She offers tips and advice of how new teachers can be more confident and ways to cope with nervousness. Deborah Engerman trained under Wally Saunders in Pikesville, Maryland, from 1977 to 1979, and with the Baltimore Ballet School (formerly the Maryland Ballet School) under the direction of Wendy Robinson from 1979 to 1985, in the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) tradition. From Tia Neyman I know bios are supposed to be written with a serious tone and used for blatant self-promotion.  However, in my opinion, they are seldom read and in too many cases a great deal of liberty is taken with the truth.  Now one is required of me so here goes a rather “all too much me” written take on “me.”I am a native Houstonian and as such have tremendous pride in my city and love the “old historic buildings that avoided being torn down.  I fantasize about the truly great elegant stores that reigned in my youth.  In fact, my absolute favorite building of the past, a landmark Houston owned store run by our very own Sakowitz family, is frequently a destination for perambulating our dog to which, much like a verse in a once popular song, is currently a downtown parking garage.  Paved paradise and put up a parking lot… Shame! Shame!I started modelling as an elementary student and professionally at age 14 I signed with an agent named Glenn Tillotson.  I modeled Saturdays with 2 or 3 other teen models in the Sky Terrace Restaurant in Sakowitz downtown store, my first exposure to elegance and refinement. I walked all their teen fashion shows which were mostly back to school shows in the fall and holiday. Around 18 or 19 I signed with the leading fashion agency in Houston and built a career.  I worked regularly (a feat of accomplishment in Houston) building a huge part of my work in trunk shows (likely due to an innate comprehension of modeling actually being a form of sales), fashion shows and special fashion events eventually branching into print and commercials including voice on camera.  This required me becoming a member of SAG/AFTRA.  Client stores included Neiman Marcus, Sak's, Marshall Fields, Frost Brothers, Joskes, Foley', etc.  My husband at the time was a jeweler. He was murdered when I was into the 6th month of a high-risk pregnancy.  Total financial destruction as well as emotional devastation.  It was a turning point in which I straightened my shoulders and charged headfirst into creating a plan to provide for myself and soon to be born child.  I expanded into Dallas, Chicago and New York.  Clearly not the usual start to your average modeling success story.  In my opinion the secret to success in the industry is common sense and business ethics also referred to as a strong work ethic.  I worked tirelessly. Rules were different in that era. There is protection in the industry now to prevent models from being taken advantage of.  To model successfully you have to be thick skinned because you face constant rejection. To save myself embarrassment I will skip the next era of my personal life.  Suffice it to say my strong survival skills were put to good use, and we all have a husband or two we'd prefer to forget….At 35 I again married (one last time) a witty gentleman who worked for a then little known company called Enron. At some point we decided to turn a hobby of mine into an actual business. Be very careful making business decisions drinking margaritas and eating Mexican food on a Saturday afternoon! We took my personal stress management hobby of making pearl and gemstone 18k gold jewelry into a business and grew it to a company that provided work for women who only wanted to work the hours their children were in school, retired looking for something enjoyable to do to earn shoe money or full time, benefits paid staff. It was exhausting, but TiaMia was not only an education in how to turn mistakes around but how to sell, inspire & create.  Great friendships were made along the way and having to retire due to ill health and the additional stress traveling imposed on health broke my heart.Enter the tragedy of health crises in my life!  I was diagnosed with a rare genome of Hepatitis C, and because it was rare discovering a cure was the result of years of treatment failures.  These treatments were gruesome, expensive, time consuming and living Hell. My family was supportive, my Great Dane Merlin tirelessly at my side and my faith, not to mention failing to realize how seriously ill I actually was, saw me through it all.  Originally, I thought once I was cured of the Hepatitis, the Cryoglobulinemia Vasculitis and the Hyponatremia all would be gone, and my life would return to normal.  I “thought…” The treatments used to save my fingers and toes as well as my life brought on more scary health issues after the fact.  Massive arthritis, ongoing Hyponatremia and quadruple joint replacement seriously interfered with my plan, my life, my normalcy and challenged my sense of humor!  All through the Hep C I trained Pilates daily. When I wasn't as ill I ran and lifted weights.  I managed to stay in surprisingly great shape given my age and my health challenges.  Training kept me sane, reduced the tears and frankly, averted my potential frustration with a broken system centered on a few acquiring great wealth at the cost of millions of people in poor health. At 50 I started studying ballet. Now, a wise woman my age would start with one day a week. I was not wise, and I was a wee bit of an obsessive perfectionist so I danced 5 days a week, sometimes 6, took group classes, private lessons with a Vaganova trained Russian dancer and eventually started pointe work. Walking fashion shows built strong feet plus my training helped maintain strong legs.  I was naturally limber so ballet became the replacement in my heart for modeling and TiaMia.  My current ballet master has stuck with me through joint replacements, neck surgery, back treatments, injuries…..Then I turned 60! The popularity of older, gray haired models spurred the idea in my head I could return to the fashion industry and once again model. Sort of a Phoenix rising from the ashes story.  Well…. It took off with a bang.  Sort of!  I had to learn this thing called social media which did not exist in my era of modeling!  My tenacity allowed me to hit the ground running after running mostly into brick walls.  I was relentless and kept asking questions, exploring options and agencies and basically sorting “BS” from fact.  I booked and walked a few Fashion Week shows and discovered I loved print.  In fact in one month, I had the cover of one magazine and editorials in three others!  I was on a roll except for one unanticipated event: Covid! As the world ground to a hibernating halt, a friend who worked as a stylist introduced me to a designer. Together, with 3 other models residing in Houston. New York and the UK, we filmed self-videos in our homes and surrounding safe areas which ultimately were merged together to form one sensational marketing piece for a jacket designer.  Covid has eased and my return to modeling has not regained its original traction. This makes me sad, but I trust that God will continue to throw options in my path, and it's up to me to make productive choices.  I've been fortunate to stumble into the life of likeminded women who believe in and support our fellow women.  Ironically, the majority of our conversations invariably involve cars and shoes. To summarize my story, life is a series of triumphs, mistakes, tragedies and comedies.  It's what you learn from these experiences that form the better you.  There are always people you stumble upon that can become lasting friends or are simply likeminded providing opportunities that open a door to another step in life. A personal challenge is the isolation that occurs for older people, especially those with health challenges. It's not just my fellow over 60 peers or the health challenged living in constant pain crowd.  It's sadly a direction our world has taken by creating Ageism and devaluing the over 45 population.  We have a culture that literally worships youth.  Young women likely know little of elegance and glamor but are overwhelmed with marketing strategies promoting sexiness, turning objectifying oneself into a fashion statement and lifetime goal. Young teen models tend to hang on to the stories I tell backstage at shows about eras past with details of Christian Dior and the New Look Era, the glamour of old Hollywood style and real stockings.  The art of dressing elegantly.  Young women know little of how to be the true originals and not following a pack.  Daring to embrace the self.  It makes me sad.

043: Waltzing into Spring with Ballet Balancé

According to Agrippina Vaganova in Basic Principles of Classical Ballet**, Pas Balancé “Is one of the simple pas allegro, which is easily done even by children. In classical dancing it is often used in waltz tempo.” (p.99) I love to waltz alone or as a pair, and find it's swingy rhythms intoxicating, much as its early critics were! There are many famous waltzes in classical ballets, including “Sleeping Beauty” and “Cinderella” as well as more modern pieces such as Balanchine's “Vienna Waltzes” to music by Richard Strauss. Since it's St. Patrick's Day today, I've been sharing Irish folk music in dance this month, including a lovely Irish Waltz that makes me want to dance! Although the Waltz has become a beloved ballroom and social dance as well as inspiration for balletic movement, at first it caused a scandal due to it's closed hold and mesmerizing swirling movements. In the Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet**, Gail Grant describes balancé as a "Rocking step. This step is very much like a pas de valse and is an alternation of balance, shifting the weight from one foot to the other. Balancé may be done crossing the foot either front or back. [...] Balancé may also be done en avant or en arrière facing croisé or effacé and en tournant." (p.11) Vaganova describes the performance of a basic ballet balance: “Stand in 5th position, right foot front. From demi-plié, do a light jeté with the right foot to the side, and then draw left foot back (on count one). On count two change to the left foot on half toe, and on three lower yourself again on the right foot in demi-plié, and raise the left one sur le cou-de-pied back. The next balancé will be to the left, i.e. jeté left, etc.” Agrippina Vaganova in Basic Principles of Classical Ballet** (p.99-100) I find in describing a balletic waltzing step to dancers of other forms, it compares well with modern dance's “Triplets,” or “The Pony” of the 1960's. In a blog and podcast coming soon, I will discuss musical meter, ¾ time, and so forth, but for now it is helpful to think of counting a waltz step as “one and uh two and uh three and uh four and uh...” or “one two three, two two three, three two three, four two three...” unlike other even meters such as marching rhythms, you'll notice is has a up-and-down or swingy feeling. Stay tuned on my YouTube Channel and Blog for more about this delightful ballet movement and more!

Breaking a vicious circle happens most times when you hit rock bottom. What if we weren't waiting for that and educating ourselves as soon as possible? It's one of the messages that I got from my exchange with Frey Faust, the founder of Axis Syllabus. He danced for several iconic choreographers such as Merce Cunningham, Daniel Ezralow, Stephen Petronio and Meredith Monk but felt that something was wrong as a lot of dancers around him were getting injured and as he was feeling more and more pain throughout his career. But, he still had to reach the point of not being able to walk to dive into the scientific findings of the study of the human body and movement in order to find a better way of training and moving. Discover Frey's story in this episode. “Definite stability is achieved only when the dancer realizes and feels the colossal part the back plays in aplomb. The stem of aplomb is the spine. The dancer should learn to feel and control her spine through observation of muscular sensations in the region of the back during various movements. When you manage to get the feeling of it, and to connect it with the muscles in the regions of the waist, you will be able to perceive this stem of stability.” - Basic Principles of Classical Ballet: Russian Ballet Technique of Agrippina Vaganova “Stability & Aplomb” is the second in my podcast series on the Elements of Dance, where I'll be explaining each Element, including The Body, Action, Shape & Shaping, Space, Time, and Quality/Energy and how I use them in choreography, criticism, teaching, and reflective practice. Related YouTube Video soon to come: "Yoga for Integration - Bandhas & Kapalabhati Pranayama" Related Podcasts: 011: Creating Good Space: yogic sukha & sthira / steadiness & ease & 002: Finding a Centered State of Being I have noticed in my work as a dancer and as a yoga practitioner that there are certain universal physical, anatomic, and kinesiological principles that help us to perform successfully, and there are therefore similar ways that we use the supportive musculature of the body to support our aims. Of course the body works how it works and obeys physical laws, no matter what discipline we practice. I enjoy how the approaches, language, and visualization from different philosophies (including of course yoga and dance, which also take from other traditions and take diverse forms) can help create transformation and growth in our chosen areas of focus. In yoga we use pranayama or breath techniques as well as asana or postures to develop stability and ease. In the Yoga Sutra Patanjali speaks of the necessity for both steadiness and ease, in our practice. In her manual of ballet technique, Vaganova includes “Stability & Aplomb” in her basic elements of classical technique. A key example is breath and core support, or integration of the systems of the body. One technique to support yoga practice and physical integration for dance and athletic endeavor is engagement of the Bandhas. Three of the most commonly applied bandhas are the Mula, Uddiyana, & Jalandhara, which together form the “master bandha,” the Maha Bandha. Bandhas fall under the larger classification of Mudras, which can be gestures or positions of the hands or other parts of the body, with bandhas specifically involving, engagement or “locks” of specific muscle groups. The Vaganova method is a ballet technique and training system devised by the Russian dancer and pedagogue Agrippina Vaganova (1879–1951). Balanchine’s style has been described as neoclassic, a reaction to the Romantic anti-classicism, (which had turned into exaggerated theatricality) that was the prevailing style in Russian and European ballet when he had begun to dance. Ekaterina Shchelkanova, a former soloist of American Ballet Theatre and Kirov Ballet, established the Open World Dance Foundation in 2010 after recognizing that the art form she loves could help the many orphans in her hometown of St. Petersburg, Russia. Through Open World Foundation, she also runs a successful summer intensive program, presenting students a rare opportunity to train with master teachers with a direct connection to Vaganova Ballet Academy. Ekaterina, or Katya, began her journey in St. Petersburg, Russia. From the time she was a little girl, she dreamed of becoming a dancer. In 1988, she graduated from the Vaganova Ballet Academy,;in the class of Professor Ludmila Safronova, one of Agrippina Vaganova's last students. She was invited to the Kirov, now Mariinsky Theater, and started her career with the company as a soloist. After performing the Kirov rep for several years, Katya decided to uproot and move to New York. In a class with beloved teacher David Howard, she had a chance meeting with Mikhail Baryshnikov. After explaining that she was not dancing with a company at the time, he encouraged her to keep dancing. With his words of encouragement, she built her confidence and in January 1995, Ekaterina joined the American Ballet Theatre (ABT). There she worked with choreographers Twyla Tharp and Mark Morris, dancing solo and leading parts in the broad repertoire of American Ballet Theatre and travelling extensively with the company. In 2001, Ekaterina left ABT to work with Twyla Tharp in creating "Moving Out", the Broadway musical by Billy Joel. Just one year later, she debuted in the Oscar award winning film, Chicago, in the role of Hunyak. She and the other principal actors received a Screen Actors Guild Award. Then in 2004, Ekaterina produced and starred in The End of Silence,a film by Anita Doron. Later, in 2005, Ekaterina served as Artistic Director of Berlin Children's Art Festival and began her teaching and coaching career at Royal Ballet of Canadian and Les Grands Ballet Canadiens de Montreal. In her heart, Katya knew she needed to reach out to children in a more meaningful way. She began to reflect on the difficult life of a ballet dancer and her gratitude for her much needed family's support. She then started to wonder about those who don't have parents. These thoughts lead Ekaterina to research orphans in Russia, a country that has the highest number of orphans anywhere in the world. Russian orphanages are numbered rather than named; there are 120 in St. Petersburg alone. Ekaterina knew she had to get involved, and when she mentioned the idea to her friend, Baryshnikov, he encouraged her to follow her instinct.
