Episode 117!? This week we are giving our thoughts on "BRZRKR Vol. 1", as well as going over some nerd news! I can't wait to hear what you all think of our opinion! We decided we wanted you guys to get to know the real us so we're taking a break on any real editing. Apologies ahead of time to anyone we offend. A WAR WITH NO END. The man known only as B. is half-mortal and half-God, cursed and compelled to violence...even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the world for centuries, the Berzerker may have finally found a refuge – working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B. will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence…and how to end it. Keanu Reeves makes his comic book writing debut alongside New York Times bestselling co-writer Matt Kindt (Folklords, Grass Kings) and legendary artist Ron Garney (Wolverine) in a brutally violent new series about one immortal warrior's fight through the ages. Collects BRZRKR #1-4. Images to go with this episode available starting 8/15/17 at http://wp.me/p42KN3-Fhz Welcome to the Comics Syllabus podcast, where we read widely and we dig deep. Your host Paul, a literacy researcher and English teacher, introduces curious readers to a range of current and classic comics, and then engages in closer discussion and analysis of a certain title with comics critics, creators, scholars, and teachers. On this week's Comics Syllabus podcast, Paul digs deep with fellow Multiversity contributor Kent Falkenberg about "Dept H" by Matt and Sharlene Kindt from Dark Horse. (Images and links to go with our conversation are below!) Then in the "General Ed" segment at ( 02:07:05 ), Kent holds forth about some comics related to "Dept H," including "Grass Kings" by Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins (Boom!), "Royal City" by Jeff Lemire (Image), and "The Wake" by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy (Vertigo). He also recommends "Mister Miracle" #1 by Tom King and Mitch Gerads (DC) and "Swordquest" by Chad Bowers, Chris Sims, and Ghostwriter X (Dynamite). Studios, his two current ongoing series from Dark Horse Comics, Dept. H and Ether, and his voluminous work for Valiant Comics. The guys have been wanting to get Matt on the show for years, so this interview is a long time in coming. And the conversation is quite substantive. Among other topics, they discuss the geneses of these recent series; Matt's strategies for juggling multiple storylines at once; his collaborations with Tyler Jenkins (on Grass Kings), David Rubín (Ether), and Brian Hurtt (Poppy! and the Lost Lagoon); the many titles he has written for Valiant Comics; his love of genre storytelling; the unique way he "signs" certain books at cons; and his creative direction after the groundbreaking Mind MGMT. This has to be one of the most prolific creators the guys have ever had on The Comics Alternative, and they come nowhere near covering all of the topics they wanted to discuss with Matt. But this is all the more reason to have him back on the show in the not-too-distant future.
The power couple discusses episodes 5 & 6 of Legion (7:24), Kong: Skull Island (13:04), and Grass Kings, the new book from Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins (18:07).
