Change is in the air. For the better. I know men that accredit their partners in their success, while helping any way they can in raising their children. But they are few. I admire women who do it all. Who do it without thanks. Who do it without any reward whatsoever, because they love their family. And still find time to climb the ladder in the workplace. Resilient in their quest for their American Dream. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/paula-julson/support

Briton Danielle Brown is a double Paralympic gold-medalist and five-time world champion in archery. She was also the first disabled athlete to represent England in an able-bodied category at the Commonwealth Games in 2020 - where she also won gold. Her career was cut short while she was training for the Rio in 2016 when the World Archery Federation said it would no longer recognise her disability. But Danielle pivoted to writing books - she penned One Hundred Reasons to Hope - which was inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore and his 100 laps of his garden raising money for the NHS. Her new book is Run Like a Girl, which has won the Sunday Times Children's Book of the Year 2022... which features 50 female athletes breaking barriers and achieving great things - including New Zealand's own Dame Valerie Adams.

Steve wants to know if Erin "runs like a girl" ... we're really not sure where he's going with this...
You might be asking…Run like a girl where did that come from. I use the inspiration around me … I know that nothing happens by accident, what we do, where we go, where we live, who our neighbors are. – Do you know your neighbors, can they contact you if something happens. Get to know your neighbors. Run like a girl. It was a movie, What Women Want, starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. Hele was an Add Executive and pitched a Nike commercial about women running… At the gym, in television ads and just in my mind's eye I see a lot of women running, No I see myself running. In fact I have envy did the app couch to 5k. and I'll one day soon run a 5k, but I know one thing for sure… I'll be running it like a girl There is a 2-time Olympic gold medalist and 2-time world soccer cup winner Mia Hamm and she says and I quote. “My coach said I run like a girl and I said if He ran a little faster, He could too.” Stay connected..... What do you think of when you hear the phrase that ends in "like a girl"? The words that come to mind are weak, loser and you aren't good enough, right? Well, it's time to flip the script and delete terms like this from our vocabularies for women in general and our future daughters and granddaughters. In this episode I talk about ways we can raise strong, independent, self assured females. Females that are proud to say, "I run like a girl!" Athletes Unlimited is a collective promoting a new way of thinking about professional sport, placing the player at the very heart and doing away with team owners. It's currently running leagues in women's volleyball, lacrosse and softball. Jon Patricof, the CEO at Athletes Unlimited, told us how this revolutionary new concept works. Could the development of AI help players avoid injury? That's one of the claims made by technology companies who operate automated video recording system that records the entire field without the need for a camera operator. Victoria Rich is the Director of Operations for the NWSL, where the technology is being used. Meanwhile, the system has also allowed some teams and leagues without any television contracts to stream their matches to fans and raise some revenue. Patrik Olsson, co-founder & CEO at Spiideo, explained how it works. Two times Paralympic archery gold medallist Danielle Brown explains how she used archery as a coping mechanism to deal with her chronic pain. Now retired, she has become an author and with the aim of inspiring other women, she has gathered 50 stories from different talented sportswomen in her latest book Run Like A Girl: 50 Extraordinary and Inspiring Sportswomen. My guest today is Lesley Cortright. Lesley set out to prove to herself and her daughters that you can do anything you put your mind to and that girls can do insanely hard things. She completed the Leadville 100, a 100-mile race through the heart of the Rocky Mountains, in 28 hours and 23 minutes, under the 30-hour minute time cap (something that only about 1/2 of the runners crazy enough to attempt are able to do). The experience changed her outlook on life and human potential. An outlook that has helped her build a photography business, capturing life's moments for others! Wellness Radio with Dr. Jeanette welcomes Mina Samuels, author of Run Like A Girl 365 Days: A Practical, Personal, Inspirational Guide for Women Athletes to share why are we 'running'? The show today is not just for runners, women, nor athletes; it is a conversation of the interaction with 'self' in the process of engaging in the world around us, being open to the challenges being presented and how we are honest with self on a daily basis. Where are we running to, what are we running from or where are we going? Are we running away from troubles or somethat we cannot achieve? "...running to her soul's journey and that is a different path" shares Dr. Jeanette, "running is an earth human existence and dancing is a mystical experience, how are we grounding in life" Mina shares a year of descriptive words that spill from her heart and thoughts as she takes the time to listen to herself through running outside, sitting in quiet moments or writing her pains. What is the truth we keep telling ourselves about who we are and what we do for life; are they really the truth or just a facade that we paint for others to like us? Is life a game of perfection or getting to? Perhaps life is a journey and the pebbles under our feet remind us where we are in life; enjoy the journey. In episode 80 of Fresh Tracks I speak with Mina Samuels, author of Run Like a Girl 365 Days a Year. Mina shares her story cutting Fresh Tracks and discusses how vital it is for women to not only show up in this world but pursue excellence while they are at it! Mina’s insights into how we can all find balance in our lives involves bringing out our inner athlete, even if we don’t identify as an athlete. The key lies in discovering what nourishes and empowers our inner strength and resolve. Mina believes a great way to do this is with our bodies through physical activity. Finding inspiration in something other than ourselves and understanding that transformation is ongoing – it’s a journey not a thing to overcome, is how we run like a girl. The truth is that showing up as our authentic selves each day is what creates our strength as women and allows us to be happy. Mina shares how recapturing and retaining the energy that fuels us forward is what leads us to create a life of Fresh Tracks. Show Notes: 3:30 – How our essential girlness gets socialized out of us and what to do about it 7:00 – Following her intuition in cutting her own Fresh Tracks 11:00 – Authenticity is not a value, it’s a right when creating Fresh Tracks 15:00 – Coming back to the “I got this” consciousness 21:30 –Showing up in the world and pursuing excellence 26:00 – How strong women make happy lives 30:00 – Giving yourself permission to color outside the lines About Mina Mina Samuels is a writer, playwright and performer, and in a previous incarnation, a litigation lawyer and human rights advocate. Peace, Love, and all that good stuff! WoS – Disfranchise – to deprive of a franchise, privilege, or right QoS – “Diversity and inclusion, which are the real grounds for creativity, must remain at the center of what we do.” Marco Bizzarri Off-Topic – Hy-Deia’s New project Brewin Talking points: The Disenfranchisement of Women in American Ideology Women as a collective are completely overlooked as it pertains to skill in American society. Especially black and brown women of color who have to go twice as hard as their white counter parts to even land jobs in American society. This disenfranchisement goes back generations and has been fought against for generations. Today we need to start and push the revolution toward advocating more for our women’s inclusion into male dominated roles. These are the real grounds for creativity and will ultimately maximize the content we create and put out. Media, podcasting, sports, television, anchors, modeling, public speaking… is all examples of jobs women are kept away from or told they cannot be apart of. Connecting this problem with our youth We often go throughout life doing and saying things we’ve learned throughout our upbringing. The problem of disenfranchisement of our women within American society as been present within our communities for some time now. With phrases like “you throw like a girl” or “you run like a girl” or “you’re a girl what do you know” or “girl don’t play basketball/football” or “volleyball is for girls, it’s a girl sport” etc. As we grow up and hear/use things... phrases like this it literally puts a girl in her place. Hearing those things enables thoughts of doubt and the belief that she cannot do what she wants to do. Reversing and eliminating this problem Be you. And teach the youth as a collective to be authentically them. Overstand that whatever you discover your calling to be is not subject to your gender or what people think. We all have a calling and it is up to us to identify that calling and fulfill it within our lifetime. If fulfilling it means you may lose some friends or even family then that’s a sacrifice you should be willing to make. As people we have to stand behind our young queens as they identify what their calling is and move toward fulfilling it. Don’t allow your own biases to dictate how you motivate the youth you service or just come in contact with. Empower them through creative approaches while reaffirming them that they are worthy of whatever their calling is no matter what society says. #Heed Thank you for checking out this episode of Introspective Insight: The Black Wallstreet Podcast and we hope you come back next week with a new set of ears.
