Hi there, Today I am excited to be arts calling Shahab Zargari (bio.site/shahab) and Mo Milan (linktr.ee/momilan) to discuss Shahab's album, AI, and the collaborative process! New Oddities now available here: https://gcrecords.bandcamp.com/album/new-oddities About the New Oddities Album: Shahab Zargari has been sampling and remixing music since the start of his band Kill the Scientist in 1989 when he was still pretty young. The album New Oddities, technically his debut solo album as all past releases were done with band names and monikers, builds upon his years of experience with digital and analog technology. Utilizing artificial intelligence-created music stems, this album looks to the future of the world and humanity and music production, but it also simultaneously looks to the past by utilizing human touches, poems from the 1800s, punk song lyrics from the 80s, 90s choirs newscast samples, and even sonification sounds from the Black Hole in the Perseus galaxy cluster (sounds are from billions of years ago)! The song styles vary from electronic to R&B to digital pop and punk rock, but the futuristic world-building makes it all fit together somehow. “The album uses artificial intelligence as a backing band or studio band. They came in. I tell them what I want, they “jam” and we go back and forth until the foundation of a song materializes,” says Shahab of New Oddities, “we use those on the spot jams as the bare-bones start of a song and then regular old humans put layers upon layers of vocals, samples, instrumentation on top to create a sci-fi trip through the cosmos. Think KLF's Chill Out, but in outer space instead of the American Southwest. About our Guests: Shahab Zargari is an award-winning filmmaker, music lover, author and entrepreneur. Mo Milan is a synthpop artist, composes, and producer from Las Vegas, NV/Dallas, TX. Thank you both so much for taking the time to discuss New Oddities! All the best!! -- Arts Calling is produced by Jaime Alejandro (cruzfolio.com). If you like the show: leave a review, or share it with someone who's starting their creative journey! About our guest: Shahab Zargari is an award-winning filmmaker, music lover, author and entrepreneur. After the success of his film, MY NAME IS ART (2018), in the film festival circuit and inclusion in Amazon Prime's first film festival he began work on what would be his most recent film. This film, entitled OH, THE GUILT (2021) (a nod to a Nirvana song of the same name), is now making its way through the film festival circuit. Currently he creates all of the video output for the UNLV Performing Arts Center, UNLV School of Music, UNLV School of Architecture, UNLV Departments of Film, Dance, Theatre, Art, on top of any freelance directing or editing gig he can get his hands on. Hi everyone. I hope you are doing well wherever you are. As I mentioned previously, I am currently part of the Rogers Art Loft residency in Las Vegas and they have been putting me in touch with the local community and helping me meet people for the podcast. I have been speaking with quite a number of wonderful artists and cultural workers and these conversations will be released throughout the summer and upcoming fall season. For today, I am excited to share with you the first one of these talks as I speak with Shahab Zargari, an Iranian-American filmmaker, record label owner, and musician. Shahab takes me through his journey from working in advertising to making his own independent films and what drives him to tell the stories that he tells. We also talk about the pronunciation of names, Iranian films, Mad Men, and how he got a shoutout from Kevin Smith. Shahab also talks about his latest short film, Oh, the Guilt, which is a coming-of-age story set in the 1990s featuring a Persian-American as the main character. The plot tackles death, loss, and survivor's guilt, elements of the human condition that transcend age, race, and creed. Check it out if you have the chance. Again, this episode was made possible through the Rogers Art Loft residency and I want to thank them for this opportunity. I hope you all enjoy this. Creative Courage is my journey to demystify the idea of the individual and group creative process and discuss creativity as a necessary problem-solving skill. I believe that people need to realize that the creative process is not mutually exclusive and is readily available to anyone willing to use it. My hope is that these chats might give people permission to realize and harness their creative capacity. As we get older, we tend to become discouraged from reaching our full potential because we are afraid to fail or be seen as talentless. Creative Courage fights these demotivating factors and encourages people to harness the creativity they once had as children and use it in their business and personal lives.
