Steph Tuss, CEO of Life Is Now, joins the Fitness Business Podcast to discuss the importance of accountability in teams. She emphasizes the need for a clear vision communicated to the team, as well as agreed-upon measures of success. Tuss believes accountability should be a collaborative process, with leaders supporting their team members in achieving their goals. She also highlights the importance of fostering a culture of psychological safety, where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas and engaging in healthy debate. Tuss provides practical strategies for holding teams accountable and creating a productive and innovative environment. Key Takeaways: A clear vision communicated to the team is essential for fostering accountability. Agreed-upon measures of success help team members understand their responsibilities and hold themselves accountable. Leaders should approach accountability conversations to support and empower team members, rather than to reprimand or criticize. Building psychological safety within the organization encourages healthy debate and innovation. Mistakes should be seen as learning opportunities and leaders should model vulnerability by admitting their own mistakes.

Steph Tuss is the CEO of multimillion-dollar global consulting company Life Is Now, Inc., and frequent stand-in cohost of Business Daily News' top-ranked podcast - The Successful Mind. Steph discovered her love for teaching at a young age, beginning her career as an educator. It was during this time that her firstborn child was facing health difficulties, and she decided to completely overhaul their diets to figure out the root cause. She went back to school to pursue a Master's Degree in Holistic Nutrition and went on to open a practice to help families who faced similar challenges. Fast forward a few years, Steph hired David Neagle and his team at Life Is Now, Inc., as her health practice's business coach. As she continued to scale her business, her love for entrepreneurship and growing businesses shined through. She sold her business at the age of 33 and joined Life Is Now, Inc. as the Director of Sales in 2009 before taking on the CEO role less than a decade later in 2016. In her six years at the helm of the company, Steph has become the primary driver behind all of Life Is Now's marketing, business development and brilliant team culture. As a recent empty-nester, she lives in Charlotte, NC with her husband and cattle dog, Jack. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling the country in her Airstream. Here's what we covered on the episode: How Steph Became a Leader As a child, Steph was always told to quit being bossy, which caused her to fly under the radar in grade school, but when she went to college, she became a teacher because it was an acceptable way to be a leader  In 2001, Steph had her first child, who had a lot of health issues - after extensive research, Steph discovered she was suffering from food sensitivities and wanted to teach and share what she discovered with other people Steph went back to school and got her master's degree in holistic nutrition, and began to build her business which grew very quickly The business started to plateau, so Steph hired David as a business coach, who is now her business partner - though his coaching Steph fell more in love with business building and mindset work than with nutrition After 3 years, Steph sold her business to work with David at Life is Now, where she started in sales and is now the CEO Steph talks about what led her to seek out a business coach to help her see what she needed to change to grow her business  How Steph said yes to every opportunity within Life is Now so she could learn all parts of the business and become a part of the leadership After the current CEO left, Steph took on the responsibilities of the CEO without her role changing - one day, she walked into David's office and told him he needed to make her the CEO, and he did  Now, Steph isn't just the CEO; she is also a partner in Life is Now    Establishing Good Culture + Team Synergy  One of the first big changes Steph made as CEO was establishing psychological safety because of the previous CEO, people were scared to share their opinions As a CEO, you have to model what you want to see other people do; that means being transparent about what you're learning, telling them when you don't feel confident, sharing when you make mistakes, and celebrating the good Steph would host workshops on how to give to receive feedback to get people comfortable with conflict because businesses are here to solve problems, and you need people to share their ideas to come up with solutions If you want to know more about psychological safety, which is the most important when it comes to developing culture, Steph recommends the book, The Fearless Organization by Amy Edmondson Next, Steph shares that they established a clear vision by taking the team through a vision process that's outlined in Cameron Herold's book, Vivid Vision When you follow this vision process, Steph says you'll usually hit your vision goals within one or two years because it creates focus synergy for your team  Big lessons Steph has learned are that mistakes are required and to not take results personally   By creating a visionary leadership assessment, Steph was able to see that there are 4 different types of leaders: Catalyst, Charismatic, Limitless, and Legacy Leaders  Go to lifeisnowinc.com, and you can find their visionary leadership assessment  Steph talks about the rebrand they recently went through that switched the company from being about a person to being about their ideal client  How a lot of business owners get stuck doing tasks that shouldn't be on their plate because they aren't good at delegating  Check out the Life is Now Website and connect with Steph on Instagram for lots of free industry and business resources   Links mentioned: Life Is Now Inc. Today, my guest is Steph Tuss. Steph is the CEO of a company called Light Is Now, a consulting company that works with small firms and businesses, including law firms, to help them grow, prosper, and to give time back to those who are leading those endeavors to live their best life. We had her business partner, David Neagle, on last year and I wanted to have Steph on because she has more of the hands-on, tactical role in their company, whereas David is the more visionary individual, and so I wanted to kind of complete the picture with her. She gives some great tips and you will get some great takeaways. In this episode, Neil and Steph discuss:Understanding why you don't do the things you know you need to do. Utilizing an integrator in your business to focus on your areas of genius. Putting dissatisfaction into action. Working with your team not controlling and micromanaging. Key Takeaways:There are two parts to change: awareness and applying new behaviors. If you don't hire the right people, it will be harder for your business to succeed. Your team is only as good as your worst player. Set your team up for success from the beginning. Until you have the right things in your business, you don't know if you are stifling your A-Players. Be willing to pay for one person who can do the jobs you need done well, rather than spending less on multiple people who will do it less well. "You've got to start employing new behaviors because that's the only way that change actually occurs. If you just have the awareness, nothing changes, nothing happens. You have to show up differently, which means you have to act differently." — Steph TussEpisode References: The Law Entrepreneur - Understanding the Art of Leverage with David Neagle: https://thelawentrepreneur.com/episodes/333-understanding-the-art-of-leverage-with-david-neagle/ No Rules Rules by Reed Hastings: https://www.amazon.com/No-Rules-Netflix-Culture-Reinvention/dp/B0845Z14DX/ Get in touch with Steph Tuss:Website: https://www.lifeisnowinc.com/ Successful Mind Podcast: https://www.successfulmindpodcast.com/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/stephtuss Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. This week on Maximum Mom, your host Elise Buie is joined by Steph Tuss. Women in particular are burdened with a double edged sword – society tells us that our values are built on being a mother to our children, but it also says we should go out and have a career or business of our own. Raising children and excelling as an entrepreneur at the same time are two barely synchronizable endeavors. Mothers don't even have to fail in one of these areas to feel mom guilt.Steph Tuss – CEO of the multimillion-dollar global consulting company Life Is Now, Inc – has been pretty familiar with this mom guilt feeling, all too well. Before joining Life Is Now, Steph left her career as an educator to launch her own holistic nutrition business, having been inspired by her first daughter's growing health challenges and her quest for the root cause. Her sole focus when starting her business was to replace her teacher salary of $37,000/year. In spite of the people around her not being confident that she was going to make it, Steph was willing to do anything necessary to continue forward. So much so, that she was working early mornings, late nights and weekends – it got to a point where she literally couldn't do more and started to resent her business. She started her business because she wanted freedom, but ironically, she had created a jail for herself.Steph realized she was diminishing her returns by not hiring someone to help in her business and with her kids. She let go of mom guilt, sold her business, and joined Life Is Now as the Director of Sales. She was frequently traveling the world with the new company and during one of their events, she realized her ideal life would involve her daughters traveling with her. Steph and her husband then made the decision to go for it: They pulled their kids out of school and hired a tutor + nanny that would travel alongside the family, regardless of people constantly questioning their decision. What does "success" mean to you? Thanks for tuning into the Scale Your Small Business Podcast with your host, Jillian Flodstrom! Joining us today is Steph Tuss. Steph has always had a passion for education, and when her firstborn faced health problems, she overhauled their diets to find the root cause. After earning her Master's Degree in holistic nutrition, she opened a practice to help families facing similar challenges. Fast forward, Steph hired a business coach in David Neagle and his team at Life is Now Inc., where she now sits as CEO.    We're taught from a young age that mistakes are a horrible thing. But when you take a step back and look at every aspect of business, you begin to notice that mistakes are necessary. You don't grow without making mistakes. With many small business owners, there is a deep fear of making a mistake, as they're portrayed as an embarrassing, negative thing. You either win or you learn. Just because it's painful doesn't mean you aren't growing from it.    Those mistakes often manifest in sales. Steph reminds us that when someone says ‘no' they're not saying it to you, they're saying it to themselves. Sales is a vulnerable practice—don't make it personal. The goal of the sales conversation is to create clarity—identifying a problem and presenting a solution. It's about coming from a place of service.    If you're talking more than your prospect is talking, Steph points out, that's not a good sales conversation. A sales conversation should be full of questions. The idea is that you're info gathering in a way that serves both of you. Take control of the conversation to put your potential client at ease. People are looking for confidence. Steph has seen people struggle when they try to use a script. Avoid dumping information on someone–listen, don't convince. Ask what the client needs, their goals, and their desired end results. Understand their fears and what happens if they can't solve their problem.    People don't buy the “thing,” they buy the result the “thing” is going to provide. When making an offer, it's easy to get into the nuts and bolts of what you can give them, but in the end, that isn't what matters. It's about connecting what you can do to what result they are looking for, and building excitement around the desired end goal.    Listen to changes in tone and be mindful of emotional responses. While you're in a conversation, be aware of any shifts in the way they are speaking—getting quiet may mean you've hit something that's important to them, whereas shutting it down means they may not be interested at all in what you're saying.    Being an active listener is essential. Put the script down and give yourself permission to mess up. Take a few breaths after your potential client finished speaking and set a pace to make sure the client feels heard.    Not every conversation is going to be great—there will be moments where you've felt like you've totally bombed. That's okay. When this happens, Steph would journal about the conversation, listening back to a recording to find where the conversation went off the rails. This isn't self-flagellation, it's about understanding how to improve. Don't be afraid to call someone back and try again.    Finally, remember: sales is not doing something to someone, it's doing something for someone.   Key Takeaways   When you take a step back and look at every aspect of business, you begin to notice that mistakes are necessary.    Sales is a vulnerable practice—don't make it personal.   People don't buy the “thing,” they buy the result the “thing” is going to provide.   Put the script down and give yourself permission to mess up.   Links   https://successfulmindpodcast.com/ @stephtuss

The company's mission is to help entrepreneurs, experts, and self-employed professionals gain the confidence and find the right mindset to increase their revenue, turning their endeavors into seven- and eight-figure ventures. Prior to her work with Life Is Now, Steph was a school teacher turned entrepreneur who built and sold her first business by the age of 33. She has a passion for helping others create their vision mixed with solid business strategy nuts and bolts. Finding Her First Business Mentor Steph was following Allie Brown, and she was doing this program with David Nagel. "The first time I heard David speak and it was like an arrow right through my forehead. When you hear the truth, you know, that you're hearing the truth and I just couldn't get enough." Hiring a coach, she felt that she needed a switch in her business. Selling her business to another practitioner in the area, Steph decided to move on to something new. David hired her to work in his company. Giving Yourself Permission as a Female Steph says about societal expectations on females, “It's a huge lesson that's taught to girls. Make everybody happy and sacrifice yourself. What you want doesn't matter. Your worth is determined by how many people you can help and what you can do for other people.” I see it all the time on sales calls. If women would give themselves permission to want what they want, but they're waiting for someone to give them permission. You need to give permission to yourself. Listen in to find out how to climb the corporate ladder and how Steph navigates decision-making as CEO of her company. In this episode, I dive into how to be an effective CEO, including: Tips for hiring your sales team Goal setting with your team for your company How to create a work culture of safety The importance of making mistakes Why you need to take ultimate responsibility for what happens in your company Giving yourself permission to say no to others and yes to yourself For more information, visit the show notes at https://www.amandaabella.com/company-culture-and-lessons-from-a-female-ceo-with-steph-tuss

What I see practitioners struggling with the most is actually getting into the sales conversation - making the phone calls, reaching out or making the offer. There are stories in your mind that says ‘I'm bothering people' or ‘they're going to think I'm salesy'. The truth is you've got to flip that.
