Austrian filmmaker Jessica Hausner has one of the most immediately recognizable signatures as an auteur. Her films are known as much for their formal austerity as for their daring subject matter; they are films that – to use her phrase – “do not shout so loudly”. Those are also the kinds of films that Hausner, as Jury President at the 77ᵗʰ Locarno Film Festival, did not want to overlook in favor of louder, splashier titles. When she met her fellow jurors for the first time, Hausner stressed that it was important to consider films whose emotional power develops inside the viewer more slowly, accruing over time. We sat down with Hausner for a conversation on Locarno Meets to delve into her process in making films, her taste in cinema, the more than 30 takes it often takes to get a scene right, and her philosophy as president of a festival jury.

This week we're joined by our good friends Ian Rhine and Jake Serwin of the teriffic Clint Eastwood podcast Pod Casty For Me to discuss the Italian director Nanni Moretti and his 1993 personal essay/anthology film 'Caro Diario', awarded Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994 when Clint served as the Jury President. We discuss Moretti as subject within his own films, and how his arch and effacing tone offers perhaps a more palatable substitute to the films of a once-prominent filmmaker (now mired in controversy) known for his neurotic, self-referential films. Then, we discuss the film's stylistic markers that place it in conversation with not just the legacy of the Italian film industry, but with cinema as a whole. Finally, we talk about family planning and the wonderful world of vasectomies. (*Editor's Note* Aaron's procedure is in November, not Feburary as stated on the show. He's not sure why he said that, but wants listeners to know that he's not planning out his recovery watchlist 4 months in advance like a loser). Listen & Subscribe to Pod Casty For Me. About This EpisodeAmani Duncan was taught boldness early on through her family, who encouraged her to try everything and be anything she wanted to be. Even with this strong support system, there were many voices in her own head that planted the seeds of doubt and fear. Amani discusses self-talk and how to silence inner negativity and change the internal narrative by checking in with yourself, recognizing that are you enough, and knowing your worth. Through personal stories of overcoming grief and the fear of disappointing others, Amani also describes her professional journey from pivoting immediately after college into the music industry, a field she had no previous experience in, to becoming a veteran marketer and brand strategist. She discusses the role of fear in being bold- how being unafraid doesn't necessarily mean the absence of fear, but rather a willingness to try anyway and go for it. It's hard to believe that Berlin is right around the corner, but we kick off this week by looking at the Euro fest's announced Jury President, M. Night Shyamalan, and what movies might be in the mix to compete for the Golden Bear. Then it's a visit to a local fest: Cullen has seen several virtual screenings at the Chicago Film Festival and he details the lows and highs. Finally, we ponder Todd Haynes and his new music documentary THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, getting into the sights, the sounds, and the writing credits of the former Palme D'Ollie winner's first foray into the world of documentaries. Julie and Casey sit down with Cindy Gallop to learn the secret to saying what you really think. Along the way they discuss all kinds of "taboo" subjects, including ageism, anger, the future of porn and social sex, what the tech bros get so very wrong, why Cindy can't get funding for her world-changing startup, and how she plans to bring about world peace. TOP TAKEAWAYS — Be your own filter to attract “your” people and repel the ones who don’t get you. The future of business is doing good and making money simultaneously. Her company, Make Love/Not Porn, came out of her real-life experience with the consequences of the convergence of two real world problems: our inability to talk about sex, and the ubiquitousness of access to hard core pornography. Her giant goal is to socialize real world sex and good sexual practices and values, so that we can talk about it both in public and in private. When you concept a venture around existing bias and prejudices, you only reenforce them. You have to build the future into your product from the beginning, and you design with enormous respect for your community. Ageism affects EVERYONE at every single point along the age spectrum. “Sexual harassment has kept out of leadership and power the women leaders who would MAKE diversity and inclusion happen”—and it’s time to both legitimize women’s anger and encourage men to get angry about it too. Identify your values so that you can act upon them - then, instead of worrying about being brave or feeling confident, you simply act in the way that honors that. Women should “bullshit like the men do”, because chances are, you’ll just finally be giving your talent, experience, and brilliance what they’re worth. VITAL VOICE TRAINING COMMUNICATION SKILL: Define your communication core values to understand your habits and make powerful choices to show up the way you want to be seen in the world.
