State's Up Episode 2 - Dec. 7, 2022 by

Welcome to another episode of Movies that Make Us! It's the start of a whole new month, so it's time for Staff Picks. This time we wanted to talk about Soundtracks and Scores. Film scores were traditionally performed by orchestras, and many still are, but today a film score might feature all manner of sounds and instruments. A film soundtrack is more a selection of songs chosen to be featured in a film.Val selected Up from Disney/Pixar, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with its diverse hip-hop soundtrack, and Creed, one of her modern favorites. Tracy suggests the 2006 film The Fountain, went back to his childhood for Rocky 4, and the movie Garden State with Natalie Portman. Jake chose The Lord of the Rings trilogy composed by the great Howard Shore, Tom Hanks' first directed film That Thing You Do, and The Wedding Singer. What are your thoughts on these picks? Twins talk it Up Episode 51: Empathetic Leadership So much has changed over the years as far as technology goes and the advancement of medicine; but the best tool for any physician may be that of empathy. In this episode, we welcome Dr. Melissa Li-Ng to share about the importance of empathetic leadership. Dr. Li-Ng is the Medical Director of International Operations at the Cleveland Clinic. She is also a Public Speaker and has spoken around the world. Dr. Li-Ng not only defines what empathy is but she shares with us about why is it so important for today's organizations? As a leader you need to also understand context - where others are coming from including their situation, history, environment and experiences. Without empathy, you can command tasks but you cannot change hearts and minds. Dr. Li-Ng speaks about the importance of self-care and how without self-care, the empathetic leader will eventually burnout. She also states how leaders need to be authentic in expressing their concern and care for their people. Empathy is expressed not just with words but also with listening and with action. Although empathy can be an innate trait, it can also be learned. Appreciate Dr. Li-Ng's encouragement for organizations to invest in leadership training and training around empathy. There are incredible costs and benefits for embracing a culture of empathy and for making training a part of their overall strategy. Listen for the correlation she makes of empathetic leadership impacting revenue. For more information about Dr. Melissa Li-Ng and her speaking, visit https://elitespeakerservices.com/speakers/melissa-li-ng/ ----more---- If you are looking to learn the art of audience engagement while listening for methods to conquer speaking anxiety, deliver persuasive presentations, and close more deals, then this is the podcast for you. Twins Talk it Up Episode 50: Naked Coaching What does it mean to be 'comfortable in your own skin'? How can being naked and exposed help you grow professionally? Now that your curiosity has been piqued, listen in on our conversation with Dr. Pat Williams about the importance of coaching, vulnerability and confidence in working with an executive coach. Dr. Pat Williams is a Master Certified Coach and a pioneer in the world of Coaching as he was one of the founding members of the International Coaching Federation (ICF). He founded additional organizations: The Institute for Life Coach Training; and Coaching the Global Village, an initiative to bring coaching methodologies to villages in developing countries and to leaders of non-profits and the nongovernmental organizations who serve them. Pat is also a member of the Forbes Coaching Council, is a much sought after speaker and an author/co-author of multiple books. We dig into his book, ‘Getting Naked: Emotional Transparency with the Right Person at the Right Time, in the Right Place'. He creatively uses imagery to convey that being comfortable with emotional nakedness (and not physical nakedness) is where transparency and vulnerability with the right people and at the right times can lead to an increase in self-awareness and magnificent opportunities for growth. Dr. Pat believes that great coaching is about 'discovery' as the partnership of coaching is to help unlock and help the professional answer the question of 'who are you' and stepping into what they want and into the unknown. We ask about his chapter entitled '50 shades of play' and ask him to share about the 6-step process or the tool of naked self-disclosure. These steps include: Recall, Reflect, Reveal (on paper), Reveal (to others), Reboot and Restart. Heather is an international speaker, the founder of Employee Fanatix, the host of the Leadership with Heart podcast and the author of the book, The Art of Caring Leadership: How Leading With Heart Uplifts Teams and Organizations. Heather shared that it was the 'end-user' who determines if the leader truly cares. You cannot have caring leadership without a certain level of vulnerability, transparency and authenticity. She also stated that we can even "authentically be a jerk". This is why self awareness is so important. Leaders that are people focused and heart focused, foster a culture of listening. Caring leadership engages the workforce and is about action - action that is consistent and shows kindness to those we lead. Heather also provided some insight into the ROI of caring leadership. You can measure caring leadership and in her book, Heather highlights 9 of the most common behaviors demonstrated by caring leaders. Be a caring leader and see the impact on your organization. Godwin is the host of the Digital Introverts Podcast, where introverts share their success and failure stories and discuss how they thrive in the digital age. We ask Godwin to define the terms extrovert, introvert and ambivert, and to share which has the advantage when it comes to leadership within our organizations. Are there any specific advantages that those who are more aligned as introverts have? How does culture and our society factor into this, and can we welcome diversity of thought? We also ask Godwin to share some of his thoughts on working with those who lean more toward introversion. Learning to be comfortable with silence and sharing appreciation can go a long way with creating a dynamic team. ----more---- If you are looking to learn the art of audience engagement while listening for methods to conquer speaking anxiety, deliver persuasive presentations, and close more deals, then this is the podcast for you. Twins Talk it Up Episode 39: Power of Affirmations In this episode, we speak with James and Becky Zheng. James and Becky are transformation coaches & entrepreneurs who help people live a life of design through education, mentorship, and ministry. James also runs The Morning MindSET Podcast where he shares practical wisdom on how to make proper mind shifts, empowering leaders to accomplish more impact and success in their lives. If you can win the morning, you can seize the day. Special surprise to learn that Becky is also a twin. We ask them to define what affirmatinos are and how they have used these positive statements to shape their own mindset. This habit or daily ritual also led to James starting the Morning MindSET podcast where he provides daily short positive uplifting messages. They talk about the conscious and the subconscious mind and how you can create new beliefs. Creating positive affirmations may be as simple as starting with "I am" statements. Statements such as I am beautiful, I am successful. The key is to connect these statements - these declarations on an emotional level and to say them consistently as if you are already there or that you have already accomplished your goals. The "last 4 letters of the word enthusiasm is iasm which can been seen as I Am Sold Myself." ----more---- If you are looking to learn the art of audience engagement while listening for methods to conquer speaking anxiety, deliver persuasive presentations, and close more deals, then this is the podcast for you. Twins Talk it Up Episode 36: Build your Brand Right In this episode, we meet with our good friend and fellow Howard University Bison Shala Graham. Shala is a brand strategist, speaker and writer. Shala shares about the importance of having a solid and effective brand. Your brand is your reputation. You have to be aware of your target audience and then manage that reputation while building upon your brand values. Your Brand is the foundation of your marketing. Think about the most valued brands in the world and what makes them so effective. Brands like Google, Amazon and Apple are extremely successful as they know their audience and they stay true to the areas/niches that they specialize in. This allows them to be the right fit and the right solution. Do you know who your audience is and are you firm in your niche? You may not be the right solution for everybody; but for somebody, you are the perfect solution. Shala poses the question of what makes your organization different. Twins Talk it Up Episode 35: Directing the Airways In this episode of Twins Talk it Up, we speak with Katlyn Lovelady. Katlyn is an air traffic controller and also serves in the Air National Guard. Communication skills are vital in the air space. Clarity of speech between Ground Control, the Tower and Aircraft is vital to ensure safety for both crew and the passengers they serve. Regarding intentional listening, Katlyn shared some incredible insight about being able to listen to the silence - that what is not being said can be just as important as what is being said. Having a calm and confident tone also is crucial to the overall success of the mission. As a leader, never let your ego get in the way of the goal. Lives are at stake. While others may only see 'their part', you as the leader must keep your focus on the big picture and communicate the plan. "They want to the plan to succeed as much as you do". Give everyone an opportunity to excel in their role and surprise you. Here are the 3 leadership lessons Katlyn said that she has learned through being an air traffic controller: 1. Say what you mean and mean what you say. 2. If you wouldn't want what you said "played back", then don't say it. 3. Tell the team your plan. Love Katlyn's confidence and the pride she has with being one of the few women in this role. You can do "hard things." Twins Talk it Up Episode 34: Skale up Your Performance In this episode, we speak with Jake Dunlap, CEO of Skaled Consulting. Skaled Consulting helps sales and marketing professionals as well as organizations scale more efficiently by using technology & consulting. We are grateful that Jake was able to join us despite the challenges due to a loss of power that the majority of the State of Texas was experiencing. Jake shares his thoughts about how the organizations that are thriving are those who pivot quickly to optimize & customize their sales processes and product set. He states that "the companies that are winning, do not hold onto the past. They are focused on what the buyer is doing and on what can I do to sale and get in front of them." The landscape has now changed and sales professionals need to become more proficient in the virtual space and grow in their soft skills such as public speaking and storytelling. In responding to the question of 'virtual fatigue', Jake shared that "every call you have is somebody's first experience with you and your company". You have to first be excited about your position and your product and then you have to be passionate about the buyers you serve. We speak about leveraging platforms and tools that best serve professionals and their organizations; and how vital it is to interact and stay connected with other leaders, prospects and clients. Jake was gracious enough to offer provide a link for a free 60-day trial of Sales Navigator.
