In this week's episode, we take a look at the hottest trend in dark matter candidates - Primordial Black Holes. They're like black holes, only smaller (in some cases)! Join us as we see what all the fuss is about. Kiersten shares a story of a black hole playing video games inside a star and glitching out of the mainframe, while Shashank makes his a[s]b debut with an explosive transient conundrum that *might* explain the mystery of dark matter once and for all. We round off with a discussion about our favourite pet dark matter theories and the merits of direct experimental searches. On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul and Rebecca Wheele are joined by Sally Hooper to talk about the children's book ‘In-Betweeny-Weeny', that they have co-created within World Game-Changers, the story behind the book and what they hope to achieve through telling the story. The book can be found on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Betweeny-Weeny-Sally-Hooper/dp/1782229809?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER Or the World Game-Changers website: https://worldgamechangers.org/book-mastering-the-game-of-life/ KEY TAKEAWAYS The story was written by Sally a long time ago when her now 22-year-old son was 3. He was a very hyper verbal, intelligent boy with an expansive vocabulary. She was in bed-rest while pregnant with her daughter. This was quite a big adjustment and he started stuttering. I wrote the story for him to help him through that time in his life when things weren't normal and to teach him some patience, self-acceptance as well as optimism and hope that he'd get through this and be fine. I already had experience with work with children in my professional life, so I was familiar with disfluency, saw it unfolding and got him the help that he needed really early on. It also came in handy that my sister is a speech and language pathologist, so between her, I and the therapy he was receiving from another speech and language pathologist, all that intervention did the trick. He's made a full recovery since. While the story was written about my son and disfluency it transcends that. I simply talked about a “struggle” that the child is having, so it's useful for lots of different kids with lots of situations that can arise. The take-home message is: You're unconditionally loved whether you're making a mistake or doing things just right and everything in between. It's a nurturing, fun way to make an emotional connection with your child and let they know they're unconditionally loved which is an important message for any child to hear. The co-creation has been as fulfilling as any other part of this project. It's been a labour of love, but in the most lovely way. It's been a highlight of my life in the last couple of years, jumping on Zoom calls with Rebecca and others at World Game-Changers. You're bringing a children's book to life with fanciful words and illustrations, how could that not bring a smile to your face? BEST MOMENTS ‘Like anything with children, early intervention is the key to turning things around.'‘The book was a way of having a special connection with my son to let him know that it's OK, we're going to work through this.'‘I've always found writing to be very cathartic and healing – writing and making soup!'‘In writing this story the three of us have talked about the importance of the parent or grownup raising a child to be a model and shaping a child's behaviour by modelling appropriate behaviour.' The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is the hospital ward where no new parents ever hope to be. Though a safe haven for babies, the NICU becomes a temporary home to those who require immediate medical care, such as preterm or premature babies (born before 37 weeks of pregnancy), congenital anomalies (i.e., birth defects), and infections. According to the March of Dimes, a non-profit organization championing the fight against preventable maternal, preterm, and infant death, around 19.5% of babies are collectively born preterm in a given week in the United States. Premature birth can result in developmental delays and impairments in respiration, hearing, and vision, with data showing that it accounts for almost 36% of infant deaths from 2017-2019. Meanwhile, 3% of babies are affected by birth defects, accounting for 20% of infant deaths. What are the risk and preventable factors for preterm birth? What are the most frequent birth anomalies seen? How does the NICU team support babies and their parents and/or guardians when they leave the hospital? We are joined today by Dr. Kate Rubey, a board-certified neonatologist, NICU attending physician, and neonatal research fellow. She received her BA in Microbiology from Miami University in 2009, MA in Medical Science from Loyola University in 2010, MD from Rush Medical College in 2014, Pediatrics residency at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in 2017, and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in 2020. The paper gets published without any apparent adult review, and Mr. Feeny is now known as Mr. Weeny. Cory now has a tough decision to make. Bible Text: 1 Samuel 16:1-13 A lot of us feel like we don't measure up. We aren't good looking enough, we don't have any discernable or admirable talents and we just get passed over for the things that our hearts seem to desire. It's discouraging. It's especially discouraging when scientific studies prove that good looking people get more opportunities, better jobs and even better restaurant service then all of us regular looking folk do. The whole world is based on meritocracy and it always has been. Back in Samuel's time (pretty interesting guy if you want to look him up), people voted on their leaders based on what they looked like. The bigger and stronger and brawnier you were, the better chances you had of being hailed the leader or King. Sounds familiar right? We still do these things today. But God truly and honestly does not give a whip about what you look like or what the world thinks of the gifts you have been given. And I know, saying 'it's what's inside that counts' is pretty cheesy, but over and over again we see God choosing the lesser and the little ones. He chose David, the youngest and smallest of his brothers to be King over Israel. He chose Moses, who wasn't the greatest public speaker (Exodus 4:10-13) to represent and lead his people. Look at this verse from 1 Corinthians 1:27: But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong." The things of this world, looks and talent and all that stuff, mean nothing to God. Heck, even Jesus, the Son of God Himself, was not an especially good looking guy. You'd think God would have made Him at least a bit hunky, but nope, check out Isaiah 53:2. What does God care about? God cares about character. He cares about what you do and who you are when nobody is looking. Character takes up the raw material of nature and temperament and weaves these into a strong, well knit texture, of a fully moralized person. Character is your core and your moral sense and that's what God is looking at. It is developed over time through the moral guidance of God's word and the proper teaching of those around us. It's what you should be raising your kids to have and it's the number one thing that you should look for in a spouse. Moral, Godly character. So you say, okay, great, I know God cares about character. And I also know and believe He died for me. But I can't find a husband or wife, I'm only making half of what some of my friends are making and I just kinda suck. Except if you seek after God with all of your whole being, that's what actually matters in this life. That's when God blesses you with the things He knows you need. God chose David as he was a man after God's own heart. Focus on that, pray about that, take your worries and concerns to God. He knows it's hard to get out of yourself and focus on others, He knows you're going to probably obsess about trying not to obsess about all the things you're lacking as a person in this world. Take those concerns to Him and then turn your eyes to the things that build good moral character and your life will absolutely change. I don't want much. I just want a little bit. Written by Rosco N. Gordon III in 1959. "Just a Little Bit" was developed when Gordon was touring with West Coast blues artist Jimmy McCracklin. According to Gordon, McCracklin started to write the song and agreed that Gordon could finish it, with both of them sharing the credit. Gordon later presented a demo version to Ralph Bass at King Records, who was reportedly uninterested in the song. Gordon then approached Calvin Carter at Vee-Jay Records, who agreed to record it. Meanwhile, Federal Records, a King Records subsidiary, released a version of "Just a Little Bit" by R&B singer Tiny Topsy (1959 Federal 45-12357), with songwriting credit given to Ralph Bass and several others unknown to Gordon. The Tiny Topsy song, featuring a pop-style arrangement with background singers and flute, did not reach the record charts. Elvis Presley (1973) Animals (1977) Freddie King (1973) Jerry Lee Lewis (1973) Etta James (1968) Dave Berry (1964) Liverpool Five (1966) Gene Simmons (1964) Magic Sam Blues Band (1969) Mitch Ryder and the The Detroit Wheels (1966) Rory Gallagher (1975) Rosco Gordon (1959) The original. I find this version has a swing to it that the others don't possess. As if they took the part that didn't swing and emphasized THAT because it was just easier. Roy Head (1965) Slade (1974) I like Slade, but this is the worst version here. The Undertakers (1964) Them (1965) Also a pretty bad version. Tiny Topsy (1959) Note the additional composers. Tony Worsley and the Blue Jays (1965) Homer & Jethro - Gonna Send 'Em Home (1964) Nobody sent anybody home. Janis Joplin - Half Moon (1969) Written by John and Joanna Hall. How exciting it must have been! John Hall - Voyagers (1978) With James Taylor and Carly Simon on backing vocals. With all that star power, how could this fail? Didn't even reach the top 200. John Hall - Nu Toone (1970) John Hall Band - Crazy (1982) Kangaroo - I Never Tell Me Twice (1968) John Hall's band before Orleans. La Bionda - I Wanna Be Your Lover (1980) JUST TAKE MY MONEY!!! Orleans - Please Be There (1973) John Hall - Power (1979) More Carly and JT. No sales, but it must have been nice to have your song sung at the No Nukes thingie. Stevie Wonder - As (1976) Genesis - Behind The Lines/Duchess (1980) I distinctly remember the Duke tour booklet saying to "expect some surprises". Selling out was a surprise, I admit.
