fWotD Episode 2826: Dominik Hašek Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 29 January 2025 is Dominik Hašek.Dominik Hašek (Czech pronunciation: [ˈdomɪnɪk ˈɦaʃɛk], ; born January 29, 1965) is a Czech former ice hockey goaltender who mostly played for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). Widely regarded as one of the best goaltenders of all time, Hašek also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and Ottawa Senators in his 16-season National Hockey League (NHL) career before finishing his career in Europe. While in Buffalo, he became one of the league's finest goaltenders, earning him the nickname "The Dominator". His strong play has been credited with establishing European goaltenders in a league previously dominated by North Americans. He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, both with the Red Wings, winning his first one as the starting goaltender, and his second one as the backup goaltender.Hašek was one of the league's most successful goaltenders of the 1990s and early 2000s. From 1993 to 2001, he won six Vezina Trophies, the most under the award's current system of voting for the best individual goaltender. In 1998 he won his second consecutive Hart Memorial Trophy, becoming the first goaltender to win the award multiple times. During the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, he led the Czech national ice hockey team to its first and only Olympic gold medal. The feat made him a popular figure in his home country and prompted hockey legend Wayne Gretzky to call him "the best player in the game". While with the Red Wings in 2002, Hašek became the first European-trained starting goaltender to win the Stanley Cup. In the process, he set a record for shutouts in a postseason year.Hašek was considered an unorthodox goaltender, with a distinct style that labeled him a "flopper". He was best known for his concentration, foot speed, flexibility, and unconventional saves, such as covering the puck with his blocker rather than his trapper. Hašek holds the highest career save percentage of all time (0.9223) and is seventh in goals against average (first in the modern era) (2.202), and the third-highest single-season save percentage (0.9366 in 1998–99). The record was broken by Tim Thomas in the 2010–11 season and again in the 2011–12 season by Brian Elliott, who now holds the record at .940. Hašek is the only goalie to face the most shots per 60 minutes and have the highest save percentage in one season. He did it twice while with the Sabres (1996 and 1998).At the time of his retirement, he was the oldest active goaltender in the NHL at 43, and the second-oldest active player in the league after Red Wings teammate Chris Chelios, who was 46. Hašek announced his retirement on June 9, 2008, but on April 21, 2009, he announced a comeback to professional hockey and signed a contract with HC Pardubice of the Czech Extraliga. On June 7, 2010, he signed with Spartak Moscow of the KHL and played the last season of his career with this team. Hašek announced his retirement on October 9, 2012. Hašek was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 17, 2014. He is also a member of the Czech Ice Hockey Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame. His number was retired by the Buffalo Sabres (2015) and HC Pardubice (2013). In 2017, he was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Wednesday, 29 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Dominik Hašek on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kimberly.

The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Our Great Coach on this episode is basketball coach, and former All-American point guard Pokey Chatman. Pokey started her coaching career as a student assistant in 1991 while finishing her degree at Louisiana state university. She then became an assistant coach, before becoming the teams head coach in 2004. As a head coach she had an immediate impact leading the team to 3 consecutive NCAA final fours. In 2007 she moved to Russia to coach Spartak Moscow, and in 2010 led them to the Euroleague title. In 2010 she moved back to the USA to coach the Chicago Sky in the WNBA, taking the team into the playoffs for the first time in their history. She then went on to coach the Indiana Fever. She has also coached the Slovakian National team, been an assistant for USA teams and won numerous coach of the year awards., including the Black Coaches Association's Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005. Pokey is a coach who epitomizes resilience. Her story is marked by second chances and the hard work needed to rise above the challenges you face. She is humble and yet determined, and believes that you should never let your ego get in the way of what the moment needs. The key parts of this interview that I reflected on afterwards were Her view that Great coaches are authentic leaders who are able to create, cultivate, maintain, and manage relationships in an emotionally intelligent way. Her advice on improving your team tomorrow by ensuring the that everyone on the organisation has a personal development plan and that the staff commit 20 minutes everyday to helping individuals with this plan. The power of asking questions of both yourself and the player in a bid to improve. I loved this conversation with Pokey, it left me feeling grateful and mindful of my own humility. I hope you enjoy it as much as Jim and I did. If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at thegreatcoachespodcast@gmail.com You can also follow us and comment on all our Great Coaches here Twitter @CoachesGreat Facebook @TheGreatCoaches Instagram @the_great_coaches_podcast YouTube The Great Coaches Podcast LinkedIn The Great Coaches Podcast

David discussed the Russian Football watching community from across the world that follows the club religiously. Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Kokorin is a player he feels deserves a bit more praise for his time at the club. And Andrei Mostovoy is a young player he's looking to see more of. I asked him what made him pick Leyton Orient after being disillusioned with West Ham. David's also got a podcast called The Retro Wet Shaving Podcast with the @dyspraxicshaver  We went on to discuss Dyspraxia, a coordination disorder that David was diagnosed with last year, because of which he can is unable to drive.  He talked to me about his collecting of Kit and programs, once of which is from the 1970's when Zenit played his hometown team of Southend United.  Do listen to Dave's wonderful response when I ask him what following the club has brought to his life.

West Ham are still in the Europa League group stage! It's not a dream. And that was proved by Friday's draw when the Hammers were picked to play against Dinamo Zagreb, Genk and Rapid Vienna. It's an exciting time to be a West Ham fan and even Saturday's slightly disappointing 2-2 home draw with Crystal Palace couldn't put a dent in most Hammers' positive vibes. So imagine how they felt when the club actually made three signings in the last week of the transfer window! Kurt Zouma arrived from Chelsea, Nikola Vlasic from CSKA Moscow and Alex Kral from Spartak Moscow. Still no striker but all in all, it was a solid enough window and with Irons fans' expectations on the floor in recent times, there seemed a pretty buoyant mood among the fanbase after Tuesday's deadline. Will Pugh is joined by James Jones and Reece Bayliss to discuss all of that and more. There's Palace reaction, Betway charity bets, West Ham Women with the Daily Mail's Kathryn Batte, a quiz and plenty beyond. Thanks so much for listening! This is an audio version of our YouTube video. Champions League betting tips and predictions for the 2021/22 season from Oddspedia. We've got the best betting picks and insight ahead of the Third Round Qualifiers (second leg) in the Champions League this week. We start our Champions League betting preview with FC Sheriff's home game against Red Star Belgrade with the tie level at 1-1 following the first leg draw in Serbia. Slavia Prague impressed many people last season during their Europa League campaign and they were looking to go one step further and qualify for the Champions League this year. However, their route to Europe's premier continental club competition could soon be ended following their 2-0 defeat to Hungarian side Ferencvaros last time out. One of the best games in this run of fixtures is Shakhtar Donetsk against Genk. This, on paper, could be a Champions League group stage clash, but only one of them will be progressing to the next stage. It's currently 2-1 to Shakhtar on aggregate. Two other good games; Sparta Prague travel to the French principality of Monaco, and Danish side FC Midtjylland host Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven who are in red hot form. Elsewhere, Bulgarian side Ludogorets have the chance to reach the playoffs of the Champions League following their 1-1 first leg draw against Greek heavyweights Olympiakos. Swiss side Young Boys welcome Romanian outfits Cluj in their second-leg tie with the game level at one goal each following their away trip last week. The Super League side are overwhelming favourites to win and qualify for the next stage. There's just three other games to look at starting with Portuguese side Benfica taking on Russian club Spartak Moscow in a clash that wouldn't look out of place in the Champions League group stage. Legia Warsaw against Dinamo Zagreb will be a game full of tension and a superb atmosphere between these hot-headed and lively fanbases. This game - like so many others - ended 1-1 after the first leg, so there's still lots to play for, especially with the demise of the away goals rule. The final game that we're looking at on this Champions League betting show is Rangers' game against Swedish side Malmo. This is potentially Steven Gerrard's most important game of his managerial career so far! Eduardo Siles is very well supported by the one-and-only Daniele Fisichella, a diligent and brilliant European football expert. They're here to discuss all things Champions League in this week's Odds On episode.
