Join Sir. Sturdy on "Horror with Sir. Sturdy" as we slice into the visceral and controversial world of "Ichi the Killer." Directed by Takashi Miike and based on the manga by Hideo Yamamoto, this film stars Tadanobu Asano as Kakihara and Nao Omori as Ichi. Released in 2001, "Ichi the Killer" hails from Japan, specifically filmed in and around the vibrant streets of Shinjuku, Tokyo. This episode delves into the film's extreme depiction of violence and psychological manipulation, exploring its cult status and impact on horror cinema.
To close out the series on Japanese Horror, Spit Picks looks at a director known for testing the limits of violence on film.Takashi Miike is best known for three things: He is prolific, versatile, and is no stranger to using extreme gore. With 115 directorial credits listed on his IMDb page (at time of publishing), he has made films in just about every genre imaginable. But from blood-soaked epics like Ichi The Killer and 13 Assassins to a glut of Yakuza films, and even a death-centric musical comedy in The Happiness of the Katakuris, Miike's films are never shy to show off fountains of gore with no sense of shyness. But through them all, Miike always injects his unique style, no matter the genre. With Bennett Glace and Jim Hickcox, Split Picks finishes its special series on Japanese Horror by comparing Miike's masterwork to one of his most extreme depictions of violence — an almost hour-long school shooting. With Audition, Miike follows a widowed man, Shigeharu (Ryo Ishibashi), after his friend suggests they set up a film audition to help him find a new wife. When he meets Asami (Eihi Shiina), they quickly fall in love, but everyone around Shigeharu tells him to notice the red flags, which he gleefully overlooks, until he finds himself in a scenario that ranks among the most infamous torture scenes on film. It's a testament to Audition that, in an era when most successful Asian films were remade by Americans, still no one has remade this tale of revenge. Lesson of the Evil finds a popular and handsome teacher on a path to violence against his own students. With a code of morals that makes sense to only him, he tries to stop his students from cheating on tests and uncovers various scandals in the school. As his background comes into focus, he doubles down on what he learned during his time in the United States and. with the assistance of a talking shotgun, he decides to solve his problems in the worst way possible. The pairing of films provides some fascinating contrasts in tone, and some striking similarities in their overall structure. In this episode, the gang discusses how Audition bends time, if Lesson of the Evil crosses the limits of acceptable violence on film, and how As The Gods Will might be the spiritual sequel to Lesson of the Evil that makes black humor work in a similarly morbid scenario.
3 weeks ago Zach was on the show to discuss Audition and I recommended Ichi the Killer. We (sorta) watched it together and wanted to get together for an informal chat about it. Well, well, well...looks like I've finally managed to release a new episode almost on time for once. Of course I bring Bobby from The Grindbin Podcast to discuss maybe one of the most viceral and unsettling films to ever be discussed on the Podcastio. There may not be many mustaches in this film, but it makes up for it by having so many "wtf" moments. The Moustachioed Podcastio is the weird uncle of the wonderful PodMoth Media Network. The ghouls explore a haunt in HELL HOUSE LLC (2015). Then, they celebrate the #1 sadomasochist daddy with ICHI THE KILLER (2001). Will a found footage gem finally enter the tub, or will sado-daddy win the day? PLUS, a new award is revealed and a surprise is teased. WARNING: This episode contains descriptions of extreme violence (some involving children), sexual assault, animal abuse and killing, bullying, and torture in the context of the films discussed. Listener discretion is advised. For questions, comments, or other information, send us an email at deadbodpod@gmail.com
Psychopaths is the latest the latest theme. First up, "White Heat", James Cagney classic star turn as Cody Jarrett, the psycho criminal gang leader who doesn't mind killing and also had a weird thing for his mother. The on screen violent tendencies are much milder in this film, than it is in our second feature, "Ichi the Killer". From Japan, Ichi is based on a popular comic book series and really goes for the gusto when it comes to crazy, bloodbath scenes. Next, women thieves with Alfred Hitchcock's "Marnie" (1964) and "Emily the Criminal" (2023)Have your own recommendations? Contact the show:24theroadshow@gmail.com

Director Sam Sherman's company INDEPENDENT-INTERNATIONAL PICTURES CORP purchased an unfinished 80 minute film called DYING DAY from special FX artist Brett Piper, which was re-shot over and over and over until becoming RAIDERS OF THE LIVING DEAD. This month we talk about the illustrious career of the one and only Tadanobu Asano. Actor, musician, illustrator, and all around renaissance man. He's starred in everything from iconic classics like ICHI THE KILLER and ZATOICHI, to cult international arthouse films like RUINED HEART and LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE. We also discuss Adam's two big releases for the month, Gakuryu Ishii's ELECTRIC DRAGON 80.000V and PUNK SAMURAI SLASH DOWN. In Electric Dragon, Tadanobu plays a violent, guitar-playing, electrically charged boxer wh0 faces off against an electronic wizard half-merged with a metallic Buddha. If you think that sounds crazy then just wait till you see who he plays in Punk Samurai!!! Both films are available with limited edition artwork and slipcases via Terracotta Distribution here - https://shop.terracottadistribution.com/ Follow Adam on Twitter, Instagram and Youtube Follow Ben on Twitter and Letterboxd If you enjoy our little show then please give us a 5 star rating and review wherever you listen, and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss an episode. Ichi the Killer by Hideo Yamamoto (1998-2001) Ichi the Killer dir. Takashi Miike (2001) We go into a deep dive on the Ichi manga, which was written around the same time that Miike was adapting it into his iconic film. What does the manga do differently from the film? Which is better? In the process of analyzing the work, we discover new insights about the relationship between creator and audience, and the power of creativity and the imagination. On the free episode, we talk about: Lost mail, editing promotion, working while parenting, looking for prolific author clients, natural gas bills, social media pink cloud, sacrificing birds, separate golem, no moderating, Ichi the Killer manga fan translation, the abomination of converting 16mm to 4K, the necessary layer of grime, estate sales, the history of hankos, Japanese surnames, the two Kakiharas, the prince albert punishment, Tetsuo's discharge, describing Ichi the Killer with delicate language, sweetness perception, and becoming the TV. On Agitator Z, we talk: Burning the boats, owning a UPS store, Ichi the Killer manga recap, submissive sadism and aggressive masochism, the people who act like clowns are the actual psychopaths, Ichi as a representative of the political class, yakuza as dogs, torturing the audience, Gus the hype man, treating violence as sacred vs. comical, the place for edgelords, the narcissism of the artist, relationship to art is relationship to community, ass blood sprinkler, the lengthy middle of the Ichi manga, the Psycho Twins, everything is the period, trademark dreads, turning dicks into tuning forks, the differences of the endings, the only regular guy in the manga, Ichi the Killer as a metaphor for the artistic process, bean thieves, Yamamoto and Miike working together, playing Yakuza, serialized novel talk, Ichi the Killer 2, never winning the lottery and sigil work. Takashi Miike has made over a hundred feature films, but for our super-sized Halloween episode we're tackling his two most notorious: 1999's stealth extreme horror film Audition, and 2001's ultra-violent yakuza thriller Ichi the Killer. To help us out, we welcome back one of our favorite guests, Kay (aka govnaim), who previously brought their expertise to our discussion of Salò. Topics include what makes Audition so different from Miike's other blood-soaked genre exercises, and whether Ichi crosses the line from gory fun to truly ugly violence. We're back after being away for almost a whole month! Again, we're so sorry for delaying yet another episode. As you can tell by the title, we have some major life updates that will affect the show moving forward. All will be explained in this episode. We're gathered here again with Susan (who is now pretty much a co-host of the show) to discuss a film that is described as a campy, satirical homage to late 60's technicolor B-movies: The Love Witch. It's a very fitting film for the time we're living in as it dissects heteronormative relationships and gender roles/dynamics and how they affect women. We also catch up on some other movies we saw over this past month such as Audition & Neptune Frost. Plenty of things to discuss in this episode, so don't skip a second! The film is based on the true-life story of serial killer Henry Lee Lucas.WoHos, we pose it to you: Is it a good movie if you have to read the book / manga before you watch the movie? WoHos!This week I looked at two Foundational films about identity.Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde is a 1971 British horror film directed by Roy Ward Baker based on the 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. The film was made by British studio Hammer Film Productions and was their third adaptation of the story after The Ugly Duckling and The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll. The film is notable for showing Jekyll transform into a female Hyde; it also incorporates into the plot aspects of the historical Jack the Ripper and Burke and Hare cases.Dead Ringers is a 1988 psychological thriller film starring Jeremy Irons in a dual role as identical twin gynecologists. David Cronenberg directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Norman Snider. Their script was based on the lives of Stewart and Cyril Marcus and on the novel Twins by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland, a "highly fictionalized" version of the Marcuses' story. The film won numerous honors, including for Irons' performance, and 10 Genie Awards, notably Best Motion Picture. Toronto International Film Festival critics have ranked it among the Top 10 Canadian Films of All Time. Some questions remain:How central to your identity is your gender?Which is the worse decision: taking female hormones to extend one's life or becoming addicted to pills in order to save your brotherWho's right about Mr. Cronenberg's film: Your humble host or David Cronenberg, himself?Philosophy Corner™ makes its first appearance on the podcast.
