One bowl of shark fin soup can cost hundreds of dollars, but the illegal practice of poaching those fins comes at an even steeper price. More than a hundred million sharks are killed annually. We dive in to find out how this is happening and what's being done to save the sharks.  In this episode:  Josh Rushing (@joshrushing), Senior Correspondent for Al Jazeera's Fault Lines (@AJFaultLines) Episode credits: This episode was produced by Zaina Badr with guest host Kevin Hirten, in for Malika Bilal.

Are shark attacks sensationalised by the media, or do sharks truly have taste for human flesh? Learn the truth with Melissa Márquez, the Mother of Sharks. Sharks have earned a reputation in popular culture for being ‘blood thirsty people eaters' but research and statistics show that this label is misleading. In fact, up to 31 per cent of sharks face extinction, despite the important role they play in our marine ecosystems. With summer upon us and many Australians flocking to the beach, we thought now is the time to revisit one of our favourite episodes to sort out the fact from the fiction. In this episode Tom Robinson and Amelia Searson are joined by former Curtin researcher, marine biologist and conservationist, Melissa Cristina Márquez. Together, they discuss the importance of the sharks in our oceans and the impact that sensationalised media coverage is having on the conservation of these species. Despite fish constituting the largest category of animals used for food (including as farmed animal feed), and despite huge numbers of fish harmed for research, “sport,” and aquaria, their well-being receives very little attention, even from the animal protection community. Fish Feel is an all-volunteer organization primarily serving to help educate the public as to why these animals are deserving of our admiration and appreciation, the immense problems caused by the exploitation of them, and how we can help them. Shark Finning still happens today and is shipped from all over the world to end up in Chinese markets. It's difficult to manage policies in a foreign country, but some countries can manage policies in their own EEZ if they know most of the shark fins are being collected in their waters.  Melissa Marquez wrote an article in Forbes magazine (link below) where a couple of researchers from Florida International University created a DNA test for shark fins to determine where the fins were collected. What the study revealed will have implications in the management of some countries in terms of their shark protection policies.  Listen to the episode to find out the details.  Link to article: https://www.forbes.com/sites/melissacristinamarquez/2020/10/21/scientific-detective-work-tracking-shark-fins-around-the-globe/#13300e8a5e2d Register for the Mindful Conservation Conference:  https://www.absolutelysmashingllc.com/mindful-conference Want To Talk Oceans? The unifying theme of this mish mash of topics is that humans are involved in every aspect of the natural world. If our behaviours become unsustainable and exploitative, this can have catastrophic consequences for species and ecosystems. However, nature has shown time and time again that if given the chance, it can bounce back and recover. We need to give nature that chance before we get to tipping points past which we can no longer reverse the damage we have caused.

** Interview episode 116 ** Francesca Trotman has dedicated her life to preserving the marine life of Mozambique. As a British scholar and marine biologist, Francesca formed a deep connection to the ocean animals in this part of Africa during her university field work and has since planted roots in the country, working with local governments and communities on a number of fronts to help preserve their ocean waters. From setting up marine protected areas to engaging on numerous scientific studies, educating local school children and more, Francesca’s non-profit foundation, Love The Oceans, is her legacy for protecting the ocean in that area of the African continent. Today, we hear her story, filled with inspiration, compassion, and dedication to doing something great for the ocean and another culture outside of her own.  What I love so much about Francesca’a story today is her dedication to helping an emerging country, Mozambique, figure out how to best preserve and protect their wonderfual ocean waters and the animals that live in them. While these waters may be thousands of miles away from most of us, the whales, sharks, mantas, and dolphins know no boundaries and need all the support and protection that we can give them.   Imagine donating a mere $10 to Love The Oceans today and feeling good about helping to protect these species we’re hearing about in Mozambique, giving them a better chance to thrive in the waters around a developing continent and greatly increasing the chance that our own grandchildren will be able to swim with them in the future. Visit LoveTheOceans.org and see the various ways you can contribute. With Earth Day 2020 happening this week, it makes good sense to to get involved... A bill to ban the importation and exportation of shark fins received its second reading in the House last month. Bill S-238 was sponsored by Finn Donnelly, Member of Parliament for Port Moody-Conquitlam in BC. It was passed by the Senate last fall and is up against the clock to be passed before this session of Parliament is over and electioneering begins. Today's rabble radio interview is with two people who have been the driving force behind this bill, making it their personal mission to end shark finning. It's a hopeful yet also a very sad story.  Brian Stewart and Sandra Campbell are continuing the life mission of their son, Rob Stewart, conservationist, activist and film maker. He completed two films which you've probably heard about –  Sharkwater (2006) and Revolution (2012) . These films which busted a lot of myths about sharks which have been promoted by films like Jaws and other pop culture scare stories. He was working on his third film, Sharkwater Revolution, in Florida when he drowned during a dive on January 31, 2017. Brian and Sandra reflect upon their son's legacy and their efforts to continue what Rob started. You can read more about Rob Stewart, his work and his films here, as well as a listing of where you can see the three films.  You can also hear an interview on rabble.ca with Rob about his second film Revolution, dated August 23, 2013 on the Alternatives Podcast.
