music from so many of your favorite soundtracks— including The Cheetah Girls, Camp Rock, High School Musical, Disney Descendants, and much more. Join us!   Some of my favorite quotes from our conversation:   “Leave your ego at home. You’re there to serve not just your vision, but the vision of the director, producers, writers, and the studio.” “In some ways, my job is figuring out what each new show or musical should sound like.” “I meet songwriters all the time… there are always new creative voices coming.” “I remember the first thing we did with Bella and Zendaya… Bella was really nervous, and Zendaya would stand on the other side of the glass and cheer her on.” “It’s about setting people up for success. That’s a lot of my job. Trying to nurture people and inspire them & provide them with the tools they need to be as successful as possible.” “They’re very determined, driven people. They just happen to be kids at the time.” “If you want to become a good songwriter, write a lot of songs… try and write one great song a week.” “If you want to work in music, be a musician. Don’t just be a singer.” “If you want to be a songwriter, you want to express something that somebody else is going to care about.” “If you want to be a singer that matters, that’s successful… learn how to use your instrument. The voice is very much an instrument.” Find any opportunity to perform in front of people. All of it counts. All of it helps prepare you.” “I’m all about creative expression… I think it’s really important in being a complete person.”   Feeling inspired? Take Steve Vincent’s advice to heart and try writing a song this week! Or singing in front of an audience, even if it’s just your family in the living room. Or writing a poem or learning an instrument. As he says, you can learn a lot of this online, even from YouTube. If you are serious about a career as a singer, take voice lessons so you learn how to safely use your instrument. If you want to be a triple threat, learn some basic dance.   And if you need a little help navigating the industry, invest in an online consultation with me. A single session can set you up for success and help you avoid the painful pitfalls that can cost you precious time as well as money.

Welcome to Episode 43, Interview With Lesley Bush! Lesley describes herself as “the little red-haired girl smelling the roses while her daddy takes her picture, always looking for the positive and believing anything is possible,” including soulmates. She was fortunate to have as a teacher and huge influence Pulitzer-Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver, who said, “Do the most you can with your one wild and precious life.” So you might say she’s the adventurous type, growing up in Connecticut, going to college in Virginia, working for Disney Publishing in New York City, and heading west to Arizona where she met her future husband. After marriage, they moved to Denver, started a family, and finally settled where they are today in Fort Worth. Today she is a successful Rodan Fields rep. Leslie had a lot to navigate as a young girl. Between the ages of 8 and 12, her father underwent a quadruple bypass after a massive heart attack and her mom had breast cancer and a radical mastectomy. One sister suffered a brain hemorrhage while away at college, having to relearn how to walk and talk, and her other sister was anorexic. But these experiences taught her to take an objective, positive perspective when confronted with issues that otherwise can be emotionally draining.   Key Points From This Episode It’s easy to get so caught up in the day that we forget to take action. What will you do with your one wild and precious life? You can allow yourself the time you need to dwell on a challenge, but at some point you must take action. Don’t get so caught up in the day-to-day routine that life passes you by and you end up with regrets. Write down what you really want, not what you think you should want. Take the time to remember what you accomplished yesterday and what you will accomplish today. Delegate. People want to help. Determine your hourly worth based on how much you want to make annually.   Tweetables “I’m that same little red-haired girl who saw a lot of illness at a young age and has a fear of death, abandonment, and the unknown.” — Lesley [11:06.0] “My ‘why’ is to help others sigh. By that I mean to ‘breathe freely.'” — Lesley [13:38.0] “My mom [was] incredibly strong…. We’d stop on the way home [from the hospital] every day and have ice cream. So that might be why I sometimes emotionally eat!” — Lesley [18:40.0] “I want to die not having said, ‘I wish I had.’” – Lesley [19:25.0] “Audacious is being surprisingly bold, fearless and courageous, with a little bit of sass…” — Robin [20:20.0] “An audacious life is being authentic.” – Lesley [20:40.0] “I’m a huge believer in working with a coach.” – Lesley [32:25.0] “Eat the frog.” — @TheRobinWSmith [41:25.0]   Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode Roden+Fields Hustle Planner Acquity Audacious Life Website Robin on Instagram Robin on Twitter

Fangirls Going Rogue: Star Wars Conversation from a Female POV

What's happening on the latest episode of Fangirls Going Rogue? Rogue One news hit the internet like a Death Star laser beam. As the intergalactic dust settles, hosts Teresa Delgado, Sarah Woloski, and Tricia Barr ponder new characters and wonder how close Rogue One will get to A New Hope. Sarah Woloski gives a sneak peek into Skywalking Through Neverland's in-depth interview with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican, who broke the news. (Awesome recap of the news via Club Jade.) Fangirls Sophia and Chaney Hunt share their experience of joining the fandom during The Clone Wars era. As dear Yoda says, "Truly wonderful the mind of a child is." The young ladies give insight into what draws in the next generation of fan and remind us that Jar Jar and 'shipping are important to Star Wars. Teresa Delgado is back from the Rebel Force Radio meet-up at Disney World. Hear about her adventures. Tricia returns from a trip through Eastern Europe, where she found Ultimate Star Wars in Hungarian. Back in the United States, all the fangirls fell in love with ABC-3PO, a new reading book from Disney Publishing. Speaking of cute, the fangirls discuss The Freemaker Adventures, now showing on DisneyXD. Han Solo has come and gone from the galaxy far, far away. He focuses our character discussion. Don't forget, you can find Tricia Barr at the joint Fangirls Going Rogue/Star Wars Report podcast on the One Force stage at Celebration Europe, 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 16. Tricia will also be bringing news and insight from the convention all week. #30: Celebrating Real Women of Star Wars and the Fairy Tale of Kylo Ren

March is the month to celebrate women. The day after International Women’s Day actress Daisy Ridley had a powerful message for those critical of her. And that starts Episode 30 off with a bang! A lot of new Star Wars-themed additions are arriving to Disney Parks: Teresa Delgado is ready for the new fireworks, Sarah Woloski teases her Kylo Ren meet-and-greet on Episode 109 of Skywalking Through Neverland, and Tricia Barr thinks Jedi apprentice Anna really let it go on Darth Vader at the new Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple. For fans into expanding their Star Wars horizon, tons of new books and comics are out. The Poe Dameron comic will launch with events at local comic book stores. For the kids, Disney Publishing has a really cool Original Trilogy graphic novel and Rey’s Story, which we all enjoyed. Lots of other cool things are happening, including Bad Robot’s new diversity hiring initiative announced by J.J. Abrams, who will be speaking at SXSW. Teresa Delgado will be at the convention for his panel and the debut of Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey, which comes out with the movie Blu-Ray next month. The Fangirls discuss what movie extras we’re most excited about. It’s awards season. The Force Awakens might not have taken home an Oscar, but fans can help the movie to any number of MTV Movie Awards. Fangirls Going Rogue has also made it to the final round in several categories in the Star Wars Podcast Awards. Here’s a breakdown and how you can vote. The ladies ponder what fairy tales parallel The Force Awakens. How is Kylo Ren like Cruella DeVille? The answer segues beautifully into our character discussion, featuring Rey’s nemesis. Does redemption work for the son who murdered his father? The difference in opinion creates an interesting discussion on Star Wars storytelling.  Related Links Male Writer's Read The Terrible Internet Comments On Their Female Colleague's Articles Daisy Ridley Instagram Rian Johnson Birthday Wishes for Oscaar Isaac Social Media Fangirls Going Rogue: @FGGoingRogue Tricia: @fangirlcantina Teresa: @icecoldpenguin Sarah: @JediTink Sandra: @geekchic9 Facebook: Fangirls Going Rogue Instagram: @FGGoingRogue Tumblr: fangirlsgoingrogue.tumblr.com Instagram: @FGGoingRogue Voicemail: 331-21 Ewoks or 331-213-9657 (or hit that cool Voicemail button on the website) Email: contact@fangirlsgoingrogue.com (or use our Contact page) If you enjoyed the show, leave us a review on your favorite podcatcher and share the episode with friends.
