An incredible song with an absolutely ridiculous video, "The Warrior" is pure guilt-free pleasure. Besides discussing the history of the band, the song, and the video, we also explore Knuckles from Sonic The Hedgehog and its significance in Bill's life. And most importantly, we examine what it means to be a warrior in the world of love. Foreigner guitarist Bruce Watson was having a better hair day, finished his crisp white shirt with a black jacket (I'd intended to do in kind with mine, but I was rushing and couldn't get my cuffs through my sleeves), and surrounded himself with cool guitars and warm lights. Rockstar! I dig the cut of his jib. Almost as much as I appreciate how accessible, down-to-earth, humble, and lovely he is. Not a likely combination, but oh, so charming. And entertaining! What a great storyteller! Bruce took us through his extraordinary ancestry. The Watsons have been Valley Boys since the 1600s. Not! But they have been in America since then, in LA since the 1890s or so… likewise, his mother's people, from Cork. Great story there - how and why they got here. We got the skinny on where the passion started - The Monkees - Hey Micky - and Creedance- the dream - to be a rockstar - his first band, Eragon, that no one, including me, could say correctly, covering The Eagles and Zeppelin - hysterical day jobs, great stories there, his first big gig touring with Toto's Bobby Kimball, then Patty Smyth with Rod Stewart, then Rod hisself. Bruce, although not a “reader,” was getting lots of session work for film, TV, and commercials, one of which was producing a spot with B.B. King- what a poignant, moving story. Recording with a very young Christina Aguilera, her break out, What a Girl Wants, and just out of the box, Sara Bareilles' Love Song, through Bennett Salvay meeting composer W.G. Snuffy Walden, and giving them just what they needed for their Friday Night Lights, getting the call to fill in for an ill Mick Jones - a temp gig - Bruce was busy, enjoying session work, his home and his family, with no intention of touring - then getting extended… again and again… finally joining Mick and becoming a permanent member of Foreigner. The Rockstar young Bruce dreamt of being realized in full force and boy does he wear it well. A killer player, he's got the hair, the moves, and the clothes, and I got him to tell us where he shops. I wanna hit the stores with him. It's all about how he puts it together. Bruce Watson is all that… and a jumbo bag of Cheetos. Talent, looks, genuine sweetness, and fun. Rockers, please take note… you can reach the pinnacle, look amazing doing it, and still be a mensch. Be like Bruce! The tennis icon weighs in on the Pickleball craze (spoiler: he is not a fan), recalls the time David Bowie shaded his guitar skills (even after lessons from Eddie Van Halen!) and reflects on his long journey from sports bad boy to good family man — thanks to some help from his wife, rock star Patty Smyth. But don't worry, Mac still has some of his famous fire! Though he'd be fine never hearing his infamous “You cannot be serious” catchphrase ever again, he explains how his anger made him a better player — until it didn't. It's our 300th episode! And Dan sits down with Philly music legend David Uosikkinen, drummer for The Hooters, founder of In the Pocket, and countless other projects. Dave talks about growing up in Levittown, seeing Buddy Rich as a kid, his first drum sets, South Street and the scene in the late 70s and early 80s, and how a one-time session with Eric Bazillian and Rob Hyman in 1980 turned into a 40+ year career (and still going) as The Hooters. Dan and David discuss some of the great Philadelphia musicians that Dave has worked with (In the Pocket is a huge "who's-who"), folk like Pete Donnely, Charlie Ingui and his late brother Richie of Soul Survivors, Patty Smyth, and more. It's a non-stop ride, and David's enthusiasm and energy for playing music seems in no way to have slowed with age. Thanks to all the listeners and supporters for helping us get to 300 episodes!
On this episode, take a tour with us - to the early 80's - to Scandal, as we drop into the short history of the band that released an EP that was a scattering blast of five songs - including “Goodbye To You” and “Love Has Got A Line”. At the time, it was the best-selling EP in the history of Columbia Records. But did I ever really listen to, back in 1982 or 84 or 87 or whenever, all the five songs? Maybe. Around this time, in 1982, Pat Benatar was coming towards the end of her best run. Scandal had that vibe - rock and roll crunch with a new wave-ish bite. Early 80's production and the couple hits were all about the chorus making your hips move and your head nod. Scandal threw five variations of their sound out there to see what's stuck. And did it with 80's killer keyboard playing, guitars-and-drums of the time, and a powerhouse singer out front. Patty Smyth went solo in 1987 with her debut album. The first of two hits on it, "Never Enough" (the album's title track), was written by The Hooters' Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian (there are a surprising amount of Hooters connections to other artist's music of the era). Rick Chertoff, who produced both The Hooters and Cyndi Lauper's debut megasmash album is involved too. Baby Grand, a pre-Hooters lineup, recorded an earlier version of "Never Enough". Smyth said the album "was never supposed to be a solo record; it was meant to be a record by 'Scandal Featuring Patty Smyth'.” So we listen to the EP. Let's dig into “The Warrior” album, and hear some of what we like - and don't so much - with Smyth's solo records. Still, at the essence of it all is a great rock and roll voice, some drops of rock and pop candy, and a whole bunch more to like than what was heard just on the radio. *** Read Rob's current and archived writing at rockforwardmusic.com WEBSITE: rockpopandroll.com EMAIL: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts Spotify Stitcher Google Podcasts

In this episode, we go back to the gold mine of 1984 to revisit the iconic anthem "The Warrior", by Scandal, featuring Patty Smyth (not to be confused with Patti Smith!). Blaine shares another torture device, and we introduce a new segment called Cover Your Ears, where we scour YouTube to feature a funny, terrible or awesome cover version of our chosen song. This particular one involves a hilarious moment of Perilus/Perilous that's quite possibly the first time that's ever happened. Our movie this time is the bubble gum-chewing, ass-kicking 1988 cult sci-fi action classic, "They Live", starring former WWF professional wrestler Roddy Piper in his first (and we're going to go ahead and say his best) movie role. The conversation is sparked by this Orwellian movie's bizarre dialogue, bleak outlook, and epically weird extended fight scene between two friends. Enjoy the ride, and don't forget your bubble gum. “Love Is a Battlefield,” “Invincible,” “The Warrior,” “Better Be Good to Me,” “The Best” are songs, that if you were young, and living through “heartache to heartache,” during the ‘80s—or even if you weren't born until decades later—chances are you know the words to every song written by the Hall of Fame songstress Holly Knight. In her book, “I AM THE WARRIOR: My Crazy Life Writing the Hits and Rocking the MTV Eighties” she offers a very juicy and provocative backdrop of her creative process of bringing her chart topping, mega-hits to life through the timeless vocals of Tina Turner, Pat Benatar, Patty Smyth, Rod Stewart, John Waite, Cheap Trick, Heart, KISS and the list just keeps going and going. HOLLY KNIGHT's songs have appeared in movies from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Thelma and Louise, Thirteen Going on Thirty, and one of my favorite movies, Dallas Buyers Club, and have been licensed for popular TV shows, including Schitt's Creek, Stranger Things, Saturday Night Live, and South Park. By now, you should get the picture that her songs have been in your ears for the last 40 years. In 2013, Holly was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. At the time only one of 16 women to have that honor. Ladies and gentlemen it's time to welcome the ICON, the LEGEND, the QUEEN of SONGWRITING, THE MISTRESS OF THE MELODY, the incomparable Holly Knight!

Jonelle Mosser has worked with some of the most amazing talent in the music business. Industry veterans such as B.B. King, Trisha Yearwood, Etta James, Wynonna Judd, Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, Waylon Jennings, Patty Smyth, AJ Croce, Levon Helm and Bruce Cockburn, have shared the stage or the studio with her. Jonelle has also worked on numerous solo projects over the span of her career, beginning in 1996 with her compilation album of Texas singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, whom she first met in 1978. That debut album was a 1996 compilation of Townes covers called "Around Townes”. That particular project brought her to the attention of Bonnie Raitt producer Don Was. Don was so supportive that he soon put a band together with Jonell as lead singer. He rounded up A-listers such as guitarist Mark Goldenberg from Jackson Browne's band, keyboardist Benmont Tench from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, and Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. They recorded 7 songs and were named the New Maroons. They played Farm Aid in Ames IA, but the recordings were shelved because other projects took precedence. Jonelle did go on to record a rendition of the Supremes' "Stop in the Name of Love”, which later landed on the soundtrack to the 1998 film "Hope Floats”, starring Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr. She's currently working on new projects, hoping to release them in 2023. www.jonellemosser.com The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. On Episode 120 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis interviews the legendary JESSE HARMS! Jesse is an American musician and songwriter who was the keyboardist and background vocalist for Sammy Hagar on his Three Lock Box Tour, as well as on his 1984 album, VOA, and the tour supporting that record. Interestingly, when Sammy joined Van Halen in 1985, Jesse found himself working briefly for the previous VH lead singer David Lee Roth in 1986; in fact, he provides keyboards on one of Roth's biggest hits, “Goin' Crazy”. Famously, Jesse also wrote the hit song “Walk on Water”, which was recorded by Eddie Money. He also toured with Eddie, and wrote and toured with REO Speedwagon as well. The list goes on and on as it pertains to the artists with whom Jesse has worked… Bad English, Guitar Shorty, Patty Smyth, and the McAuley Schenker Group to name just a few. In 2005 Harms purchased Marin Music Center in Novato, California which he operated until he sold it in 2019. Jesse recently released a 6CD set named ALL SIDES. This is a deep dive into Jesse's writing career, including 3 discs of material featuring his own lead vocals, plus 3 discs of collaborative work with an array of well-known voices in the music industry; including Sammy Hagar, Kevin Cronin, Robin McAuley, John Waite and Gina Schock. Curtis and Jesse talk about all of this in their hour and a half discussion. You're going to enjoy this trip down musical memory lane; especially if you're a Sammy Hagar and/or David Lee Roth fan. It's chock full of great information; some of which you'll probably only hear right here on RetroZest! Jesse Harms began writing songs in 1989 with REO Speedwagon vocalist Kevin Cronin who had been exploring some creative projects outside of the group. The chemistry between the pair was good and Harms was invited to join REO Speedwagon. Harms joins Jeff and Matt to discuss his experiences working on REO's 1990 album, The Earth, a Small Man, His Dog and a Chicken -- as well as the subsequent tour. He also shares some initial details regarding All Sides, the new six disc box set from Melodicrock Classics that collects decades of his songwriting, including previously unreleased songs with Sammy Hagar, John Waite, Patty Smyth and others.Hear two songs from the new box set here and stay tuned for pre-order details.Read more about Jesse's extensive career as an artist, songwriter and producer here.If you enjoy these episodes, we'd love to have you join our Patreon and become a Record Club member. Kirsty Young's castaway is the tennis player and commentator, John McEnroe. He won three singles and five doubles Wimbledon titles, four singles and four doubles at the US Open and was ranked number one in the world for four consecutive years in the 1980s. John McEnroe grew up in New York and didn't pick up a tennis racquet until the age of eight, but his talent was quickly spotted and he began to compete in junior tournaments. In 1977, aged 18 and between high school and university, he qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon and reached the semi-finals where he lost to Jimmy Connors. By the end of the tournament his on-court behaviour - shouting, haranguing umpires and abusing his racquet - earned him the nickname 'Superbrat'.He made his first Wimbledon final against Bjorn Borg in 1980. In one of the finest matches in history, despite winning a tiebreak 18-16 to win the fourth set, he lost the match. He beat Borg the following year to win his first Wimbledon singles title. 1984 was the best year in John's career: he won 82 out of 85 matches he played, but it was also the year when he was beaten at the French Open by Ivan Lendl, who replaced him as number one.John married the actress Tatum O'Neal in 1986. They divorced in the mid-1990s and he has been married to the singer Patty Smyth since 1997. Since retiring in 1992, in addition to his role as tennis commentator, he has been a coach and runs his own tennis academy. He still plays in tennis tournaments.Producer: Cathy Drysdale.
