The Power of TrustProverbs 3:5-6 says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”This establishes our role as stewards and God as the owner, which gives us the freedom to look to Him for His plans for our money and not worry about our plans. The Power of FocusThe power of focus is to ask God what the next thing He would have us do is and to focus on that one thing until we progress on it before moving to the next. Proverbs 4:25 says, “Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.”Proverbs 16:3 also says, to “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”Research shows we can't multitask, so focusing on one goal at a time is essential. The Power of PrioritiesWe can think of financial priorities for the "live, give, grow” pie, starting with the 10/10/80 principle—give 10% first, save/grow 10%, and use the remaining 80% for living expenses. Prioritize giving first, then growing, then living expenses. The big priorities within living are housing, transportation, and food, and we should keep those to less than half of our take-home pay.The Power of PlanningWe must spend money on purpose by making a plan on paper or digitally before each month begins. We recommend using a budgeting app like FaithFi to digitally allocate money to "envelopes" each month for planned expenses. Proverbs 27:23 tells us to “Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds,”Larry Burkett popularized the envelope system in the past, and even digitally savvy couples sometimes find it helpful to use cash envelopes to control their spending in some categories better. The Power of CashIf you only use cash, you can't easily go into debt. Proverbs 21:20 reminds us, "Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man's dwelling, but a foolish man devours it.”Proverbs 22:7 also says, “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.”The Power of Decision-MakingGod's Word teaches that we can always go to Him when unsure of what to do.James 1:5 tells us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”Here is a flowchart approach to decision-making, asking questions like if the expense is essential, whether it will help or hurt financial goals, whether it can wait, and whether there are less expensive options:Is this expense essential for our family's survival? Will this purchase help my financial situation? Will this purchase hurt my financial situation? Will this purchase move me toward meeting my financial goals? Can we wait to incur this expense? Is there a less expensive alternative? On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:When I had my first baby, I had an attorney draft a will. Now I'm finding all of this about probate. My youngest is 18, and I am looking to see what I can do instead of having a will because of probate court. I made sure all my accounts had beneficiaries, and I'm looking to get my house title transferred upon death. What would you advise for that? How can I eliminate that will since it doesn't apply anymore? My kids are older and other people that I put in there I no longer want to be in there. Medicare has notified me that they automatically provide prescription or drug coverage, so they gave me a new card. However, I already have Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage, which works fine, but I would have to opt out of what Medicare provides. I started to opt out of what Medicare provided but wanted your feedback since they already provided it. In today's Mom On Purpose Book Club episode, we're are going to revisit Greg McKeown's book "Essentialism". This was one of the very first books that I did when I started the book club and it was crazy to go back and reread it and see how many things from the book I applied. This was one of those life changing books for me and I hope that it will also help you identify what is important for you right now by adopting essentialism. Even if you have read it before. I would highly recommend listening to this as we talk about it, and discover how to live with purpose and intention. What you'll learn:Ideas for decluttering life to focus on what's most importantThe significance of focusing on the "vital few" instead of the "trivial many"The importance of solitude, inward reflection, play, sleep, and selective focusThe value of boundaries and when it's okay to quitFeatured on the Show: Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeownClick HERE to watch this video to learn The 3 Things to Avoid When Reading Self-Help BooksHow to Connect with Lara: Web: www.larajohnsoncoaching.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/j.lara.johnson/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/larajohnsoncoaching Work with Lara: www.larajohnsoncoaching.com/work-with-me/

On episode 4 of The CS Sports Talk, Shawn and Lily discuss the Dodgers and their over a billion dollar spend on just two players, the Detroit Pistons record setting, 27 game losing streak, Jaire Alexander's recent suspension, some more UofA footfall, and more! The intersection of sports and business runs deep, particularly when it comes to the attitude required to excel in both arenas. This connection is more than just metaphorical; it's a reflection of the similar mindsets, disciplines, and strategies that drive success in both fields. For business leaders and entrepreneurs, drawing lessons from the world of sports, especially regarding attitude, can be incredibly enlightening and empowering.Resilience and PerseveranceIn sports, resilience and perseverance are key. Athletes often face setbacks, injuries, and losses, yet they continue to train, compete, and improve. This attitude is directly applicable to business. The journey of an entrepreneur or a business leader is fraught with challenges - market fluctuations, competition, financial pressures, and failures. Adopting a sports-like resilience means viewing these challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, rather than as insurmountable obstacles. It's about getting back up after a setback, learning from mistakes, and persistently working towards your goals.Teamwork and LeadershipTeam sports, in particular, offer valuable insights into effective teamwork and leadership - skills that are essential in the business world. A successful sports team operates on the principles of clear communication, mutual support, shared goals, and trust among team members, guided by a coach or a captain. Similarly, in business, fostering a culture of collaboration, encouraging open communication, and leading with vision and integrity are crucial for achieving collective goals. Leaders in business can learn from sports coaches who inspire, motivate, and strategize, turning a group of individuals into a cohesive, high-performing team.Goal Setting and StrategyAthletes are renowned for their goal-oriented approach. They set specific, measurable, and time-bound goals, whether it's improving their performance, winning a championship, or qualifying for a tournament. This approach is mirrored in the business setting, where setting clear goals and developing strategic plans are fundamental to success. Both fields require a systematic approach to goal setting, regular performance evaluation, and the flexibility to adjust strategies as needed.Competitive SpiritSports are inherently competitive, and this competitive spirit can be a driving force in business as well. A healthy competitive attitude inspires individuals and companies to innovate, continuously improve, and strive to be the best in their field. It's about recognizing the competition, learning from them, and then pushing beyond to create your unique value proposition. This competitive spirit, when combined with ethical practices and a focus on quality, can lead to sustained business success.Mental Toughness and FocusThe mental aspect of sports - focus, mental toughness, and the ability to perform under pressure - is perhaps one of the most crucial parallels with business. Athletes train not just physically, but also mentally, to handle the pressures of competition. In business, similar mental toughness is required to navigate high-pressure situations, make tough decisions, and maintain focus amidst distractions and pressures.Embracing Change and AdaptabilityJust as sports evolve with new rules, technologies, and strategies, the business world is in a constant state of flux. Successful athletes adapt to changes in their sport, be it changes in competition, playing conditions, or rules.

This question is not just relevant but essential for those of us on the path of recovery, as it touches on the core issue of dealing with our reactions when we no longer hide behind addictive behaviors. The externally focused mind highlights the common trap of seeking satisfaction from outside sources, which often leads to frustration, anger, and a sense of failure when things don't align the way that “we” want them to. We must look inward and understand that true peace and alignment come from within, not from the external world. This internal focus shifts the emphasis from external validation to internal peace and self-awareness. Recovery is not just about abstaining from addictive behaviors, but also about elevating our consciousness and living a life of presence, kindness, and compassion.Tommy discussesShifting our focus from external validation to internal peaceWhy we all need self-reflection and inner focusThe benefits of developing a ‘neutral mind' How to stay centered during difficult timesThe true nature of addiction SPECIAL LIMITED TIME OFFER: Join Tommy Rosen for The 8-hour Awakening, a live, online, transformational journey beginning December 9, 2023. Jonathan Jay's first foray into business transactions dates back to 1999, when he sold a business, and later in 2006, he made his first acquisition. Five years ago, he began imparting his wisdom to others, teaching them the intricacies of business buying. His outstanding achievement of buying a group of companies from a private equity fund for just £1, only to sell them 11 months later for a staggering £1m+, sparked a surge of interest from aspiring dealmakers. Jonathan decided to answer their call and thus, dealmakers.co.uk was born. Today, it stands as one of the world's premier training companies, dedicated to teaching people how to acquire small businesses without cash or risk. Jonathan's approach to teaching is commendable - he believes in providing access to quality education for everyone, offering 80% of his educational resources for free through his podcast, YouTube channel, and books. HOW TO AVOID COMMON MISTAKES AND MAXIMIZE SUCCESS IN BUYING BUSINESSES As we navigate an economic recession brought on by the pandemic, there are ample opportunities for buying businesses as many owners accelerate retirement plans due to economic uncertainty. If you're thinking about buying a business, the current climate might offer you numerous motivated sellers and great deals. Jonathan has identified key challenges that people often encounter when buying businesses. Understanding these potential pitfalls can significantly enhance your business acquisition success. Don't Skip the ProcessFirst, it's essential to understand that buying a business is a systematic process - it isn't something you should make up as you go along. Jonathan has a complete business buying system that consists of 21 steps. The common mistake he notices is when people choose not to follow this system, leading to longer transaction times and higher costs. In his words, "The people who don't follow the system always seem to... take longer, cost them more money." Don't Use Your Own MoneyThe second mistake that Jonathan sees people make is spending their own money to buy a business. He argues that your "skin in the game" should be the effort and skill you bring to the deal, rather than your hard-earned money or family's money. In his opinion, you should aim to buy a business where you don't risk any of your own cash. Don't Buy a JobThe third pitfall is buying businesses that are too small - buying yourself a job rather than a business. The argument is that buying a million-dollar business, even as your first one, has its advantages. It will likely have better financials and management and be more stable. Furthermore, a million-dollar business making a 20% profit offers $200,000 per year, which can significantly transform your financial situation. Have Clarity and FocusThe final point revolves around the importance of having clarity and focus. Jonathan stresses that successful dealmakers know where they're going, what they want to achieve, how they're going to achieve it, and then take big leaps rather than small hops. • • • FOR MORE ON JONATHAN JAY:https://dealmakers.co.uk/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathan-jay-3556b230/ Corey Kupfer is an expert strategist, negotiator, and dealmaker. Today we're talking about Sensate Focus, one of my favorite goto things, and something I would often use in my therapy practice. What is Sensate Focus and where did it come from?It was developed by Masters and Johnson as a way to help couples learn more about themselves and each other and move towards a more intimate relationship. The aim is to build trust and intimacy within your relationship, helping you both give and receive pleasure.  How long will Sensate Focus take? It's not a race to an end, it's a continuous reinforcement and it can help to overcome negative reactions to intimacy. You don't want to rush through it, it can take months to get through the first two phases. Only move onto the different phases of Sensate Focus when you're both ready. Some ground rules to get started: Choose a time and place that is acceptable for both of you.  Choose music, lighting, and aromas that are suitable.Turn off your phone, tv, gadgets, and other distractions. And lock the door. There are three phases to Sensate Focus and one pre-phase. Pre-phase: Non-genital sensate focus clothed (Start here if you have previous trauma, or are someone who doesn't enjoy physical touch.)Phase 1: Non-genital sensate focus unclothed (non sexual touching) Phase 2: Genital sensate focus (sexual touching but no penetration)Phase 3: Penetrative sensate focus (sexual touching with penetration)Non-genital sensate focusThis phase focuses on touch, sensuality and mutual exploration free from any concern that it's going to lead to sex. When in phase one, both partners know that sex and orgasm are off the table.  Before the session starts you want to decide who is going to go first, and then you'll take turns. First,  concentrate on touching the parts of the body that are normally visible. When you're ready start to include the back, neck, and butt. Finally, bring in the chest, stomach, shoulders, thighs, but avoid breasts, top of legs and the groin area.  It's okay to stay in phase one for however long you and your partner decide you want to. Genital sensate FocusThe main focus of this phase is to increase each person's pleasure and awareness of each other's response from different types of stimulation. During this phase you might want to incorporate some lubricant or some bedroom accessories. Penetration is not permitted in this phase. If orgasam happens, it happens,  but the point here is to focus on the pleasure, and how your partner responds to positive stimulation.First, incorporate touching of the breasts and nipples. Next, include the area around the genitals. Then, introduce the touching of the genitals. After a while you may also want to incorporate some oral as well as kissing, licking, and sucking. Penetrative Sensate FocusYou've spent the time on the nongenital and genital phases of sensate focus so that you can now begin to include the penetration with your finger, toys, and or the penis. You still want to incorporate and pay attention to the parts of the body that we explored in the previous phases. While orgasm and intercouse is permitted in this phase, it is still not the goal.   First, incorporate different forms of gentle penetration.  Start with little thrusting, enjoy the sensation of containment, and feeling the fullness inside. Try first with one person on top, and then switch. Later you can incorporate more of the thrusting but with the person being penetrated in full control. The aim of  this phase and sensate focus as a whole is to focus on the enjoyment of the touch and growing the intimacy between the two of you. Connect with Rachel!Instagram: @The_Rachel_MaineWebsite: https://linktr.ee/WellnessSexpertiseFacebook: Rachel MaineEmail: therachelmaine@gmail.com

Inside Influence
The Impact Zone - Surfing fear at 50 feet

Inside Influence

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2019 78:12

Now I have a bit of an obsession with fear. Or - at least I didn’t realise I had - until looking over some of the amazing guests we’ve had and have lined up for the podcast this year. And realising that fear - or at least mastering fear - seems to be a constant and underlying theme. So that raises the question of why - what has fear got to do with influence - and why can’t I seem to leave it alone. I’ll tell you why - other than because it’s a daily dance of my own in one way shape or form. As it is for anyone that’s ever tried to do or say anything in the public domain - or any domain for that matter. I think it’s because - over the years of working alongside influencers - I have met and worked with one too many brilliant people, one too many brilliant ideas, companies, brands and products. One too many people with something important to say or contribute. Who have all been left on the sidelines as a result of this statement: ‘I will do this… when I feel more...’ Sound familiar? Essentially - I will show up, stand up, be seen - and offer the full force of what I have to offer. When I feel less fearful. So - in that sense - fear - or the ability to move towards it, harness it, rewrite it’s stories and relinquish it’s control over when and how we show up. Is the ultimate key to influence. Without it - the rest - negotiation tools, presentation skills, content algorithms, leadership habits - all mean nothing at all. So - there’s my why.Now back to this episode. As a metaphor for negotiating with fear - surfing a 50 foot wave has to be on top of the list. As one of Australia’s best big wave surfers, my next guest Mark Matthews understands better than most the the intersections of fear, focus and staying in place when backing out seems like the only sane option. In fact - one of my favorite moments in our conversation is where he talks about ‘Holding the line’. I don’t know if many of you will remember that infamous scene from Braveheart before the great battle - possibly showing my age here - where Mel Gibson shouts ‘HOLD!’ over and over again as the charging army gets rapidly closer. Mark talks about how he literally uses this technique, this phrase - over and over again when at the crest of a wave - to keep himself in position until that exact right second. Basically - to prevent himself from reacting to adrenalin by backing out or moving too fast.Unbelievably - as you’ll hear - Mark was frightened of the ocean as a child and spent his childhood visits with family to the ocean sitting on the beach. YET - he went on to carve out a niche as one of the top big wave surfers in the world. Having surfed many of the world's heaviest and biggest waves including Cape Fear, NSW, Teahupoo (hope I got that one right), Tahiti, Maui and - well - if you know anything about big waves - you’ll be able to recite the rest. He has won three Oakley Big Wave Awards and is considered one of the best big waves surfers in the world. Then - while in surfing in Australia in 2016 - Mark fell feet first onto a shallow reef - waking up later in a helicopter in a full body brace. He had tore his artery, nerve, multiple ligaments and fractured his shin. After an artery transfer he was assured by Dr’s that he would keep his leg - but with that kind of nerve damage - he would never be able to surf again. What followed was a new journey into fear. The fear of starting again. Only this time against the odds - and while the whole world was watching. In this epic conversation Mark and I dive into: The role of risk analysis in dealing with fearHow to ‘hold the line’ when you’re so committed you can’t back downWhy pushing any boundary starts with being unreasonableHow to ignore the feelings that make you want to run - and swap fear for focusThe power of embracing the pain - to stop the brain shutting you down. How to consciously choose your next adrenaline kick to take you to the next levelAND why you should always train for wipe out scenarios - in order to push past where other people would choke. I loved my conversation with Mark. He’s unassuming, humble - and yet driven to take on challenges that will blow your mind. Just quickly Google his name and look at the images that come up - that will be enough for you to get a sense of what I’m talking about. So - if you know you have a 50 foot opportunity or challenge coming your way - or maybe feel like you’re surfing one right now - then this is for you. Sit back, buckle up - and enjoy my conversation with phenomenal big wave surfer Mark Matthews. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

FocusThe word "focus" conjures a number of different reactions these days. For instance, some immediately hear the hit single of the 1970s while others visualize the action to the lens of a camera, and probably even more think of the compact car produced by Ford. But the interesting thing is when you hear "focus" used around Ford today, it may refer more to the company's concentration that it does the car. As the sole member of the former Big Three who has not taken any government money, it has been somewhat overshadowed by the tsunami of bad news that's been flooding the other two. But as the bankruptcies, resignations and negotiations have grabbed the headlines these past few months, the blue oval has been flying under the media's radar all the while winning awards, improving quality and regaining market share. Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas, believes that it's thanks in big part to the company's "focus". On this week's Autoline, Mr. Fields talks about that focus as well as some of the new product it's releasing this year and the future of the company as a whole. Joining John on the panel is Jean Jennings from Automobile Magazine and Bryce Hoffman of The Detroit News.
