More great examples of classic audio horro you can find online Steve is also a great comic book writer who made stories Like Uncle Sam and Marvels with Alex Ross
Sneak into any comic book geek's home, and you'll probably find copies of Marvels and Kingdom Come. What about Uncle Sam, though? The series hit shops in 1997 from DC's Vertigo label, and it sparked provocative thought from those who read it, but for whatever reason, it did not resonate as soundly within the direct market crowd as Alex Ross' more recognizably superheroic collaborations. It's time to reconsider Uncle Sam, just in time. We're months away from a critical American election as of this writing. The stakes are high. Our fears are even more so. Democracy is under threat and as fragile as it always has been. There is the America we tell people about and the America we actually live inside. There is the dream, and there are the dreamers. Uncle Sam, written by Steve Darnall and illustrated by Alex Ross, challenges its readers to accept our America and its violent history while encouraging us to shape it into what we want it to be. Yes, it's depressing to encounter a tale published in 1997 that's relevant to 2024 readers. The depression is the point. Democracy is a neverending battle; the only cure for exhaustion and apathy is action. Uncle Sam is what filmmaker Boots Riley would call a "rallying cry." Let's circle it, make community, and do something. Hope is not passive; it's active. We're beyond delighted to have Alex Ross back on the podcast this week. This time, he's joined by his writing partner, Steve Darnall, and we dig deep into Uncle Sam. What was their compulsion to explore this icon, why are they fighting to bring their book back into bookstores, and how would they write Uncle Sam today? In our introduction, we also celebrate the life of artist John Cassaday, who left us far too soon at 52. Cassaday profoundly impacted our early comic reading relationship, bringing us together and launching our Graphic Novel Book Club, which we consider Comic Book Couples Counseling Version 1.0. The artist represents the best of what this medium can do, and his legacy lives on in us, his readers, and those who create in his wake. Our heart breaks for his friends and his family, and we offer them our love and gratitude for sharing John with us while they could. Uncle Sam is now available from Abrams Comic Arts and DC's Black Label. You can find Alex Ross on his Website, Twitter, and Instagram. "Alex Ross' work is really like outstanding community theater” - Steve Darnall and Alex Ross join me to talk about the rerelease of their groundbreaking policital graphic novel, Uncle Sam as well as Alex's Fantastic Four: Full Circle. "Timed for this year's election, UNCLE SAM by Steve Darnall and Alex Ross makes its return after nearly a decade of being out of print. It's a vibrant, hallucinatory tour of modern America—the story of a star–spangled, ragged vagrant named Sam who is guided by the voices in his head and his own fractured memories. Absorbed by history–traveling visions of America's dark past, Uncle Sam struggles to remember his true identity and piece together the scattered clues of his own experiences in this deep and thoughtful look at America's checkered past." Alex Ross studied illustration at the American Academy of Art, then honed his craft as a storyboard artist before entering the comics field. His miniseries Marvels opened a wider acceptance for painted comics. In 1996 he produced the equally successful Kingdom Come for DC Comics. Ross is the writer/artist of the award winning Fantastic Four: Full Circle. Steve Darnall first worked with Alex Ross on the Human Torch story that served as the inspiration for the award-winning 1993 series Marvels. Steve served as a consultant on the movie Being the Ricardos and Ken Burns's documentary Country Music. He is also the editor of Nostalgia Digest magazine, and the host of two weekly radio shows dedicated to the golden age of radio. Nostalgia Digest https://www.nostalgiadigest.com/

It's the week of July 4th, and so on this episode of The Comics Alternative the Two Guys with PhDs pay homage to the stars and stripes…in comics! Yes, that's right dear patriotic listener: this week Andy and Derek are focusing only on American-themed comics, new as well as not-so-new. They begin by looking at new recent books where the American project stands front and center. First, they discuss Manifest Destiny, Vol. 1: Flora and Fauna, by Chris Dingess, Matthew Roberts, and Owen Gieni (Image Comics). Both of the guys are bowled over by this first collection and see the series as a great example of American gothic. Next, they turn their attention to the new work by Ilan Stavans and Lalo Alcaraz, A Most Imperfect Union: A Contrarian History of the United States (Basic Books). While the guys applaud the creators' intentions of creating an alternative or oppositional history, they're not convinced that the book lives up to its title. In short, they're hard pressed to find much that is contrary in this contrarian history. But then, after discussing these two new titles, they highlight several of their favorite American-centered comics from years gone by (and some others that are more recent). And what a varied list it is. Andy mentions the following:Strange Fruit, Vol. 1: Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History, by Joel Christan Gill (Fulcrum Publishing); American Flagg!, by Howard Chaykin (Image Comics); Saga of the Swamp Thing, by Alan Moore and Stephen Bessetti (DC Comics); Shade the Changing Man, by Peter Milligan and Chris Bachalo (Vertigo/DC Comics). And Derek briefly discusses several other American-themed titles: Lewis and Clark, by Nick Bertozzi (First Second); The Big Lie, by Rick Veitch and Gary Erskine (Image Comics); R. Crumb's America, by Robert Crumb (Last Gasp); Uncle Sam, by Steve Darnall and Alex Ross (Vertigo/DC Comics). They could have go on and on with other, similar titles, but there's only so much you can pack into a single week's show. So fire up the grill, light up those fireworks, and pledge your allegiance to The Comics Alternative on its special Independence Day episode!
Andy and Derek are back at Lone Star Comics in Plano, TX, and this month they're talking about American-themed comics with the scheduling manager of the shop and good friend of the show, Shea Hennum. Since this is the month of Independence Day, the Two Guys with PhDs thought it would be a great opportunity to focus on comics about the United States, its history, its culture, and its people. Among the many comics they discuss are Harvey Pekar's American Splendor, Steve Darnall and Alex Ross's Uncle Sam, John Ridley and Georges Jeanty's The American Way, Howard Chaykin's American Flagg, Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Preacher, Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams's Green Lantern/Green Arrow comics of the 1970s, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, the Marvel event Civil War, the various incarnations of Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters, and Paul Pope comics. They also talk about other kinds of comics, such as Adventure Time, Brandon Graham's Prophet (which Derek does like, thank you very much), Frank Young and David Lasky's The Carter Family, Garth Ennis's Fury MAX, and erotic comics, among others. They also give their two cents on the recent announcements on the acquisition of Archaia by Boom! Studios and on Kitchen Sink joining forces with Dark Horse. And as an extra added bonus, you get to hear Shea, Andy, and Derek describe what they plan to do for the July 4th holiday (nothing exciting, really). The Two Guys with PhDs also name the winner of their July contest and announce the theme of next month's Lone Star Comics discussion and giveaway: all-age comics. So be sure to check back in August for that episode!

Writer and radio broadcaster Steve Darnall joins us to talk about his past works in comics. Steve worked in the fringe genres as the comics market struggled to survive after the speculation era went bust. You'll hear about his collaboration with Alex Ross on the 2 part UNCLE SAM prestige series , to his parody of classic romance comics for Slave Labor Graphics and his own companmy Funny Valentine. We also talk about Steve's current job hosting 2 radio shows which present classic Old Time Radio programs Those Were The Days and Yesterday USA, where he puts a historical context while presenting dramas comedies and documentaries made from the 1930s-1950s. As opposed to a nostalgic "Remember When" angle that older hosts use for a geritatric audience, Steve's show is one of discovery for a younger generation who come to these programs with a fresh perspective. Then we talk about the radio superheroes some of which predate the 1938 debut of Superman. Darnall talks about the origins of The Lone Ranger and Green Hornet, created by Detroit radio station WXYZ owner Geoge W Trendle and writer Fran Striker. We also look at the 1940 Superman radio serial. You'll learn how many of the common phrases and plot points of the comics originated on radio like Jimmy Olson, kryptonite, and the infamous lines from Metropolis citizens "Look, up in the sky ..." .
