If you're a Marvel movie fan, Iron Man is probably familiar to you. In this episode of the Impactus podcast, we are excited to talk with a real-life “Iron Man”—a humble businessman from Hamilton, Ontario, who was the first Canadian to run not one, not two, but three Ironman races in three consecutive days for over 45 hours of physical exertion. But he wasn't running for himself but for a greater cause. Gord Pauls owned and operated a General Insurance brokerage for 28 years and opened a running apparel store in 1996. He is an accomplished runner and triathlete and a respected, personable, and inspirational leader in the Hamilton running community. Since taking up running twenty-six years ago, Gord has completed over 35 marathons, including 12 Boston Marathons, with a personal best time of 2h:51m. In addition, he has run countless other races, often raising money to support charities. He also races to encourage some of the hundreds of runners he has inspired through his example and instruction. As a coach, Gord has seen his clients meet and exceed their goals. Not satisfied with being an outstanding runner, Gord took up duathlons and triathlons in recent years, earning berths on the Canadian National Teams plus completing eight grueling Ironman Triathlons. In 2010, he became “Canada's only Triple Ironman,” a back-to-back-to-back Ironman race with a total distance of 678 km, raising a quarter of a million dollars ($257,000) for micro-credit loans in Haiti. Gord talks with us about the physical struggles of his favorite activity and how pushing himself through these excruciating exercises has impacted and inspired his faith life and the call to love and serve others through what he is doing. Mark will blush at what I am about to say....but, in this episode we chat about his extraordinary 36 year career in triathlon and when I say extraordinary, I mean it.Mark competed in the UK's first ever triathlon in 1983 and has been hooked ever since, but not so much on short distances... Mark has raced in over 36 Ironmans - that's a race made up of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride and a marathon run on the end. However, Mark hasn't stopped there. He has also finished a double Ironman TWICE - AND a TRIPLE Ironman! He is my hero, for if I ever complete a triple Ironman it would be a dream come true.AND if that's not enough, he broke the world record for the most press ups in under 30 mins at 1,000 - I'm working towards 50 at the end of the year!I would be lying if that was all of his impressive achievements and the best part - he's not slowing down! His eyes are set on more ironmans (even the extreme) and he's coaching me on my journey too :)So without further ado, here is Mark Kleanthos' story part 1 - In part 2, next week, we skim the surface of nutrition and the mental game. Let me know what you think by leaving me a review or sending me a message via my bot on http://www.adelaidegoodeve.com (www.adelaidegoodeve.com)Enjoy!
Rose Byass suffered a mental breakdown and ended up hospitalised and at rock bottom but inside she had a strong will to survive and to get back up again, a strong desire to climb back out of the morass and after over a decade in the army and having faced many of lifes typical problems she the resilience to get back up. A big part of her recovery journey was when she took up running. At first just short distances but within a very short period of time she started tackling one ultramarathon after the other. Getting mentally stronger alongside getting physically stronger and fitter. She is a strong advocate for the power of sport to help people overcome depression and mental health issues. Her next challenge is to compete in Florida in the Triple Ironman. We would also like to thank the sponsors of this show. Being able to complete an ironman event is said to be one of the most extreme tests of mental and physical endurance on the planet. Competing continuously for over 12 hours; swimming 2 ½ miles, then cycling for 112 miles before completing a 26 mile marathon, will push anyone to their absolute limits. However, now try and imagine how you would feel if those figures were tripled. Richard Hume, completed a grueling 7.2-mile swim, 336-mile bike ride and 78.6-mile run, finishing in just over 52 hours and in the process became one of the fastest ever triple ironman finishers for his age group. Key messages from Richard: Time and time again Richard referred to the importance of creating a series of realistic targets, in his training and in the events, that would take him to his end goal. Let's not also forget how Richard overcame a great personal challenge in the process, in this case his back problem, explaining how, whenever he was told 'no you can't', he channelled those negative messages into positive motivation.
