On this week's episode of the Fashion Crimes Podcast, Holly Katz takes us back to her summer road trip to Charleston, South Carolina, where she visited the charming new brick-and-mortar store of the *Goldbug Collection* on Spring Street.   Founded by sisters Mini Hay Avant and Kathleen Hay Hagood, Goldbug is a local jewelry line born out of Croghan's Jewel Box, their family's iconic jewelry store in Charleston.   As fourth-generation jewelers, these sisters have reimagined Southern charm with their unique costume jewelry, sending their bug-inspired creations all over the country.   In this episode continuing her #womensupportingwomen series, she stops in and sits down with the Goldbug Collection team member Riley Steinhour while Mini and Kathleen were away to learn all about the brand's inspiration, how it came to life, and why Goldbug is taking Charleston by storm.   Be sure to head over to our YouTube Channel to watch this fun in-store interview!   KEY TOPICS:   The Goldbug Story: From Family Tradition to Fashion Forward Mini and Kathleen, raised in a family of jewelers, began designing jewelry inspired by Charleston's low country beauty. From palm fronds to local bugs, the sisters turned their love for nature into a costume jewelry line that blends nostalgia and playfulness. #bugstobeautiful   Holly and Riley explore the roots of the brand, which started in Croghan's Jewel Box, a century-old jewelry store in Charleston, and how their family's engraving expertise has added a personalized touch to their pieces.   The Charm of Bug-Inspired Jewelry Holly and Riley dive into one of Goldbug's signature elements: jewelry inspired by Charleston's Palmetto Bug. While this Southern roach may not seem like a likely muse, Mini and Kathleen transformed it into an emblem of the region's character and charm. #what?!?!   The line also features okra-shaped pieces, peanuts, and fireflies, reflecting the beauty of everyday Southern life.    Riley shares how these quirky pieces resonate with customers, turning Charleston's pests into wearable art.   The Craft of Customization and Engraving A hallmark of Goldbug jewelry is its customization. With engraving passed down as a family trade, Goldbug offers bespoke pieces that customers can personalize with initials, dates, or symbols.   Riley showcases popular items like the “Forget Me Not” pendant and the baby puffy hearts, which make perfect gifts for loved ones.   Whether it's a charm that commemorates a special moment or an engraved token with sentimental meaning, Goldbug's pieces are a fusion of family history and modern design.   Mixing High and Low Jewelry Styles Holly discusses one of her favorite aspects of the Goldbug collection: its versatility in styling. Riley highlights how the costume jewelry can be easily paired with fine jewelry for an effortlessly chic look.   Holly shares tips on mixing real and costume jewelry to create a bold yet timeless style. Whether it's stacking bangles or layering necklaces, Goldbug pieces offer the perfect balance of playful design and classic elegance.   Why We Love the Goldbug Collection: She wraps up the episode by expressing her love for the *Goldbug Collection* and why she is passionate about supporting women-owned, small businesses. #YYAASSSS   Goldbug's combination of family heritage, creativity, and Charleston flair makes it a must-visit destination for any fashion lover. With pieces that tell a story and celebrate Southern charm, Goldbug is more than jewelry—it's a celebration of artistry and community.   Holly encourages her listeners to check out the store online, follow them on social media, and discover how they can add a little bug love to their own collections. We would have never believed it until we saw it, but only Goldbug can create beauty and style from everyday things can be easily overlooked.  We were so impressed by their collection we can't wait to see what they will think of next. In this episode, Emma-Louise is joined by evolutionary anthropologist, Dr Anna Machin, to discuss the topic of love - why we love, how we love, what's happening in our brains and in our bodies when we fall in love.... If you've ever felt like you're going a little crazy when in the early stages of romance, Dr Machin explains why. In a similar vein, she also breaks down some of the most enduring cultural myths surrounding love and romance, outlining why we get this topic so very wrong. The idea of 'the one'? Bullsh*t. But there is a biological explanation for the notion of soulmates. If you're curious to learn more about the ideas discussed in this episode make sure to read Dr Machin's book, Why We Love, which we found fascinating. Neurochemically, what is love? How can neuroscience help us maintain long-term relationships? Is heartbreak real? In this episode, we discuss the neuroscience and psychology of: • Why falling in love can feel so stressful • How being infatuated activates the same neurotransmitters as having OCD • What happens to your brain when exciting new romances settle into comfortable decades-long unions We speak to Dr. Anna Machin, renowned author and evolutionary anthropologist at the Department of Experimental Psychology at Oxford University, England, and author of ‘Why We Love', about oxytocin, dopamine, and lesser-discussed hormones like beta-endorphins, whether genetics can heighten our predisposition to desire relationships, and why love (in all forms, not just romantic) is a fundamental human need.  Cardiologist Columbus Batiste, MD joins us for a conversation around love's impact on both the heart and the brain, and what the medical term for heartbreak has to do with octopi! We speak with psychologist Dr. Arthur Aron, esteemed professor of psychology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, best known for his work on intimacy in interpersonal relationships, and development of the self-expansion model of motivation in close relationships, about the differences between passionate and companionate love, and what his self-expansion model says about why we're motivated to seek out relationships. Dr. Richard S. Schwartz, MD, renowned psychiatrist, author and associate professor at Harvard Medical School and on the faculty of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and the Psychodynamic Couple and Family Institute of New England, discusses the neuroscience of distinguishing love from obsession. His work and research focuses on social connection and lasting marriage. With his wife, Jacqueline Olds, MD, he has co-authored three books on these subjects. Plus: we share our own love story — meeting while working on healthcare systems in war-torn Afghanistan — and explore how love can be found in the midst of shared challenges. ‘Your Brain On' is hosted by neuroscientists and public health advocates Ayesha and Dean Sherzai. ‘Your Brain On... As relationships mature, holding hands seem to become less of a priority. And that could be a big mistake. There are real benefits to holding hands and this episode begins by explaining what those benefits are. https://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/05/fashion/05hands.html We may not like to admit it, but just about everyone enjoys a juicy bit of gossip. In fact, we all gossip at least once in a while and that turns out to be a good thing. Gossip serves a lot of useful purposes in life. Isn't salt – salt? I've always thought so. Sure there is kosher salt and sea salt and regular salt but now there are all these different colored designer salts? It seems odd sometimes that as much as we need love and care about it – we are often not particularly good at it. That's according to Laura Mucha author of the book, Love Understood: The Science of Who, How and Why We Love (https://amzn.to/3AZIdjm). Laura has spent most of her adult life researching love and relationships. Listen as she joins me with her insights on the topic that will hopefully inspire you to love better. Do you like making small talk with strangers? A lot of people don't because they think it is a waste of time or because they simply hate small talk, or they figure -what's the point? Well, Joe Keohane has another perspective. He there is great value in talking with strangers and has proof to back it up. Joe is author of the book The Power of Strangers: The Benefits of Connecting in a Suspicious World (https://amzn.to/3hzh1QK) and he lays out a compelling case for why you should be more willing to talk with people you don't know, because the benefits are numerous. Integrity is defined as, “The perceived pattern of alignment between words and actions.” Living a life of integrity seems noble and is something to strive for. Introduction I was told not to think too much about love. Obsess over it, let it dye the very fabric of my being: but do not think about it. Why, after all, would I want to overanalyse the magic and mystery? Would this not reduce a storybook to words and pages? I was told that I was incomplete and was to search for another who would make me whole. This search, I was promised, would lead me to a partner I would love and be happy with forever. And are love and happiness not required for a good life? Yet, these demands, these stories, and these questions feel restrictive and misleading. Why must I not think about what you say is so important? Why must I believe a story I have seen end in tears countless time? It is time we started taking control of love rather than letting love control us. There is no one size fits all approach given to us by nature: not everyone finds ‘the one', not everyone wants to find the one, and not all relationships need to last. Imagine the lives we could craft if we loved proactively, with honesty and freedom. If we all did this together, we could choose what we wanted and not be pressured into what we've been told is good. “He made a wretch His treasure (Ginawa Niyang kayamanan ang isang walang palad),” malugod nga nating inaawit. ETF Investing and Why We Love to Trade ThemETF Investing is better than Mutual Fund investing, but you do need to learn a few things about ETF investing. If you're new to trading or just beginning you may have never heard of ETF investing. Let's take a closer look at ETF Investing. Starting with ETFs; what they are, how do they work, the different types of ETFs; the pros and cons of ETFs and how they benefit (or hurt) you as a trader. Much of this post comes from Investopedia.com which is IMO the best source of information for all things investing, including ETF Investing. What is an ETF?The acronym stands for exchange-traded funds. So what does this mean? An ETF represents a basket of assets. Basically, that is a portfolio of stocks, bonds, options, and other tradable assets. that are put together by a professional money manager and put on the stock exchange for investors to buy and sell quickly. When you're investing in an ETF you're investing in multiple companies that represent or mirror an index. For example, if you were interested in investing in the S&P 500, you don't actually invest in the index itself. Instead, you would invest in an ETF that represents a portion of that index. The ETF for the S&P 500 is “SPY”. When investing in SPY, instead of buying all 500 companies that the S&P represents you are participating in that index at a fraction of the cost. There are two main types ETFs, “Market” or “Index” ETFs. Like the name suggests, Market ETFs or Index ETFs replicate the index of a market. There are different ETFs for the different indexes. For example, as talked about earlier, the S&P 500 is known as SPY and the NASDAQ 500 is referenced as QQQ. The second type of ETFs is known as Sector ETFs. These let you invest in specific sectors of the markets such as healthcare, or tech stocks. Like the Index ETFs each sector is represented by a unique ticker. So, for investing in the healthcare sector the ETF would be represented as XLV. What Makes Them Different from Mutual Funds:Although ETFs have basic similarities to the two and can often be very comparable, they do present slight differences. Unlike mutual funds, ETFs can be traded throughout the day versus only being able to trade at market close. They also present lower fees than mutual funds. Generally, mutual funds charge a 1.42% fee while fees on average for ETFs are 0.53%. Further, the total price you pay for ETFs is the share price times the number of shares. Basically, you can't place an ETF order for a dollar amount as you can't place a mutual fund order for a number of shares.ETFs take about 3 days to settle versus the 1 day it takes for mutual funds. Lastly, minimum investment price of ETFs and the function of automatic reinvesting. ETFs typically have a very low investment minimum compared to mutual funds, and this price depends on what the price of the share is at the time.

Imagine love as a rope that ties people to one another. It can bend, shift and grow as we do. But what happens when the rope is torn? Do we sear the frayed edges in hate or do we repair the damage with forgiveness? Why must I love my neighbor, when hate is easier? Why must I show mercy when grudges hold more satisfaction? Why must I be the first to extend my hand when in the past I have been bitten? -Monologue by Hannah Mcintyre ( Co-Host of Graced with Questions) In Season 2 EP 1, we are excited to be back with 5 new ( Phebe, Deena, Emma, Hannah, and Tiwa) co-hosts in addition to Grace and Josh to unveil the difficult truths behind the heart. Dr. Helen Fisher, Biological Anthropologist, is Senior Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute and Chief Science Advisor to Match.com. She uses brain scanning (fMRI) to study the neural systems associated with the sex drive, romantic love, attachment, rejection, love addiction and long-term partnership happiness. She has written six books on lust, romance and attachment now sold in 25 countries— among them: Why We Love; Why Him, Why Her?; and Anatomy of Love (2nd Ed). She also studies courtship trends in the digital age, using a representative sample of 50,000 single Americans to examine hooking up, friends with benefits, video chatting and why today's dating patterns may lead to decades of relative family stability—due to a trend she calls “slow love.” Using data collected from her biologically-based questionnaire, the Fisher Temperament Inventory, now taken by 15+ million people in 40 countries, she is also studying the biological basis of personality and is a pioneer in examining the neurochemistry of team-building, innovation and leadership to explain how people of different biological styles of thinking are predisposed to work, buy, innovate and lead. Fisher appears regularly on national and international TV, radio, print and podcasts. She is a TED All-Star with over 12 million views of her TED talks; a recipient of the American Anthropological Association's Distinguished Service Award for her work at presenting anthropological data to the public; and was chosen in 2015 by Business Insider as one of “The Fifteen Most Amazing Women in Science.” Follow Dr. Helen Fisher on her website at HelenFisher.com Follow the My Fame Explained podcast on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

We crave it and yet love can also be the source of incredible pain and misery. He is the author of "Why We Love and Exploit Animals". We discuss: - The psychology of human-animal relations - Links between sexism, racism & speciesism - "Us humans are weird". We're not fully rational decision makers - Being sceptical of our own rationality - Knowing the right answer isn't the same as persuading others to agree or make changes - Growing up in Belgium, a largely Catholic country but with many who are non-practicing - Attending church, then becoming "strongly atheist" because of evidence, but also "the nasty stuff" (sexism, homophobia, racism) - Being raised with values of compassion & respect. Finding those values in Christianity, other religions and in Humanism - Moving to a more nuanced view of the good and bad in religion - Traditions and rituals have value for some people. As long as they don't cause harm to people outside or within the group - The abuse of power in institutionalised religion - Pre-human proto-morality - We don't need supernatural beliefs to justify compassionate ethics. We just need them too justify harmful ethics - Religious schooling - Being angry with the world as a teenager: religion; capitalism; animal products; injustice - then being led to study human behaviour - Taking teenage rebellion and applying it to social justice activism in academia - Moral intuitions re: "freedom, equality and avoiding harm to others" - Freedom & equality shouldn't just be left wing concerns. They're much more widely shared - Sentience matters re: moral consideration, not intelligence - Are freedom and equality fundamental or important because of how they impact suffering/flourishing? - Caring about animals. Having companion animals as family members - The Meat Paradox - Seeing a family member killing chickens and rabbits - The hardcore punk music scene & Straight Edge. Bands with a clear, constructive message re: politics & animal ethics & anti-fascism (vs. more pessimistic grunge and 1970's punk) - "I can't keep eating meat any more", supported by the positive social pressure of the music scene & friends making the change - Parents initially resisting veg*nism, needing to learn DIY (it's easier now!) - Learning about dairy/eggs & going vegan at University - Wild animal suffering and how to prioritise it vs. animal farming/fishing. The risk of paternalism/hubris - Effective Altruism - Benevolent & hostile sexism - Sentientism's focus on inclusive moral consideration - The challenges of rescue and sanctuary animals and predator companion animals - The default human answer of "kill them all" re: issues with wild animals - Animals don't care what category we put them in. They suffer just the same - And much more... Transkript Intro Cari: [0:15] Hallo Manuel. Manuel: [0:18] Hallo Carina. Echo, Echo. Cari: [0:25] Na? (Na?) Was macht der goldene Herbst? Cari: [1:14] Zum Auf-dem-Balkon-Trinken. Manuel: [1:17] Sehr gerne. (D1.) Ist es schon D1?Support Easy German and get interactive transcripts, live vocabulary and bonus content: easygerman.org/membership

Kristof Dhont studies the psychology behind humans’ complicated feelings about animals. In particular, his research looks at how the existence of “speciesism” can stem from the same psychological factors that also produce other social prejudices. In this episode, Kristof and I talk about how people avoid connecting meat to the animals it comes from, how a social dominance worldview gives rise to speciesism, and what psychology can (and can’t) tell us about effective advocacy.Check out Dr. Dhont’s new book: Why We Love and Exploit Animals: Bridging Insights from Academia and AdvocacyAnd as I mention at the end of the episode, a few years ago, I wrote my own vegan cookbook: Vegan Spanish Cooking. Some of the things that come up in this episode:How people disconnect “meat” from the animals it comes from (Kunst & Hohle, 2016)Why people still eat meat even when they object to its production (“the meat-paradox”; Bastian & Loughnan, 2016)Denying animals’ “minds” to justify meat-eating (Bastian, Loughnan, Haslamn, & Radke, 2011) “Social dominance orientation” (see this helpful summary)Connecting social dominance and speciesism (Dhont et al., 2014; 2016)How dehumanization reflects treating animals as lesser beings (Costello & Hodson, 2010) For a transcript of this show, visit the episode's webpage: http://opinionsciencepodcast.com/episode/how-we-think-about-animals-with-kristof-dhont/Learn more about Opinion Science at http://opinionsciencepodcast.com/ and follow @OpinionSciPod on Twitter.

Poor, Sick, Mad & Criminal in 19th Century New York (0:38)Guest: Stacy Horn, Author of “Damnation Island: Poor, Sick, Mad & Criminal in 19th-Century New York”Nellie Bly is heading back to the site of her most famous exploit. As an investigative journalist in the late 1800s, Bly went undercover to get herself committed to the notorious insane asylum on an island in New York's East River. Her expose shocked the world and drew attention to the dreadful treatment of those with mental illness. Today Roosevelt Island is a trendy residential neighborhood, but its residents want to make sure the island's difficult past is remembered. Hence the Nellie Bly statue they're planning for the spot where the insane asylum once stood. (Originally aired 7/25/2019). Romantic Love Is One of the Most Addictive Substances on Earth (37:07)Guest:  Helen Fisher, Biological Anthropologist, Senior Research Fellow, The Kinsey Institute, Indiana University. Chief Scientific Advisor for Match.com. Author of “Anatomy of Love” and “Why We Love.” After scanning the brains of people falling in and out of love and surveying tens of thousands of people on a dating site, Helen Fisher has concluded that romantic love is among the most addictive substances on Earth. We're not talking about lust or sex drive. She says the desire–to fall in love, be loved romantically by someone–is entirely separate and even more powerful. (Originally aired 01/07/2020). How Effective is Sign Language Interpreted Performance for Deaf Audiences? (52:52)Guest: Michael Richardson, PhD, Author of the Study: “Playing Bilingual: Interweaving Deaf and Hearing Cultural Practices to Achieve Equality of Participation in Theatrical Performance Processes”Attendance at live theater performances by deaf people is low. And for good reason. The costumes, makeup, set, and lights, are all part of the full sensory experience of theater. But that's lost on those who have to watch an interpreter off to the side the entire time. Is it possible for a deaf person to have an equal theater experience as someone who isn't deaf? (Originally aired 10/28/2019). Screen Time Doesn't Account for the Rises in Depression and Anxiety in Teenagers (1:10:07)Guest: Sarah Coyne, Professor of Family Life, Brigham Young University You may have heard that spending so much time on social media is making teenagers anxious and depressed. If you're the parent of a “screenager” addicted to a smart phone, I'm sure you've worried about this. Well, maybe worry a bit less. An eight-year study of teenagers finds no evidence that time spent on social media is “destroying a generation.” (Originally aired 11/12/2019).  Historically Black Colleges and Universities Are Struggling to Survive (1:22:06)Guest: Delece Smith-Barrow, Senior Editor for Higher Education, The Hechinger ReportMartin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Spike Lee, Oprah Winfrey, Samuel L. Jackson, Chadwick Boseman–aka Black Panther. That's just a partial list of prominent African Americans who graduated from an HBCU, which stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. There are more than a hundred HBCUs around the country–Howard, Tuskegee, Spelman, Shaw, Fisk, Morehouse–are some names you might recognize. If you saw Beyonce's Coachella performance in 2018–or the Netflix documentary about it-that whole thing was an ode to HBCUs. She had marching bands and step dancers. Beyonce's HBCU tribute was well-timed, because many of these schools are in crisis. Enrollment is down. Government funding is down. More than a dozen HBCUs have closed. (Originally aired 11/05/2019).

More positive contact [with an outgroup] reduces prejudice. No matter how you measure it, no matter how you set up your study design, once there's a positive contact situation, you lower prejudice towards the outgroup... These effects tend to be stronger among those higher on social dominance orientation and those higher on right-wing authoritarianism, which makes intergroup contact quite a good and efficient strategy to reduce prejudice among those who seem to be initially prejudiced towards outgroups.- Kristof DhontRecent psychological research on intergroup contact and human-animal relations has implications for effective animal advocacy strategy. He gives very actionable tips to understand if someone is lying, if someone is happy to chat with us, if we should close that business deal, or how to improve our public speaking skills. We cover a wide range of topics, including: Heuristics for understanding when others are uncomfortable or under stress. When we can confidently suspect on someone, and when not. How our body reacts when threatened. The human body reactions, explained part by part. Rips and warning when trying to unmask deception. And much more. Please enjoy, and be sure to grab a copy of What Every Body Is Saying by Joe Navarro You can also listen on Google Play Music, SoundCloud, YouTube, or in any other podcasting app by searching "Made You Think." Like other animal species whose limbic brains protected them in this manner, humans possessing these limbic reactions survived to propagate because these behaviors were already hardwired into our nervous system.” 1:13 – Looking at how the human body reacts to stress and using that to figure out if somebody is lying or better understand emotional and mental state of somebody. 1:38 – Why Nat read this book at college. How Nat, improved his public speaking abilities after reading this book, following a suggestion he received during college. 2:04 – About Joe Navarro’s background as an FBI agent for 25 years. How he was able to include all his experience interrogating and what was suspicious or not in the many cases presented in the book. Example of Joe trying to figure out accomplices of a suspect, that was betrayed by his pupils when put under stress. 3:54 – Reference to Darwin: evolution is the foundation for body unconscious reactions. Behaviors are involuntary because they drive from the limbic system instead than from the frontal cortex. Joe stresses that nobody can really detect lies, but what you can detect is discomfort, and discomfort  may lead you to find a lie or information that not being shared. 6:56 – The key to body reading is to look for behavioral changes, rather than specific behaviors. 7:56 – The book is organized in chapters: 1. Commandments (guidelines for body reading), 2. How to pacify ourselves, 3. Reading each part of the body, 4. Deception. 8:40 – First Commandment: Look at behavior in context. Example: we feel cold when we are uncomfortable. 9:32 – Second Commandment: The idiosyncratic behaviors. Body contradicting what one is saying. Example of nodding while saying no. Example where the suspect said went right while moving the left hand. 10:22 – Fifth Commandment: Establishing baseline behaviors. Nat rolling his eye example. Neil's example running hands on his head when sleepy. 12:45 – Sixth Commandment: Always try to watch people for multiple tells, clustering of different behaviors. A single tell is not determinant. Why body language is much more communicative than spoken language. 15:27 – Limits of spoken language. We can pick someone's emotional state even if we don't have words for that. 18:25 – Gut feelings when you meet someone. Neil's example of a guy being elusive about payment. Having negative intuitions just because the other is “tribally” different. How to handle intuition’s contradictions and why we should to prefer the negative one. 23:03 – Cues. Watching people's shoulders will reveal feet excitement. Core of the behaviours. Describing each part of the body’s possible reactions. Each reaction comes in the flavour of some interaction of: freeze, flight, or fight. Freeze is the first reaction. Flight examples: turtle effect, pulling shoulders up to try to protect your neck, smaller neck in fighting poses. 31:20 – Pacifying behaviors: we do a lot of things to comfort ourselves, to distress, to feel more calm. There’s no intentionality in these reactions. Why dating advice can go bad: shoulder touching example. Why we don’t pics of ourselves smiling. Examples of forcing these reactions and trying to make them pass as natural. 37:57 – Sponsor time. Sip a Mushroom Coffee together with Neil. The mushroom coffee from Four Sigmatic energizes you with less caffeine. Neil is drinking the Chaga and Lion’s Mane mush stimulants that give a really soft caffeine bump. It feels much more clear than coffee. If you want to keep the taste of coffee without the caffeine, mushroom coffee is you perfect ally.  If you want something else to taste like coffee, try some Perfect Keto coffee flavored exogenous ketones. Check Nat’s article about a easy ketogenic diet. Ketones make it a lot easier to get into ketosis, and is perfect for weight loss or its cognitive benefits. Don’t forget to shop through our Amazon affiliate link to help sustain the show. Lots of people get sick in this season, Kettle & Fire bone broth helps you warm in this winter. It’s nice, it’s warm, it’s tasty. Listen Neil’s and Nat’s recipes and variations. There’s one that’s better than Chipotle’s! Finally, subscribe to the Mailing List to receive bonuses, giveaways, and more. Most of our tangents and goofing off are going there now. 44:15 – Looping back on the baseline commandment, we should recognize reactions beyond the baseline, and understand the reason behind. Different pacifying behaviors can indicate different mental states. Pacifiers scale with the intensity of the discomfort. 49:34 – Heuristics: “weighting” different parts of the body: facial cues are the least reliable, the face is the most likely to lie. The feet are the most honest ones. Gravity defined behaviors. Colloquial phrases tied with actual behaviors: walking with a bit of a bounce on your step, walking on air, turning your back on someone. 52:17 – Tangent. Reactions of protection inherited by evolution and survival from predators. Evolution is a great first principle heuristic for understanding a large span of topics. 57:54 – Tangent. Optionality trap in dating. Sex in our generation. Optionality trap in jobs. Youthful tendency to sit around and wait for the best option. 1:04:17 – Details of different situations for legs, chest and arms. Leg crossing, nodding up or down, tilting our heads to the side, feet pointing, turning away our chest, crossing arms, etc. When it is easy to force subconscious behaviors. Importance of arms for protection. Problems of helmets in American football. 1:11:46 – Face. Fake smile. “Keep your chin up”. Keeping good posture to feel more confident. The nasal flaring. People that lose sense of smell have a hard time establishing deep relationships. 1:16:09 – Deception. Most people including FBI agents are not better than chance detecting deception. But we have some clues to be suspicious. Synchrony, if what a suspect speaks jives his body language. And emphasis: “I have never seen or heard a person who is lying yell affirmatively, “I didn’t do it,” while pounding his fist on the table”. Paul J. Zak's proclivity for taking blood samples has earned him a nickname as the "vampire economist." But his sanguinary habit is backed by his scientifiic quest: What if there was a master switch for human behavior? On, and people are loving and generous. Off, and they revert to violence and greed. By studying thousands of blood samples, Zak has pinpointed just such a switch: a brain chemical called oxytocin. Sprinting around the globe and into the human brain, -The Moral Molecule is a dazzling narrative as erudite and entertaining as bestsellers like "Flow", "Drive", and "Why We Love". Paul J. Zak

He has been called a heartless, devilish, carpetbagger.  He is unapologetic about his mission to take the fun out of making video games.  He has inspired neo-folk protest songs.  He is Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision.  This week, we discuss one of gaming's most infamous characters and his influence on the medium.  We cover capitalism, sensational journalism, and some light conspiracy theory in an attempt to fight against the culture "of skepticism and pessimism and fear," perpetuated by everyone's favorite villain. Some discussion starters:- How does Kotick's business philosophy affect your perception of Activision-Blizzard and the titles it publishes?  To what extent are your more casually-interested friends and family aware of the business side of games?- Which (if any) company executives make a positive impression on you?  How do they this? - To what extent is Kotick simply playing role for the public?  Is this even plausible? To listen to the podcast:- Subscribe to the EXP Podcast via iTunes here.
