Homing instinct in cats 9:45 #cats #catfacts #catlovers Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - The Mesopotamians and ancient Egyptians were the first to domesticate cats. Since these cultures were dependent on agriculture, the enemies of their livelihood were the animals that ate their crops. - Since Egyptians thought of cats so highly, they accessorized their pets with jewels. The richer and more aristocratic the owner, the bigger the jeweled collar their cat wore. - In ancient Egypt, anyone found guilty of killing a cat, even accidentally, was sentenced to death. - Egyptians thought that Bastet manifested physically as a cat and protected Egypt from invasion, just like a cat protects its owner's home. - In Slavic mythology, it was believed that a barn cat named Ovinnik was the protector of crops and livestock. - It was only around the Middle Ages when cat folklore turned dark. During this time, cats were thought to be accomplices of witches and black magic. - You've likely heard about the knack cats have for always landing on their feet no matter how far they fall. This is called a “righting reflex,” - Cats can't taste sweet foods, but they do have an extra organ that allows them to taste scents in the air. Apparently, that's why they stare at you sometimes with their mouths open! - Cats have outstanding balance that's only made better by their long tails. - Cats are carnivores, which (aside from cleaning themselves) is why they have that rough sandpaper tongue. It's supposed to help them clean every last morsel of flesh from an animal bone. - Cats can drink seawater. Unlike humans, cats have kidneys that can filter out the salt from seawater. - The ridges on a cat's noses are like fingerprints for people. That means that no two kitty noses are exactly alike! - Cats purr at a frequency of about 26 purrs per second. I just finished Rest by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang. I discovered this book while browsing at the Paper Moon bookstore in McGregor, Iowa. Loved this book. He covers the work, wellness, routines, and exercises of some of the all time creatives in business, politics, and even War. We focus on work and rest habits of two creatives: Scott Adams of the Dilbert comic strip and Earnest Hemingway.
George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review six films from the 1990s to 2000 that released for the first time on Blu-ray. We start with the animated "Rover Dangerfield," (1991) where Rodney Dangerfield's hallmark humor is impeccably tailored to tickle the funny bones of both kids and adults alike. Next we review the first film released by MTV Films, "Joe's Apartment," (1996) starring a young Jerry O'Connell and a host of singing cockroaches. From December we start with the excellent, "Saving Grace" (2000), a Indie darling that should not be forgotten, with standout performances from Brenda Blethyn and Craig Ferguson. We then review the romp "A Midwinter's Tale" (1995), directed by Kenneth Branagh. This mock-u-mentary style film is a delightful look behind-the-scenes of indie Shakespearean theater. We wrap up our reviews with two films released in November. First is the historical drama "Rapa-Nui" (1994) from Kevin Costner's Tig Productions and directed by Kevin Reynolds. Filmed on location on Easter Island, this story of Polynesian history is a visual and dramatic delight. And our last film is the historical romance "In Love and War" (1996) starring Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell and directed by Richard Attenborough. This beautifully shot film is based on the true-life romance of a young Earnest Hemingway and his experiences in Italy during World War I.We provide a review of each film, the restoration, and all of the extras to help you decide if you want to add it to your physical media collection.Purchase links:ROVER DANGERFIELD (1991) Blu-rayJOE'S APARTMENT (1996) Blu-raySAVING GRACE (2000) Blu-rayA MIDWINTER'S TALE (1995) Blu-rayRAPA-NUI (1994) Blu-rayIN LOVE AND WAR (1996) Blu-ray The Extras Facebook pageThe Extras Twitter Warner Archive & Warner Bros Catalog GroupOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers. When you think of creativity, what comes to mind? Maybe it's a disheveled Earnest Hemingway writing in a cafe in Spain. Or a prolific artist like Beyoncé who churns out hit after hit and sells out stadiums. But every single human being is a creative being. Creativity is about how you solve problems, how you put yourself out there and how you translate ideas into businesses. [Episode 35] Jeffrey B. Have you ever wanted to take that epic road trip to the special fishing destination you have heard so much about. Maybe you have done this and it was one of the most memorable moments of your life. David Van Wie hatched an idea to travel to some of the most fabled fly fishing destinations east of the Mississippi and then wrote a book on it. Storied Waters follows along as David chronicles 35 fly fishing destinations that have been made famous by literary giants and artists such as David Thoreau, Earnest Hemingway and Charlie Fox. It's not only a literary journey though, Storied Waters is also a fly fishing journey as David details some great locations and the flies and techniques that were proven successful.

This week, Sara Gorsky brings us the incredible true story of Josephine Baker! Born into poverty in St. Louis, Missouri in 1906, Josephine works her way up the chorus line to NYC, but the discrimination she faces at every turn drives her to Europe where France falls in love with the girl in the banana skirt. Her rise to fame is meteoric and she becomes one of the highest paid performers in all of Europe and the first Black woman in history to reach such astounding celebrity status. However, she does not stop there. Her accomplishments include incredible work as a spy for the French Resistance in WWII, adopting a "Rainbow Tribe" of children, forcing the desegregation of notorious nightclubs around the country and marching & speaking alongside Dr. MLK, Jr. at the March on Washington. Welcome to BookShook! This podcast is all about the second half of March's book, Bewilderment by Richard Powers published in 2021 (p147 "ROBBIE EVEN ENJOYED INFLATING THE BOAT" to the end if you're reading alongside). The idea of the podcast is that we'll read the first half of a book together — one that I and perhaps you have never read) and then I'll share my thoughts in part 1 of the podcast published on the second Friday of the month. And then in part 2 (published on the last Friday of the month), I'll discuss the second half of the book. We'll see together how the novel concludes and decide whether it's a book we'd recommend to a friend - or not. Of course, you don't have to read the book, you can listen to it, or just follow along without doing either since I'll be summarising what happens (but be aware! - there will be spoilers). Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods Today's insight was inspired by American short story writer, outdoorsman, and novelist who won the Pulitzer Prize (1953) and the Nobel Prize in Literature (1954) for his novel The Old Man and the Sea, Earnest Hemingway. “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.” –Ernest Hemingway As a human, you're going to experience sorrow, sadness and heartbreak. But it's how you emerge from these that determine your existence. Often, coming out stronger in the broken places is the difference between being happy, and living a life of pain. This story is part of a series of tales written by a young Earnest Hemingway. It's a “slice of life” story about the conflicting emotions in a relationship between a young couple. “The End of Something” was written when Hemingway was in his early 20s and features a recurring semi-autobiographical character, Nick Adams. The story had its roots in an early romance that began when Hemingway was in his late teens. Nick became a regular part of Hemingway's early works and is featured in our next tale which follows chronologically, “The Three Day Blow.”

Earnest Hemingway said, “Write your best, and finish what you start.” I want us to apply this to what we do, so: Do the best you can, and finish what you start Living and doing our best comes from what we are working towards. What are you working towards? Successful people are successful not because of an accomplishment, but because they were or are working towards something meaningful to them. This means success can only be defined by the individual person. If I want my podcast to hit 50,000 downloads this year, and I'm working towards that, it may not mean anything to someone who is not interested in me nor personal growth. They couldn't care less. But that cannot define me. Understand this too, that success is a process. It comes from doing our best working toward something, it is celebrated if accomplished, but it is happening and in the works when we are in the middle of going for it. I feel successful when I'm working towards the goal, so producing a video almost daily to add to the podcast increases the chances of reaching more people with my thoughts. So the working toward making the videos and talking is the small “Kaizen” accomplishments that I can look back and say that, “I've made enough videos, or podcast episodes to watch daily for an entire year!”, instead of that one video to go viral. Living your best life now is your ikigai, and every moment you reflect on you will see that the entire time has been a success. Be proud of that!
This week we stray from the typical and jump into Earnest Hemingway's classic, For Whom The Bell Tolls. Topics include The Spanish Civil War as well as war's residual effects.
The early conversation is about how BeiBei has a crash course in English for every episode of The Bridge-as she speaks Chinese for the most part and John inquires as to how she became fluent in the English language. John talks about how the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" gave him serious appreciation for the film and story, and then the discussion runs to documentaries, that connects to Ernest Hemingway, that in turn ends up with BeiBei surprising John with a conversation about his 2nd book "Every Moment Matters" that finally showed up in the mail, after a very long wait.

This week on the BrainTap Business Journal Podcast we warmly welcome superstar Mariel Hemingway. Ms. Hemingway is a well-known actress starring in films such as Manhattan, Personal Best, Star 80 and the Mean Season. She’s also the acclaimed author of “Finding My Balance: A Memoir,” “Invisible Girl,” and “Out Came the Sun: Overcoming the Legacy of Mental Illness, Addiction, and Suicide in My Family,” among others. She now focuses her energy on finding peace for herself and for people suffering from mental health disorders--something she is acutely familiar with. With seven suicides in her family, including her grandfather Earnest Hemingway and her sister Margaux Hemingway, Mariel has learned from the inside out the importance of mental health and balance in her life. She has become passionate about sharing that with the world, especially young people today who find it so difficult to separate themselves from what they see on social media. Says Hemingway in an interview, “I did suffer depression myself; it wasn’t clinical depression, but I had a genetic predisposition for it. I grew up watching a family that was completely amazing and creative but also destructive and self-medicating. All of them, they were addicts. I didn’t want to end up like that. I was on a mission.” That mission resulted in a documentary called “Running From Crazy,” which aired in 2013, and a newfound purpose in life--helping erase the stigma of mental health issues so people can get the help they need. During this time of quarantine and isolation, helping people find balance amidst the chaos is her new quest. She feels the world has become a much smaller place as people pause and regroup, and she offers tips on how to live your best life while in unique circumstances. Listen in now to hear this amazing podcast interview. It’s guaranteed to change your perspective on life and how you live it. What you’ll learn in this podcast: • How a meeting with the Dalai Lama changed her life • How to be your own guru • How to be more powerful than you believe you are • Why grounding yourself to the earth every day is vitally important • How using food as medicine and how important proper nutrition is to our bodies and minds • How she utilizes positive self-talk, including using the BrainTap daily, to produce positive results in her life and how you can do the same • We will also share exciting news about sessions Mariel will be contributing to the BrainTap library to help empower people and help with their mental health issues, avoiding anxiety and building immunity Resources: • Biography: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000446/bio • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mariel.hemingway • Twitter: @marielhemingway

De vijf favorieten van Dichter: Anthony Hamilton - Coming from where I'm from (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4LVf9qdFYA), Jay Z - D'evils (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y44gyGeXWsU), Frank Ocean - Thinkin Bout You (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4djvZ4cmYo), Lupe Fiasco - The Instrumental (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsZUSP1p20s), Toon Hermans - Op weg met jou.
Last week I shared a Grumpier Old Men clip about a man who drank, smoked and ate copious amounts of bacon… and lived to be 95. Just a reminder to don’t follow that advice. Instead, let’s talk about what you could accomplish… if you could just get “caught up”! These days, so many amazing dreams and big goals die because people spend their lives in minutiae…I freakin’ hate minutiae. Look, everybody has 24 hours in their day between midnight to midnight. POTUS, entrepreneurs who run multiple million dollar companies, stay at home mama’s… Ask any of these folks if there’s ever enough time in the day to get everything done and they’ll all tell you “NO”! So then how do certain people get so much more done in the same 24 hours than the rest of the population? The answer is this… It’s HOW you START your day. Would you like to enjoy a 26 hour day? Consider this story: Almost sixty years after his death, Earnest Hemingway is still well-known in high school and college literature courses. He was also infamous for being a very heavy drinker. I only mention that fact, because despite his wild, carousing evenings …he was disciplined to wake up between 5:30 and 6:00 in the morning. Hemingway had this to say: “I write every morning as soon after first light as possible. There is no one to disturb you and it is cool and you come to your work and warm as you write… you may go on until noon or be through before that. When you stop you are empty, and at the same time never empty but filling, as when you have made love to someone you love. Nothing can hurt you, nothing can happen, nothing means anything until the next day when you do it again. It is the wait until the next day that is hard to get through.” Wow. {{ first_name|default:'Friend' }}, your day, regardless of when you hit the gym, is WON in the morning. By getting up early and doing specific things (outlined below) your life will change, very quickly. There’s a quote I absolutely love and believe it down to my core from Sir Richard Whately… “Lose an hour in the morning, and you will spend all day looking for it.” Just last week, I had almost had a completely productive week except for Thursday. I woke up and didn’t do my workout because I didn’t feel like doing it. My entire morning routine was thrown off and I ended up literally getting NOTHING done that day. Whatever you’re doing, you can do more--with this simple shift in your routine. (Simple, not easy) Richard Branson gets up at 5am no matter where he is in the world because it gives him a head start on the rest of the world. Apple CEO Tim Cook gets up at 3:45. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in the gym by 4am every day. I personally have been getting up before 5AM every day, for the past 2 years. I do this because by the time the average American wakes up, I’ve already gotten half my work done for the day! If I’m 100% honest with you, I could never run Crazy Muscle without my morning routine... There’s more time in the day to do things I want to do. Things I would’ve previously said “I’m too busy for that.” And even if you consider yourself a night owl, I guarantee you getting up at 5 or 6 for a couple days will cure your late nights. So, if you are a brave soul, and you do want the benefit of having an extra two hours per day (the “26 hour day”), what will you do specifically, before dawn? --->I recommend a strict routine you follow each and every morning. While your best routine will be one of your own creation, the most successful people on this planet typically include some combo of these elements: Gratitude Reading Exercise (cardio) Meditation Hydration One element that’s not on ANY early riser’s list? Electronic devices. Checking email or responding to texts or “just a minute in Facebook” is definitely not something to get out of bed for. How you start your day sets the tone for the entire

“Life breaks us all”, so says Earnest Hemingway, “but many are made strong at the broken places.” The truth of this statement can be seen throughout the Scriptures not only on what we are taught but also in the lives of certain biblical characters. In this 6-week study, we will journey together through things in life that can break us and what God does in our brokenness to strengthen us and to bring beauty and joy out of our broken places. In this first podcast we will take a look at trials and see what James tells us is the reality of trials, the response we are to have to trials and the result of our response to those trials. Let’s listen as Mark Rae, Vice President of Community Development at Grace School of Theology and Executive Director of Grace Center for Spiritual Development shares with us the beauty and joy that God can bring out of trials.

This week's episode: "Hills Like White Elephants." This classic short story by Earnest Hemingway is widely considered most striking for everything that is revealed in the things are left unsaid. A man and a woman are waiting for the train to Barcelona. It is a hot afternoon. They are drinking beer at a bar and talking about the landscape, the weather, and whether or not the woman should have an abortion. Nothing is actually said about this last detail, but Hemingway's inference is as heavy as the still, hot afternoon air of the café, and his spare style allows the reader (or listener) to fill in the gaps, leaving to our imagination to resolve the deliberately open ending. This may be a short short story, but it is complex, as well as exquisitely crafted. Tune in and be transported!
