Well I hope you're up for a laugh, cos this Take 5 is a special one. As comedy festival season kicks it around Australia, I've dug into the Take 5 archives and pulled out some of my favourite chats with comedians. Unsurprisingly, they're great storytellers. And as we know from almost 20 years of Taking 5, everyone has a connection to music. There's another throughline to these tales too, they all speak to adventure; to shifting to a new place for a new perspective, and often a whole new beginning. You'll hear Celia Pacquola remember her early shows making it big in Edinburgh, Fred Armisen talk about his transition from music to comedy, Rose Matafeo's Rastafarian parents, how Steph Tisdell was gonna be a lawyer before hopping on a plane to the UK, and Simon Amstell's tip into teenage years onstage.Belle & Sebastian – Step Into My Office, BabySleater-Kinney - Start TogetherStormzy – Cigarettes & Cush (Ft. This week I head on a sartorial journey with Broadcaster Miquita Oliver. Growing up in West London and the niece of Neneh Cherry, Miquita was surrounded by the music world …she was recruited at the tender age of 16 to present Channel 4's cult Sunday morning pop culture show, Popworld, with Simon Amstell. In 2022 Miquita and her mother, TV chef and presenter Andi Oliver, featured in a BBC television series The Caribbean with Andi and Miquita. Starting out in Antigua, where they met members of their extended family, reconnected with their Antiguan heritage, and illuminated the island's history and culture…And most recently Andi and Miquita have appeared on Celebrity Gogglebox together.   What drew me to invite Miquita on as a guest is that she has had a lifelong passion for second-hand shopping which has crystallised in recent years into a commitment to buying almost exclusively second-hand … and her stories are both endearing and inspiring…she has an encyclopaedic knowledge of fashion.   I hope you will enjoy our chat as much as I did.

I often wonder who will be the artists of today which we'll look back on and toast to as being truly great. I think to have that status of being an icon, like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, or Aretha Franklin, your music needs to have an enduring sound, and that isn't necessarily tied to popularity of the day. The strange thing for me about someone like Amy Winehouse was that I remember seeing her on T4 running around doing some hilarious mad press thing with SImon Amstell way before Back to Black. And then I watched as she grew up and delivered these songs that just were so distinctive, so moving, so timeless and so cross generational. While there are lots of recent and fascinating documentaries about Amy out there what I really wanted to focus this episode on was how she created and established herself in the first place. She made really great music but there's a lot that goes into that beyond just having a great voice and natural ear so that's what I'm going to be digging into. In today’s episode we’re having a look at Simon Amstell’s 2017 vegan mockumentary Carnage. Set in the year 2067, the film chronicles the events leading up to a utopian future in which animal liberation has been achieved and plant based living has become the norm. We’ll discuss the rise of veganism as depicted in the movie and how it compares to our real world situation, touching on topics such as the devastating effects of intensive farming on the environment and the emergence of deadly zoonotic diseases. Carnage overall is more humorous in tone and less gore-heavy than other vegan documentaries, which we found makes it a more approachable introduction to the subject.

This is a story about birds and fathers. About the things that run in the blood; sanity and madness; captivity and freedom. Charlie Gilmour’s biological father was the poet, anarchist and magician Heathcote Williams, a man who kept a jackdaw in his stately home and vanished from Charlie’s life in the dead of night. Many years later, a young magpie fell into Charlie’s world and, in the midst of darkness, brought a new dawn. Charlie Gilmour lives in South London with his wife, Janina, and their daughter Olga. Matt Knight is a pastor. Or, as he prefers, a pastor*. The asterisk is because, while Matt does officiate weddings and funerals from time to time, his role these days is mostly in HR and admin for a collection of 11 churches and an NGO that tackles multiple projects in Cape Town. Matt and I first met in the Burn, Willowvale, and Unit 11 days of the Durban music scene and would occasionally work together on various projects to try and make things in the city a little bit better in the ways that we knew how. While things have changed a lot for both of us over the last decade, that drive to make the world a better place and our love of music and Simon Amstell has never wavered. The thing that might make this all rather interesting, I guess, is that I'm an atheist yet one of my favourite people is a pastor. Matt has been a good friend to me who even invited me to his wedding but I'm also kinda known as the guy who swore God on Easter Sunday at Splashy. For us, it's never really been an issue, and I've grown a lot since my angry atheist days, so this was a cool opportunity to discuss some big ideas about the universe whilst also getting into the importance of acting locally. Maybe you've never really thought about why someone gets involved in the church, or maybe you have, either way, I think the reality of it all is probably different to what you might expect and I think Matt's perspective will be useful regardless of your personal beliefs. Enjoy. https://almostperfect.co.za/almost-perfect-66-matt-knight/

Simon Amstell is a funny guy. That's literally his job; as comedian, TV host, and recent feature film maker. He got his start as the scathing host of UK TV show Popworld, and made a name further afield when he hosted Never Mind the Buzzcocks in the late noughties. But he's been a stage performer his whole life, and in between whippity quick barbs on set, he's invited audiences into longer and deeper conversations via his stand up. He's known for his sometimes existential, sometimes neurotic, and always highly analytical comedy. It's fair to say, Simon Amstell doesn't take things at face value. That questioning has led him through a life of therapy (in rooms and in public) and when he came to write and direct his first feature film, it spilled over to the big screen. With all of that in mind, I asked Simon Amstell to pick five songs that tell his story. Music that has soundtracked moments of personal narrative, or songs that have helped him understand the world. From anthems to ballads, to charming soundtrack throwbacks, this is a peek into Simon's coming of age. Popworld provocateur-turned-filmmaker, Simon Amstell, joins us on the Curzon Film Podcast this week, to talk about his romantic comedy, Benjamin, but first we get right to the pointe of Lukas Dhont's ballet drama, Girl.Still only in his twenties, Belgian writer-director Lukas Dhont has already made a name for himself with his impressive, tender and controversial debut film. Girl tells the story of Lara (Victor Polster), a determined 15-year-old, committed to becoming a professional ballerina after starting at a new school. Having been born a boy, she faces a world that questions her gender and selfhood, while also also taking on the intense physical demands of a dancer's life. The film has been landed and criticised in near equal measure, the winner of multiple awards, challenged for its treatment of the transgender experience. After Girl, we then sit down with Simon Amstell, once a highly skilled troublemaker, now a talented filmmaker.Amstell's Benjamin is a bittersweet comedy about a rising star filmmaker (that's Benjamin, played by (Colin Morgan) who is thrown into emotional turmoil on the brink of premiering his second film, when Billie, his hard partying publicist, introduces him to a mesmeric French musician called Noah. Set among the back streets of East and North London - and partly filmed in our very own Curzon Soho - the film boasts original music from James Righton of the Klaxons and great performances from its young cast including Colin Morgan, Phénix Brossard, Joel Fry, Jack Rowan and Jessica Raine.Discussing the films this week are Sam Howlett, Jake Cunningham, Ella Kemp and Caitlin Quinlan.Follow the team on Social Media:@jakehcunningham - Jake@efe_kemp - Ella@SamHowlett_1 - Sam@csaquinlan - CaitlinProduced by Jake CunninghamEdited by Mark Towers Hosted on Acast. The new episode of How Was Your Week begins with gratitude and progresses, ideally, with generosity! Consider it a gift, because we are so appreciative that the #TipSpoony campaign was such a success. Thank you, seriously, so much. First on the show is British comedian and star of Grandma's House SIMON AMSTELL, who's in New York doing his one-person show, Numb, and has things to tell us about cats, Peru, apples, thoughts and feelings. Also, he went on The View this week and has stories about what that was like! Simon is brilliant and you must see his show if you can. Our second guest is BOBCAT GOLDTHWAIT, who is simply wonderful. He has lots to say about his new film, God Bless America, what his mom used to say about homely people in church, what it was like having a dad who did magic tricks, what the Merchant Ivory guys had to say about making a film look more expensive, whether Save the Cat's theory of making characters suffer is a bit much, and how he would rewrite Shakes the Clown if he were to make it today. Also: how to turn into a cat, why hookers have to work harder now, how Hoop Dreams could have been better, whether I'm more like a tomato or the stuff in a oven that can only be cleaned with dangerous poisons, how money matters can be like surprise obesity, and the difference between Ruby and Rudy, both of which are, apparently, movies. This is a great show, and we made it just for you.
