My guest today is Erica Jenkins! She has over 30,000 hours in B2B Enterprise SaaS, heading up Product, UX, and GTM teams for 15 years from startup to scale over $100 million on a global MarTech platform, which gives me a different perspective on technology. In 2009, Erica co-founded Expion, a bootstrapped social media management SaaS platform that enabled B2C brands to engage and measure their paid, earned, and owned marketing campaigns. Sysomos, a market leader in social listening, acquired Expion in 2015. I spearheaded the repackaging of the combined platform to bring 3 new solutions to market, which was again acquired in 2018 by Meltwater. From 2018 to 2021, the marketing of SaaS product lines generated 200% revenue growth. In 2021, Erica was recruited by Crayon's founder and CEO after their Series B round to transform the product and engineering organization to shift into a PLG motion. “For fast-growing companies, marketing powered by storytelling is a recipe for marketing success.” — Mark Evans In this podcast session, I had the opportunity to speak with Mark Evans about brand storytelling, which is the topic of his latest book Marketing Spark. Specifically, how marketers and business leaders can ignite their marketing by embracing the power of storytelling to produce better results. For those not familiar with Mark, he is a marketing consultant, entrepreneur, and writer who has been telling stories for more than 25 years. He makes marketing work for fast-growing companies...and for companies that are looking to grow faster. Mark has helped more than 100 companies with marketing that accelerated their growth. Before starting his business, ME Consulting, in 2008, Mark was an award-winning technology journalist with the National Post, Globe & Mail, Bloomberg News and South China Post. At the height of the dot-com boom (in hindsight, not the best timing!), he co-founded a startup, Blanketware, that plunged Mark head-first into the world of entrepreneurship. With a passion and fascination for startups, Mark went on to work for three of them: b5media, PlanetEye and Sysomos. Mark writes a blog (www.markevans.ca/blog) about marketing and produces one of Canada’s most popular newsletters for entrepreneurs and marketers. He speaks frequently and offers workshops about marketing strategy, messaging and storytelling. When Mark manages to tear himself away from the keyboard, he is an avid ice hockey and tennis player, craft beer aficionado and intrepid traveller. Mark, his wife, Pamela, their three children and their dog Max, live in Toronto, Canada. Worry About the Information Not the Format

More than ever, businesses, especially big B2B companies, need to create content. And they're trying to find creative and interesting ways to create that content, oftentimes tapping into the knowledge of their own employees.   The problem they encounter is that the engineer or the artist or whoever holds the knowledge is not interested in writing a blog post or shooting a video for the company marketing efforts.   Instead of relying on them, worry about getting the content first, and worry about the format second.   Get the information out of the person's head however you can and then take that information to create content on your own.    There's a company called Backbone Media that got people on the phone and interviewed them about 2015 trends. They then took those telephone interviews and created blog posts and videos out of them. This way, the people being interviewed didn't have to worry about writing anything or sending any tweets. All they had to do was get on the phone and talk for a couple minutes.    Another example of this idea is what we do here with the Jay Today show. We create 8 pieces of content out of the Jay Today show, and I outlined our process on the Convince & Convert blog last week: http://www.convinceandconvert.com/content-marketing/how-to-make-8-pieces-of-content-from-1-piece-of-content/   SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/jaybaer00   SPROUT SOCIAL SHOUT OUT   Amber Naslund (ambercadabra), co-author of The NOW Revolution, now works at Sysomos, and will be the co-host of a new podcast that we're launching called Content Pros.
