This week on Game Pass or Pass, we're hitting rewind and pressing play on Mixtape, the coming-of-age road trip adventure from Beethoven & Dinosaur and Annapurna Interactive. More than just a narrative game, Mixtape is a love letter to music, memory, and the awkward, exhilarating moments that define growing up. We dive into how the game's soundtrack drives the entire experience, why its unapologetically linear design feels more like playing through a favorite album than a traditional video game, and whether that approach helps or hurts the experience. We also explore the debate surrounding Mixtape's "indie" label. With a major publisher, a licensed soundtrack, and production values that rival much larger releases, where does it fit in today's gaming landscape? As the line between indie and AAA continues to blur, Mixtape has become part of a larger conversation about what "indie" even means anymore. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In the sixtieth episode of Making Mt. Rushmore, host/moderator Steve Riddle welcomes Jeremy Nichols and Mirandia Berthhold to discuss which Video Game Songs deserve a place on their respective lists. Is the original Super Mario Bros. theme a no-brainer? What about the Overworld Theme from the Legend of Zelda? Does the Wii Sports theme grab a spot? Does Nearly Civilized from James Bond 007: Nightfire or Sweden from Minecraft deserve a place? After that, they discuss which Video Game Soundtracks will be part of that grouping. Can you argue that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City/Stories shouldn't get a spot? Will Mega Man 2 be included? Is World of Warcraft in the conversation? What about The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time?

This week on The Free Cheese, hear that? We discuss soundtracks that made an impact on us and on other video games. Rather than focus on the "best" soundtracks (although we save some time for that as well), we look at soundtracks that feel important.
On this week's episode, we're talking about our favorite video game soundtracks... but not the usual dusty old classics, we're not mooning over NES DuckTales or those Donkey Kong games. We're picking the best of the past ten years! (With a couple asterisks for re-releases. Hey, if DLC can win a Game of the Year award, we can give a remaster a listen!) Also in this episode... – AND FOR YOU: a free Steam code! – PLUS: Astro Bot, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Ranma 1/2! Send us a textWhat makes a video game unforgettable? Could it be the challenge, the story, or perhaps the music? In this episode, we take a journey through the world of video game soundtracks that have left a lasting mark on our gaming lives. Mitch kicks off with his passion for the epic and haunting music of Elden Ring, particularly how it amps up the adrenaline during boss fights and dragon encounters. Meanwhile, Tom takes us back to the early 2000s with his love for the iconic Halo 2 soundtrack that shaped his multiplayer adventures. Together, we explore how these soundtracks become the heartbeat of our gaming experiences, intertwining with our emotions and etching unforgettable memories.Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and we feel it deeply as we reminisce about the soundtracks that transport us back to simpler times. From the dramatic scores of the Batman Arkham series to the orchestral magic of "Shadows of the Empire" on the Nintendo 64, these musical masterpieces have a unique way of capturing the essence of their respective games. We toast to the synth and orchestral blend of Mass Effect, the catchy 8-bit nostalgia of "Ninja Turtles 2" on the NES, and even the less celebrated yet delightful tunes of Chrono Trigger. These discussions highlight how soundtracks do more than just accompany our games—they elevate our entire gaming experiences. But the excitement doesn't end with music. Our episode brings a playful twist with trivia segments that challenge our knowledge and spark a friendly rivalry. From the original 150 Pokémon trivia to the intricate mechanics of Warzone 2.0, we test each other with rapid-fire questions. Add in some light-hearted movie trivia, and we promise laughs and surprises as we connect seemingly unrelated characters and scenes. Whether you're a fan of gaming soundtracks or just love a good trivia challenge, this episode is packed with engaging conversations and a healthy dose of nostalgia.Support the show

Think back on some of the most iconic moments in movie history. Think about the exact moment when the Avengers assembled for the first time in New York City. Think about when Sam and Frodo were lying on the side of Mount Doom near the brink of death, so close to finishing their quest. The score has an unquantifiable impact on the scene; it elevates, depresses, excites, or frightens us. Musical scores and soundtracks when done really well transform a great story into a masterpiece. It's also true with video games, which is something not a lot of people realize. The industry is bigger than ever, but gamers are still a fraction of the population compared to moviegoers, so they can be forgiven for not realizing that some of the greatest stories and musical scores are found in video games, whether we're talking just a specific song or the whole damned album. Today we're talking about our Top 5 Video Game Soundtracks. To enhance the discussion we didn't share our lists with each other and by no means are we experts in this or any other category. We are just a few gamers who like to discuss nonsense. The Top 5 Podcast is hosted by Zach Rancourt, Eric Schoen, and Thomas Lockhart. Rob Kovacs is a classical trained pianist, singer/songwriter, and composer. He recently released the soundtrack for the game Straylight. Rob performs classic video game soundtracks on piano as 88-Bit, and he also writes and records indie rock music under his own name. I met Rob at the Long Island Retro Gaming Expo last summer where he performed as 88-Bit, playing piano renditions of classic video game soundtracks. On this episode, we had a great conversation about his work as 88-bit, his indie rock music, and his new soundtrack for the game Straylight. Rob spoke about composing for video games and how the limitations of the early sound chips resulted in inventive and creative approaches to composition.
