By the late 90s, rap was the world's pop music. The money was flowing, creating hip-hop moguls and welcoming in the Bling Era. But as hip-hop went mainstream and gained commercial success, the rap music topping the charts had begun to largely shed its political messaging in favor of music that was mostly about the trappings of success: sex, partying, and money. That is, until pressure mounted and backlash to a Republican government brought politics back to hip-hop once more, leading to the mobilization of a generation and the first hip-hop president: Barack Obama.Trymaine Lee is joined by: rapper Master P, stic of the hip-hop duo Dead Prez, rapper & activist Tef Poe, Vote or Die's Alexis McGill Johnson, political organizer Rosa Clemente, and writer Joan Morgan. Real estate development conjures up images of gentrification with sleek buildings and polished store fronts often built under the guise of urban revitalization. Far too often, these projects displace long-standing residents and communities of color. What would it look like if real estate development were led by the people who already live in the neighborhood? In this episode, Laura interviews South Bronx native Majora Carter who decided to stay where she grew up and rewrite the playbook for neighborhood development. A self-described “chick from the hood… with zero experience in real estate,” she's a MacArthur “genius award” recipient, owner of the hip hop themed Boogie Down Grind Cafe that has survived and even thrived during Covid, thanks to a bit of help from Beyoncé. Carter is author of Reclaiming Your Community: You Don't Have to Move Out Of Your Neighborhood To Live In A Better One, just out from Berrett-Koehler. Fifty years after the death of Rev Dr Martin Luther King, and in the era of campaigns such as Black Lives Matter, how are black churches relevant in the fight for social justice today? Two-time Emmy Award winning presenter Sherri Jackson asks a local audience and a panel of speakers about the role of Christianity in America's new civil rights movements. Sherri is joined by the next generation of activists and by those who were part of the original civil rights movement at 16th Street Baptist Church, an iconic city location which survived a 1963 bombing by members of the Ku Klux Klan and the murder of four young girls. Taking part in the discussion is the Rev Dr Bernard Lafayette, a civil rights activist and authority on non-violent social change, who was with Dr King on the day he was assassinated; Tef Poe, rapper and activist; Rev Eva Melton, activist, minister, and community organiser; Rev Arthur Price, the pastor of 16th Street Baptist Church; Laveeda Morgan Battle, lawyer, and member of St Paul United Methodist church; student and young activist Justin Smith. We hear about the #BLM movement but rarely about its artists. Ferguson, Missouri native Tef Poe shares his music, talks about how his life changed the day Michael Brown was murdered by Darren Wilson, what happened on the front line of Ferguson and how that city's changed after a year. Tef Poe also has BARS. Like he once said, "this ain’t your grandparents’ civil rights movement." His album 'War Machine III' is available on itunes now.
A special rebroadcast of In The Streets with Beverley Smith: #BlackLivesMatter at PantheaCon 2015 (Ep 17) "Week 3 of Black History Month brings news and reviews of PantheaCon 2015, an annual convention of Pagan, Heathen, Wiccan, Indigenous, spiritual, and magical people who gather for workshops, rituals, caucuses, and presentations. Find out how pagans of color are addressing the needs of the social justice in the Black community in the context of the pagan community. The weekend was not without controversy, and thus opened the door to conversations, hostility, microaggressions, but also a deeper understanding and acknowledgement of solidarity where it exists. Also the news, On This Day in Black History, music from Lauryn Hill, Bernice Johnson, Tef Poe, Jamal Graham, Big Mountain, and more. And please check out Jamaal Graham's video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEOBJvz96nQ. "

Tef Poe has stated that "my grandparents endured this type of treatment so we wouldn't have to". So if you are young, black and poor in America today are you at war with the police?
