He appeared on the show last year to discuss his new series at the time, She Wolf, but this time he talks about Spy Seal, his intriguing new anthropomorphic espionage series from Image Comics. They begin by chronicling the genesis of the story, a comic that Rich began as a thirteen-year-old, and then discuss the development of the premise and the various choices Rich made in situating his narrative. One way that Rich describes his new series is by paying homage to Hergé's Tintin, the globetrotting young investigator who always found himself immersed in adventure and intrigue. He also discloses many of the lessons he learned with his previous Image series, both She Wolf and Dark Corridors, his love of genre, and his need to move on -- at least momentarily -- from psychological horror and crime stories. Derek also asks Rich about his plans for future Spy Seal narrative arcs, the temporal settings of these plots, and the ways in which the uncertainty of creator-0wned series impacts a writer's storytelling choices.

Once again, it’s a double-header episode this week, as #293 focuses on two great comics creators! First up is Rich Tommaso, THE creator behind Spy Seal, a fanciful yet realistic spy story that follows the adventures of a seal character who becomes a spy! We discuss how he’s bringing this imaginative title to life with Image Comics, who the characters are in this spy franchise, and what we can expect from him in Spy Seal in the future! For more on this graphic novel series and about Rich, go to this website. Then everything concludes with the return of Sam Johnson, who updates us on his Geek-Girl comic, among other things! His Kickstarter for the Geek-Girl collected edition ends this week, on Thursday, August 10, so this is the perfect time to jump on board because Sam’s has been adding excellent goodies to this successful project! Sam also discusses what’s in the future for this most “human” of super-human comics! For more about Geek-Girl, go to this link! You can follow Sam here to keep up with what he’s creating!
In this episode, Wendi examines the creators of two very different spy books from Image Comics. Both writers tell stories of the cold war influenced by their impressions growing up. First, she talks to Rich Tommaso, writer and artist of "Spy Seal". In "The Corten Steel Phoenix" he tells the story of a seal forced into dangerous circumstances beyond his control. He uses anthropomorphic animals to weave a web of politics and intrigue. After the break, she has a chat with Antony Johnston on the day the film, "Atomic Blonde" is released. Based on his graphic novel "The Coldest City", Charlize Theron portrays MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton in her very cool, calculated style. He discusses his involvement in the filmmaking process and how much it detracts from and stays true to the source material. He has a new series out now, "Ghost Station Zero"- vol. 2 of his series "Codename: Baboushka", an action packed, pulp thriller with a sexy Russian female lead.
