Mentioned in the previous episode so I checked up on the current state of the Haringey Repair Cafes and I was pleased to see how professional they have gotten since I last looked at them. Chis was also super easy to connect with - I think apart from our German surnames we have quite a bit in common (both interested in and involved with one million projects at any one time). We covered so many topics from start to finish - longstanding fans will recognise projects featuring in previous episodes. The Running Out of Time baton has now reached the south coast of England, and in this episode of this Carbon Copy Podcast special, we meet Elly Toyer of Portsmouth International Port, Kristina Downey of the city council and Clare Seek of Share (Portsmouth). We learn how this coastal city is leading the way in terms of making maritime greener, and we even hear from the local climate choir, who sang as the baton was carried through the port! Listen, to discover the successes and the challenges of climate action in Portsmouth. “I love what community can do to bring people together, to do practical things which help the planet and help each other. I discovered Repair Cafes – the first one was founded in the Netherlands 15 years ago this October – and thought this seems such a good idea, why haven't we got one in Portsmouth? “So I decided to set up a little Facebook group and plugged it on every community group in the city that I knew, and in 24 hours, I had 200 people... Either ones to help or, [people saying] ‘Yes, oh my goodness, I want this because I've got X, Y, and Z and I'd love someone to help me fix it.' “So, you know, I couldn't then not make it happen!” - Clare Seek, Share (Portsmouth) Show Notes Find out more about what's happening across Portsmouth for climate and nature, here: www.carboncopy.eco/local-climate-action/portsmouth Find out about Share (Portsmouth): https://carboncopy.eco/initiatives/share-portsmouth Discover more about the Repair Cafe network: https://www.repaircafe.org/en/ Learn about sustainability at Portsmouth International Port: https://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/services/environmental-health/climate-action/ Find out what Portsmouth City Council is doing to tackle the climate crisis: https://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/services/environmental-health/climate-action/ Read about the huge solar project at Lakeside North Harbour: https://lakesidenorthharbour.com/solar-project/ Read about the Climate Choir Movement: https://climatechoirmovement.org/#about Sign up for a leg of Running Out of Time: https://running-out-of-time.com/route/ Hosted on Acast. It's another show from our archives, today with WBUR reporter Martha Bebinger. You know that broken thing you have sitting in your closet that you just don't have the heart to throw away? It could be a broken lamp, a dead watch or a pair of scissors that's a little dull. Well, chances are there's a helpful neighbor nearby who would love to fix it up for you at one of the region's Repair Cafes. Martha joins The Common with more on the Repair Cafe movement and the folks behind it. Greater Boston's daily podcast where news and culture meet.
The practice of manufacturing for planned obsolescence seems to be what most manufacturers in the present time follow. This means to make an item that will break down sooner than their earlier versions, lack of how-to-fix information or tutorials and even make it impossible to be repaired. The direct impact of such a philosophy increases the bottom line of the business at the cost of increasing e-waste and its impact on our planet. There needs to be a movement from a linear economy in which we take, make and waste to a circular economy. Complete circularity may be hard to achieve in all instances, repairing an item is an alternative that can reduce what ends up in the landfills. “Repair is such a low hanging fruit” says our guest Darren Cotton, Executive Director of The Tool Library. The Tool Library is an all-volunteer nonprofit tool-lending library based on the mantra that cost shouldn't be a barrier to fix up one's home, grow food, or improve the community. Tools can range anywhere from hammers, screwdrivers, and shovels to power drills, circular saws, and sanders. Individuals and businesses can donate tools to the program which will then be circulated throughout the neighborhood for a small annual membership fee. Thus, people looking for an alternative to buying expensive tools that get little use now have this resource at their disposal. In addition, The Tool Library collaborates with the City of Buffalo to host once a month Repair Cafe, where volunteers help individuals repair an item that would have otherwise ended in the landfill. Learn more about this impactful non - profit organization in this episode.#circulareconimy#lineareconomy#mindfulbusinesses#repairability#repaircafe#righttorepair#thetoollibraryhttps://thetoollibrary.org/https://mindfulbusinessespodcast.com/

When we fix what we have, we reduce emissions, and strengthen communities. 80% of the carbon pollution from our laptops, cell phones, and appliances is embodied carbon, emitted before we even open the box. A return to repair means changing our culture and challenging corporate monopoly. We have stories about a repair cafe in Chicago and a coalition of Minnesota techies and farmers who overcame corporate lobbies to win passage of the nation's strongest Right to Repair law. For better of worse, a lot of things we use these days are considered disposable. You rip your shirt - you get a new one. Your toaster isn't working? Replace it. But a "repair cafe" in Corner Brook on Thursday evening will help give your goods a longer life. It works like this you show up with your item, and a volunteer with some expertise will help repair it for free. Samantha Young is with the City of Corner Brook, one of the partners in the Repair Cafe.
WBUR's Martha Bebinger joins The Common with more on the Repair Cafe movement and the folks behind it. Greater Boston's daily podcast where news and culture meet.

Disposable fast fashion is a huge cause of pollution and damage to the environment, but one community benefit society in Manchester has been doing its bit to help for the past decade. Stitched Up! which is now based in Stretford Mall in Greater Manchester has been rescuing unwanted fabric and teaching sewing skills in a bid to help people get more out of their clothes and slow down the damage being done to the planet. The organisation takes donations of unwanted fabric and sells it on to sewists at a discounted rate as well as offering workshops on everything from basic sewing skills, repurposing garments, make do and mend sessions and dressmaking techniques. Their pop up shop in Stretford also hosts a regular Repair Cafe where experts in other fields come along to help people get more life out of their belongings rather than simply throwing them away.I went along to Stitched Up! to meet their events co-ordinator Sarah Revington, she told me all about the organisation's roots and its interesting plans for the future.
