The All Local Morning for Saturday September 2nd, 2023
Chris Holman welcomes back Teri Sand, SHRM-CP, PHR, CBSP, CRP, Business Services Manager, Capital Area Michigan Works!, Lansing, MI, but serving Ingham Eaton, and Clinton Counties THEME: Job opportunities and challenges in transportation and auto manufacturing. Teri, welcome back, please discuss challenges in finding bus drivers, CATA hiring, and auto supplier demand in anticipation of MBN's September 12th Mobility & Talent panel featuring MICHauto? ● Many transportation companies in the Lansing region and beyond are seeking employees. ○ Companies are unable to keep up with the demand for truck drivers as they're unable to recruit, hire, and train fast enough. ■ Xavier Express and Willow Creek Farms Trucking have both been searching for Truck Drivers. ○ CATA (Capital Area Transportation Authority) has especially taken a hit to the bus driver, mechanic, and office worker shortages. ○ Dean Transportation recruiting for School Bus Drivers. ■ Teri, please discuss any recent trends you have been seeing in these industries along with how job seekers can find jobs with our Weekly Hot Jobs Report? ● Research supports that the auto manufacturing industry has fallen short of meeting demands. ○ According to Michigan State University supply chain faculty (No. 1 ranked supply chain department in the nation) the industry is struggling to keep up with demands due to the fact that the automotive industry operates on a just-in-time inventory management model. ■ Just-in-time inventory management model, How is that impacting this sector? Parts arrive hours or even minutes before they're put on the assembly line. Hence the name, parts arrive just-in-time to be used. ■ There are 30,000 parts in the average car. If you're missing one or a few of those parts, you can't build a car. ■ If you're not producing vehicles, which is what drives your revenue, you're eating into your profitability. Plus, you suddenly have inventory piling up that you don't have space for. ○ The problem with this model is that it has to function exactly as you designed it to. When these models start to break and fall apart, the repercussions are huge. (low supply, high demand) ○ Just-in-time inventory by its very nature also affects staff. Workers at the various automotive manufacturing suppliers must regularly adjust their schedules. The suppliers and their staff often get very little notice when a production is going to run late. That makes childcare, transportation, and basic work/life balance challenging. The UAW contracts, how does that fit into all this? ○ We won't know for a few months whether the UAW contract negotiations this Fall could impact any of this. Thanks, Teri, and thank you for getting our audience primed for the upcoming Speakers Series event ● Stay tuned for more information regarding MBN's September 12 Mobility Panel featuring MICHauto & MEDC, Time: 11:00 am to 1:30 pm ○ Location: Friendship Hall, Capital Region International Airport. » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCqNX… » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/

Could this change things for rural school bus drivers? The Government has announced what it calls "wage consistency funding" for school bus drivers. It's worth $26 million over four years, and comes on top of the extra funding for council-run school buses announced in October. The idea is to keep rural school bus drivers' wages consistent with public transport services. Bus and Coach Chief Executive Ben McFadgen says school bus drivers have been impacted by stagnant wages for years and that this announcement is great news. Adam Foreman talks about School Bus Drivers on how and why bus drivers are important for the kids. Bus drivers probably do more training than anybody because they are responsible for the safety of your kids. They are the first and last interaction that kids have everyday. We need people that care about the kids' safety and their welfare. Bus drivers have to go through months and months of training to make sure that they operate safety hazards correctly, part-time disciplinarian, and other excessive training on how they de-escalate if there's a problem. They thoroughly screened, background checked, their driving records and they have to get the proper license to drive that certain vehicle. They also go through training where they get to know how to do a radio call when a kid is lost or a kid didn't go on the bus or the kid stayed on the bus and did not go off his stop. It really takes a special person to be able to do that. Bus drivers should be genuine and take good care of the students. Must value the children on a bus, and that becomes the profile of a School Bus Driver. We need people who are willing to fill that role and requirements required to be a bus driver. After over two decades behind bars, Curtis Flowers has his case dropped. Then, the CDC issues an eviction moratorium, protecting renters through the end of 2020. We examine how the action affects tenants and landlords in Mississippi.Plus, bus drivers in a Mississippi school district are being denied routes over a conflict involving working hours and compensation. Segment 1:When Curtis Flowers posted bail and left prison in December, his future remained uncertain. He had been tried for capital murder six times, convicted four times, and each of those four convictions - the most recent by the U.S. Supreme Court - were reversed due to prosecutorial misconduct by District Attorney Doug Evans. Soon after, Evans withdrew from the case and the office of Attorney General Fitch was appointed in his place. Now, Flowers' future is a little clearer. Last week Fitch's office announced it is dropping the case, meaning for the first time in 23 years Curtis Flowers won't be subject to charges he has long-denied. Robert McDuff of the Mississippi Center for Justice joined the Flowers defense team after Supreme Court reversed the conviction and death sentence in Flowers' sixth trial. He shares more about the long history of the case in part one of a conversation with MPB's Desare Frazier.Segment 2:Mississippians who can't afford to pay rent because of coronavirus-related job loss are protected from evictions under a new moratorium by the CDC. A federal moratorium previously offered extensive protections for renters, but that expired at the start of this month. To qualify for the new moratorium, renters must prove in court that they are out of work because of the coronavirus, and are pursuing government assistance. Jarvis Dortch, Executive Director of the ACLU of Mississippi, tells our Kobee Vance the move by the CDC helps, but it doesn't erase all barriers for poor residents. Segment 3:The coronavirus pandemic is presenting unprecedented challenges to public schools. Between socially distanced classrooms and virtual learning, school districts are making changes to accommodated the variety of ways children are learning in the world of COVID-19. For Columbus City Schools, some changes have resulted in a clash between administration and the district's bus drivers. In a story first reported by the Commercial Dispatch, drivers for Columbus City Schools walked out last week over a dispute regarding hours and wages. Renarda Dent is one of those drivers.
