Across Europe, from the dawn of print until the early twentieth century, the news of crime and criminals' public executions was printed in song form on cheap broadsides and pamphlets to be sold in streets and marketplaces by ballad-singers. Singing the News of Death: Execution Ballads in Europe 1500-1900 (Oxford UP, 2022) looks at how and why song was employed across Europe for centuries as a vehicle for broadcasting news about crime and executions, exploring how this performative medium could frame and mediate the message of punishment and repentance. Examining ballads in English, French, Dutch, German, and Italian across four centuries, author Una McIlvenna offers the first multilingual and longue durée study of the complex and fascinating phenomenon of popular songs about brutal public death. Ballads were frequently written in the first-person voice, and often purported to be the last words, confession or 'dying speech' of the condemned criminal, yet were ironically on sale the day of the execution itself. Musical notation was generally not required as ballads were set to well-known tunes. Execution ballads were therefore a medium accessible to all, regardless of literacy, social class, age, gender or location. A genre that retained extraordinary continuities in form and content across time, space, and language, the execution ballad grew in popularity in the nineteenth century, and only began to fade as executions themselves were removed from the public eye. With an accompanying database of recordings, Singing the News of Death brings these centuries-old songs of death back to life. Una McIlvenna is Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Australian National University. Haunting Songs of the Condemned: Singing The News of Executions with Una McIlvenna

Haunted History Chronicles

Step into the streets of Europe from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, where news of criminals' deeds and their ultimate fate was delivered through compelling songs. These execution ballads, often sold on bustling streets and marketplaces, turned crime and punishment into melodic tales; haunting melodies that once carried tales of compassion, violence, and humanity itself. Our guest, Una McIlvenna takes us through her research on this intriguing tradition. Songs featured in the podcast with guest permission, and obtained from the website (links below.) My Special Guest is Una McIlvena   Una McIlvenna is Honorary Senior Lecturer in English at the Australian National University, and has held positions at the Universities of Melbourne, Sydney, Kent and Queen Mary University of London. A literary and cultural historian, she researches the early modern and nineteenth-century pan-European tradition of singing the news, and the history of crime and punishment, looking at songs in English, French, German, Dutch and Italian. Her monograph Singing the News of Death: Execution Ballads in Europe 1500-1900 (OUP, 2022) explores the phenomenon of the execution ballad, songs that spread the news of condemned criminals and their often ghastly ends. This is accompanied by her website ExecutionBallads.com which features recordings of some of these songs. She has published articles on news-singing in Past & Present, Renaissance Studies, Media History, Parergon, and Huntington Library Quarterly, and is a co-founder of the international Song Studies Network. Contrafactum Execution ballads intertwine music, emotion, and history, using 'contrafactum' or 'parody' to re-purpose well-known melodies. Identified with phrases like 'to the tune of...,' these melodies acquired intricate emotional associations. 'Fortune My Foe,' a somber melody, resonated across early modern northern Europe, accompanying songs of death and disaster. Surprising contrasts emerged as lively tunes like 'Row Well Ye Mariners' satirically celebrated John Felton's execution in 1570. Italian ballads deviated, employing metrical forms like ottava rima and terza rima. Notably, terza rima expressed nobles' remorse in the first-person voice during executions. This fusion of melody and verse crafted poignant narratives, embodying compassion, satire, and reflection through time. The Business Of Singing The News Printers meticulously inked the tales onto single-sheet broadsides and pamphlets, ready to be sold by the street singers who transformed words into melody. These itinerant vendors often bought songsheets wholesale, their lives hand-to-mouth as they navigated various trades. As they sang the contents of the ballads, they not only promoted their wares but also propagated stories that would resonate through the ages. Thus, execution ballads merged commerce and culture, leaving an indelible mark on the historical fabric. In this episode, you will be able to:  1. Uncover the significance of singing the news. 2. Explore aspects of crime and punishment. 3. Examine commonalities and differences between ballads. 4. Examine messages, themes and elements- including elements of the supernatural. In this episode, I speak with Martin Liebscher from the Philemon Foundation. Martin is a Research Fellow in the German Department and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Centre for the History of Psychological Disciplines at University College London. We discuss the recently published book by Philemon, "Jung on Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises," which includes lectures that Jung delivered at ETH in Zurich between June 1939 and November 1940.Martin begins by contextualizing these lectures in Jung's life and theory-building and gives an overview of Jung's activities in the 1930s. We discuss why Jung turned towards Western and European spirituality during this time and then dive into the vision of Saint Loyola, along with Jung's interpretation of it. We also discuss the work of Jesuit priest, philosopher, and theologian Erich Przywara, whose writings on the exercises served as a foundation for much of Jung's lectures.Additionally, we delve into two of the most important visions of Jung: the first being from Christmas Day of 1913, where Jung identified with being Christ on the Cross, and the second is a vision of Christ on the Cross that he had while writing on the spiritual exercises of Saint Loyola in the late 1930s.The music played in this episode is licensed under creativecommons.org: Ketsa - Golden Teacher.

SarcoSIGHT- A Randomised Controlled Trial of Fluorescence Guided Sarcoma Surgery versus Standard Care

Surgery along with chemotherapy is the mainstay of treatment for patients with osteosarcoma. In order to achieve a cure, during surgery healthy tissue surrounding the tumour is also removed. Whilst this reduces the chances of the cancer returning, it can also result in added pain and disability for patients, impacting their quality of life in the longer-term. Advancements in surgical technology and technique offer the hope of improved outcomes for patients. Recent developments have led to the introduction of fluorescence guided surgery (FGS), a technique which harnesses the emission of light to identify a tumour's precise location and boundaries during surgical removal. This improves a surgeon's ability to successfully remove the entire tumour, which can be identified as a ‘glowing' area of tissue, decreasing the likelihood of any cancer cells remaining, while limiting the removal of too much healthy tissue. This upcoming clinical trial, led by Kenneth Rankin, a leading Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and bone sarcoma researcher, is looking to assess the effectiveness of a particular fluorescent dye, indocyanine green or ‘ICG', which can be given to patients safely before surgery and leads to the sarcoma tumour fluorescing green. The SarcoSIGHT trial will recruit 500 patients undergoing surgery for bone and soft tissue sarcoma, aiming to test whether the use of ICG in FGS can help to accurately identify the tumour, aid in complete removal and reduce the amount of healthy tissue removed. This presentation will include the findings to date from fluorescence guided surgery in osteosarcoma patients with some initial results indicating that the amount of fluorescence may predict response to chemotherapy and that the osteosarcoma tissue can be studied in detail post-operatively with the latest fluorescence microscopy techniques. --- Mr Kenneth Rankin is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital where his specialist interests are in orthopaedic oncology including fluorescence guided surgery for sarcoma resection, and hip and knee replacement for arthritis. Mr Rankin graduated in 1999 from the University of Dundee. His basic surgical training was in Newcastle followed by an MD investigating the cellular biology of bone metastases. Mr Rankin completed his higher specialist training in Perth and Dundee followed by a return to the North East as NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer. His current post as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer is comprised mainly of orthopaedic oncology including the surgical management of bone and soft tissue sarcomas and metastatic bone disease. He also carries out hip and knee replacements for arthritis. As a Clinical Scientist Mr Rankin has developed an international reputation for translational research for the detection of circulating tumour cells in sarcoma patients and carried out the world's first case series of fluorescence guided surgery in sarcoma. Working in close collaboration with scientists at Newcastle University, he leads on basic and translational sarcoma research at the Newcastle Centre for Cancer.

In this episode we have the challenging job of getting our head around the psychology of altered states of consciousness or ‘exceptional human experiences' as today's specialist calls them. Are they mere illusions of the mind? Does their ability to radically change our world view and sense of meaning in the world give them a special status in psychology and mental health? And how do we talk scientifically about significant similarities between such experiences across different times and cultures that appear to imply the existence of an alternative kind of ‘reality' what ever ‘reality' is. Fortunately, to navigate this bag of worms, we have a researcher who has devoted his career to the study of these experiences both psychedelic and other, Dr. David Luke. David Luke is currently a module leader of the Psychology of Exceptional Human Experience in Greenwich Universities Psychology and Counselling Department, a course he has been running since 2009. He is also currently an Honorary Senior Lecturer for the Centre for Psychedelic Research, Division of Brain Sciences, Imperial College London. He was President of the Parapsychological Association between 2009 and 2011, and received the Faculty's first Inspirational Teaching Award (2016) from the University of Greenwich. He is a prolific author and editor of books, and today we'll be discussing his 2017 book ‘Otherworlds: Psychedelics and exceptional human experiences' and his new book, a collections of essays he has edited called ‘DMT Entity Encounters: Dialogues on the Spirit Molecule' He is also the co-founder of the Breaking Convention Conference on Psychedelics.
