Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

June 4 second from 14:33 till the end As we've seen in previous installments, the recitation of the Ketoret is especially valuable, and offers a person great blessings and benefits. However, this is true only if the person recites the text slowly and with Kavana (concentration), understanding the words he utters. As such, it behooves us to try to understand this difficult text to whatever extent we can. The portion from the Talmud which we recite begins by listing the eleven ingredients of the Ketoret, and their relative amounts in the mixture. We read that the Ketoret consisted of a total of 368 portions ("Maneh"), and that 365 of these were offered over the course of the 365 days of the solar calendar – half a portion each morning, and half a portion each afternoon. The remaining three portions were used for the Kohen Gadol's special Ketoret offering inside the Kodesh Ha'kodashim (inner sanctum of the Bet Ha'mikdash) on Yom Kippur. The Gemara teaches us that these three portions were returned on Ereb Yom Kippur to the "Machteshet" – the mortar – to be ground extra-fine. Whereas the Torah requires that the ordinary, daily Ketoret be prepared "Daka" – finely-ground – the Ketoret brought in the Kodesh Ha'kodashim on Yom Kippur needed to be "Daka Min Ha'daka" – especially fine, and so these three portions were ground a second time on Ereb Yom Kippur, in preparation for the Yom Kippur service. The first four of the eleven spices listed by the Gemara are Sori, Siporen, Helbena and Lebona, which (as mentioned in our previous installment) are the four spices named by the Torah (Shemot 30:34). As the Gemara teaches, Sori is "Seraf Ha'notef Me'aseh Ha'ketaf" – "sap that drips from the balsam tree." This is the "Nataf" mentioned by the Torah, referring to its "dripping" ("Notef") from the tree. The Siporen – onycha – is called "Shehelet" in the Torah. The third and fourth spices are Helbena – galbanum – and Lebona – frankincense – which are listed by these names also in the Torah. The next five spices are Mor – myrrh; Kesia – cassia; Shibolet Nerd – spikenard; Karkom – saffron; and Kost – costus. There's a great deal of discission as to the correct text for this ninth spice. In many editions, this word appears as "Ha'kosht." The definitive article "Ha" ("the") seems difficult to justify, because this article is used only in reference to the first four spices ("Ha'sori Ve'ha'siporen Ve'halbena Ve'ha'lebona"). As we explained in a previous installment, the prefix "Ha" appears in reference to these four because these four are explicitly named by the Torah itself. All the others, however – including Kosht – are not named by the Torah, and so the prefix "Ha" seems inappropriate in this context. This point was made by Rav Meir Mazuz (1945-2025), who added that the word "Kosht" itself is incorrect. The correct pronunciation, he wrote, is "Kost" – meaning, with the letter Sin as opposed to the letter Shin. Rav Mazuz explained that "Kosht" resembles the Aramaic word "Keshot," which means "true" (as we say in the Berich Shemeh prayer: "De'Hu Elaka Keshot Ve'Orayteh Keshot…") and is not the name of a spice. Therefore, although in many Siddurim the word is written "Ha'kosht," it should be pronounced "Kost."

The British had instigated a war in the Transvaal which fired off in early 1881, but they had already ignited another flashpoint - in Basutoland. This was a fascinating conflict, and it has modern overtones. For the new British government of Sir William Gladstone, the fact they had stimulated a simultaneous slew of conflicts in South Africa was more than irksome, it was expensive and ill-timed. While Britain was dealing with a humiliating setback against the Boers, it was struggling to enforce authority in Basutoland—highlighting how imperial control was both stretched and inconsistent in southern Africa. Following Basutoland's transformation into a British dominion on 12 March 1868, it became the target of rapid westernization efforts by the Cape Colony administration. By 1879, the Cape Parliament had extended the Peace Preservation Act to Basutoland, with the aim of disarming the people of the territory. This did not go down well. Guns, like horses, were of immense significance in Basotho society. Most Basotho who worked on the Kimberley Diamond fields bought both muskets, and later rifles, as well as Boer ponies and other horses before making their way home. What was going on in the minds of the Cape Colony, and those in the imperial colonial office? It is important for our story to understand global events of the time. For decades all of the European governments concerned with the coast of Africa, both east and west, had tacitly agreed not to allow the quarrels of their respective traders and officials to become occasions for empire. That was the theory. The ministries in Paris and London wanted nothing more than to continue their gentleman's agreement, although each suspected the other of wanting to break it. Napoleon the third had nourished a few sporadic projects for African expansion, but the catastrophe of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 had slowed them down. The French Third Republic pulled out of the Ivory Coast and was considering renouncing all options in Dahomey. It wanted to leave Gabon as well as the Congo. But Senegal was another matter. The French colonial government in Daka had developed a local expansive programme derived mainly from the French army's influence rather than pure economics. There were plans to build a major railway line to the upper Niger River which would link Senegal to Niger. The French rulers of Senegal were expanding eastwards as well as southwards, and had begun to encircle Gambia. All of these moves in Africa must be recognized as part of our story here in South Africa. Globally speaking, the main British nightmare was the Russian advance towards the Dardanelles, Turkey, Persia, India and China. So the British maintained a navy allied with Turkish armies in the near east to protect the Indian route through the Suez against the Russians. London allied with the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II who ruled greater Turkey and his subordinate Khedive Ismail of Egypt. They were being schmoozed as reliable vassals who served Britain's financial and imperial interests. Britain could avoid seizing territory directly which would be expensive and politically ruinous. No boots on the ground, just deploy the one-step away approach via their the navy it was thought. The Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid ii however had been borrowing heavily from the English and even more from the French, while his revenues fell short of expenditure, and debt mounted so he raised land tax. Christians in Bosnia and Herzogovina revolted against Turkish rule, more loans defaulted, and the Sultan, and therefore the Turkish Ottomans, went bankrupt. With that as the backdrop, let's return to the Basutoland Gun War. Tension had been growing for many years between the Basuto and the British. The southern corner of Basutoland was settled by the Baphuthi led by chief Moorosi who had been a tributary ruler of Moshoeshoe. In 1869 he had agreed, somewhat reluctantly, to merge his territory with British Basutoland.

In a far-off galaxy, dark and wide, Lived a space hydra—scaly with pride. Nine heads, each a dazzling hue, But the stars shunned it; the planets did, too. Hydra roamed, alone and cold, With tales of terror that planets told. “It's a beast,” they cried, “a menace, a curse! Its nine heads of venom will make things worse!” But Hydra was gentle, not savage or mean, Just caught in a tale so dark and unclean. “Please,” it pleaded to each passing star, “I only want peace—no battles, no scar.” Through the asteroid fields, it slithered in dread, Trying to heal the wounds left unsaid. On Planet Zara, it made its first plea: “Oh, mighty ones, won't you listen to me?” The people of Zara looked down with a glare, “You've caused too much fear; no peace do we share.” But Hydra, with courage, did not shy away; It sang of harmony, a future of day. “War is a shadow that eats at the soul. In friendship, we're healed; in peace, we're whole. My heads may be many, my scales may gleam, But in my heart is a hopeful dream.” Planets soon gathered to hear Hydra's song— Those it had frightened for so, so long. From the moons of Daka to the orbs of Zeet, All stood still in the glow of its heat. It spoke of stardust that binds every race, Of galaxies endless and boundless space. “Why fight,” it asked, “when skies can unite, In darkness, we find each other's light?” A hush swept the cosmos; a silence so deep. The stars held their breath, as if falling asleep. Then one planet called out, gentle and small, “Hydra, forgive us. We misjudged it all.” One by one, others joined in the cheer, Casting aside the shadows of fear. The galaxy sparkled, a new dawn of grace— Bound by a hydra who found its place. No longer hated, no longer alone, Hydra had made the galaxy its own. With nine heads lifted, it soared through the stars, A symbol of peace in worlds near and far. Hosted on Acast. WHAT MAKES AN ARTIST?, 10min., Lebanon Directed by Raafat Abou Daka “What Makes an Artist” is an introspective documentary that delves into the lives of the internationally renowned sculptor brothers Assaf, exploring the unexpected paths that led them to their craft. The film peels back the layers of their fame to reveal the human side of their journey, offering a rare glimpse into their early struggles and the alternate careers they nearly pursued. Get to know the filmmaker: What motivated you to make this film? The idea that people always strive to create something special and achieve a goal. Whether an artist or a doctor, everyone wants to stand out and prove themselves, often to their parents. I believe this is a universal drive, and I wanted to capture it from the perspective of someone famous—showing that even they were once like us. What were your initial reactions to the audience feedback? I was happy to hear the details they shared—it showed they were really focused while watching the film.
