The Torme kids share their Torme Christmas memories which include their dad and contraband Christmas movies! Then Joel shares his family's history as a Ukrainian vaudeville acrobatic act that segued into the agency business when his Uncle, Johnny Hyde became VP of William Morris, discovered Marilyn Monroe and took on his young nephew, Norman to drive and accompany Marilyn to events.Starting in the mailroom, Norman worked his way up to CEO.  We hear about his working relationships with Marilyn Monroe, Kim Novak, Colonel Tom Parker, Dick Van Dyke, Gerald Ford, Mark Spitz, Barry Gordy and so many other greats.Joel talks about his complicated history with a father whose clients received his primary caregiving. Today on part two of our encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we continue our conversation with guests Daisy Torme and James Torme. And that can only mean one thing: more great stories about growing up the children of The Velvet Fog, Mel Torme, one of the greatest voices in all Jazz history. We speak to Daisy and James not only about their father but also their mother, actress Janette Scott. Terrific stories abound. We hear about spending the Summer in Los Angeles with their dad, a bonkers story about how their parents met and there's a heart-warming/hear breaking story about leaving their dad at the airport and returning home to England. Speaking of England, we learn more about their childhood as both their mother and grandmother Dame Thora Hild were nothing short of national figures in the U.K. I mean really, doesn't everyone's mother have an annual film festival in their honor or is namedropped in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Isn't everyone's grandmother a three-time BAFTA winner? But what makes this episode so terrific in our view is how enthusiastic Daisy and James were to talk about their parents and how much love and affection they exuded in doing so. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story. Take a listen.

Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking with Daisy Torme and James Torme, the children of singer/musician Mel Torme actress Janette Scott. This episode was a true pleasure to record as not only were there terrific Mel & Janette stories but also some great stories about out host, Josh's dad as well. You see Mel and Martin Mills were buddies from as far back as the fifties who were runnin' young guns in the entertainment business in New York during the Eisenhower administration. They formed strong bonds in their youth and it extended into old age…with some more-than-occasional bouts of silence for some misperceived slight or two. In a sense, our conversation was a familial one as it felt like the next generation was reliving their parents together with stories about everything from photography to chocolate, from childish pranks to hanging with Buddy Rich and Sammy Davis Jr and much more. We talk “The Christmas Song”, Mountain Dew, Night Court & even a little known movie of Mel's “Challenge to Survive” with William Shatner. What began as a Twitter message to Daisy became a lunch, then another lunch and soon it became a full-blown Rarified Heir Podcast episode. So take a moment, set your internal clock back and let's take listen to Daisy and James Torme talk about their father, The Velvet Fog, Mel Torme. Lucky for you that this is only part one! Part two is next week! Everyone has a story.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to family. Our guests this week are Daisy Torme and James Torme, the children of legendary singer (and musician and songwriter and arranger and author et all) Mel Torme, aka The Velvet Fog.) This is a special episode because of how it began – with a message over Twitter that reconnected our host Josh Mills with Daisy and James after losing touch a long time ago. You see, Josh's dad, music publisher and later photographer Martin Mills was one quarter of a four-headed hydra of best friends that included Mel Torme, perhaps the greatest drummer of all-time, Buddy Rich and iconic entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. They were four friends who lived life in the fast lane after the end of WWII in New York and then in Los Angeles when each was breaking big in their field. In fact, you can read all about it in the Sammy Davis Jr. biography Yes I can. This is the first of a two part episode because frankly, we talked a lot. It had been a long time. We talked about Mel's roots on the South Side of Chicago, his love of movies, the story behind writing one of the biggest holiday tunes of all-time “The Christmas Song,” his Mountain Dew commercials in the 80s, how he missed out on a secret code name, a little-known TV movie produced by William Shatner called “Challenge to Survive” with Mel as a mountain man, Mel and the Mel-Tones and much more. It's a lot of silly, fun, outrageous talk on part one of our conversation with Daisy Torme and James Torme and it's all right here on the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Does this song help put you in the Christmas spirit? That song was written by Mel Torme. He was born and raised in Chicago. He first sang in public and at age 4, wrote his first song at age 13, and was an actor in a radio show by his teens. From the 1940s through the 1990s, Mel Torme established himself as one of America's favorite and most popular singers, songwriters, and the Rangers. He acquired a nickname: The Velvet Fog. In 1988, when he wrote his autobiography, he actually called o. Ot Wasn't All Velvet. And that's what I met him.

The good news was that turkey season is now officially underway.  Jeff shared his story about bagging his first of the season, and Kirk shared his story of, well, almost bagging his first.  But don't be fooled – the story is fantastic, even though it didn't end with a gobbler getting folded up. One important note: not saying this episode was built to go sideways, but when Kirk brings in the best rum cake ever baked…

The non-violent overthrow of Czechoslovakia's communist government in 1999 was called the Velvet Revolution; growing up in St. Louis, the preferred ice cream of my youth was called Velvet Freeze; and the late crooner Mel Torme was called the Velvet Fog (or to those who weren't fans, the Velvet Frog.) But to me the most deserving object of the designation "velvet" is red velvet cake -- a rich relative of devil's food cake only with a distinctive red color and frosted with white icing for contrast. Red velvet cake was all the rage years ago, but its popularity has faded since the 1970s amid safety concerns about the red food coloring in use back then to tint the cake. Perhaps it's time to bring red velvet cake back. Today's red food coloring is perfectly safe and after all, the cake is a uniquely American invention. We'll probably never know who the first person was to create a red velvet cake. The recipe is what culinary professionals call a "grass roots" recipe, meaning it's the sort

This episode we sit down with one of the longest standing team members at Wild Rose, the head brewer at the AF23 taproom, Mark Kerrigan. As a 15 year veteran and employee #6, Mark has a lot of insight into how the brewery has evolved and gives us an inside look at what’s changed during that time at the brewery and in Calgary’s beer scene at large. Mark’s career in the beer industry started in London Ontario on the packaging line for Labatt’s as a summer job. After finishing up his degree Mark tossed in a resume and was asked to come learn how to brew. Mark would later meet his wife, a Calgarian, on a trip to Europe and follow her back to Calgary. At the time there wasn’t much for breweries to work at, but Wild Rose would make him a job offer over the phone and in the decade and a half since then Mark has been able to watch the brewery and the team grow. In those 15 years a lot of things have changed, but many other things have stayed the same. Walking in as Wild Rose’s sixth employee the core lineup of beers we know today was already in place, although the recipes have changed a little as the palates of Calgarians changed throughout the craft beer boom of the last decade. Mark remembers bringing Velvet Fog to parties and having to explain that there was in fact nothing wrong with this cloudy beer, or having people turned off by the IPA which at the time was much less hoppy than the IPA today, and WAY less hoppy than many other IPAs available throughout the city. With expanding palates comes the opportunity to push boundaries in brewing and Mark tells us about the weirdest beer he’s ever made on the brewery’s 30 litre test system… a dill pickle beer. If you’ve been watching Wild Rose’s Instagram account you’ll know that this experiment inspired by a twist on a traditional gose ended up on the Brewer’s Tap, and was such a big hit it was gone in just a single day. After we chat with Mark we’ve got questions for Mama T that were submitted by listeners like you! This time around we find out she would take to a deserted island, her beauty tips for stranded people, and how to catch fish with an axe and a surfboard. Another episode of the Graphic Novice Comic Book Podcast hits the airwaves with Nickel & The Velvet Fog.  As a tribute to the Suicide Squad movie, internet issues forced us to go back and re-record several parts of this episode, delaying its release. In the initial "General Banter" segment, now renamed, "Bullshittin'" we discuss the Alberta fires, Doc Thirst's birthday, the Fantastic Four movie, Jeff Nau's appearance on the Latest "Book Club" episode, VF's recent and future travels, vintage Nintendo systems and games, and Danger Entertainment contract negotiations. "Comic News" is a little light this week, but we do play the bumper for all the Creed fans out there...  Looking at you Bryan from Salty Language... "Marvel Trivia" is reduced to one question each...  due to the extended "Bullshittin'" segment. Our second attempt at "Rapid-Fire Review" goes a little smoother once our internet issues are resolved.  We discuss Batman, Detective Comics, Batgirl, Amazing Spider-Man, Moon Knight, Punisher, The Vision, Uncanny X-Men, Nailbiter, Lazarus, Low, Manifest Destiny, Rai, and 4001 A.D. We sneak in some discussion of the Spider-Porsche, and the History of Bad Ideas podcast before calling it quits this week. Thanks for listening.

Gary Butterfield, Kole Ross, and Zack Johnson open a hailing frequency to talk about Star Control II. The Ur-Quan and their battle thralls have dominated this quadrant of the galaxy, and it's up to a human crew with some Precursor technology to reunite the Alliance of Free Stars and act as liberators. This is a game that defies categorization. Part space combat arcade game, part resource gathering, part adventure game... the larger picture of all of these pretty little parts is an engrossing world filled with varied and interesting species and civilizations, each with their own stories to tell. This ranks really high up there on our list of favorite games we've done on the show, and we really recommend you check it out.
