Pro AV Today

The Pro AV industry continues to intersect with sectors like healthcare, retail, and corporate environments, making access to hands-on product demos and direct vendor conversations more important than ever. Technologies are evolving rapidly, and end users are demanding increasingly complex solutions. According to AVIXA, the global Pro AV market is projected to reach $402 billion by 2028. This is a signal of both the sector's growth and the increasing need for deep product knowledge and technical expertise. Events like the E4 Experience have become vital hubs for education, innovation, and connection. In a fast-moving industry where product cycles are short and end-user needs are constantly changing, how do regional events like E4 help manufacturers, integrators, and end users stay in sync?Ben Thomas, the host of Pro AV Today, speaks with Vishal Chhatralia, the Global Chief Digital & Marketing Officer at DCC Technology, and Dan Smith, the EVP/COO at Exertis Almo. The discussion explores how E4 events serve as more than just trade show stops. These shows are strategic platforms for channel enablement, customer education, and industry transformation.Key Takeaways from the Conversation:Access to Innovation: E4 offers a rare opportunity for hands-on experience with the latest AV technologies, especially for regional partners and customers who can't attend global shows like InfoComm.Education That Drives the Channel: CTS-certified sessions and real-time product demos empower both newcomers and seasoned professionals to keep up with the AV industry's fast pace.A More Inclusive, Specialized Workforce: Solutions have become more complex, increasing the need for specialized roles, inclusive hiring practices, and robust integrator support to sustain innovation across the channel.Vishal Chhatralia is a senior digital and ecommerce executive with over 15 years of leadership experience driving digital transformation, online sales growth, and innovation strategies in global B2B environments. He currently serves as Chief Digital and Innovation Officer at DCC Technology and Exertis, where he leads global digital, marketing, and product teams. Previously, at RS Components, he held multiple senior roles, including Global SVP of Digital and Innovation, where he delivered record-breaking digital sales growth, scaled agile practices, and earned multiple industry awards for customer experience and marketing excellence.Dan Smith is Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Exertis Almo, where he leads strategic growth and operations for North America's largest value-added professional AV distributor. He previously held senior leadership roles at LG Electronics, where he managed and led national sales and engineering teams across IT, display, and commercial technology sectors. Earlier in his career, he drove market expansion and high-growth initiatives at companies including Samsung, Magenta Research, and Tech Data through product development, channel strategy, and customer-focused execution.

Chris and Elecia bounce from topic to topic, discussing life and work and occasionally answering listener emails. Python can format code into equations in Latex with Latexify (as noted in this tweet)  Interesting sensor: Sensing deep-tissue physiology via wearable ultrasonic phased arrays   Turing Complete - a listener-recommended logic gate puzzle game for Steam. In the past, we've also talked about Zachtronics' TIS-100 which is similar and Shenzhen IO which is at the circuit level. Oh, and there is The Human Resource Machine by Tomorrow Corporation. A listener recommended the Agile Embedded Podcast, particularly the episode on technical debt. News that Rollercoasters are triggering iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Crash Detection led to a mentions of a blog post about debugging Fitbit's issues with rollercoasters and accelerometers. Visual Studio Code for embedded systems development: You can use CubeMX and Platform.io (here is a how-to) Try out this stm32-for-vscode extension that claims to do what you want (we haven't tried it, tell us if it works)  Or you can go more directly with the cortex-debug extension and locally installed ARM GCC package. Don't forget the VSCode Code Spell Checker extension. From the notes for Elecia's class: Where to buy small quantity prototyping components Having looked for an OLED display part in Live Class, I wanted to put together a list of where you might want to look for components, especially for the prototype stage.  Adafruit and Sparkfun (and EMSL and a lot of other maker stores). If you are using their code as template or test code, look for their boards to see if you can use them. Worldwide and large components distributors with local distribution: Digikey is worldwide and they resell Adafruit and Sparkfun so if you don't want to start with an “OLED” search on Digikey and sort through the results, well, you can start with easier prototype parts. Farnell is a UK company though they have other names in other locations (Newark in the US and Element14 in Asia and Oceania). If they have your flag, you can probably get cheap shipping. Farnell is usually good for all of Europe. RS Components is also new to me though they seem to stock Adafruit parts as well as general electronics. They have lots of distributors all over the world (including more in Africa than I usually see). AliExpress is huge and worldwide, shipping from Asia. It is hard to find things but searching “Adafruit [part]” or “Sparkfun [part]” and you might find what you want… or a cheaper knockoff. Usually you want results in the Electronic Components and Supplies. Note: if it seems too good to be true it probably is. UK has Pimoroni and Cool Components and OkDo resell Adafruit and Sparkfun as well as other pieces like BBC micro:bit and Raspberry Pi. These may work for European countries. Seeed Studio has a wide variety of parts, the Grove and Components categories have parts that might be interesting. They deliver quickly and cheaply to Oceania and Asia.  DFRobot is new to me but looks great. It was recommended for folks in Asia and Oceania. Their parts are resold through Digikey, Arrow, Farnell (Newark).   Australia: Little Bird Electronics, Core Electronics, and Altronics   Transcript Thank you to our sponsor this week!

On this episode of Build Better Brands, Danielle Clarke is joined by Mark Shayler, the owner of Ape, a sustainable innovation studio that works with companies of all sizes to reduce the environmental impact of their products, packaging, processes and business models. Mark is also a renowned public speaker and has published two books, one on presenting (Do Present) and one on disruptive thinking (Do Disrupt). KEY TAKEAWAYSWhen you can change someone's mind about sustainability, you can normally change their mind about other things. I'm usually invited into businesses as “the sustainability guy” in a bigger innovation process. I'd sit and watch the whole process and thought “I can do this' ', I'm getting paid ‘x' and they're being paid ‘10x', so I began working in innovation too.As individuals we move through life like a sponge, soaking up the things that happen to us, more importantly everything that happens to other people, and they become debilitating, like a fear of flying or that your voice has nothing to say – even if it was originally told to you from a point of care. When we look at brand and the way a business functions – purpose – if we have really tight or constrained beliefs about what we can and can't do, it's like a plant in to small a pot and our roots can't spread, then our crown can't grow higher and wider, meaning it doesn't photosynthesise properly so the roots aren't fed. You become small on purpose, for all the right reasons, but you're not supposed to be small, you're supposed to be you-sized.Organisations usually start off brave, hungry and foolish and they make amazing mistakes and do great work, then they have too much to lose and they get worried about the way they're seen by the world and about stepping outside of their land so their lane gets narrower. Before you know it a business can have the same constraining beliefs and reticence to play and think big as individuals do.When I work with companies on their purpose and “why”, I like to keep the “why” as hippy-ish and broad as I can. If your “why” is broad – like Apples: to challenge the status quo – you could make a car instead of a laptop, or food, or a service. If a company works out its purpose on its beliefs other than its functions (which are “how” and “what”), then you'll never stray from it. BEST MOMENTS‘We can build bad brand better or we can build better brands, that's an important differentiation that sometimes we forget when we're talking about branding.'‘It's not good enough to be the best of the best, you need to be the only one doing what you do.'‘In your first 11 years you're pretty free, then you or your parents and teachers point out your eccentricities and we take our rough edges off. The thing that made you weird as a kid is what makes you unique today.'‘I use music in my presentations to explain what you're listening to now is normally a reaction to what came before. It can be a build, but it's usually a revolution. As a band changes its first group of fans doesn't want them to, but the band has to, otherwise they're remaking album one.' ABOUT THE GUESTMark Shayler helps big companies think small and small companies think big. Making stuff better and making better stuff. He is an innovation and environmental advisor who works with clients including Nike, Samsung, John Lewis, Tesco, RS Components, Coca Cola, Fenwick, Kier, Tesco Bank, Amazon and some of the greatest small companies in the world. Her focus has always been human-centric, making people matter in her decisions and interactions with those around her. Her key approaches are to lead with low ego, ensuring that we don't think we are the most important person in the room and engaging those around as a team to achieve the same purpose. Also lead with empathy, understand others, know what is driving them - focus on curiosity rather than judgement.
