Episode 1603: Our article of the day is Star Control 3.
My guest today is Ken Levine, creative director and co-founder of Irrational and now Ghost Story Games, and the creative force behind some of the most iconic titles in video game history including System Shock 2, Thief and the Bioshock Series. We talk about the physical thrill of early mechanical games, his bad news bears-esque teenage deliquency - bumming smokes and playing arcades - his bumpy path into video game design via Hollywood and how the theatre prepared him for running a video game studio. We talk about why the original Castle Wolfenstein was so stressful, how obscure gem Herzog Zwei should get way more credit, why Rocksmith is one of the best games he's ever played and how the Legend of Zelda ruined a relationship. Jeremy and LeGrande substite a news show for a VIDEO GAMES show, because it's that time of year. We pick a couple of games that play around with the idea of boredom, intentionally or unintentionally, and we're going to explore our own reactions and analyze ourselves deeply. Jeremy played Death Stranding and does his best to candidly explain what the heck is going on. He compares Final Fantasy 15, Dark Souls, Metal Gear, and others. Good comparisons? You decide. LeGrande digs into the reincarnation of one of his favorite series, Star Control Origins, but how does it strike him in 2019? The gaming world is full of surprises, and oddness that we have to deal with. Reso talks about Press X to Jason's joke about "Ethics in Journalism", Star Control settles its suit in the most creative way, EA actually manages to eat its own foot, and Square Enix "Ethics Department". There was a lot of news that came out of E3, but I really screwed up trying to get Ultimate and now have three years worth of Xbox Live Gold codes I can't use. Beat Saber got a DLC pack full of Imagine Dragons songs. Konami announced the TurboGrafx-16! Final Fantasy VIII is finally being remastered! Banjo-Kazooie is in Smash! Animal Crossing was delayed to 2020, and Nintendo's new President Doug Bowser says it was to preserve work-life balance for the development team. Shenmue 3 was announced to be an Epic Games Store exclusive for one year, and they aren't refunding Kickstarter backers who wanted a Steam version. The Star Control lawsuit between Stardock and the original creators is now over, and all parties seem happy. Gamestop is shutting down ThinkGeek and will roll their products into the Gamestop stores. Amazon quietly laid off many people in it's Amazon Game Studios division, having them seek other opportunities within Amazon or take a severance package. Then we take calls about Beat Saber licensing, Elite: Dangerous in VR, and if E3 is dead or not.
It's time to get back into the swing of things with the video game news of the week! LeGrande, Dale, and Jeremy are back on track and we're going to drag you (kicking and screaming) with us! To the great surprise and happiness of many Star Control fans (myself included), it was announced yesterday that Stardock and Paul Reiche & Fred Ford have amicably settles the legal mess surrounding the rights to Star Control. Not only that but they did so in a way that will allow both of them to keep making their own games for the series and also, the agreement contains some hilarious, legally binding clauses that only this group would have come up with. It's a great day for Star Control fans and I talk about the agreement and why I think this is such a great thing. Sorozatajánlók: Doom Patrol egyre inkább, The Dragon Prince második évad szintén, The Last Ship egyáltalán nem, de mindenek előtt leginkább: Love, Death + Robots. Emellé gyorsjelentés a frontról: Overlord. After a bruising takedown fight, Star Control: Origins is once again available for purchase on Steam, and all without a court order for one side or the other. What does this mean for Stardock and Star Control going forward? What can we read into Valve and Steam's willingness to reject the safe harbor liability protection afforded by the DMCA? With Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford having now disclosed evidence of their claims against Stardock and Star Control: Origins, it's clear that they are challenging infringement based on the "look and feel" of the game, rather than the component assets. Why should such a claim make the industry nervous? And just how can the DMCA be better drafted to prevent more spurious claims? One of gaming's biggest legal scuffles of 2018 has apparently boiled over as Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford have issued a DMCA takedown notice against Star Control: Origins and Stardock, causing both Steam and GOG to remove the game. What is the reason behind the notice? How does the DMCA work? Why are Steam and GOG all but required to follow the instructions of the takedown due to the language of the Copyright Act? And what does this mean for Star Control, Stardock, and future use or abuse of the DMCA? Subscribe on iTunes! https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/game-talk-radio/id1231907355?mt=2 On this weeks episode I talk about the Overwatch "Ellie" debacle, the battle over the rights to Star Control, and address why the Wii U is suddenly having a price increase for new consoles.
I highly recommend listening to the prior episode on this first: https://anchor.fm/geekbravado/episodes/Episode-20-Jan-2---2019---The-Star-Control-Legal-Mess-e2s7mq Since I recorded my original episode on this issue, Paul Reiche & Fred Ford have finally come out with a list of what from Star Control II they believe Star Control: Origins is infringing on, in order to justify their having the game pulled from sale. Their claims are to put it mildly, dubious. As a passionate fan who has emotional investment in this matter resolving amicably and has tried to remain as neutral and objective as possible, it's getting harder and harder to have sympathy for Paul & Fred here. I go into this with a way that probably most demonstrates the "Bravado" that this show is titled after: Stardock forum thread showing Fred & Paul's claims, along with their refutation: https://forums.starcontrol.com/492870/at-long-last-reiche-and-ford-state-what-they-think-they-own A modified version of the claims chart, showing how nearly everything Paul & Fred claim is infringing, are things that Star Control II also infringes from StarFlight, a game from a decade prior: http://www.viridiangames.com/images/updatedchart.png Virtual Legality #11-2: Look, Feel, and the DMCA (Hoeg Law): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgmX2GHF88o Buy a Steam key for Star Control: Origins for 50% off (while supplies last): https://www.stardock.com/games/starcontrol/store#purchase
Star Control II from the 90s if my favourite game of all-time and recently, Stardock Entertainment released a spiritual successor called Star Control: Origins, that is among my favourite games of 2018. Starting late in the game's development, the original creators of the Star Control series entered into a heated legal battle with Stardock, resulting in a lot of public mud slinging and most recently, Star Control: Origins being pulled from Steam and GOG due to DMCA complaints made with very suspiciuous timing. It's a very complicated issue with no clear indication of who is fully in the right. I discuss the mess from a hardcore fan's perspective and though I believe it appears Stardock is more in the right here, try to provide as balanced a perspective as I can and also appeal to both sides to try and figure this out, for the fan's sake. Though these are long, I highly recommend reading and watching the following if you want to be informed of just how complicated this dispute is: Stardock Q&A: https://www.stardock.com/games/starcontrol/article/487690/qa-regarding-star-control-and-paul-and-fred Virtual Legality Episode from Hoeg Law: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVJIgLnDbcQ Leonard French Video (Part 1): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it50gS5yYB4 Leonard French Video (Part 2): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yochP8F69LY

Triumph and victory -- are they the same thing? Sometimes, but not always. On today's breathtaking episode of Battle Bards, the team tackles triumphant (and victorious!) themes from MMORPGs, trying to nail down what, exactly, makes a track fit in this category. Also, Syl totally breaks the rules of the show's format and she doesn't even apologize. That's how much of a rebel she is. Episode 83 show notes Intro (feat. We're about to launch! From its humble origins in Spacewar! to better known entries like Elite and Star Control 2, and even some weirder Japanese games like Star Cruiser and Infinite Space. Finally, we look to the future to see how Star Citizen is shaping up, and to voice our excitement for next week's long-awaited arrival of No Man's Sky. Also, we play the Witcher 3, ADR1FT, Earth Defense Force 4.1, Twilight Struggle, Star Realms, I am Setsuna and Oxenfree: Director's Cut.
Gary Butterfield, Kole Ross, and Zack Johnson open a hailing frequency to talk about Star Control II. The Ur-Quan and their battle thralls have dominated this quadrant of the galaxy, and it's up to a human crew with some Precursor technology to reunite the Alliance of Free Stars and act as liberators. This is a game that defies categorization. Part space combat arcade game, part resource gathering, part adventure game... the larger picture of all of these pretty little parts is an engrossing world filled with varied and interesting species and civilizations, each with their own stories to tell. This ranks really high up there on our list of favorite games we've done on the show, and we really recommend you check it out. Time for episode 43 where I'll be talking about a group of WWII flight sims from Lucasarts, Battlehawks 1942, Their Finest Hour: Battle of Britain and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. As always though, the news: 7th Guest 3: The Collector has restarted a new crowd funding campaign with a more reasonable goal. Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics have been removed from both GoG and Steam due to rights transfer. Wired.co.uk did a great interview with the managing director of GoG.com. Stardock has announced they are actively working on a new Star Control game. We then get to the main topic, the Lucasarts flight sims. We have a great discussion of the history of these three games plus one more I hadn't heard of. Next time, I'll be talking RTS with Dune. Enjoy!
The time has come for episode 16 where I cover the great 1990 game series from Toys for Bob, Star Control. Before I even get to the news, a small program note: From now on, the show will be releasing on Sundays instead of Thursday as it has been in the past. Housekeeping aside, news time! Hero-U, the new game project from Lori and Corey Cole, creators of Quest for Glory now has an active kickstarter! If you want to give to this project, go check out their page. Big news over at GoG.com, they have released over 50 games with native mac support! OSX-ers rejoice! The developer of Boxer, who is working with them also posted a great article talking details of his work. Finally, SimCity 5 now has a release date! After an email, we get to the main topic, the great Star Control series. I cover all the usual suspects for the first two games in the set. We end off with an email and a cool look into the lego community with a set of Star Control ships competing to be made into a real licensed lego set! If you want to see these happen put in your vote.
