Episode #104: Jill Smokler is the creator of Scary Mommy, one of the most original and successful mom blogs ever. She was also the first mom blogger to sell her site to a major media company. But Dear Nina is not a business podcast, and this is not a discussion about business regrets or rebranding. Jill was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. And since Jill is also my real-life friend from college, this episode is personal. Jill and I had a candid conversation about her diagnosis, her decision to step away from her post-Scary Mommy work, and the ways friendship and community have become so important in this part of her life. Jill also had specific advice for anyone with a friend who is diagnosed with cancer---what is most helpful, what is least helpful, and everything in between. For ten years, Jill was the face of her brand, Scary Mommy, an online platform for parents all over the country to share their stories and advice on parenting. While Scary Mommy brought Jill a lot of happiness and success, there came a time when she felt overwhelmed and unhappy. While Jill never imagined leaving Scary Mommy, this decision ultimately ended up being the best choice for her well-being. Through this experience, Jill has been able to develop the next steps of her life and encourage others to do the same. You can catch her next chapter through her podcast: She's Got Issues. Quotes • “Once I saw that it could become something beyond a mommy blog, I made it my mission to make that happen.” (08:57-09:05) • “I really thought I knew everything about Scary Mommy's needs and how to develop it to the next level, but I didn't. I should have talked to other founders and entrepreneurs who have been there before because we learn these lessons.” (14:45-15:00) • “When someone wants to buy you, you're the one in demand.” (16:33-16:37) • “You are absolutely the person who knows the most about your brand, but you know nothing about how to sell it and how that process works. One does not equal the other. Put your pride aside and be humble that you can't do it all.” (17:49-18:13) • “I was given the choice of coming up with a role I wanted to play or leaving the company. I racked my brain and couldn't think of anything else I wanted to contribute to the company. I realized that I'd had enough and that was a great feeling.” (29:30-29:49) • “Really look into your domain and your social media handles. I've many times thought of great names I want to use only to look up the Twitter and Instagram handle to see it's being used for something that's totally different that you don't want to be associated with.” (40:30-40:46) • “I told myself if it wasn't fun, that I had to walk away.” (41:10-41:13) Connect with Jill Smokler: Instagram | http://www.instagram.com/jillsmokler Website | https://www.shesgotissues.com/ Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe. In 2017, Alicia Smokler was featured on Million Dollar Matchmaker, a reality TV show hosted by relationship expert Patti Stanger, who's goal is to help wealthy celebrity clients find love. Through Patti's advice, Alicia was selected out of several other girls by the millionaire to go on a one-on-one date.  Though it was a nice date and Alicia made a good friend out of the experience, it wasn't love, and so she's been on a journey of being single after 30 ever since. She has so many dating stories and positive lessons learned from bad dating experiences that she has now set out to write a book for women in their 30's and 40's who are trying to find love. Alicia also has a blog about her dating experiences, as well as dating tips and resources. In today’s episode, Scary Mommy founder Jill Smokler discusses coming to terms with her husband Jeff’s sexuality, how isolated she felt when she first learned of his same sex attraction, making the difficult decision to get a divorce after 18 years of marriage, and how they focused on honesty and transparency in telling their three children. She spoke about how painful it was to break the news to the kids that she and her husband would be divorcing. “We tried to focus on how much we loved them and how intact we could be, even when we weren’t living together. It’s so hard when you see your children in any sort of pain, and to feel like you are the cause of it, and that there’s really no way you can comfort them, there are no answers, they are going to be hurt by this…it’s devastating, it’s so hard to see. That said I think this whole experience has really helped them become more sensitive to other people, more empathetic, just understanding of struggles that everybody goes through.”

From the fictional towns of Hill Valley, CA, and Shermer, IL, to the beautiful landscapes of the “Goondocks” in Astoria and the “ time of your life” dirty dancing resort still alive and well in Lake Lure, NC, ‘80s teen movies left their mark not just on movie screen and in the hearts of fans, but on the landscape of America itself. Like few other eras in movie history, the ‘80s teen movies has endured and gotten better with time . In Brat Pack America, Kevin Smokler gives virtual tours of the legendary movies from that time and why the places they happened are a tribute to their permanence, why we love them still. Including interviews with actors, writers, and directors of the era, and a Trapper Keeper- full of interesting facts about your favorite 80s movies, Brat Pack America is a must for any fan of the Breakfast Club and Back to the Future, of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty in Pink and Dead Poets Society. Smokler went to Goonies Day in Astoria, OR, took a Lost Boys tour of Santa Cruz, CA and in the present visited retro arcades, mov- ie theaters and record stores. His exploration of highways and main streets of “Brat Pack America” remind of why we love the teen movies of the 1980s so much and, three decades later, still do. Kevin Smokler (@weegee) is the author of the essay collection "Practical Classics: 50 Reasons to Reread 50 Books you Haven't Touched Since High School" (Prometheus Books, Feb. 2013) which The Atlantic Wire called "truly enjoyable" and the editor of "Bookmark Now: Writing in Unreaderly Times," A San Francisco Chronicle Notable Book of 2005. His work has appeared in the LA Times, Fast Company, BuzzFeed, Vulture, The San Francisco Chronicle, Publishers Weekly and on National Public Radio. In 2013, he was BookRiot's first ever Writer in Residence. - See more at: http://www.kevinsmokler. com/ Praise for Practical Classics “In this engaging survey of 50 books commonly assigned to teen readers, [Smokler] advocates revisiting them from an adult perspective. Even books we loved in our formative years… may have sailed right over our heads, suggests the author, who argues that only time and experience can prepare us to appreciate them fully.” —San Jose Mercury News “[F]ull of wit and candor... Putting literature to practical use is not a new invention, but what’s refreshing about the practice in this light is how Smokler pits this sort of practical gifting-as-guidance against the reduction of literature to ‘a letter grade and a dusty old obligation.’” —Fiction Writers Review “[S]o much fun…[It] offers a truly enjoyable trip down one’s personal memory lane of books. It’s also a love letter to the act of reading, to continual learning, and to making an effort to slow down and savor the good books in life.” —The Atlantic Wire “If you have been thinking about revisiting the books of your youth or those you have promised yourself to read, but haven’t, this entertaining book provides practical, real-world reasons by you should read them.” -Alan Caruba, Bookviews “[A] fine guide for any adult reader who would return to the classics with a different perspective in mind.” -The Bookwatch “In the short and beguilingly engaging essays that make up Practical Classics, Smokler shows how these works can be relevant and even useful to grownups. Most impressively, he manages to pull this off without sounding stuffy or self-important.” -The Rumpus “Possibly the first self-help book to use literature as its prescription, Practical Classics serves as a primer for personal development, demonstrating how one may apply various literary tinctures to the more trouble- some areas of the Human Condition.... [Smokler] holds forth with confidence and a good slathering of wit about coping with our common, human plight.” -Austin Chronicle
