The Washington Roundtable: The midsummer Presidential campaign is full of surprises, including a deluge of upcoming legal battles for the G.O.P. front-runner, former President Donald Trump. Recent federal disclosures have painted a preliminary picture of the race to raise money taking place between Republican primary contenders. The campaign of Florida's governor, Ron DeSantis, who was initially viewed as a powerful competitor to Donald Trump in the Republican primary, has spent much of its cash and been forced to lay off staff. Meanwhile, the centrist group No Labels hosted an event in New Hampshire this week co-headlined by Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a Democrat, and former Utah Governor and Republican Presidential candidate Jon Huntsman, raising concerns among Democrats of a possible third-party “unity ticket” shaking up the race. Plus, Trump may face his third indictment—this time, for his role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election. In a separate case against Trump, regarding classified documents, a federal judge in Florida has set the trial date for next May, shortly before the Republican nominee for President will be named in Milwaukee. Hosted by the New Yorker staff writers Susan B. Glasser, Jane Mayer, and Evan Osnos.

Looking at possible outcomes of third-party presidential candidates

The 2024 general election polls are split, with President Biden leading former President Trump narrowly in most, but Trump ahead in some. The surveys suggest another close race next year, assuming those two are in fact the nominees. But could a third party spoiler help throw the race to Trump and hand him a second term instead of Biden? Professor Cornel West is running for the Green Party nomination and could siphon off some progressives. The new “No Labels” party says it will field a moderate, centrist unity ticket, perhaps led by Joe Manchin, Larry Hogan or Jon Huntsman. Anti-vaccine gadfly Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is challenging President Biden for the Democratic nomination but could end up running as an independent. How would the presence of as many as three high-profile third party candidates change the dynamics of the 2024 campaign? Could one of them do what Ralph Nader did in 2000, and Jill Stein in 2016, and help a Republican win the Electoral College while losing the popular vote?  For more on this, KCBS' political reporter Doug Sovern, along with anchors Bret Burkhart and Patti Reising, spoke with Garry South, the veteran California political strategist. Among other campaigns over the years, he was a key advisor to Al Gore's presidential campaign in 2000.

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin defended his flirtation with a third-party presidential campaign saying he had no plans to play “spoiler” in the 2024 election. Manchin spoke at a No Labels forum in New Hampshire with former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, a Republican, who told reporters after that any talk of a Manchin-Huntsman ticket was premature and a distraction. Cornel West is running for President as a Green Party candidate. He tells Anderson Cooper if he's concerned about a third-party candidate siphoning votes away and potentially leading to another four years of former President Trump in the White House. Also, on Monday, the centrist group No Labels is hosting a town hall in New Hampshire featuring Sen. Joe Manchin and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman. The group has said that they plan to run a moderate ticket in 2024 featuring one Republican and one Democrat (although not necessarily the two featured in Monday's town hall). Early polling suggests that such a ticket would pull more support from President Biden than former President Donald Trump in a potential rematch. Leah and Derek bring on former Democratic Utah nominee for US Senate Scott Howell to discuss Biden's path to keeping the White House and whether there are some legitimate challengers waiting in the wings.    The Banned American List Russia has released a 500-person list of people banned from setting foot on Russian soil. On the list are former Utah governor Jon Huntsman, Jr…. and Late Night personality Stephen Colbert? Hosts Leah Murray and Derek Brown unpack whether this list means much and why President Putin's regime feels the need to create it.    The Surgeon General's Social Media Guidelines  Social media restrictions are going viral at every level of government, with Utah's governor threatening lawsuits against tech companies and Montana banning TikTok altogether. The nation's Surgeon General is the latest to get involved. Dr. Kristin Francis, child psychiatrist from the Huntsman Mental Health Institute, joins the show to unpack the Surgeon General's new guidelines for how teens and parents can navigate social media.    A New Hope for Immigration Policy  For over 30 years, immigration bills have died on Capitol Hill. A new bipartisan effort from two Hispanic lawmakers could be the bill that breaks the trend. The proposal would give legal status to many immigrants while focusing security screenings on those who might pose a threat or national security concerns. NewsNation Washington Correspondent Joe Kahlil joins the show to explain whether the bill has legs.     Preparing for Upcoming Road Trips  Road trip season is upon us, and more than 40 million Americans will be driving and flying this Memorial Day Weekend. That can lead to traffic jams and long delays. AAA spokesman Julian Paredes joins hosts Leah Murray and Derek Brown to give a glimpse at what travelers can expect this holiday.    The 2024 Senate Race Begins Senator Mitt Romney has been a fixture for the senate seat for Utah since 2019. Early voting is underway in Michigan. In the race for Governor, Tudor Dixon is finally campaigning, focusing on social wedge issues, but her campaign continues to lack money. She may get some help when the nation's #1 election denier, Donald Trump, brings his Big Lie Tour to Michigan this weekend to talk about himself and maybe help Tudor and the rest of the Republican statewide ticket. The polls are saying that, as of now, it could be a Democratic landslide at the top of the ticket in Michigan. With voting underway, these polling numbers are much more significant than before. The most recent come to us via EPIC/MRA. The company's CEO, Bernie Porn, talks with Mark and Jeff about his latest measure of the electorate.. Then we're joined by former GOP political consultant Tim Miller. He is best known for his role as communications director for the Jeb Bush 2016 presidential campaign and for being an outspoken Republican critic of former U.S. president Donald Trump. Miller was an Iowa staffer for John McCain in the 2008 Republican Party presidential primaries, and later served as national press secretary for the Jon Huntsman 2012 presidential campaign. During the Bush campaign, Miller drew notice as a "vocal critic" of Donald Trump. In 2020, Miller co-founded the advocacy organization Republican Voters Against Trump, which sponsored television and internet advertisements featuring lifelong Republicans explaining their decision to vote for former vice president Joe Biden instead of Trump, and served as its political director. He is now a contributing writer for The Bulwark and ROlling Stone, and a frequent guest commentator on MSNBC and CNN. Miller recently published the best-selling book Why We Did It: A Travelogue from the Republican Road to Hell. ________________________________________________ This week's podcast is underwritten by Practical Political Consulting and EPIC-MRA. In 1857, the Buchanan Administration sent an Army Expedition to Utah.  It was sure to be an arduous, difficulty journey, with many ways to suffer and few to win glory.  But who were the Soldiers marching against the Latter-day Saints?  On today's episode, we explore the Soldiers and Teamsters, which included both selfless heroes and hopeless drunks, public servants and fugitive criminals, that made up Johnston's Army.  Discussions include:  A letter from Robert E. Lee warning Albert Sidney Johnston not to take his wife to Utah, as the many wives of Brigham Young would look upon her as a "poor, imposed on sinner."The medical journal of Dr. Robert Bartholomew, Regimental Surgeon to the 10th Infantry Division.  He noted two classes of Soldiers - those who grew stronger through exercise and moderate living, and "worthless recruits" whose only abstained from whiskey when they could procure it.  The lone, dogged Marine, LT Robert Browning, who joined the Army expedition as an observer.  Three years later, the dashing young Marine would be lost in the Pacific Ocean, having gone down with his ship, USS Levant.  The "Thieves, Thugs, and Worthless Characters" that made up the Teamsters and Contractors joining the expedition.  The memoirs of Private Robert Morris Peck, including a description of how the card sharks and sharpers among the Teamsters would have nearly all the Soldiers' money within a few days of pay day, and a colorful description of Charlie Hart, one of the most reckless gamblers to join the expedition.  The desertion of Private Charles Wilcken, his defection to the Latter-day Saints, and his long and fruitful life as a baptized member of the Church.  Wilcken would have three descendants run for the U.S. Presidency - George Romney, Mitt Romney, and Jon Huntsman, Jr.   To learn more about the start of the Utah War, please check out these (excellent!) sources:  William MacKinnon, At Sword's Point: A Documentary History of the Utah War (Vol. I and II) (2016).  MacKinnon's work on the Utah War is nothing short of phenomenal.  They are available on Google Books to anyone interested.   Also, I drew on the Forward to Volume I written by Will Bagley.

Devry Boughner Vorwerk, Chair of the COFTA selection committee presented the award. In her remarks, she focused not only on the incredible list of accomplishments but on Jon Huntsman's work for people of all nations. He truly is a champion. Following Huntsman's remarks, Erik Paulsen moderated a discussion that included trade and focused on recent events in Russia, specifically whether Putin has an ‘off ramp' and how will the Russian invasion of Ukraine affect global trade and global security. He was clear in his message that no other nation in the world can do what the United States of America can do. It's imperative we work together. A united America is one weapon dictators fear most.
