Why Testing Drugs Is Dicier Than Drug Possession In Portland

Oregon has seen a big increase in overdoses in recent years as street drugs laced with synthetic opioids like fentanyl have flooded our communities. But while we passed laws decriminalizing drug possession in Oregon a few years ago, having the tools to test the safety of those drugs comes with stiffer penalties under state law right now. Today on City Cast Portland, we're looking at a new law the state is considering that aims to change that. Lead producer John Notarianni talks with Dean Shold, the co-founder of the nonprofit FentCheck, about how greater access to $1 testing strips could save lives. During the pandemic two friends, Andy Gish and our Episode 8 guest, Kim Ware, created the Kimono My House Facebook page for musicians to have a platform to perform during quarantine. Tom thought up an idea of a show on KMH which would include sets by Blake Rainey, Lars Nagel and himself. Dubbed THE BLT show, it quickly became a regular weekly thing with incredible rotating musicians from all over the country. As quarantine slowly and safely let up and venues reopened, that same community of musicians and music lovers began playing shows together in person.  A few weeks ago, at the Star Community Bar, a fantastic lineup met for BLT Fest 2 (you may remember BLT Fest 1 at Waller's where we had a wonderful conversation with our Episode 39 guest, Daniel Gay from Worcester, Massachusetts) and we again took the opportunity to sit down with a couple guests from out of state to discuss their record picks. First up is our friend, Vic Burgess, aka Chattanooga Vic, from, you guessed it, Chattanooga Tennessee. Vic gave us several great record choices and we settled on the fantastic No Depression by Uncle Tupelo, which inspired the creation of the alt-country periodical of the same name and helped define a genre. Here's what Vic had to say about the experience: "A great quality about music, and art in general, is how perspectives can change when discussed and evaluated by a group of friends. One outside observation can turn a song or a whole album on its head. Discussing this album with my friends who had different takes on it opened my mind up to different angles that I hadn't thought of before." - Vic Burgess  We couldn't agree more, Vic! We're so excited to have finally had Vic on as a guest and to share the awesome conversation we had about this iconic record which kicked off the legacies of Wilco and Sun Volt, took inspiration from both punk and country, then blended them together so seamlessly the album title is sometimes used as a synonym for the entire alternative country genre. No Depression by Uncle Tupelo is a true gem and if you haven't heard it yet you should definitely put that on your list. James couldn't be at the Star Bar the Sunday of the BLT Fest but he will be back for Episode 56. Be sure to check out Vic's band, The ExLaws, and some of his solo work at the links below. Baseball and BBQ Episode #142 Features Russell Turner of All-Star Bar-B-Q, Baseball Rebels and Major League Rebels Authors, Peter Dreir and Robert Elias, and Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding Russell Turner opened All-Star Bar-B-Q in Rusk, Texas in 1993 and has served "smoked to perfection" BBQ.  In Texas, outstanding barbecue may not be hard to find, but Russell has combined great barbecue with his love of baseball, more specifically, his love of the Houston Astros and serves up great food in a fun atmosphere.  Lovers of baseball history, especially that of the Houston Astros that began in 1962 as the Houston Colt .45s, will spend lots of time enjoying awesome barbecue while they enjoy the tons of baseball memorabilia throughout the place.  Doug Scheiding of Rogue Cookers joins us as guest co-host. Baseball and BBQ are definitely on this menu. Peter Dreir and Robert Elias set out to write one book on some of the players and others associated with baseball who "stood up to racists, war-mongers, and their own greedy owners"  as well as including baseball people who "challenged both the baseball establishment and society's status quo."  Their research yielded an overwhelming number of fascinating items and thus, one book was not good, but two books were just right.  Baseball Rebels:  The Players, People, And Social Movements That Shook Up The Game And Changed America and Major League Rebels:  Baseball Battles Over Workers' Rights And American Empire are two books filled with incredible baseball history.  Dreier and Elias are distinguished professors by day, and we feel they earned their PhD's writing two outstanding books.  We recommend you go to BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, and the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, and Cutting Edge Firewood https://www.cuttingedgefirewood.com/ for high-quality firewood and cooking wood. We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" by the musician, Dave Dresser, and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe. This week Kyle is solo having a very intimate chat with Joe Dosch about Black Metal. They talk about the strangely universal nature of this extreme music genre. Joe chronicles his early days of discovering metal and does a pretty fantastic job explaining the appeal of extreme music. They talk about what makes a good black metal band and they explore some of the darker and more unseemly sides of the genre as well. Good lucky trying to spell most of the band names they bring up this episode, but honestly its a pretty solid primer for the uninitiated into the world of black metal. And hey, we even stay on topic for about the first hour and change. The last forty minutes Kyle and Joe totally go off topic and end up talking about life, art, politics, and in general are two friends catching up and chatting. If you don't wanna hear two guys chatting, if you bail about an hour and ten in, you should get pretty much your fill of metal. Also, this was recorded in early June and then go lost in the cracks for a few months. We are glad we are finally able to present it to you and sorry to Joe for it taking so gosh darn long.   Weekly Rad:   Kyle - Building Stories by Chris Ware (comic)   Kyle's album taping is this upcoming Monday (Dec 3rd) at 8pm at Star Bar in Atlanta, GA! This Is Rad returns to a tradition that we totally forgot to do last year! Kyle, Matthew, and Laura sat down a few days before Thanksgiving to chat and catch up. Everybody has been pretty brutally busy and we decided it would be fun to talk about things we are thankful for and in general just hang out as the Rad Fam. We talk about being tired a lot. And sleeping on planes. And Pokemon. And Kyle tells a few stories that he has FOR SURE told on the podcast before. But it's fun. If you ever want to know what it sounds like for the 10 minutes before we start recording this is a pretty close approximation. But it's not all gloomy sleepy, there are some fun riffs and bits and some chat about Thanksgiving food. Also a debate about what constitutes a Turkey's butt. All three of us would like to take a moment to truly and earnestly thank everyone that listens to the show. As 2018 comes into the home stretch we've really taken stock of how amazing our community of listeners are. Without you were would be three weirdos doing voices in a living room. But thanks to you, we are three weirdos doing voices in a living room who have the sweetest, smartest, and kindest fans a podcast could ask for (take THAT other podcasts!). Thank you for listening and have a festive and safe Thanksgiving!   Kyle's livestream of “Absolute Terror” his new comedy album is THIS FRIDAY (11/23/18) at 7pm pst on Twitch. This week on the show Kyle and Matthew took a field trip to Disgraceland, the home of their sister podcast The Goods From The Woods, to chat with Rivers Langley, along with River's Mom Gail Langley and first time guest Rosalie Atkinson about one of the great American rock bands The Allman Brothers Band. Kyle and Rivers both share their fandom for the band and Matt talks about his discovery of the band through Rock Band. But Rosalie... Rosalie is on a whole other level. Over the past few years Rosalie has been working on a project about the band that included a pretty incredible road trip/pilgrimage with her Mom to significant locations in the bands history. Along the way she's talked to a ton of folks who worked with the group and her knowledge on the subject is pretty nuts. This is some good old fashion music nerdery. Whether you are a longtime fan or totally unfamiliar with their music, this is a fantastic primer and celebration of the band, their music, and their somewhat tragic history. So kick back, eat a peach, and enjoy!   Weekly Rads:   Matthew: Fleabag (amazon show)   Laura: Sorry To Bother You (movie)   Kyle: Radland Records (Kyle is starting a small comedy record label!)   Come to Kyle's album taping December 3rdat Star Bar in Atlanta, Georgia.   Also: Between now and December, if you would like to schedule a time for Kyle to run his hour with you one on one or with a small group (or if you live in the southwestern United States and have somewhere you'd like him to perform, or if you wanna watch him do it via skype) please contact us atthisisradpodcast@gmail.combecause seriously he's pretty much down for anything as he tries to finalize his new album. Kaustubh “Stubhy” Pandav has had a lengthy career in music that’s nearly impossible to categorize. While he’s best known for being the frontman of Lucky Boys Confusion, he’s a songwriter that’s been perfecting his craft for over 20 years, while building up a rock ‘n’ roll resume that can’t be confined to a single band or genre. We met up at Five Star Bar in Chicago, IL to talk music and beer, and in the process, share Stubhy’s story, from the formation of Lucky Boys Confusion to the writing of their latest record – and first in nearly a decade – Stormchasers. Stubhy doesn’t hold back when discussing the struggles he and the band went through over the years, shedding light on the sometimes-harsh realities of popularity, labels, expectations, and fame. But, Stubhy also knows his brews. We plow through more drinks than we’ve ever had on the show before, resulting in a beer-and-whiskey-fueled “Tipsy Talk” segment during Round 2 (or 3, or 4, or whatever it is at that point) that is sure to keep you entertained. Don’t forget to check out Stubhy’s latest musical project The Hoodie Life, and after you listen to this episode, make sure to head over to PubcastWorldwide.com to leave a comment and sign-up for the monthly “Brewsletter.” Cheers!
