Maggie was a young, bright-eyed college student when she was first recruited as an egg donor. She eagerly signed up to donate her eggs with plans of helping families while earning some money for her future. Instead, she got stage 4 invasive ductal carcinoma, a diagnosis she is certain she acquired as a result of multiple rounds of egg donation. Her painful experience was documented in our 2015 documentary “Maggie’s Story.” After battling cancer and the completion of chemotherapy, Maggie returned to school to obtain a masters degree in relational counseling, and her focus is working with clients diagnosed with cancer and other illnesses. This June, she will celebrate five years of remission. Today, we are pleased to welcome Maggie and her parents to Venus Rising as we revisit her story and continue an important conversation about the hidden dangers of the fertility industry. This episode was originally released May 15th, 2020.For episode 46, Geoff Moes (@ThallidTosser on Twitter), Nat Moes (@GrandpaBelcher), and Josh Chapple (@joshchapple) talk with Rajah James (@rykerwilliams). Rajah is a Team Serious member and friend who organized the online Team Serious League and played in the recent Team Serious Invitational: Virtual Realm, so we’re talking to him about getting your Magic fix while dealing with physical distancing. Here’s the timestamped table of contents for your listening ease and enjoyment:01:17 – Team Serious Leagues24:10 – Enter the Virtual Realm37:47 – The Cat’s in the Vintage55:28 – Food & Drink: MTG Pub Quiz1:16:49 – OutroTotal runtime – 1:17:51 Missing: The Gathering These are weird times we’re living in. The coronavirus, as well as thoughtful public health officials and good sense, has relegated most of humanity to stay physically apart from one another to prevent the spread of a particularly virulent disease. I was thinking about it and realized I haven’t been in a building other than my own house in seven weeks. Distancing is the norm now, and that’s a problem for a tabletop card game where players square off in intimate distance, talking, and often interacting with one another’s cards. Wizards of the Coast provided the first solutions to playing Magic under quarantine with, of course, Magic Online (MTGO) and Arena. But these services might leave something to be desired for some players. Arena’s available collection won’t allow players to play Vintage (or Legacy, Old School, Modern, and so on), and while MTGO offers most of the cards, there’s still a barrier to human interaction. You can’t fully engage with your opponent: introduce yourselves when you sit down, congratulate them on a good play, or see their reaction when you have the answer or drop your big threat. It can feel sterile, like you’re one person against a machine. To overcome that, Rajah organized the Team Serious Leagues (TSL) within our group. As he describes, it’s similar to the Vintage Super League: round-robin games are played in batches over multiple weeks, and players are allowed to change decks or strategies between batches. Eventually records are compared and winners are declared. The TSL allows games to be played over any reasonable medium: webcam, MTGO, Cockatrice, even in person since it was organized before social distancing protocols were in effect. It was meant as a way to get Team Serious members to play games against one another despite there being sometimes long distances between players. Since quarantine, it’s been a relief not only for the players, who get to continue playing games and talking to people, but for other Team Serious members, who often get to watch the streamed matches and even interact with the players over the team’s chat and Discord. You can follow along too if you like. The results and decklists from the first Vintage batch are on Rajah’s website, and here are the decklists from the second batch. When the three batches are complete, someone will win these keen lands altered by Daniel Anschutz, or this “Wild Thing” Force of Will altered by Bobby Lupo. Welcome to the Machine Inspired by the TSL and compelled by the coronavirus quarantine, Andy “The Brass Man” Probasco and I started talking about hosting a virtual Team Serious Invitational (TSI). We wanted an opportunity to get people together where they could hang out online, play some Vintage, and perhaps consume some frosty cool alcoholic beverages. Just like a real TSI! The tournament itself, held Saturday May 9 in a Discord server, went surprisingly well! We had 24 players and did six rounds of Swiss plus a top-eight elimination. Vintage luminaries like Kevin Cron and Greg Hughes (Zias) showed up, and six countries were represented in almost as many time zones. There was a minor disaster at the beginning as the Discord server failed to allow video connections, but everyone moved quickly and acutely to get matches played in other formats: Zoom, Cockatrice, Whereby, and Discord DMs. It was a remarkable show of ingenuity and determination! Brass Man did some lovely, fun, insightful commentary throughout the event, adjusting on the fly to be able to show the variety of media players were using to play. Here’s what Zoom versus Cockatrice looks like, for example, as well as Brassy, keepin’ it classy. For a sense of the current Vintage environment, the Top 8 ended up with seven companions in the decklists, including two of them in one deck, played by Jimmy McCarthy. Zias won without a companion, playing Shops Vines. The full results are available on The Mana Drain, with some additional commentary and hot links. For example, for full TSI effect, Steve McGrew opted to drink a shot of Malört, as is tradition upon making Top 8. Congratulations and regrets to Steve, and congratulations to the rest of the Top 8. How Companionable Is Companion? Of course, the event was played under predictably lame-duck conditions. On May 11, Wizards of the Coast announced that in a week’s time there would be a change to the Banned & Restricted List that would include Vintage. As I mentioned, six of the Top 8 decks at the TSI:VR, and indeed many of the top-performing decks in recent Vintage Challenges online have included creatures with the companion ability, recently printed in Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. Lurrus of the Dream-Den is the main culprit, being a long-game advantage engine that happens to combo with Black Lotus very well, so it works even in a faster combo shell. The problem is that the nature of companion means that restricting Lurrus will do nothing to prevent its being a problem. A player needs only one copy, which is safely stored in their deck’s sideboard until needed. What to do? What will Wizards do to Vintage on May 18? Will the format get what will essentially be its first banning for power-level considerations? (There are other banned cards: ante cards, conspiracies, dexterity cards, and Shahrazad, all of which are banned categorically.) Will there be an effective power-level errata to make companion not work as written, or perhaps not work at all? Will all the companions be hit or just Lurrus? Could something instead be unrestricted to combat the cat menace? Will there be any consideration to Lurrus’s being used in multiple different archetypes or bringing unexpected cards into the format, like Seal of Fire and Dead Weight? If banning or errata eliminates Lurrus, will another companion follow the same path of degeneracy? We talk about the implications of these questions and why any plan might be preferable over another. It’s a complex issue surrounding complex cards. And the whole situation is exacerbated by the current global pandemic as the cards have only been released in paper in some Asian markets and online. Many players haven’t even touched a paper Lurrus! They showed up at TSI:VR and in the TSL only because these are playtest events that allow proxies. It’s such a weird conflux of situations! Anyway, we do a lot of discussing but come to no conclusions. Food & Drink: MTG Pub Quiz Part of the goal Brass Man and I put together for the TSI:VR was to have it feel like a real TSI. Part of that was making it two days, so people could start the festivities early on Friday. Encouraging people to just hang out in the chatrooms we always hang out in didn’t seem like enough, so I had the idea to put together a pub-quiz-style trivia game that would encourage both hanging out and drinking. There would be some fun questions and activities to encourage interaction, and with Discord we could do some proper trash talking. So I put together a few rounds of themed questions, designed to pass a few hours pleasantly. People drifted in and out, but we ended up with four teams of three to four players, which was perfect. I asked questions over video and was even able to put a few visual questions on screen, like the Movie Magic posters with blanked out titles that were also Magic card names (see below), or Nam Quiz Tran that was Nam’s 2018 Vintage Champs finals list with blanked out cards. And teams were able to retreat to separate Discord rooms to collaborate on answers. It worked great! We did six rounds, which I preview on the show. There was Magic trivia new and old, the movie posters and Nam’s deck, a retrospective of 1993 in honor of Magic’s birth, a lightning round where each team got to pick its own yes-or-no category, and “Drinking With Team Serious,” which we run through in its entirety on the show. I really didn’t think anyone would be able to identify one of Jaco’s custom-built cocktails by name, but here we are: the Charcnado. That’s your important food and drink lesson for this episode. Congratulations to Fernando Aguiano, Jon Hammack, and Kaleb Woodward on their dominant victory! Upcoming Events I think the only questions for discussion are going to surface around the Banned & Restricted List change on Monday. What’s going to happen there, and what will be the long-term impact? But we are planning future online Magic event since the coronavirus quarantine seems unlikely to be meaningfully lifted any time in the near future. And even if it is, we can still get together online to play Magic! June 5 there will be another MTG Pub Quiz, and June 6 will be a Middle School MTG tournament, both again held online using the Team Serious: Virtual Realm Discord server. We learned a lot about both processes last time, so I expect this to go even better. There’s no entry, and we’ll have some nice donated prizes for winners. This June event is open to all, so if you’re interested, let us know, and we’ll be planning more events in different formats in the future. Conclusion Thanks so much for listening! And thanks to Rajah for helping us talk about some positive Magic experiences in these weird dark times. We hope you enjoyed it and found it uplifting, and that you’re being safe and remaining healthy. We’ll look forward to any questions or comments here or The Mana Drain or on Twitter. You can also email us at seriousvintagepodcast@gmail.com. And don’t forget to let us know if you want to play some Middle School and be part of other online Team Serious events!

When it comes to air cargo, The International Air Transport Association (IATA) seems to be adapting a bunker mentality in 2020 as top management and other key personnel connected to air cargo are retiring in droves. Glyn Hughes, IATA Head of Cargo departs IATA in January, and Mike White, President of IATA Cargo Network Services (CNS) will depart by year’s end. Add to that the diminishing number of support staff at IATA in Geneva, including maybe all the team at CNS in Miami. Some in air cargo may feel like those “Six Characters Looking for an Author” a la Luigi Pirandello; a family of industry people left incomplete by an author who can’t finish the work for which we were conceived. This June just past – at the height of the pandemic lockdown in India – there was a quiet celebration in the Chennai-based Blue Dart Aviation family (which is part of DHL eCommerce Solutions) celebrating its 24th anniversary on June 17. Blue Dart Managing Director Tulsi Nowlakha Mirchandaney crossed a huge milestone. Heard on the radio that soon travelers could be tested for COVID-19 before boarding a flight and then after landing whilst travelling between New York City and London. The idea is to avoid that mandatory two-week confinement might encourage short stay business and pleasure travel. Florida’s airports are doing rapid tests and the prospect of continued innovative thinking will certainly be better than the punch in the nose our industry has taken from the ongoing pandemic. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geoffrey-arend/support

The story of Dragonspunk Grows, the Black-owned organic farm in the Bayview, starts with the Chinese community. In this episode, Isaiah, whom you got to know in Part 1, takes us on a tour of Florence Fang community garden. Isaiah's work at the garden inspired him to join forces with Faheem Carter, to carve out a large section of the existing land to establish Dragonspunk Grows. It started out with their wanting to grow food for themselves and their neighbors, due to the area's status as a food desert. This June, Isaiah's fiancée, Danielle, suggested that they dedicate a row of vegetables to honor the life of George Floyd, who was murdered by Minneapolis cops in May. As for the future of Dragonspunk Grows, Isaiah and Danielle see their part in this as more of a service than a specific plot of land. They hope to replicate the model in other gardens, starting in the Bayview. You can help them reach their goals by donating to their Go Fund Me today. We recorded this podcast at Dragonspunk Grows in July 2020. Special thanks to Erin Lim of Bitch Talk Podcast for letting us know about Isaiah and the garden. Photography by Michelle Kilfeather

Yoga of Ascension

This summer solstice energy update looks at the June 20th summer solstice and June 21st new moon solar eclipse, this energetic corridor has an energy of action and enthusiasm tempered with the energy of the fool. A lot of people will feel motivated to start new projects or resume old ones with a new sense of will and purpose. So the energy of doing and accomplishing will be very supported over the next few weeks. As we discussed in my June Energy Forecast this month is a month of doing, and this new moon and solstice are very supportive of that energy. That being said a word of caution is needed. Yes June is a month of doing and you will have a lot of energy to beginning new projects and resume old ones with a fresh perspective. But the energy of the fool is very strong around this solstice and new moon. There will be a lot of energy to take action, but those actions may be somewhat naive, negligent, and careless. So as you bring forth on the wings of the energy of action around this June new moon and solstice try not to be the fool. Take a breath before you act and think it through. Exercise discernment and don’t act hastily. This June new moon and solstice has a dualistic quality. The energy and desire are available to act, but in the midst of action you may find yourself overcome with uncertainty. You may find yourself engaging in negative self talk and criticism. You may find yourself doubting the work you spontaneously began which was supported by June’s action energy. The energy of action is really supported in June. But the energy of naivete is also strong. Mistakes will be made which will be realized in upcoming months. But do not be paralyzed by fear and uncertain. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Own your naivete and strive for wisdom. Take action and be fearless but learn from your mistakes. Detach from the drama of June and cultivate the quality of gratitude. Many of us are healing scarcity consciousness and the fear that we are not supported by the universe and will not have enough. I grew up poor in the Appalachian mountains and have spent most of my life overcoming that poverty. Long after I was financially secure I still had scarcity consciousness. I thought I had to work 60 to 70 hours a week to maintain my success. I thought I couldn’t afford vacations, joy or happiness. It has taken quite a bit of work to shed poverty consciousness and experience gratitude and abundance. Gratitude is the key to healing our fear of scarcity. Be grateful what you have. Be grateful for the lessons you are presented with, whether the teacher is pleasure or pain. Have faith that the universe is conspiring in your favor for your highest good giving you the experiences you need to move on to the next stage of your journey. Be alike in pleasure and pain, winning and loss, established in a state of gratitude for whatever experiences come your way.

#10 | June Full Moon Energy Update 2020: Fire Energy | Rise in Power | Purging Grief & Anger

Yoga of Ascension

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2020 17:12

This June full moon energy update looks at the energies of the full moon lunar eclipse for June 5, 2020. Full moon lunar eclipses are about the ending of cycles both big and small. This full moon has several themes that relate to us collectively hitting rock bottom. The arrogance, haughtiness and impotence of those in power is undeniable and on full display. We see those places in our lives where there has been false love. We see the weakness, pettiness, and blindness of those in power. We see their love of money and nothing else, and we find ourselves stepping into the unknown of what it is to replace it. We are in hard times and a lot of people are worried. Yet there is a growing recognition of our power. People who have been oppressed and mistreated for generations are rising up to recognize their power and trying to decide what to do with that power. Those who are recognizing their power are supported with the energy of the dragon at this time. As they recognize untapped power and energy within themselves. June is a month of action for many people. For others there is a feeling of exhaustion and a need to retreat. To evaluate and review the last few mohs. They are needing to ground into their bodies and gain strength and replenish themselves. Those embodying the fire energy are purifying through the destructive force of fire. Those feeling the need for retreat are withdrawing to replenish themselves to help rebuild for what comes after. This June moon marks the end of a cycle of disempowerment for many people. It marks the end of settling for false love that knows nothing of sacrifice. It is the end of consenting to the rule of unaccountable power. It is the recognition that those who so arrogantly wield power are human beings, not gods, and their evil comes from a place of weakness and pettiness. The June full moon marks the end of many big cycles. But it is also the beginning of something new. As we pass through this full moon lunar eclipse we are passing into the unknown. We are passing into the void. What will our new cycles be? Will we simply repeat the sings of the past? Will this awakened power be used in service to life or in service to self? These are questions that are lingering with this full moon lunar eclipse. But there is no going back. The genie is out of the bottle. Once awakened this power will not go back to sleep. It will not settle for the world as it has been. The impotence and corruption of the powerful is too plane. Their malice too great. Their pettiness too low.

June Energy Forecast 2020: This June 2020 ascension energy forecast indicates June will be the beginning of the return to relative “normal.” Businesses will be re-opening and people will begin the process of returning to old familiar routines. It will be a month marked by an outward movement toward activity. It will be a time characterize by a movement toward harmony and productivity for many.We have a full moon lunar eclipse on June 5th and a new moon solar eclipse on June 21st. These two eclipses mark a wrapping up of big picture themes and cycles on the 5th with the full moon lunar eclipse and choices and new beginnings with the new moon solar eclipse on June 21st. June will be all about endings, choices and new beginnings. Will you renew your commitments to 3rd density or will you choose higher dimensional consciousness and loving? This June energy forecast indicates the return to normal holds within it a dark kernel for those recommitting to the third dimension. The dimensional split that has been accelerating since March due to the duality energy on the planet will continue as people begin leaving the energetic bubbles of their homes to return to “normal” life. People will be emerging into two very different types of reality. Those who have been in the hell spectrum of experience for the last three months are eager for a return to “normalcy.” They desperately want to get back to the way things were, and June will be characterized by this almost feverish effort to return to normal. These people are renewing their commitment to 3rd density and June will the outward manifestation of that commitment. Those who have been on the heaven spectrum of experience for the last three months are returning to “normal” with fresh eyes and are ready to make changes in their life that better align with their soul purpose and mission. Those who have been on the heaven spectrum of experience are returning to “normal” intent on changing it for the better. For those who fall in this category June is a time of committing to the more beautiful world their hearts know is possible and letting go of old commitments and energies that no longer serve them. This is the silver lining for the month of June which seems likely to extend through the months of July and August. June, July, and August share a common theme. They will mark a time of a return to the “new normal.” June will be the exuberant bursting forth into this brave new world. July will mark a return to a more temperate and balanced recalibration to the new normal. While August will be a time of reflection an introspection as people take stock in the contrast between the beginning of the year and the summer. There have been individual successes but the collective on average has not experienced a significant positive shift, so the lesson will return and intensify in September, catalyzing additional opportunities for growth and evolution. September will see sudden change that will cast the relative stability of the last few months upside down. This “September surprise” will shape the energy for the remainder of the year. Those who have used the last three months to deepen their connection with spirit and to identify and embody the truth of their being will be richly rewarded in the upcoming months. All the internal work they have done over the last three months will start to physically manifest in ways that will give them an opportunity to bring their life into more alignment with their souls. Those of you who have used this time wisely will be beacons of light over the upcoming months that will shine in the darkness experienced by others. You are being called be to leaders and way showers to those people in your lives and families who are struggling. You are being asked to embody your truth and shine your light and be an energetic leader during this time. The collective’s addiction to materialism and consumption will continue to drive the planet into escalating chaotic nodes of experience. Those of you who have awakened are being called to be the light in the darkness and to combat the darkness by embodying your own light. Continue to focus on the evolution of your soul and the embodiment of your highest truths. Do not allow yourself to be consumed by the chaos, fear, and anger of the 3D planetary thought body. The darkness is not defeated through confrontation. To confront the darkness with the consciousness of violence is to descend into the mire of duality. The darkness is defeated when you step more fully into your embodiment of the light within you. Be more loving. Be kind for no reason. Be generous with your love. Be prudent with your time and energy. Feed the light within yourself and starve the darkness.

Greater Las Vegas Real Estate Podcast with Michael Dedic

Now that we’re past the midway point of 2019, it’s time to check out some of the latest developments in our market. First of all, inventory has risen. In June of last year, we had 2.3 months’ worth of inventory on the market. This June, we’ve got a 3.3-month supply. This 43.5% increase means sellers still have the upper hand, but that buyers now have more to choose from. Even so, 3.3 months is still not much. If you plan on buying a home this year, you’ll need to work closely with an experienced Realtor to ensure your home search is successful.  Over that same 12-month period, the number of new listings as well as the number of pending sales went up by more than 9%. This just goes to show that our market is still quite active.  “The recent increase in inventory means sellers still have the upper hand, but that buyers now have more to choose from.” However, while homes are still selling, they are taking longer to do so. Last June, it took an average of just 27 days for a listing to sell. This June, listings are spending an average of 40 days on the market—a 48.1% increase. Those planning on selling should, therefore, be especially proactive in working with their agent to market their property.  On the plus side, homes are selling for more money lately. The average sales price in our area went from $338,136 to $354,042 between June of 2018 and June of this year.  Between these favorable conditions and the fact that we’re approaching the hottest time of the year for listing a home, sellers are faced with a lot of opportunities right now. And with interest rates still at historic lows, buyers, too, can take advantage of this great market. If you have any other questions or would like more information, feel free to give me a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
