Homeownership is one of the most important vehicles for building generational wealth and helping families achieve economic stability; however, Black and Latinx families often face barriers to accessing and maintaining homeownership. Since The Chicago Community Trust launched its strategic focus on closing the Chicago region's racial and ethnic wealth gap in 2019, affordable and equitable homeownership has been a key priority.  Connecting Capital and Community (3C) is a community-driven initiative housed at the Trust that collaborates with partners across multiple sectors to test innovative solutions that will increase Black and Latinx homeownership in East Garfield Park and Humboldt Park. Learnings from 3C's work have also influenced the Trust's Advancing Innovative Homeownership Financing Solutions grant program that funds partnerships between CDFIs or credit unions and housing organizations to develop innovative financial products that strengthen the purchasing power of low-to-moderate-income borrowers. In this episode of Trust Talks, we will explore the work of 3C, how community-centered collaboration can help close the homeownership gap, and what role philanthropy plays in supporting these efforts.  This episode is hosted by Shandra Richardson, director of strategic initiatives for The Chicago Community Trust, and features Lynnette McRae, program director for Connecting Capital and Community (3C); Joanna Trotter, executive director of global philanthropy at JPMorgan Chase; Mindy Rueden, program director at Habitat for Humanity Chicago; and Tim Swanson, founder of Inherent L3C.Production by Juneteenth Productions. The podcast was recorded at the Sound Foundation.

Sara is joined by Tim Swanson, Founder and Director of Research at Post Oak Labs, this week to talk about the latest and greatest news in blockchain. First up, we take a look at Bitwise ETF filing - The ‘real Bitcoin market. A majority of bitcoin trading volume is artificially created by unregulated exchanges, according to Bitwise Asset Management. The firm attached a report, in a bitcoin-based ETF submission, in which it collected and analyzed Bitcoin trading data, over four days in March, across 81 cryptocurrency exchanges. Tim comments that exchanges located in certain areas have a habit of exaggerating their volume and Sara unpacks some of the deeper issues this raises (01:18). Next we talk about the failed ICO trying to flog itself on eBay. For as little as $60,000, a slice of history could be yours. That's the starting price in an eBay auction for all the documents, all of the branding, all of the strings of 1s and 0s, and all the broken dreams of an initial coin offering (ICO) that never managed to sell a single token. Sarah comments that she has no idea what the company does because it hasn't built anything and Tim adds that they have no capital which is why they're selling on eBay (8:01). Significantly, weekly bitcoin trading volume on peer-to-peer (P2P) exchange, LocalBitcoins, (in Argentina) has increased to nearly $7 million. We also have a Tweet of the Week on ICO skeptics. All this and so much more on this week's episode of Blockchain Insider. And if you enjoyed our tweet of the week why not send us your best tweets? See if you can get a shout out on the show! Where do we stand on the now-familiar and paradoxical narrative surrounding gentrification? While high end development booms have pushed out locals and increased prices in neighborhoods like Pilsen, Brooklyn, and London's Elephant and Castle, gentrification also provides new economic opportunities. And despite many pointing the finger at young creatives and professionals as drivers of gentrification—introducing a tsunami of overpriced coffee shops, condos, and corporate chains—new trends indicate that they are also being priced out. What are the long-term effects of gentrification on communities, and is urban revitalization possible without it? Are young people causing gentrification, or have they also been disproportionately affected by an unaffordable housing market, growing rent rates, and overpriced grocery stores? SPEAKERS: Ghian Foreman, Executive Director, Greater Southwest Development Corporation; Karl Friedhoff, Fellow, Public Opinion and Asia Policy; Marisa Novara, Vice President, Metropolitan Planning Council; Tim Swanson, Chief Design Officer, Skender. Coinbase launch their early stage venture fund to a great deal of excitement, surprising given all the noise around ICOs. The exchange is planning to invest off its own balance sheet into companies it likes. It’s been a bad week for crypto exchanges with the Japanese regulator suspending two over failing KYC procedures and four high ranking executives have been arrested by South Korean police including CEO of South Korean exchange Coinnest in relation to billions of won embezzled from client accounts into their own. India bans regulated entities from entertaining virtual currencies. The central bank gave a deadline of 3 months to unwind from positions related to cryptocurrencies. Instead the regulator is planning to push blockchain in financial services to improve transparency. R3’s Research Director thinks that Central Bank digital currency could go live this year but warns that central banks will need to diversity their systems. The Third Web #0 - The Ether Review Final Episode

The Third Web

Welcome to the Third Web. A podcast about the technologies powering the next generation of human civilisation. I’m your host, Arthur Falls. This podcast is targeted at industry observers looking for a technical examination of issues on the frontier of what has become known as the blockchain space. However, for those less versed in the field, supplementary content will be published in anticipation of each episode. Failing that, I’ll add links in the notes to help along the casual listener. Blockchain technology, and specifically, the idea of a value-transport enabled internet is no longer new. Looking at the recent history of the space, we see a hockey stick of innovation and investment. In 2014, just as the first ICO boom launched, I began producing my first podcast, Beyond Bitcoin. It explored the explosion of new blockchain platforms and other innovations in the space. As exciting as this technology was, common problems existed across all platforms: scaling to support broad adoption, and providing a service the mainstream market would accept. After speaking with Meher Roy and Tim Swanson about these problems in early 2015, the line of questioning that inspired me to create Beyond Bitcoin came to an end. In that final episode, we settled on a view of the future in which a network of blockchains secured by permissioned validators would enable global value transfer. This made more sense than a future based on permissionless blockchain networks and all the challenges that came with them. Then came Ethereum. Infinite functionality paired with an aggressive scaling roadmap reopened the question of what might come next, this time examined in a new podcast, The Ether Review. Two years on, having been immersed in the world of Ethereum, interviewed hundreds of people for podcasts, articles and videos and worked for the largest blockchain centric company in the world - ConsenSys, a disturbing reality has become apparent. We have not moved on from the paradigm of 2014, and the Ethereum scaling roadmap will not provide the performance new use cases need to emerge. In future episodes of The Third Web, we will examine blockchain scaling, and ask the questions: What are the design trends bringing greater transaction supply to the market? What new business models will this enable? What new services can we expect to see, and what products will be built using those services? What will the Third Web really look like? Meher Roy was a virologist working in the vaccines industry when we first spoke in 2014. Today he is focussed full time on the blockchain space and hosts the excellent Epicenter podcast. Tim Swanson was director of market research at R3 for two years and has recently founded his own research company, Post Oak Labs Today we’re wrapping up The Ether Review and kicking off The Third Web. Some of the remarks I make in this episode are overstated and under qualified. Please feel free to critique anything views you disagree with in the comments and if there is sufficient intelligent controversy I’ll revisit the subjects in question in subsequent episodes. That was it! The first episode of The Third Web! A big thanks to Breakmaster Cylinder for the tunes. No social, email, or web accounts just yet but you can reach me on twitter @arthurfalls. Of course you should subscribe on itunes or your favorite podcast manager. this feed will probably still be called The Ether Review but it will update in time. http://www.ofnumbers.com https://www.validitylabs.org https://twitter.com/MeherRoy https://twitter.com/ofnumbers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawala https://propsproject.com https://soundcloud.com/arthurfalls/beyond-bitcoin-7-trivial-issuance-of-a-useful-asset

The word “Blockchain” gets thrown around a lot these days. Used so often—and in so many different contexts—it's hard to exactly define what it actually means. In short, it's a buzzword. As Tim Swanson of the R3 Consortium attests, the word doesn't mean a whole lot beyond “something magical”: the magical super-technology that fits into every excited sentence you can come up with about fintech. For the purposes of the interview, Swanson defines the word “Blockchain” as a kind of distributed ledger: a data structure that's “cryptographically secured,” “tamper resistant,” and “stored in the cloud.” Importantly, this is to say that Blockchains are only one form of distributed ledger. Technically, what R3 is building isn't a Blockchain per se; it's a different kind of distributed ledger R3's raised 100 million dollars for. It's a lot of money. That's what it takes to deploy a distributed ledger at scale, “for regulated financial institutions and capital markets specifically.” Listen in to learn more about R3, and hear more of Tim Swanson's insights on fintech. Be sure to subscribe, review, and if you can, donate some BitCoin to the cause.

One topic that is guaranteed to cause heated discussion among cryptocurrency enthusiasts is the idea that blockchains can be controlled by known validators and function without an underlying cryptocurrency. Some think this is a non-sensical idea fabricated by those spineless enough to want to appease regulators and but clueless enough to miss the whole point of cryptocurrencies. But others believe that Bitcoin is unsuited for a lof of ‘Bitcoin 2.0’ applications and that permissioned ledgers have wide-reaching potential to increase efficiency and transparency. Tim Swanson joined us for an important discussion of permissioned ledgers. He’s among their best-known proponents and has recently published a whitepaper discussing how they work and looking at different startups in the space. Topics covered in this episode: Why the ‘blockchains without bitcoin’ idea is so controversial Why it is strange that KYC is done widely on Bitcoin users but not on the validators Why even semi-decentralized blockchains can provide big efficiency gains Why the 51% attack possibility is an obstacle for the use of the Bitcoin as a settlement network Why financial institutions don’t care about censorship resistance but do care about irreversibility Episode links: Tim Swanson: Permissioned Distributed Ledgers Whitepaper Tim Swanson: Needing a Token to Operate a Distributed Ledger is a Red Herring Robert Sams: No, Bitcoin is not the future of securities settlement JP Koning: Why bitcoin has failed to achieve liftoff as a medium of exchange This episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain and Sébastien Couture.
