In this “extra helpings” episode where Matt shares even more thoughts from his recent CoasterNerdCon trip, Matt and Josh talk about why being present matters, and how attractions can create experiences that guests want to relive. Being Present in the Moment “I really wanted to just be present in the moment, and I wanted to take a picture with my mind instead of with my phone.” There is a balance between documenting experiences and fully enjoying them. From concerts to fireworks and theme parks, Matt and Josh reflect on how photos can preserve memories, yet they rarely recreate the emotions of actually being there. Guests should experience special moments firsthand rather than view everything through a camera lens. Experiences Go Beyond the Camera “Get out and experience it.” Roller coaster POV videos, virtual reality, and ride photography are all ways to capture the experience. While videos and photos can spark excitement, they cannot reproduce the physical sensations, atmosphere, sounds, and emotions of being on an attraction. Additionally, attraction photography creates lasting keepsakes without distracting guests from living the experience in real time. Bottling the Perfect Park Day “Well, the park is the bottle.” Inspired by a conversation at Knoebels, Matt explores the idea of "bottling" the feeling of a perfect day at a park. However, operators already package memorable experiences through the environment, attractions, food, and guest interactions. They also acknowledge that while consistency is important, the variety of each visit is what keeps guests coming back for something new. Creating Reasons to Return “One of the things I talk about from a guest experience standpoint is planting the seed for the next visit.” Exceptional guest experience extends beyond today's visit. By highlighting attractions guests have not yet experienced, encouraging different ways to enjoy familiar attractions, and promoting future opportunities, attractions can naturally inspire repeat visitation without relying solely on discounts or promotions. When Audio Becomes Part of the Attraction “It truly enhances the experience.” On-ride audio, synchronized music, and storytelling can elevate an attraction. Weather changes, attractions close, schedules shift, and unexpected challenges can quickly derail expectations. During Matt's recent road trip, “CoasterNerdCon 2026,” he gained several lessons on how flexibility, meaningful human connections, and thoughtful leadership can transform those moments into memorable experiences. In this episode, Matt and Josh talk about flexibility, authentic connections, operational observations, and the leadership lessons that emerged from CNC26. Flexibility creates better experiences “You've got to remain flexible so you don't get bent out of shape.” Matt reflects on his annual coaster road trip, where changing weather, ride closures, air quality concerns, and unexpected schedule changes required constant adjustments. Instead of allowing those disruptions to define the vacation, the group focused on what they could control and embraced new opportunities. This mindset is connected to leadership, explaining that successful leaders recognize what is beyond their control and redirect their energy toward creating the best possible outcome for their teams and guests. The best memories often come from unexpected connections “We didn't create it; we allowed it to happen.” An early park closure at Cedar Point unexpectedly led to one of the trip's most memorable experiences when Matt's group shared dinner with complete strangers who quickly became friends. The conversation expands into how spontaneity often creates the moments guests remember most. The lesson learned is that we should leave room for organic experiences instead of trying to script every detail, both in our personal lives and in leadership. Small interactions leave lasting impressions “Without saying a word, I felt like we had made a connection.” Matt shares a simple series of interactions with a Hersheypark team member that evolved from a smile to a wave, then a high five, and finally a sincere handshake. Genuine hospitality is not always loud or theatrical. Consistent acknowledgment, enthusiasm, and personal recognition communicate to guests that they matter. The conversation reinforces that strong relationships are built through repeated, authentic interactions, rather than one extraordinary moment. Looking beyond the numbers “The numbers don't tell the whole story.” Throughout the discussion, Matt highlights observations from several parks that sparked leadership conversations. He praises Kings Island's consistent parting greetings, Holiday World's remarkable cleanliness, and a standout food and beverage team member at Knoebels whose patience exemplified exceptional hospitality. Every year, Matt embarks on a coaster-packed adventure known as CoasterNerdCon (CNC), and this time, the journey took him across Europe to explore some of the continent's most iconic theme parks. While the thrills were plenty, the biggest takeaways came from the unique operational practices, cultural nuances, and creative design elements that make European parks distinct. In this episode, Matt and Josh talk about Matt's CNC 2025 trip and what the U.S. attractions industry can learn from parks in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and beyond. Parking Efficiency and Operational Design "You pay for parking on the way out." In contrast to the standard U.S. practice of paying for parking upon arrival, European parks often collect parking fees as guests exit. This adjustment alleviates early morning bottlenecks and allows guests to flow into the parks more smoothly. Matt noted the process was surprisingly efficient, especially when paired with mobile QR code systems. Cultural Influence on Park Hours and Expectations "Europeans want to go home for dinner." Many parks Matt visited closed as early as 6 or 7 PM—a surprising shift from the late-night hours common in the United States. This practice aligns with European cultural norms around evening family dinners, emphasizing how societal values shape operational decisions, even at the cost of potential late-night revenue. Quiet Platforms and Safety through Simplicity "There were no loud spiels... just a thumbs up and you go." Matt observed that European ride platforms are notably quieter than their American counterparts. Without booming safety announcements, parks rely on body language, gestures, and rider intuition—reflecting a different approach to liability and guest trust, possibly stemming from less litigious cultures. Laughter is Universal "Smiles, laughter… it doesn't matter what language you're speaking." Whether at a German theme park or a splash pad in Chicago, Matt and Josh reflected on how joy transcends language. Laughter, excitement, and human connection provide a universal language—an important reminder for guest-facing teams everywhere. The Power of Industry Connections "You must be one of us." Matt recounted how introductions from one industry peer led to behind-the-scenes access, personal tours, and new friendships. These moments underscore the importance of professional networking within the attractions industry and the unique camaraderie shared by theme park enthusiasts. Constraints Fuel Creativity "There's no trademark on creativity." Parks like Efteling and Phantasialand thrive despite physical limitations like land usage caps or height restrictions. Instead of seeing these as barriers, they use them to drive innovation. Layered layouts, immersive theming, and integrated storytelling show how limitations can lead to imaginative breakthroughs. Authenticity vs. Theming "Is it still theming when it feels this real?" Europa Park's recreation of European countries felt so authentic that Matt questioned whether it crossed from themed design into genuine reality. Unlike caricature-style lands, these parks replicate realistic environments with subtlety and accuracy—offering immersion without overstated fantasy. Cross-Cultural Communication "Body language and gestures became our best tools." Though Matt doesn't speak German or Dutch, navigating the parks was easier than expected thanks to signage, body language, and intuitive design. The experience heightened his empathy for international visitors to U.S. parks and reinforced the value of non-verbal communication. Reawakening the Park Brain "I was using a part of my brain I hadn't used in a while." Visiting unfamiliar parks reactivated Matt's instincts as a theme park guest. Without relying on familiarity, he had to think critically and observe cues—an experience that reminded him how important way finding and signage are for first-time visitors. Doing More Than You Have To "They didn't have to do that—but they did." Matt highlighted dozens of examples where parks went beyond expectations: themed observation decks, treetop walkways, immersive queue shows, and even whimsical guardrails. These touches exemplify how small creative choices elevate the entire experience and build long-term guest loyalty. From logistics to laughter, from constraints to creativity, CNC 2025 provided Matt with profound insights into what makes theme parks in Europe not just operationally efficient but emotionally impactful. Whether it's walking a new path, connecting with a fellow professional, or reimagining what's possible within your budget, there are countless lessons to be found when you look beyond your own borders. Welcome back to Not Fintech Investment Advice, where Simon Taylor and I talk about fintech companies that we're definitely not giving investment advice on! The theme of this episode is infrastructure galore. We kick things off with Ubyx, who are essentially building the Visa for stablecoins–a network of merchants, issuers, and acquirers with a standardized incentive and legal structure that could help stablecoins finally qualify as cash equivalents. We're not yet at the Visa moment of mass merchant adoption and real interoperability pain (all pain points are still mostly theoretical), but Ubyx is betting that moment's coming fast. They're one to watch, especially if you love good nerdy whitepaper... Next up, Codex. They recently raised a seed round (with participation from Coinbase and Circle, among others) to build a layer 2 blockchain network specifically for stablecoins. Codex wants to be the sleek payments rail for stablecoins, and while “just another blockchain” fatigue is real, there's logic in going vertical. They're also pitching themselves as a liquidity hub, which, if it works, could be a major edge in reducing fragmentation. Then, there's Agent AV, which is basically Shopify for AI agents. They're tackling the wild west of agentic commerce, where bots now shop on our behalf. E-commerce was built to keep bots out—but now, humans are deploying bots on their behalf. The challenge, then, is separating the good bots (authorized agents) from the bad. That's why a two-sided mode, building for both agents and merchants, makes a lot of sense. It's early days, but they might be laying rails for a whole new kind of shopping experience. And finally, the dark horse of the episode: Experian. Yes, that Experian. They just launched a new cashflow-based credit score and, in a twist, are skipping the bottom of the data stack to go full-FICO. In an open banking world, they don't want to be the bureau—they want to be the scorer. Coaster Nerd Con is the yearly trek by Matt and two friends to ride as many roller coasters as they can in an 8 or 9 day period. This year, the trip included stops at Six Flags Great Adventure, Knoebels Amusement Resort, Hersheypark, Lakemont Park, Kennywood, Kings Island, Kentucky Kingdom, Holiday World, Indiana Beach Boardwalk Resort and Cedar Point. In this episode, Matt shares his observations and experiences and he and Josh turn them into valuable operational lessons.   First, Matt shares some of his favorite, most memorable moments of the trip - some that were directly influenced by the park and employees, others that were made possible by the atmosphere the park created. By discussing these individual moments, Matt and Josh drew connections between them and linked them to the intersection of guest and employee experience.   Next, Josh and Matt discuss the following observations and how they relate to a successful guest and employee experience. Make feedback easy - Six Flags had large posters with a QR code for guests to leave positive feedback for their team members. Sound/Audio matters - whether a ride spiel or a storytelling element in an attraction, if people can't hear or understand what's being said, a large portion of the story and experience is lost. Presentation matters - from Hersheypark's Ferris wheel appetizers to Kings Island's employees, the visual impression of your experience cannot be underestimated, both from the guest and employee perspective. Don't forget the human component of a tech-driven world - at Kennywood, even though the process for buying and using the skip-the-line pass was done completely from your phone, they still had people standing by to help answer questions and for “emotional support.” How do you say goodnight or goodbye to your guests (or employees)? An interview with Mike, owner of Vintage Games and Junque. We are talking about the upcoming Steel City NerdCon being held this July 2 at the Bushplane Museum in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Mike and his wife Beth have been in the pop culture business for about 7 years. Approximately 5 years ago they decided the town needed some excitement. They organized the first NerdCon and held it in the back of their building. It was a huge success. With the exception of Covid, there has been an event every year since. Vendors come from all over Ontario to sell their items. This year there are people coming from Quebec. The event gets bigger and better each year. Usually NerdCon is held in September or October. To try something new, the Vintage Games crew decided to try a summer event. They don't know how it's going to go over, especially because it's the Canada Day long weekend. However, the event is occurring at the same time as Poutine Fest. Multiple poutine vendors will be selling their delicious food only a block from the NerdCon space. Cross promotion is on everyone's mind. Also in this little chat, Mike talks about his store. Vintage Games and Junque started out in a 400 square foot space. They next year they expanded into an 800 square foot location. For the past 5 years they have been at their current 3500 square foot building at 165 Queen Street East. Mike describes the shop as a really expensive thrift store. Yet, walking in, it does not have that thrift store feel. You can see how everything is curated and placed with care. Items range from antiques, video games and comics to classic toys, comic books, signs and so much more.
