Behind every wildlife crime is a legal battle - one that Justice for Wildlife Malaysia (JWM) is determined to strengthen. Recognising the critical role of the judiciary in conservation, JWM works to enhance prosecutorial processes, improve investigative methods, and educate legal professionals on the far-reaching impacts of wildlife crime. Originally a spin-off of the Justice for Silent Victims (J4SV) program by Panthera and Rimba, JWM has since grown into an independent force under the leadership of Dr. Nor Arlina Amirah Ahmad Ghani (Ann), working alongside conservation partners to ensure Malaysia's laws truly protect its wildlife. Ann joins us to share more.Image Credit: Justice for Wildlife Malaysia (JWM)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Rimba Ilmu Botanic Garden, the University of Malaya's 80-hectare botanical garden, is an important conservation site and educational resource in Malaysia. Since its inception in 1974, the garden has evolved from an abandoned rubber estate into a flourishing haven for around 1,700 plant species, offering a unique rainforest experience in an urban setting. Originally a teaching facility for biology students, it opened to the public in 1997 and now features core collections of medicinal plants, palms, and rare orchids. We discuss how Rimba Ilmu is fostering environmental awareness and promoting the conservation of Malaysia's rich biodiversity, and we also chat about Belukar Dah Jadi Rimba, Rimba Ilmu 50th anniversary exhibition with Benjamin Ong, a PhD researcher with the University of St Andrews and the producer of the exhibition, and also Huda Nejim Al-Asedi, a teaching artist, and the Art Director of Belukar dah jadi Rimba.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hello Listeners! The battle to save Taman Rimba Kiara is finally over, with the Federal Court's ruling in favour of protecting the space, by quashing a development order by the DBKL to develop the area. Many have described the long fight to preserve this green lung as a David vs Goliath undertaking - how did the community rally together to coordinate and take on the authorities? We speak to three of the many involved in the saga, Hafiz Abu Bakar (Former Chairman, TTDI Residents Association), Leon Koay (Committee Coordinator, Save Taman Rimba Kiara Working Group) and Khairudin Rahim (Media Coordinator, Save Taman Rimba Kiara Working Group) about the monumental effort that saved a park, and brought together a community for the greater good.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Just last month, the Federal Court delivered its decision on the Taman Rimba Kiara case, where the panel of judges unanimously decided that the development order obtained in 2017 by the joint venture of Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan and Developer Memang Perkasa Sdn Bhd for the Taman Rimba Kiara project was null and void. This decision is a landmark victory for all those who fought to preserve Taman Rimba Kiara, a much loved public space and green lung in the Klang Valley. We discuss the outcome of the legal case and how the landmark ruling will impact other public litigation cases in the country with two lawyers - Abraham Au, a Constitutional Lawyer with Messers G.S. Nijar, who appeared for the residents, and Kiu Jia Yaw, the Co-Deputy Chair of the Bar Council Environment & Climate Change Committee and the co-chair of the Malaysian CSO-SDG Alliance. On a broader scale, taking into account that Malaysia does not have an explicit recognition of environmental rights in our Constitution, we also discuss whether we should push for an amendment of our Federal Constitution to expressly recognise access to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, as a fundamental right.Image Credit: Facebook

Late last month, the Rimba Disclosure Project (RDP), released its findings for 2021, and found that Peninsular Malaysia will see deforestation amounting to a minimum of 72,584.73ha in the near future, which is nearly equal to the size of Singapore. They based their findings off a total of 86 environmental impact assessments (EIAs) involving forested land had been approved, 28 listings of forests for sale identified, and one project involving deforestation that was ongoing. The group points out that deforestation would not be possible without the support of the financial industry, and have called on all financial players to step up and recognise the connections between the biodiversity and climate crisis and urgently end all financial flows towards deforestation. They join us to discuss their findings and calls to action.Image credit: Shutterstock

Atas kontribusinya, Pak Dharsono sempat terpilih sebagai Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2018, World Economic Forum's 2020 Sustainability Pioneer dan juga Schwab Foundation's 2020 Social Entrepreneurs of the Year. Klik tautan di bawah ini untuk menyimak percakapan kami. Terima kasih lagi Pak Dharsono untuk sharing-nya!

Unlike many other mammals, bats are often greatly feared by people. There is even a condition for it - Chiroptophobia - or the fear of bats, which may largely stem from their association with darkness, vampires, horror films, or even their association as disease vectors and pests. This fear or dislike of bats is believed to be an important barrier to bat conservation globally. But a new study aims to shine the spotlight on more positive beliefs and cultural perceptions regarding bats from across the Asia-Pacific region, which can hopefully counter these negative narratives surrounding bats, and possibly also help design culturally-grounded conservation strategies for these tiny ecosystem warriors. We find out more about the study from two of the authors of the paper, Mary-Ruth Low, a Senior Conservation Scientist under Project Pteropus, RIMBA, and Dr Cyren Wong, an ethnozoologist and ecological anthropologist and lecturer at Monash University. Hannah Yeoh, Segambut MP, celebrates the Court of Appeal's quashing of a development order by KL City Hall to develop Taman Rimba Kiara in TTDI, but remains aware that the road ahead is a long one. Image Credit: tamanrimbakiara.net
What is the ethos of planning that our laws recognise and how far is actual governance from it? The judgement of the Court of Appeal that quashed a DBKL development order for a proposed high-rise project in the area highlighted issues of governance - conflicts of interests, duty to provide reasons for decisions, to adhere to plans - and in this instance, the KL Structure Plan. Melisa Idris and Sharaad Kuttan speak to Datuk Dr Gurdial Singh Nijah, lead counsel for the TTDI Residents about the significance of the judgement.
Earlier this week, the Court of Appeal quashed a Development Order by DBKL to develop Taman Rimba Kiara in Taman Tun Dr Ismail. TTDI residents had protested for more than 5 years against the proposed development, in which several blocks of high-end apartments had been approved by DBKL. Community action and legal activism led to this victory but is this the end of the journey? Melisa Idris and Sharaad Kuttan speak to Hannah Yeoh, MP of Segambut.

SUNDA EMPIRE TATANAN ATAS DUNIA!(?)
Flying foxes are giant fruit bats, and are one of the most threatened groups of bats in the world, with their numbers declining sharply due to hunting and habitat loss. They play a critical dual role in forest maintenance and regeneration as pollinators and seed dispersers, and are particularly important for pollinating durian trees. Rimba’s Project Pteropus has been working on flying fox conservation in collaboration with PERHILITAN since 2012, and this collaboration has resulted in a Conservation Roadmap which serves as a guidance document for flying fox conservation in Peninsular Malaysia. We find out more about this from Dr. Sheema Abdul Aziz, the Principal Investigator of Project Pteropus.

If you're lucky enough, you might spot an Oriental Pied hornbill flying around Taman Rimba Kiara in Taman Tun Dr Ismail. You can also catch sight of other species of birds like Brahminy Kites, Crested Goshawks, and this past week, you might have even seen flocks of Purple-backed Starlings. This small and threatened urban park is an ideal ground for bird watching, and is teeming with other wildlife, insects and plants. We find out more about what this small park has to offer, from Roselyn Chuah, an avid birdwatcher and Taman Rimba Kiara nature blogger, who has been documenting the flora and fauna found in the park since 2014.

You can also catch sight of other species of birds like Brahminy Kites, Crested Goshawks, and this past week, you might have even seen flocks of Purple-backed Starlings. This small and threatened urban park is an ideal ground for bird watching, and is teeming with other wildlife, insects and plants. Mama Hena selalu muncul dalam wujud kupu-kupu, burung penyayi, angin, atau dalam suara air hujan.

We often hear the phrase “protecting the environment for our future generation” and many other iterations of this with the same meaning. This week on Earth Matters, we explore two different projects aiming to get the younger generation more interested in environmental conservation efforts. First up, Abyan Junus-Nishizawa and Farah Landemaine are the founders of Anak Rimba Books, and the self-published authors of their first book “Why Don't I Look Like You." The story, which is about a little tapir called Timo, puts endangered Asian animals in the spotlight, and we find out more about their efforts to get young kids interested in the environment and endangered Asian animals. Chad and Amanda answer a question from a listener from Youtube. Then we realize how glad we are to be wrong about Alabama. Then we discuss a Tribe of people in Indonesia that were forced to change religions just to be able to survive. We also mention the 7 banned word for the CDC and a Joel Osteen lookalike. *** I mention putting this up a couple of days after recording it. I'm off on my dates of episode release when we recorded. You're not missing something, I'm just forgetting how much work I had already done ahead of time. http://www.nationalreview.com/article/454658/roy-moore-sodomy-video-bizarre-substitute-concession-speech http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-administration-banned-7-words-and-phrases-from-cdc-documents-2017-12 http://www.wcnc.com/news/weird/fake-joel-osteen-infiltrates-real-joel-osteen-event/491280316 http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-41981430 http://www.lcsun-news.com/story/opinion/columnists/2017/12/12/theres-war-secularism-not-christmas/946744001/ Twitter: @SecularPodcast @TSPChad Email: TheSecularPerspective@gmail.com Facebook: facebook.com/thesecularperspective Tumblr: http://thesecularperspective.tumblr.com/ Episode Index Website: TheSecularPerspective.com Patreon: www.patreon.com/thesecularperspective TeePublic: http://tee.pub/lic/dq5I2_9pamk Theme Music Provided By: http://www.jewelbeat.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPu9jawLiiCqWmnGNYC9ivA Tags: Secularism, Atheism, Agnosticism, Humanism, Anti-theism, Religion, Belief, Faith, God, Christianity, Roy Moore, Alabama, Doug Jones, Trump, CDC, Banned words, Joel Osteen, Mike Klimkowski, Indonesia, Orang Rimba, Palm Tree Oil, Islam, War on Christmas, Menorah, Hanukiah.

With over 1,300 species, bats illustrate many key issues in ecology and evolution, from the beauty of their unique biology to their importance for ecosystem services, disease and conservation. Now, scientists here have discovered that Southeast Asia’s highly popular durian tree is pollinated by locally endangered fruit bats known as flying foxes. By putting camera traps in durian trees on Tioman Island, Malaysia, researchers collected video evidence showing the island flying fox (Pteropus hypomelanus) pollinating durian flowers, leading to the production of healthy durian fruit. Dr. Sheema Abdul Aziz, the Co-Founder, President and Principal Investigator at Rimba, led the study in Malaysia as part of her PhD under the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (France). She joins us to share her findings.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Last November, Terengganu made headlines when it became the first state in Malaysia to issue a fatwa prohibiting the illegal hunting of wildlife. A five-minute film called ‘Harimau Selamanya’, was made to highlight the need to protect our environment in the context of Islam, with a special focus on the plight of the Malayan tiger. We discuss the film and wildcat conservation efforts with Dr. Reuben Clements, the co-founder of the non-profit research group Rimba, who is also and the lead researcher of Project Harimau Selamanya, and Harun Rahman, the producer and Director of the ‘Harimau Selamanya’ short film.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
