1.The Reserve Bank of India's interest rate decision, Today,(October 1) will likely be a close call, with policymakers facing multiple reasons to lower borrowing costs as inflation stays low and economic growth takes a knock from high US tariffs. While a majority of economists — 24 of 39 surveyed by Bloomberg — predict the repurchase rate will remain on hold at 5.5%, 15 expect a quarter-point reduction, citing India's growth prospects. Even many of those forecasting a hold say there's justification to ease. The six-member monetary policy committee, led by Governor Sanjay Malhotra, will need to juggle a number of competing objectives this week. Inflation, which is hovering near the lower end of the 2%–6% target band, is expected to ease further after recent tax cuts, while growth is likely to face a hit from US President Donald Trump's 50% export tariffs.  Read more here 2.The government's push to go ‘Swadeshi' in tech, endorsement by senior ministers, and the overall social media buzz have taken the downloads and Daily Active Usage (DAU) of Zoho's messaging app Arattai to record highs, report Sindhu Hariharan and Rohan Das. According to data from the market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, shared with BusinessLine, Arattai's downloads and daily active users in India have skyrocketed — increasing by 185 times and 40 times respectively, compared to the previous week. This massive jump happened between September 21st and 27th, right after the app came under the spotlight thanks to mentions by government officials. The instant messaging app from software firm Zoho, that is being touted as a WhatsApp rival, has seen an exponential growth across all parameters such as installs and usage, and app store rankings. Authorities are monitoring whether these platforms are complying with pricing norms and not withholding the intended consumer benefits from tax reductions. Sources said the e-commerce platforms cited ‘technical glitches' when discrepancies in pricing pre- and post-GST reduction were pointed out. This week, I sat down with Naftali “Naf” Jaman, a man whose career has stretched from engineering roles in the U.S. Air Force to leading open innovation programs for global giants like GM, Airbus, and LG Electronics. Along the way, he has helped launch startups in automotive safety, advised aviation and space ventures, and worked at the crossroads of academia, government, and industry. Our conversation centered on what Naf calls the inception method. It is the ability to plant an idea in someone else's mind and let them believe it is their own. The process demands patience, empathy, and a willingness to let go of credit in order to see the idea thrive.  Naf described how he built trust inside LG by taking executives out of the office, talking less about technology and more about culture and daily life, until he could gently introduce a concept that eventually reshaped their approach to in-car infotainment systems. What struck me most was his insistence that real influence begins not with clever pitches but with listening and creating the conditions for others to feel ownership of a solution. We explored the challenges large corporations face when they attempt to work with startups, often overwhelming them with bureaucracy or diluting their energy through misguided “startup challenges” that serve more as PR exercises than true collaborations.  Naf's preference is always to work one on one, helping a single leader take action on a problem they urgently need to solve, and quietly guiding them until the idea becomes theirs to champion. He also spoke about the role academia can play in solving early-stage R&D puzzles, highlighting his time at General Motors, where university researchers provided critical pieces of the hydrogen fuel cell puzzle long before commercialization was possible. Perhaps most provocatively, Naf shared his skepticism about dual-use technologies, which many in the innovation community hail as a promising path between defense and civilian markets. He argued that export controls and the slow timelines of defense procurement often strangle opportunities before they mature, making dual use more of a limitation than a catalyst. His candor about these challenges was refreshing, and a reminder that innovation is as much about what we choose not to pursue as what we chase. By the end of our conversation, I was reminded that the real work of innovation often happens quietly, in the spaces between people. It is about empathy, patience, and sometimes even a touch of psychological sleight of hand. As Naf put it, the greatest innovation of all is the human mind itself, provided we learn how to use it well.

Much of what's on display at CES is a vision of the future. The transparent TV's last year were early prototypes and this year they're on the market, albeit with a hefty price tag. There is more that's taking place behind the scenes in consumer interactions. Advertising is becoming more digital and smart devices are the new frontier in engagement. Media purveyors are looking to link consumer experiences across devices. The omnichannel strategies of the past have been realized in multi-screen engagement today. They are becoming the next retail channel in new and different ways that create opportunities, as long as businesses can master the technologies required to capitalize on them. Fortunately, this endless hard work has not gone unnoticed by companies like LG Electronics. In January 2024, Governor Jim Justice announced that the state of West Virginia and LG Electronics would be launching a strategic initiative to grow new business ventures in the Mountain State and advance the development of technologies for renewable energy, health care and industries of the future. Over the next five years, LG plans to launch several West Virginia-based businesses, which will collectively provide 275 high-skill jobs. To do this, LG will construct both a research and development and an engineering hub within the state that will hire software engineers, architects and developers. During last month's special legislative session, lawmakers passed Senate Bill 1002, which granted the agency a new round of funding for road improvements. Gov. Jim Justice said that repairing state roads plays an important role in improving quality of life for West Virginians and attracting new residents. When prospective residents look at “standard of life” in West Virginia, they look at highways, he said. Secretary of Transportation Jimmy Wriston said the repaving projects, along with the previously launched  “Operation R.I.P. Potholes,” are part of a coordinated effort to repair derelict roadways throughout West Virginia.
