We continue Glenn Miller month in celebration of what would have been his 120th birthday on March 1. My dad was obviously a big Glenn Miller fan or we wouldn't have been able to do this month-long celebration of his music. He owned 12 33 ⅓ RPM Vinyl records of Glenn Miller performing his music, later conductors of the Miller band, and other band leaders recording Glenn's music. My dad owned even more Miller music on the original 78 RPM Shellac records. Now, if you are a follower of this show, you'll also know my dad was a really big Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass fan. He owned 12 records of the TJB. In this episode we bring them together with the Buddy DeFranco led Glenn Miller band from the 1960s. Sort of an early mashup. So get ready to hear one popular band play music from another popular band in Volume 168: Miller Band Translates TJB. More information about this album, see the Discogs webpage for it. Credits and copyrights The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Buddy DeFranco – Something New - Translates The Tijuana Brass Hits Label: Epic – LN 24206 Format: Vinyl, LP Released: 1966 Genre: Jazz Style: Big Band We will hear 7 of the 10 songs on the album. Welcome to Lunch with Shelley! Join us for a great chat with this week's awesome guest and my good friend Matt Rosenheim who is the President of the very fabulous Tiny Jewel Box, a real Washington Institution! I like to think of the Tiny Jewel Box – or TJB – as Washington's Tiffany's or Cartier, but better in many ways because it's truly unique to this city. And if you've ever been lucky enough to shop there or get a present from there, you know that a Tiny Jewel Box box is just as or more impeccably wrapped as one from Tiffany's or Cartier and certainly what's inside will be way more unique!During today's lunch, we discuss all things Tiny Jewel Box beginning with what the store was like when his grandparents first opened it, how each generation has marked their tenure while presiding over this remarkable jewel, and a lot about watches which was both fun and educational! We discuss what luxury is like these days, the joy of legacy, and how Matt and his wife first met and fell in love. We're dining at the Palm – so join us for a very interesting conversation with a great Washingtonian who also happens to have fabulous music taste! Download this episode wherever you get your favorite podcasts and in the meantime Peace – Love – and Lunch!
I'm going to nickname this episode Frank's earworms because these were the songs that stuck in my head sometimes for weeks after recording a show. They may not be the most popular of the songs I've played or even among my favorites all the time, but they had a catchy melody or rhythm that I couldn't get out of my head. So get ready for an episode with a lot more music and a lot less of me talking with Volume 100: Frank's Favorites. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass was never far from the stereo in my parents' living room. The TJB easily has the highest number of records represented in my dad's collection with 12. Have you ever wondered what the difference between an Angus Wagyu cross, and a grass-fed Galician Blonde is? Have you ever wondered why one supermarket steak seems great, and the next, not so much? Do you want to know more about the process of dry-ageing, and why it isn't just hanging meat up in a fridge? To bring you the answers to these questions, and many more, I had an amazing conversation with Thomas Joseph, of Thomas Joseph Butchery. Tom is a former investment banker who decided to change direction, and follow his passion - supplying ethically-sourced, dry-aged and grass-fed meat from around the UK, Europe and beyond. He operates from his beautiful farm shop and butchery, located on his family's Coxtie Green Farm in Essex, and delivers all over the UK. When I'm looking for best beef, bar none, I go to Tom, and he never lets me down. We talked about ethically-sourced meat, breeds, diet for cattle, diet for people, environments, farming, regenerative agriculture, water, air, soil, the vegans, cooking over fire and Tom's favourite cuts. This is a fantastic episode for anyone who wants to know a little bit more about their meat. If you have any questions for Tom, please put them in the comments, as I'll be providing extra, follow-up content when I visit the farm. We can do some Q&A. 00:00 Intro 01:26 Who is Tom, and what does he do? 05:06 The flaws of both row crop and feed lot agriculture. Cost vs the right way of doing things. 08:59 Bringing food back to basics. 09:47 Pesticides, herbicides and artificial preservatives. 10:33 There are a lot of good quality farms. 13:43 Who are Thomas Joseph Butchery's clients? 16:21 Breeds vs location vs style of farming and diet 22:22 Do different breeds have a flavour, or is it just down to their location and diet? 24:21 Global issues around farming and food provision. 26:10 Beef tastes like the animal's diet. 26:47 The demand for grass-fed beef. 28:15 Are people asking for more fat? 31:38 All about dry-ageing. 38:54 Tom's favourite steak, cut and source. 40:21 The best way to cook a steak. 41:55 The best low-budget cuts 42:58 Where can we find TJB? This is the first of many episodes where we will feature one of my dad's favorite trumpet players. I already told you in a previous episode how both my dad and I played the same trumpet in our high school bands. My dad ended up with a dozen Tijuana Brass records and a couple of Alpert's solo albums. So I thought I would start with the very first one, not necessarily the most popular. Following that, we have our monthly conversation, which is about “Utopia,” the elusive and idyllic no-place of a happier and more just society. The idea of utopia has had many consequences throughout history, and much has been built and unbuilt around it. Participants in this conversation include a diverse group of researchers, artists and designers composed by Susana Delahante Matienzo (Cuban, based in Amsterdam), Giuliana Visco (based in Rome), and Ou Ning (based in China). Finally, our host Sylvain Souklaye chats with KMRU to introduce the work of Sarah Badr (FRKTL), whose new, untitled sound art piece closes the episode. This podcast series is produced by Sylvain Souklaye, with Dalida María Benfield and Chris Bratton. Ariel Malkahttp://ariel.chronotext.org/ TJB TJB, is a non-binary artist-philosopher whose work focuses upon the conception of the body, Being and the idea of a multiplicity of Self/s in performance. This work can be located within the framework of performance art and philosophical/phenomenological investigations that look to de/construct and challenge perception, alongside the assumed liminal barriers of body-based art. Xe is known for creating artworks that capture an altered space, environment, or period of time that regardless of scale, will often make intense, sometimes visceral, beautiful pieces that place the body in extremis. Living and working in the UK, TJB has been exhibiting work since 2001 and internationally since 2009 particularly through Europe and East coast USA. TJB is also the artistic director of Tempting Failure, which produces the London Biennial of International Performance Art, and curates a wide range of transgressive performance art practices. You can find out more about TJB at tjb.org.uk and they’d like to extend an invitation to all listeners to engage with their unique ongoing project In/Visible Exchange where TJB expands conversations away from social media via unique electronic zines based entirely on the questions sent to them.https://www.temptingfailure.com/ FRKTL is the solo experimental project of British-Egyptian audiovisual artist Sarah Badr. A living legend is back with his sixth album in the past seven years. Herb Alpert, the famed trumpeter and former record company executive, works with producer Jochem van der Saag on the new album Music Vol. 1. The combination of these two talents is masterful and satisfying, and it produces a collection that will please several generations of fans. The album features primarily cover songs with new treatments that emphasize rhythms and backbeats, and this review not only takes a look at the new album, but also offers a peek at Alpert’s phenomenal success in the music industry. It was 55 years ago this year, for example, that Alpert and his Tijuana Brass began conquering the charts with his first hit album and single, The Lonely Bull. Music Vol. 1 features unique renditions on some familiar classics such as the Beatles “Michelle,” John Lennon’s “Imagine,” and Nate King Cole’s “Unforgettable” as well as new version of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours.” Alpert also brings back one the TJB’s early hits, “Flamingo,” the album’s first single. Alpert received a Grammy nomination for the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for his 2016 work, Human Nature. In many ways, Music Vol. 1 is a superior collection, and should not only receive a 2017 nomination, which would be his 25th, but he can be considered a strong early favorite.
