Getting rest isn't reckless, it's trying to push through that is. That constant drive to demonstrate productivity is virtue signaling of the toxic kind.  Root cause: perfectionism. Tap into this episode to learn about the hidden traits of perfectionism that are making it so hard to calm down. You might think perfectionists are tightly wound OCD types. Not true. If you have any of these traits - competitive, controlling, indecisive, judgemental, overproducing, procrastination, underconfident - you suffer from perfectionism Perfectionists abandon their big dreams focusing instead on details and procedures. Task completion masquerades as accomplishment. Done is always better than perfect. Embrace forward momentum knowing you can course correct as you go. Adjacent industries hold the key to practice innovation. Seeing the issues through another point of view moves us past the constraints of business as usual. When are determination, loyalty, persistence not virtues? When you're deploying them in a no-win situation. There are more landmines like this than you might think in your career landscape.  In today's episode, you'll learn how behavioral economics is keeping you stuck in situations that are aging like milk. Know when having grit is worth the payoff and when it's wasting your time. The more time, money or effort you invest, the more you feel responsible for achieving  success, and the less likely you are to abandon what's not working. When you feel like you should keep trying, also consider the cost of a missed opportunity. What didn't you do, explore, discover because you're pouring resources down the drain? What did you put at risk in terms of your stress level? Your health, your well being? Make sure that your expectations are realistic and clearly communicated Don't get so emotionally invested that you can't walk away. Think about milestones and success measures and have a plan for what happens if they aren't met. Ask "what's the best that could happen?" Then decide if that answer is good enough. Happy International Women's Day!  We celebrate this year's theme by hearing from an architect and small business owner who has built her own success on the motto of showing up even when it's uncomfortable. Learn how this strategy led to building powerful networks and big opportunities. Networks are a critical way to meet and be mentored by people who share your perspective and have perhaps overcome some of your current challenges. Nothing is ever wasted- take inventory of the skills, experience and clarity about your preferences you gained even doing work you didn't love. Then. put those skills to use in work you do love. Stop accepting the premise of all or nothing in your career. You can make other choices if you ask for a different way of working that supports your well being. Women often won't show up in environments that are hostile to them, but you can't change anything if you don't get involved. You don't have to prove yourself by being everything to everybody. Women in Construction: The challenge of being heard

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2025 18:47

According to a recent Jobsite survey respect is the number one issue named by women in the construction industry with most explaining that lack of respect shows up as not being heard. If you are in or adjacent to the AEC industry, and you are a woman, you can probably relate. Let's stop being available for this tired trope. When disrespect becomes a pattern, you can start to  assume negative intentions and carry a lot of anger and resentment around. Feeling unheard either leads you to withdraw or be more aggressive. That aggressiveness then gets labeled as being too emotional, drowning out the substance of what you are saying in a tired narrative. Engage your audience by asking questions and providing information cliffhangers. Invite others to share their thoughts about what you said so that they process it in the moment. Accept that as a leader, you need to be clear and take those that resonate along with you. Leave behind those that don't. While you might think that the status quo is a safe place to be, industry disruptors are making it the most dangerous thing to do. Disruptors address pain points and bring an organizational perspective, not just a project perspective. This means applying design to our clients business and budget in a way we don't typically think about. Inspiration is what keeps you focused, even when you encounter setbacks. It's how you focus on what you learn by overcoming an obstacle instead of seeing the obstacle as a signal you're on the wrong path. Being the person who (fill in the blank with your biggest dream) aligns you with your next right action. When you feel lost or discouraged, just ask yourself what the person who... would do. Are you making progress towards your career goals, or excuses? Most of us have really great intentions...but all the little things in life, all the obligations, all the things we have to do first get in the way. Newsflash: success is about momentum, not prerequisites. While you can't magically go from 0 to 60 and achieve a big goal in one fell swoop, there are always aligned actions you can take today. These stepping stones keep you moving down the path. All those prerequisites (which have their own subsets of prerequisites) are obstacles that halt your momentum and keep you standing still. Find a role model and ask them about their moments of truth and how they pushed past doubts and made time to achieve their success. Make it non-negotiable that you make progress. Prioritize just 2 hours a day and you will stay motivated and start seeing results. Aspire to be "the person who" makes a difference. In this episode, I answer a question from the Architecting community about negativity. As a leader, you have to deal with situations that can be downright adverse at times.  Here's why talking about it isn't a bad thing. Your brain is hardwired for negative bias as a survival instinct, so we naturally see what's wrong before what's right. That can be leveraged for good as it can paint a more complete picture. It can also be demoralizing and seen as a way to shut something down. See a challenge instead of a problem. How can you be resourceful about meeting the challenge? What opportunities is it giving you to learn or hone your skill set? What holes in your work is it allowing you to fix? Build on what you are learning instead of shutting it down by saying yes and instead of no but... Stop fighting.  Fighting relies on polarizing the situation, making the other party wrong. Instead, assume positive intent. This let's you build on feedback instead of proving you are right. Conflict is a growth. It lets us consider a more diverse point of view as well as to see how we can improve. We can't do that if we are relentlessly positive and ignore anything we don't agree with. Make a career dashboard to understand your own rhythms and patterns. Fill in the gaps using this self knowledge. Your career has two major phases. The early part is a doing phase wher eyou acquire technical skills. The later part is the leading phase is about holding vision and sharing your expertise. Any situation where resources like a promotion, raise, leadership role, positive attention, etc. are scarce can spawn it. Jealousy uses confirmation bias as a weapon. When someone is jealous, they become blind to a person's good qualities and hyper fixated on their shortcomings. You can use Jealousy as a mirror. When you understand what activates it, you can gain a lot of clarity about the big picture and interpersonal dynamics. Comparisons with others give Jealousy superpowers. Comparisons to your past selves gives you superpowers as you appreciate how far you've come. Remember to factor in personal priorities so you see your whole life, not just your work life. Conflict shouldn't produce a trauma response, but it so often does. If you find yourself fighting back like a vigilante hero, caving in while you silently stew, or running away from the issue (and people), you need to develop some better skills.  Listen in to learn more. We all have different ways of responding to conflict based on how comfortable we are with encountering it. When it feels adversarial, a healthy response is hard to summon. When we believe in something, it's difficult not to get emotionally attached and feel personally attacked when that cause isn't accepted by others. Collaborative conflict handling helps to move past assumptions about the other party and move towards a better understanding of the issues underlying a position taken. Every accomplishment deserves to be celebrated. By recognizing what's special and savoring it, you uplevel your point of view and can see even more ways to change the world while living your best life. Instead of worrying about whether you are worthy of a recognition, see it as a starting point not a destination. You now have agency to make an even greater impact. People who always hinge their happiness on the condition of a what they haven't done instead of what they have are on a hella future trip where success is never achievable. Know the difference between work you want to do, and work you are able to do. Offering a specific service to a specific audience helps you increase sales to your ideal clients. Industry specialization is what gets you hired and helps you recruit a great team. Your differentiator is your technical expertise and marketing is how you make clients aware of it. Expertise is marketed through writing, speaking and networking. Think about how you can do each of these proactively when you aren't selling. Clients seek information sometimes years before they are ready to hire. In your marketing, speak to the "one person" who is your ideal client. Steffi Reyes-Thomas shares how she embarked on a path of climate advocacy and holistic design that has pushed her past what she thought she would ever be able to do. Ask and educate- be willing to take a stand and call out the issues others may either not be aware of or not know that have the power to change. Find a community - the support as well as ways to collaborate, innovate and practice will 10x anything you will ever do on your own. Be willing to make yourself uncomfortable or you will never be motivated to take the big risks you need to to make the difference you feel called to make. Put yourself in a space to move past what you believe you can do. Space creates a precedent for living and we create space. Host a climate cafe and gain empathy for how others feel on the issue. look to unite not fight and foster empowerment and collaboration. How to Overcome Negative Bias

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2024 24:43

Just because negative bias is a survival mechanism hardwired into your biology doesn't mean it's serving you. That's because the things you fear in modern life are a threat to your ego not your life. Listen in to learn how to train your brain to tell the difference so you can ditch lack based thinking and start thriving. A sign you're experiencing negative bias is a desire to fix something you fell isn't working "right." That focus on struggle and lack keeps you from seeing what is working right and celebrating the wins. Fear of being judged causes you to do and say what you think will make someone else happy. That is a self betrayal and it creates an inauthentic connection - a facade it takes energy to maintain while denying your own fulfillment and happiness. Fear of someone else failing causes you to micromanage their life. That deprives the person from learning about healthy failure and from their own growth. Fear of your own failure keeps you focused on maintaining what you have instead of getting what you want. Overcome negative bias by making the desired outcome (not your ego) the star of the show. Forging new paths doesn't require special skills or experience to get started.  Graciela Carrillo shares her inspiring story of becoming an advocate for women, minorities, immigrants and young professionals in the architecture community. You don't make an impact by yourself. Build a container for others who care about an issue to join you. Together you inspire each other. Decide what you're passionate about. Find the data and use the numbers to show where and how you can make a difference (as well as the results once you take action). You qualify yourself. Say yes to things that matter to you because you bring value not just through expertise, but through the network you can build, people you can inspire, and message you can spread. Just telling your story will inspire others. Act in an organic way according to your priorities and opportunities will arise. Be willing to look at multiple scales and formats for sharing a message. If you only take wellness seriously when you are on the brink of a mental or physical health breakdown, that's not self care- it's repair.  How about you make living your best life a non-negotiable? Listen to learn how. Pay attention to what you say you'd like to do ...one day. Often those are the things you need to prioritize in the here and now. Putting your happiness in the future stifles your desires, blunts your intuition and keeps your needs unmet. Create our own conditions to thrive. Understand your needs and be clear about the importance of them being met. You deserve to thrive- which means you need to walk away from people and situations that aren't a good fit and find a community that will respect, celebrate and challenge you to grow. No one ever found success running themselves ragged to meet other people's expectations. We defer our happiness because we secretly fear that is will change us but our well being is tied to our personal growth.   Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review Stay Inspired, Angela Join the architecting community: YouTube, Instagram,  LinkedIn, Clubhouse, Facebook Interested in sponsoring a show or having me as a guest on your podcast or community? You wouldn't keep throwing money into repairing an old car. So why waste so much of your time and talent into a career that's past it's pull date? Instead of arguing for your limitations and pulling out that practical list of all the reasons to play it safe, start living ingeniously. Identify the obstacles: What are you avoiding or procrastinating about doing? How are you compromising to make others happy? Where are you afraid to lose control? Who are you avoiding having a hard (but honest) talk with? Why are you not meeting your own expectations? Living ingeniously means facing adversity as a challenge to overcome instead of a signal you don't deserve to have an experience.
