Look, life is weird and difficult. Social situations are hard to navigate. The world is too loud or too scratchy. You're too loud or too bright or just “too much.” And then, a new diagnosis helps you understand all that friction in a new way. It doesn't magically make things better, but it does make things…. Different. On today's Here After with Megan Devine, Lauren Ober joins us to talk about The Loudest Girl in the World and her journey to understand what it means to be on the autism spectrum, living life as a newly diagnosed autistic person. In this episode we cover: How childhood experiences of shame and “othering” create lifelong ripples Why personality is a work in progress Can our definitions of “acceptable” grief expand to include a lot more of everyday life? What it means to be on the autism spectrum and how to live life as a newly diagnosed autistic person The accidental activist: how just living your life in full view helps people you don't even know Grief is always in the room. Want to become a grief-informed therapist? Registration is open now for Megan Devine's 6 month grief care professional program. Details at this link. Notable quotes: “It's like there's a particular type of thing you're allowed to grieve, like your cat dying, but you're not allowed to grieve the restaurant closing, a place that was filled with joy and delight. But you think - that's stupid. Why are you crying over that? My working definition of grief is just too narrow.” - Lauren Ober “When we make something visible, it allows other people to be curious about it, and to try it on for themselves. That to me is a really hopeful thing.” - Megan Devine Guest bio: Lauren Ober is a podcast host and producer, currently in production on a show about Koko the signing gorilla. MoviePass. Toys R Us. Forever 21. Napster. Pan Am. Once powerful, or at least profitable, brands are now history. What happened? This week, Zack talks to Lauren Ober of Spectacular Failures - a pod that details the rise and very steep falls of some of the biggest business busts of all time.
The Los Angeles restaurant Sqirl had lines down the block for brunches that featured its famous house-made jams on toast. But then a photo of discarded mold scraped from the jam, snapped by someone in the Sqirl kitchen, blew up the internet...and led to a reputation crisis Sqirl is still dealing with. In less than two years, Napster became a global sensation... and then record labels and multi-platinum artists brought it crashing down. Lauren Ober (@OberandOut) is the host of the podcast, Spectacular Failures. To offer your own advice, call Zak @ 844-935-BEST TRANSCRIPT: ZAK: Are you a news junkie but feel like you just can't handle it anymore? If so, today's advice is for you. LAUREN: I am a consummate news consumer. I love listening to the radio and I love reading the newspaper everyday and I have gotten to a point and I feel really sad about this where I can't consume the news anymore. It's so terrible. The view never changes. It's like catatonia, really. And so, I was like, I need something that feels like it has and ending. You know, that it isn't a story that lasts for six or nine or twelve months or whatever. I've always been interested...my guilty pleasure is British mystery novels. There's a beginning, a middle, and end, and then you're done. And I feel like our news cycle does not end with particular stories. And Corona virus is the most open ended hell you could ever conceive of, and these mystery novels...they're not like that. There are no real stakes. It's generally, like, a bunch of goobers who are just flitting about and like, maybe one person's gonna solve a mystery in their spare time. And most of the time they're like smoking pipes and reading The Telegraph. I'm just along for the ride but I know that by page 300, we're gonna be done. This problem is gonna come to an end. And that is very, very satisfying in this particular time that we're living in where nothing seems like it has an end-date. ZAK: So yours happen to be mystery novels, but someone's else's could be like a quilt. It could be. It absolutely could be. Any craft that has an end point. You start it and then you finish it. ZAK: That's partly why making this show has been helpful for me lately. These episodes are short. I can start then and end them. There's something satisfying there. LAUREN: My name is Lauren Ober. I'm the host of the podcast, Spectacular Failures. ZAK: If you have some advice for getting through these hard times, I would love to hear it. The hotline number is 844-935-BEST.

He seems bewildered by the scathing criticism he's getting from just about every quarter on his controversial, military-style, strong-arm program to "restore law and order" to cities and communities overrun by crime. Instead, it is galvanizing a wide spectrum of opposition. Moreover, it's added even more dead weight to a flagging campaign. Will it cause him to quit the race?

More than half of the U.S. population over age 12 has now listened to a podcast, according to Edison Research. The medium has fundamentally altered the landscape for audio content, liberating and empowering both listeners and creators. And big acquisitions such as Spotify’s purchase of Gimlet Media signal that the business of podcasting is coming of age, too. But there remains an economic gulf that some entrepreneurs and investors see as an opportunity. Ad spending on podcasting is around $500 million, by some estimates, but that compares to $17 billion or more for radio. So where is podcasting heading next? How will speech recognition, smart speakers and other innovations change the landscape for podcasts? Should you start your own show? Could you make any money if you did? On this episode of the GeekWire Podcast, we’re going meta. It’s a podcast about podcasting: a discussion with podcast producers, media vets and startup entrepreneurs, recorded on stage at the GeekWire Summit this fall. Phyllis Fletcher, the senior editor for podcasts at American Public Media, who has worked on shows including APM’s hit business podcast, Spectacular Failures. You may recognize her voice from her previous work as a reporter and editor at KUOW Radio in Seattle. (You can check out all of her tweets from the GeekWire Summit here.) Steve Henn, who leads content strategy for audio news at Google. He’s a journalist turned tech entrepreneur who left a career in radio to co-found a digital media startup that was acquired by Google in 2017. You may recognize his voice from his work in public radio as a correspondent on such shows as Marketplace, Planet Money and NPR. David Payne, the president of Rainstream Media and the co-creator, author and executive producer of its flagship show, “Somebody Somewhere,” a true crime podcast. A lawyer and former federal prosecutor, his career in media has included roles as Chief Digital Officer for Gannett/USA Today, and senior vice president and GM of CNN Digital. Amira Valliani is the CEO and co-founder of Glow, a Seattle startup and Pioneer Square Labs spinout that is building a subscription, monetization and distribution platform for podcasts. She served as a communications adviser in the Obama White House and as a speechwriter for then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She got started in podcasting with her own local politics show in Cambridge, Mass.
Failing is super hot these days - just look at the inventory of TED Talks for proof. Everyone is trying to glean meaning from their flops and fails and foibles. But what if there is no upside to failure? What if crashing and burning is just an unavoidable part of the creative process? Rather than glorify failure or run screaming from it, Spectacular Failures host Lauren Ober will help you just accept it. This session was part of the Womxnifestos series, the hot takes you didn’t know you needed. They’re distilled wisdom of experience spiced with the power of conviction. These lightning talks are a MOOD. Hosted by Dessa, Werk It: The Podcast is the ICYMI version of the live event. TBTL may have half-assed Summer Games Week (as well as the pronunciation of chorizo and allium), but Ann, Mike and Bobby are most definitely full-assing this week’s LRB. Bobby just got back from Blue Jays Loonie Dog Night in Toronto, and the Great White North isn’t looking so great these days. Ann is standing ready to rescue her dearest Justin, though he now has competition for her affection from a handsome young new Scottish fellow. And Mike is suffering from a bout of sociopolitical indigestion after the President’s “perp rally,” though a gelatin-suspended seafood sample didn’t help. Plus, a blissfully short breakdown of TBTL’s quizzes, an apropos reminder that the worst wounds are the emotional ones (with examples!), and an audio postcard from middle-aged transcontinental mom-iish type Hillary, recorded after a harrowing Hungarian pedicab ride. Remember: Come to our picnic on July 26th! Bring anything you like as long as it isn’t aspic. And, go listen to Spectacular Failures, edited by our own P-Fletch!

Corporate crookedness. Family feuding. Hilariously half-baked decisions. Host Lauren Ober tackles some of the most spectacular business failures of all time, and what could have been done to avoid them. Coming June 17.
Lauren Ober is an award-winning journalist, podcast consultant and host of American Public Media's new podcast "Spectacular Failures" and previously host of NPR’s “The Big Listen.” She’s currently gearing up to host a new show for American Public Media (APM) expected to launch in May 2019. Before becoming a kick-ass podcaster and journalist, Lauren studied Justice and Public Affairs at American University in Washington, D.C. It wasn’t until after graduating or, more specifically, until after not doing so hot on the LSAT exanm, that Lauren realized instead of her initial hopes of studying law, what she really wanted to pursue was journalism. To get her foot in the door and quickly beef up her reporting chops, she attended the journalism Master’s program at Syracuse University. Lauren worked as a newspaper reporter until 2012, when she attended a storytelling workshop hosted by Transom, an innovative radio training group, that changed the course of her career.
