On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin is joined by author, folklorist, musician and songwriter Paul Weatherhead, whose book Weird Calderdale is a must-have for fans of Yorkshire folklore!Paul is a native of the Calder Valley in Yorkshire, and was brought up in Hebden Bridge. After finishing school and his BA, Paul spent several years teaching in Greece, Moscow and Northern Siberia before he returned to Calder Valley in the late 1990s. With a longstanding obsession with the weird history of the area he grew up, he wrote Weird Calderdale, the first edition of which was released in 2003 which went on to become a local best-seller.After earning his MA, Paul's writing then began to be published in various magazines and journals, including Psychology Today, The Skeptic, Northern Life and Psychedelic Scene. He frequently writes on topics including mass hysteria, delusions, weird history and folklore. And on the mass hysteria and delusions front, his latest book, released in September 2024, is called Social Panics and Phantom Attackers – A Study of Imaginary Assailants, which was co-written with renowned sociologist Robert Bartholomew: a mega-interesting topic which we discuss in some depth during this episode. As well as his research interests, Paul is a musician and songwriter, playing electric mandolin with cult folk rock band The Ukrainians for many years, as well as composing solo work consisting of comic folk horror songs inspired by 60s psychedelia, 80s video nasties and the Hebden Bridge Times. All of which makes Paul the ideal person to speak to about Yorkshire, and about folk music, too. To learn more about Paul and his work and books, and to read his excellent blog, do be sure to visit his website at paulweatherhead.com.Otherwise, settle in for a chat which engages with topics including local witches battling Cliff Richard, Yorkshire's zombies, the Halifax guillotine, local anti-hero Tom Bell, unidentified flying objects, and so much more! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Skeptical Inquirer, March 2023, by Rob Palmer:Iranian Schoolgirl Gas Attacks and Havana Syndrome: A Conversation with Robert BartholomewThe Non-Prophets, Episode 22.33.2 featuring Helen Greene, The Well-Known Skeptic, Aaron Jensen and"Jimmy Jr"Today we are discussing Havana syndrome and Iranian school girls' Mass poisoning reports. An article in the Skeptical Inquirer which is called Iranian School girl cast attacks and Havana Syndrome a conversation with Robert Bartholomew. What do these two situations have in common? One began in late 2016 when the US government claimed there were ongoing attacks against its Embassy Personnel in Cuba by unknown forces using unknown weapons. In subsequent years the scope of these claimed attacks include intelligence agents other government officials and even family members stationed in a very long list of countries. Eventually, it was even claimed to have happened on the White House grounds. The symptoms of these attacks were eventually called Havana syndrome. They included everything from brain fatigue to brain damage. The mysterious unidentified Weaponry speculated for these attacks included ultrasound, infrasound, pulsed electromagnetic energy microwaves, and many other things. The second involves Iranian girls. This started in November 2022. Reports surfaced about a poison gas attack at a girl's school in Iran affecting 200 students. Reports of gas attacks then happened all across the country of Iran.As of early this year, the count of victims stood at nearly 7,000 young girls. The victims are mostly girls, there were some teachers and extraneous victims, but mostly school girls. It has been reported at over 100 schools in nearly that many cities.Speculation ranged on who caused this. The usual suspects range from either the Iranian government seeking revenge for the recent and ongoing hijab protests, to the government saying it was a false flag operation by people who wanted it to look like it was the government doing it.Functionally the diplomats have this close-knit tie to one another. They perform the same job, they're going through the same things, and they're separated from their natural environment. On the other hand, the girls in these schools have a close-knit relationship in proximity. Unfortunately, throughout recent history you can go back decades and in different countries, very often if not exclusively in Muslim majority rule countries you will find similar events. and it's always schoolgirls. There's something about being in an environment as part of a population that has no control. When you feel that you can't control things, and you're under other people's thumbs this can happen. The people in Cuba were in hostile territory always under surveillance by the Cuban government. This reeks of mass hysteria, when you have a group of diplomats that are feeling something it's likely to encourage other diplomats to say well maybe that's what I'm feeling too. Maybe we actually are under attack. When in reality it's something else completely.

Abductions in the 1970s are characterized by cases that gained a level of popularity on their individual merits. The Pascagoula Abduction for instance was a media sensation that occurred during a very prominent UFO/humanoid flap. It's also the first year that a handful of abduction cases were reported. Interestingly, they all occurred within 10 days of each other. In 1974, The Carl Higdon abduction captured the attention of national headlines, and one year later, the Travis Walton case captured widespread press attention, primarily because it was a missing person's/murder case before it became an alien abduction. In 1975, 25 abduction cases were reported, setting a new record for the most reported in a year. Aside from the publicity of the Walton case, it's believed that the premiere of The UFO Incident, starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons, depicting the abduction of Betty Barney brought forth many experiencers, including Patty Roach, who experienced an abduction with her family in 1973. The abduction experiences of Brian Scott became known due to the film's release as well. Other abduction cases would come to the forefront in the 70s, such as the cases of Lee Parish, and the Stanford Three. All of these cases that I have mentioned we have covered on the podcast before, so it only makes sense to bring the most obscure cases to the table. Researcher Cole Herrold (New World Explorers Society) joins me discuss some of the strangest cases you've never heard before. In 1857, the Buchanan Administration sent an Army Expedition to Utah.  It was sure to be an arduous, difficulty journey, with many ways to suffer and few to win glory.  But who were the Soldiers marching against the Latter-day Saints?  On today's episode, we explore the Soldiers and Teamsters, which included both selfless heroes and hopeless drunks, public servants and fugitive criminals, that made up Johnston's Army.  Discussions include:  A letter from Robert E. Lee warning Albert Sidney Johnston not to take his wife to Utah, as the many wives of Brigham Young would look upon her as a "poor, imposed on sinner."The medical journal of Dr. Robert Bartholomew, Regimental Surgeon to the 10th Infantry Division.  He noted two classes of Soldiers - those who grew stronger through exercise and moderate living, and "worthless recruits" whose only abstained from whiskey when they could procure it.  The lone, dogged Marine, LT Robert Browning, who joined the Army expedition as an observer.  Three years later, the dashing young Marine would be lost in the Pacific Ocean, having gone down with his ship, USS Levant.  The "Thieves, Thugs, and Worthless Characters" that made up the Teamsters and Contractors joining the expedition.  The memoirs of Private Robert Morris Peck, including a description of how the card sharks and sharpers among the Teamsters would have nearly all the Soldiers' money within a few days of pay day, and a colorful description of Charlie Hart, one of the most reckless gamblers to join the expedition.  The desertion of Private Charles Wilcken, his defection to the Latter-day Saints, and his long and fruitful life as a baptized member of the Church.  Wilcken would have three descendants run for the U.S. Presidency - George Romney, Mitt Romney, and Jon Huntsman, Jr.   To learn more about the start of the Utah War, please check out these (excellent!) sources:  William MacKinnon, At Sword's Point: A Documentary History of the Utah War (Vol. I and II) (2016).  MacKinnon's work on the Utah War is nothing short of phenomenal.  They are available on Google Books to anyone interested.   Also, I drew on the Forward to Volume I written by Will Bagley.

Ascribing diseases to the evil-doing of enemies is an old human habit that can be traced in a wide range of historical injustices, from the witchcraft trials to the Holocaust. One would think that in this age of science and rationality, we would have moved beyond casting unproven recriminations, at least at state level, but apparently not. Take the so-called Havana Syndrome, a mysterious condition said to be afflicting American diplomatic and military personnel abroad – it's barely diagnosed but widely assumed to be an act of aggression. What is that symptomatic of? To discuss this, Oksana is joined by Robert Bartholomew, honorary senior lecturer in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Auckland and author of ‘Havana Syndrome: Mass Psychogenic Illness and the Real Story Behind the Embassy Mystery and Mass Hysteria'.

‘Brain-fog', dizziness, ringing in the ears, fatigue: everyday symptoms of attacks by a possibly extraordinary weapon. In 2016, a number of CIA agents began to report these symptoms, alongside a possible cause of an unusual sound. Now over 200 Americans and Canadians have reported symptoms, and Kamala Harris, America's vice president, this August delayed a flight to Vietnam because of suspected cases in Hanoi. But what causes Havana Syndrome? Is it the result of attacks by microwave weapons, or is it something more banal? Robert Bartholomew is on the podcast today to talk to James about reports of Havana Syndrome, and the veracity of the microwave weapon and Frey effect theories. Robert discusses the results of experimentation over the years, and the support for a theory of Mass Psychogenic Illness. Alongside Robert Baloh, Robert Bartholomew is a co-author of ‘Havana Syndrome: Mass Psychogenic Illness and the Real Story Behind the Embassy Mystery and Hysteria'. On this edition of Parallax Views, the "Havana Syndrome" has been in the news since U.S. diplomats in Cuba described experiencing a strange sickness involving ringing inside the ear among other symptoms. Since the initial reports of the "Havana Syndrome" were reported the idea that it is the result of exotic weaponry, either a sonic weapon or microve-based directed energy weapon, being used by Cuba (potentially with the help of Russia or China, some believe) against U.S. officials. Now reports of the so-called "Havana Syndrome" have spread to the United States, including D.C.  Mainstream U.S. news media has picked up on the story and now the United States government is conducting an investigation into these alleged attacks. Medical sociologist Dr. Robert Bartholomew, however, believes that this is all a mistake and that the alleged "Havana Syndrome" can better be explained by a stress-induced psychological illness rather than sonic weapons or microwave weapons. In his book Havana Syndrome: Mass Psychogenic Illness and the Real Story Behind the Embassy Mysery and Hysteria, co-authored with neurologist Dr. Robert Baloh, Dr. Batholomew makes the case that the "Havana Syndrome" is actually a case of mass psychogenic illness that has spread via rumor and innuedo. While the victims may experience very real symptoms, he says, the actual syndrome is unlikely to have been caused by sonic or directed energy weapons. Dr. Bartholomew joins us on this edition of the program to discuss his research into mass psychogenic illness, why he beleives the Havana syndrome is better explained by this phenomena, similar cases such as the Mad Gasser of Mattoon, blunders made by jounralists and the media as well as the government in dealing with the "Havana Syndrome" story, conspiracy theories, how the "Havana Syndrome" is taking valuable resources and time away from combating problems like global warming, why he believes Cuba would not attack U.S. diplomats with exotic weaponry, and much, much more.

Tonight Jordan Cline welcomes Robert BartholomewRobert is the author of "The Untold Story of Champ: A Social History of America's Loch Ness Monster"This book presents the Champlain Monster like you have never seen him before. This warts and all biography of America's Loch Ness Monster by sociologist Robert Bartholomew breaks new ground by taking journalists to task for sloppy reporting, and criticizing local tourist bureaus for their singular focus on Champ Dollars. It presents the most complete history of Champ from Native American lore to the modern-day monster hunters; their egos, obsessions and behind-the-scenes squabbles. Also examined is whether the famous Mansi photo is a hoax, and weighs the evidence of the ultimate question: does Champ exist?
