Doch das Team Melli ist im neuen Jahrtausend ein regelmäßiger WM-Teilnehmer und bringt einen alten Bekannten auf der Trainerbank mit. Text: David Theis (90PLUS) Der Weg zur WM: Der Weg zur Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft ist für den Iran traditionell eine steinige Angelegenheit - wie auch die Turniere selbst: Bei bislang vier Endrundenteilnahmen (immerhin zwei davon bei den letzten drei Turnieren) kam der Iran nie über die Gruppenphase hinaus. Dennoch gelang dem Team von Trainer Carlos Queiroz beim Turnier in Brasilien ein Achtungserfolg, als man dem hochfavorisierten Argentinien bis zur Nachspielzeit mindestens Paroli bot (Endstand: 0:1). Zwar schied man auch 2014 als Gruppenletzter vorzeitig aus - doch der Iran qualifizierte zum ersten Mal in seiner Geschichte für zwei aufeinanderfolgende WM-Endrunden - und das sogar souverän: Das Team fährt ungeschlagen (sechs Siege, zwei Niederlagen, 26:3 Tore) nach Russland. Der Star: Kann ein Team wie der Iran (der Kader hat einen der niedrigsten geschätzten Marktwerte des Turniers) überhaupt einen Star haben? Kann es! Der Mann heißt Sardar Azmoun, ist 23 Jahre alt und spielt für Rubin Kazan - was wohl auch der einzige Grunde dafür ist, dass sein Name in europäischen Breitengraden noch weitgehend unbekannt ist. Doch seit seinem Debüt vor vier Jahren hat der dribbel- und kopfballstarke Mittelstürmer dem Team von Queiroz mit 23 Toren in 31 Spielen seinen Stempel aufgedrückt. Die Rolle des Go-to-guy füllter Azmoun dann erwartungsgemäß auch während der WM-Qualifikation aus: Wenn Azmoun fit war, spielte er immer - und 13 Torbeteiligungen in 14 Spielen sprechen eine deutliche Sprache. Nicht ganz so erfolgreich für sein Land war bislang Alireza Jahanbakhsh. Doch der vielseitige und enorm gefährliche Flügelspieler (33 Torbeteiligungen in 33 Ligaspielen für den AZ Alkmaar 2017/2018) ist dafür im Verein um so erfolgreicher: Nach einer überragenden Saison in den Niederlanden wird der 24-jährige bereits mit einem Wechsel zu diversen Premier League Clubs sowie dem SSC Neapel in Verbindung gebracht. Der mögliche Shooting Star: Der iranische Kader besteht zwar nicht nur aus Sardar Azmoun, doch auch in dieser Kategorie muss der Goalgetter ganz oben stehen. Denn so groß sein Stellenwert für das Team Melli (und seine Popularität im asiatischen Raum) auch sein mag - auf Vereins- und Turnierebene ist ihm der große Durchbruch (im Gegensatz zum Kollegen Jahanbakhsh, dem amtierenden Torschützenkönig der niederländischen Eredivisie) bislang verwehrt geblieben. Azmouns Name ist zwar in Scouting-Nerd-Kreisen schon seit Längerem kein unbekannter mehr, doch Queiroz wichtigstem Mittelstürmer fehlt es bei allem Fleiß und Kampfgeist bislang an der nötigen Trefferquote und Konstanz: 53 Torbeteiligungen sind bei 137 Spielen in der russischen Liga einfach zu wenig. Dass Azmoun beinahe für jede zweite Torbeteiligung eine gelbe Karte kassiert (insgesamt 25 im Ligawettbewerb), gibt Aufschluss darüber, welchen Spielertyp Irans Nummer 20 verkörpert. Reguliert Azmoun sein Spiel ein wenig zugunsten der Effizienz, könnte sein Team erneut zum ungemütlichen Gegner für einen der Großen werden. Der Trainer: Real Madrid, Manchester United, Portugals Nationalmannschaft Carlos Manuel Brito Leal Queiroz (Co-)Trainerstationen lassen sich sehen. Zwar feierte er bei keinem der genannten Engagements die ganz großen Erfolge, doch der in Mosambik geborene Ex-Stürmer genießt noch immer einen hervorragenden Ruf als Jugendcoach: Von 1988 bis 1991 feierte die portugiesische U-20 Nationalmannschaft unter ihm zahlreiche Erfolge. Im damaligen Nachwuchskader unter anderem: João Pinto, Paulo Sousa, Rui Costa und Luís Figo. Und so gilt Queiroz bis heute zurecht als Entdecker der so genannten Goldenen Generation Portugals - also der perfekte Aufbautrainer für ein kleines Fußballland? Zumindest hält sich der für sein Temperament gefürchtete Portugiese seit nunmehr 7 Jahren wacker auf seinem Posten - und der Iran wirkt dieser Tage (fußballerisch) so konstant wie lange nicht mehr. Das ist jedoch bei einem Coach, der mittlerweile drei verschiedene Nationalteams (Portugal, Südafrika & Iran) zu vier WM-Endrunden geführt hat, keine so große Überraschung, wie manch einer vielleicht auf den ersten Blick glauben mag: Denn der Iran ist derzeit eben nicht nur das am höchsten gelistete Team des asiatischen Kontinents (Platz 36 in der FIFA-Weltrangliste) sondern auch spielerisch eines der besten. Stärken und Schwächen: Das Prunkstück der iranischen Mannschaft ist ganz klar in der Offensive zu suchen: Azmoun, Jahanbakhsh, der erfahrene Karim Ansarifard (17 Saisontore für Olympiakos) oder Mehdi Taremi (Al Gharafa), Schütze des entscheidenden Tores zur WM-Qualifikation sind allesamt Mittel- oder Außenstürmer. In der Abwehr dagegen sieht es mager aus: Bis auf wenige Ausnahmen spielen alle Defensivakteure des Iran in der einheimischen Persian Gulf League, in Katar oder Russland. Es darf also erwartet werden, dass Queiroz Team, wie schon bei der Endrunde 2014, sein Heil in der Offensive suchen, hoch und aggressiv gegenpressen und schnell über die dribbelstarken Außen kontern wird. Dass es (Ausnahme: Azmoun) dabei allen Offensivkräften bislang am letzten Abschlussglück (für den Iran) mangelt, trübt zwar die Vorfreude ein wenig - dennoch ist aber zu erwarten, dass Queiroz (wie in der Vergangenheit auch) seine Formationen den Stärken des eigenen Kaders anpasst.
