He is also the author of a new book, Building Great Leadership Teams: A Practical Approach for Unleashing the Full Potential of Your Team. We talk about the benefits of having a great leadership team, how to build trust inside a team, and why leadership is not about having all the answers.    --- Build a Great Leadership Team with Jack McGuiness Our guest is Jack McGuiness the founder of Relationship Impact co-founder of Relationship Impact a consulting firm focused on helping great leaders build great leadership teams. He is the author of a new book, Building Great Leadership Teams. Sounds very similar, which was recently released on Amazon. So, Jack, welcome to the show. Thank you so much for having me, I appreciate it. No, it's great to have you, and I'm very curious about this book and all the things that you're gonna share with our audience. So let's start with your journey. How did you become a leadership team coach? And what was the road that led you here? You told me about management consulting, your entrepreneurial venture. So, give us an overview of your journey, please. So as I'm sure with a lot of your guests, it wasn't a straight line, and it wasn't necessarily intentional, but it's kind of worked out for the better or the good, I think. So I'm a, I graduated in West Point. So I had an immediate experience being a leader, 22 years old of a bunch of infantry troops with the 10th Mountain Division, which was an amazing experience. Learned just a tremendous amount about myself. Some things I like, some things I didn't like so much. And, and learned from some, some non-commissioned officers that were just really top-notch leaders. And I learned how to be a good platoon leader. And there's a lot of lessons I've learned from that that have been foundational in my career, no matter whatever turns it took. As far as my entrepreneurial adventure, I got fortunate right out of business school. I went to business school right after I got out of the army and looking for a job, as we all did. And I got very lucky. It was a guy that was consulting to my brother at Verizon. He was a senior executive at Verizon and had worked with him for years. And he was a partner at Deloitte, started his own consulting firm. And I became one of his first employees and had the fortunate experience of doing two things, learning how to be a management consultant as an engineer with an MBA and some leadership experience as a platoon leader. But I learned the ins and outs of being a good management consultant as well at an early age from a guy that was a great mentor and a great consultant himself. But I also learned how to build a firm with him and some others from nothing. And that was a very cool experience too. We built a very cool management consulting firm that competed with the likes of Deloitte and McKinsey sometimes and others that we often lost to but we had our share of wins too. And so I learned how to build the infrastructure of a consulting firm, learned how to manage the financials of a professional service business, which was a challenging endeavor of the fits and starts of growing any firm. And so that experience at a early age, I think I was probably 26 or 27 when I got there and it was just, has been foundational for me, for sure. What about your next business?  I wound up becoming the chief operating officer at this consulting firm, which as a side note, sold to Accenture a few years ago. I missed out on all that, unfortunately. But I had an itch, sort of an itch to own my own thing and take the principles that I had learned in helping other businesses and build my own. So I, with a couple of passive investors, I bought a contract packaging firm that provided packaging services, mostly club store kind of services for big consumer product companies like Unilev...

You have likely been on some really good teams where everyone enjoyed working together and together, you accomplished some pretty exciting things. And…you had fun doing it. And on the rough days, you picked each other up and addressed the challenges together. Like me, you've probably also been on some teams where everyone seemed to be pulling in opposite directions, where no one seemed to want to be there, and where results were mediocre at best. It wasn't a good experience, so you're in no hurry to go back. You might even be on that kind of team now. Since both scenarios are common, how do we intentionally build great teams? What's the secret sauce that allows leaders to attract and retain great people, exceed performance goals, have everyone get along, and create a truly enjoyable experience for all involved? That's exactly what we're going to talk about in today's episode--but with a particular focus on leadership teams--where the stakes are often much higher. In fact, the future of an entire enterprise is often determined by how well a small group of people can work together to guide the organization.   Guest Bio: My guest today is Jack McGuinness. Jack is an executive coach, author, and co-founder of Relationship Impact, a consulting firm focused on helping organizations build great leadership teams. Jack is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and served with the Army's famed 10th Mountain Division. Jack's new book, _Building Great Leadership Teams: A Practical Approach for Unleashing the Full Potential of your Leadership Team,_ is the focus of our conversation.   What You'll Learn: What gets in the way of leadership teams being effective? What is your approach to helping build great leadership teams? Why are leadership teams so important? What is the leader's role in building a great leadership team? After serving in the military, he had a successful career in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology — and then changed careers and worked as a Junior High School Math Teacher and elementary school principal. While completing his doctorate in Executive Leadership, Gil founded Relationship Impact, a leadership development firm focused on Executive Team Development. In July of 2018, Gil began serving as the President of Nativity Prep Academy of San Diego, the county's only all-scholarship school focused on serving students from low-income situations who will be among the first generation in their family to graduate from college. Gil is also part of the leadership team at Core Strengths, a company that develops tools that help organizations build high-trust teams that deliver results through relationships. I invited Gil to the show because he knows a lot about helping leaders create a culture of curiosity — something so important in our current business world but also something that many leaders struggle to get right. “It takes two flints to make a fire.” – Louisa May Alcott Relationships are to leadership as bread is to a sandwich....it's what keeps it all together.  However, it today's busy world we tend to focus in on the relationship first and, instead, focus in on the mission. On this episode, I get to talk to fellow military leader and retiree, Jack McGuinness.  Jack is a West Point graduate and learned much of his leadership trade in the trenches (like I did) with other military people.  Jack and I talk about teamwork and leadership relationships this week and I know you're going to dig our conversation as much as I did.   CHEERS! More on Jack... Jack McGuinness has 25+ years of experience working with leadership teams at organizations big and small across multiple industries. After serving as an airborne ranger with the U.S. Army’s prestigious 10th Mountain Division, he helped build a successful boutique management-consulting rm where he served as COO for 13 years. Jack also served as CEO of a contract packaging company, where he developed a passion for unleashing the leadership capacity of teams throughout an organization. In 2009 Jack joined forces with a West Point classmate to form Relationship Impact, a consulting rm focused on working with CEOs to unlock the potential of their leadership teams. He also serves as a Senior Professional Instructor at the Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business where he teaches courses on strategic management and human capital. He is a contributing writer to Chief Executive Magazine. Jack holds an MBA from the Hagan School of Business at Iona College and a BS in Engineering Management from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Tips on team building to grow your business with Jack McGuinness Step back and ask, "What do we want this team to look like? How do we want it to operate?" The ability to listen and hear other people's perspectives, that's really, from our perspective, a pretty important skill in building and growing an organization If you just take some time for reflection in terms of getting to know each other it really can be the key that unlocks some potential that you didn't even know you had. There are some great psychometric instruments. All of them have their benefits. If they're used with the purpose of,  "how do we leverage our differences and capitalize on our similarities and commit to some specific behaviors that are important for this team at this time in its journey," then they can be really valuable. The first is what we call the structural foundation or the structural dynamics that are really critical for building an effective leadership team. And the second bucket piggybacks on the conversation we just had, is about similarities and differences at the individual level. Be prepared to hear feedback, be curious when you hear things that are different than your perspective, and curious when you receive feedback There's no perfect situation. In those situations where the leader is the problem, it's really hard. To be very frank, it's really hard to build a really great leadership team when the leader is the problem. Without addressing relational dynamics, the ability to trust and confront each other well and hold each other accountable, then you're sort of not attacking the right problem. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ TEAM BUILDING TIPS TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS [just click to tweet] TEAM BUILDING TIPS TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS Step back and ask, "What do we want this team to look like? Today we're going to take a slightly different approach, go in a different direction, but I think you'll see where we're going and why it's important to our organizations. My guest in the studio today is Jack McGuinness, and today we're going to talk about leadership. And you might be saying, "Hey, what does leadership have to do with sales and marketing?" And it has lots to do with sales and marketing, because how you effectively lead your teams, the feedback and the communications you get will have a direct result on how your marketing campaigns, your business grows, and how those tactics are actually executed in the marketplace. So in preparing for this episode, I had a little bit of a background on Jack. He's had 25 years' experience working with leadership teams, and he's worked with organizations both big and small in multiple industries. So after serving as an airborne ranger with the U.S. Army's prestigious 10th Mountain Division, he helped build a successful boutique management consulting firm where he served as the Chief Operating Officer for 13 years. Jack also has served as a CEO of a contract packaging company where he developed a passion for unleashing the leadership capacity of teams through an organization. Back in 2009, Jack joined forced with a West Point classmate to form Relationship Impact, a consulting firm focused working with CEOs to unlock the potential of their leadership teams. He also serves as a Senior Professional Instructor at John Hopkins Carey School of Business where he teaches courses on strategic management and human capital. He's a contributing writer to the Chief Executive Magazine, he also holds an MBA from the Hagan School of Business at Iona College, and a BS in Engineering Management from the United States Military Academy at West Point. So you can see that Jack is both well-decorated with his career in the military, and also with his leadership training and consulting work that he doe...
