It's been just over a week since the Trump administration very publicly claimed that Tylenol usage is linked to an increased rate of autism.Based on dubious evidence, the White House asserted that acetaminophen – the active ingredient in Tylenol – is what's behind the “current autism epidemic.”For all of the bluster and upheaval that arose from the communications coming out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, there are real lessons to be learned for health brands and medical marketers on a professional level. However, on a personal level, there is also plenty that can be learned from those living on the spectrum or caring for those who do.On this episode, managing editor Jack O'Brien moderates an in-depth, critical conversation about the Tylenol-autism controversy between editor-in-chief Jameson Fleming and Rachel Lowenstein, co-founder and chief creative officer of the Neu Project, a creative consultancy.Music: “Deep Reflection” by DP and Triple Scoop Music. Medical marketing is faced with gale-force winds of uncertainty, so we're going to spend most of this week's episode focused on the industry's future but in two distinct ways. For our feature interview, we're joined by recurring guest Andrea Palmer, the CEO of Publicis Health Media, as well as Brad Liebow, who recently jumped from Spark Foundry to become PHM's first chief investment officer. The pair explain why the position was established, how it is designed to further differentiate PHM from other medical marketing agencies and how they assess the modern health media landscape. After that is our Trends segment, where we'll discuss the Trump administration's press conference tying the usage of Tylenol among pregnant women to the rise in cases of autism. The announcement, while widely-expected, was presented to the American people without solid evidence – so we'll dive into what it all means for health brands like Tylenol manufacturer Kenvue as well as medical marketers and HCPs.We'll also do a bit of housecleaning on those Untitled Letters from the FDA as part of the ongoing DTC pharma ad crackdown. Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is, by all accounts, a painful disease. An estimated 3 million Americans live with HS, which is most commonly identified by flare ups as well as painful and unflattering lumps under the skin.Over the past few years, drugmakers have launched campaigns and marketing efforts to bring greater attention and understanding to the disease.Recently, Incyte launched HS Truths – an educational campaign to shine a spotlight on the physical symptoms of the disease as well as the associated mental health challenges.Patient-led, HS Truths provides insights into how frustrating it can be to live with the disease before receiving a proper medical diagnosis – which occurs after an average of seven to 10 years. This week, Managing Editor Jack O'Brien is joined by Stephenie Atkins, senior director, brand lead product strategy and marketing at Incyte, to discuss HS Truths and how it serves to elevate the profile of HS as a disease state. And for our Trends segment, we're talking about all things related to the continued splintering of vaccine policy uniformity in America under Robert F. In 2016, Brian Wansink wrote a blog post that prompted scientific sleuths to investigate his work. They found evidence of data manipulation, and, after several news articles and two investigations by his institution, he would found to have committed misconduct, as defined by Cornell University. His work had been used to inform US policy around food, much of which has now been thrown into question.Cases like this are rare, but science is not immune to misconduct. The rise in 'paper mills' — organisations that produce questionable or fake papers that they sell authorships on — has led some to worry that misconduct is on the rise and that a proportion of the scientific literature cannot be trusted. In episode two of Self Correction, we explore how researchers are responding to the problem of research misconduct. We discuss how difficult it is to determine the prevalence of misconduct, and how sleuths, journalists and research integrity institutions are fighting back. This episode was written and produced by Nick Petrić Howe. Are you ready for some football? The 2025 NFL season kicks off this week with the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night. The highest linear TV ratings are usually delivered by live sports broadcasts and no entity is a more reliable generator for eyeballs than the NFL.It should then come as no surprise that drugmakers want to intensify their relationship with the league.Take, for example, Novartis was named the first-ever corporate pharmaceutical partner of the NFL in March. The announcement came one month after the Swiss pharma giant ran its first Super Bowl ad to raise awareness for breast cancer. While Novartis receives top billing as the lead pharma sponsor for the NFL, there are other health brands pursuing opportunities with players and franchises across the league. This week, we're joined by Stacia Garner, VP of marketing at Edwards Lifesciences, to discuss the company's partnership with the Los Angeles Rams to raise awareness of heart valve failure.-TRENDSAnd for our Trends segment, we welcome back Steven Madden to MM+M and dive into the ongoing turmoil at the CDC. It's been less than a month since the annual adland bonanza, but Cannes continues to drive industry headlines. Some campaigns shined through and earned industry plaudits, including a number of efforts touching on relevant – in some cases, controversial – health topics. One of them is No More Hippocrites, which was developed by sexual health telehealth company Wisp and its agency partner Eversana Intouch, a 2025 MM+M Agency 100 honoree. In this week's episode, reporter Heerea Rikhraj delves into No More Hippocrites with Ivan Blotta, head of art and creative excellence at Eversana Intouch – unpacking the work and examining how it earned a Silver Pharma Lion at Cannes. Then, we discuss the health-related provisions included in the recently-passed One Big Beautiful Bill, including a few that might serve as a boon for pharma companies.Music: “Deep Reflection” by DP and Triple Scoop Music.
