Over The Rainbow is the second episode of a 360 video trilogy by Craig Quintero (see my interview about All That Remains from Venice 2022). Quintero is the artistic director of Riverbed Theatre, a Taipei-based performance group that has been doing 1-on-1 experimental theatre shows. Quintero has been translating these 1-on-1 shows into 360 videos in a way that transcends the audience's expectations, in a way that is very much inspired by the performance work of Marilyn Arsem. I had a chance to catch up with Quintero to talk about his philosophy of storytelling, the influence of Arsem on his work, and the role of associative memories. The Fury is a two-channel video installation in combination with a 360 video that "explores sexual exploitation of female political prisoners, referencing the Islamic Republic of Iran's brutal treatment of political prisoners." Director Shirin Neshat is an established visual artist, photographer, video artist, and filmmaker who collaborated with Khora CTO and co-founder Peter Fisher who led the 360 video production. The two-channel video installation is told in three different parts, and the VR puts you in the middle part of the story. I had a chance to catch up with Neshat and Fisher at Tribeca Immersive to unpack their process of producing the piece, how a two-channel video installation invites a view to choose how to edit the piece, how Neshat prefers that audiences will see the film to get the full context of the piece, and the preferred order to watch it. Tribeca was showing the VR portion before the video installation, and I found it to be a really powerful piece and combination of being immersed within the VR portion, and then being able to reference my own embodied memories in watching the full context of the two-channel video installation. 0:14 Hello, and thank you very much for listening to this episode of The Billy Newman photo podcast. 0:23 I'm showing another photograph of mine today, this one from Mount Washington up in the Cascades. It's a really beautiful spot. And I appreciated this, this day to photograph it because of those high altitude clouds that you see in the photograph with a lot of that dark rich color, and it seems like a lot of I don't know if it's moisture thickness, or density, or just the parts of it were thinner, and there's passing cloud or something like that. But I loved the light that day, it was sort of a vanilla color. At least in the higher part. You see those dark blues down toward the horizon where it seemed like there was a lot more of a heavy storm that was moving in. But it's a cool spot up. I think it's on-off highway 126. You take that to the end and then you come into that road that's going to take you down into sisters right before the hoodoo snowpark but you can go up there and there's a number of spots you can get a good view of Mount Washington really beautiful kind of picturesque peak and especially when it's covered in snow like this, it looks almost like the like mount Paramount, you know the one in the movie, the movie and trail. But it was a really cool spot. It's an interesting mountain and it's a cool spot up there there's really happy to have this photograph and a few of the others in the sequence come out the way that they did that it's cool, I appreciate the kind of tonal color of it and just the sharpness the way that that mountain really kind of has a presence in the frame you really get that with that compression of the big lens 1:47 you can see more of my work at Billy Newman photo comm you can check out some of my photo books on Amazon. I think if you look at that Bitly Newman under the author's section there and see some of the photo books on film on the desert, on surrealism on camping and cool stuff over there. We did like a bunch of traveling and we recorded a bunch of stuff which was pretty cool it was kind of a special project so that's what we're gonna be talking about today. But Marina what kind of special work were we doing? 2:20 It was super cool we were doing some 360 video and photo recording 2:27 and it was really cool yeah it was really interesting doing that I did like a little bit of a podcast talking about the idea 360 video and some of the GoPro fusion stuff but yeah, it was really interesting having the GoPro fusion for for a week we rented it and we went around and we shot like a bunch of footage all over Oregon and a whole lot of different spots have a similar like the natural areas that we've been where we've had like the the just it's probably like the more high profile locations for landscapes and a lot of the areas in Oregon so it was really cool getting to run around and maybe be some of the first people to shoot some high end or higher quality 360 footage in those areas. 3:07 Yeah, I think so definitely. I think there's some of the spots we got to the I don't think I really see many regular photos from 3:13 yeah not many people really go there in the first place. Yeah, and really some of those locations were incredibly beautiful like I was thinking about I think about like sisters rock that we did at the end that evening was just so cool but just the the way that the 360 video virtualizes is really interesting to look at it it's kind of a neat kind of optical effect when you get to look out and you get to kind of turn your head and see just sort of this the field of view that you would see if you were experiencing the place if you're traveling there but it's really fun to get to see especially in certain locations you know where you really get to turn your head and see different aspects to the environment that are going on. Yeah there's something going on 3:52 yeah, it was it's really cool what a great job we the GoPro camera does yeah just with the quality of it looks so real and so beautiful 4:02 yeah I was really interested in that and how it was gonna do but but yeah the GoPro fusion is I think the the newest offering from the GoPro camera company and and you know they have they have the regular you know, two dimensional system still too but but the three 3d six system is really interesting. It's not through sight, it's not 3d, but it's a 360 degree spherical image it's well I was talking about an actual rectilinear image that stitch together from two cameras that record 180 degrees of your field of vision, and then that's brought into the computer and stitched with the special software, the fusion Studio software, and it's really interesting how it works but I think this is really pretty new. If I understood right from from like the the invoice and what I understand about GoPros these cameras really have just come out I think it was it was marked as the the like the innovative product of the year at CES this year. So that back in January Pre announced. And I want you know when some some more now it's interesting, but but I think it has really just come out for release in April now. And then so we're probably some of the first people to even rent it from this company that has it available. So it was cool. Yeah, last couple of weeks of May. And yeah, trying some of the new technology out. But the GoPro fusion is probably the most adept 360 camera that's available for consumer use right now. I think there was the other camera, the ryla, which is a 360 degree camera that also has some of the video gimbal stuff that the GoPro has. But really, I think the GoPro is higher end. And there's, it seems like, every time I've not used the GoPro system, I've had a little bit more trouble, but I was really impressed with that works, that's really the only 360 system I've used. There's also the theta camera built by Rico, that is 4k video. And that's a little bit less expensive. I think that's been out for a couple years. But um, but I don't think that's the gimbal system, you missed the stepping kind of image stabilization. 6:01 Man, that made a huge difference for videos, we were able to watch them, I guess you can preview them on your phone with an app. Yeah, just from directly from the camera. And it looks awesome, but you can see the motion for the stepping and stuff a little bit. And it's cool when you process it through your computer. And and see the the effects of everything, 6:28 the full stabilization is really impressive. And it really makes it possible to have like a walking or moving video and 360. And I think I think otherwise given given like the change in access that would happen. You know, like as the camera moves through the 3d field and Z axis changes, or you kind of spin the camera a little bit, then it kind of throws the rest of the axis off is how it would be without stabilization. But with stabilization, you really virtualized in that location, and you kind of independent from the movement of the camera, which is what's really amazing about the way that it's able to do some of the recording which really gives you a much more immersive feel when you're watching the video because you can move the camera independent of any kind of jerky motion that the camera recording had in it, which really makes possible for for videos that are moving I think otherwise. It would almost be nauseating to have video that was moving unless it was on some other kind of gimbal system. Yeah, that's why probably you've really seen only only like kind of standstill videos up into this point that are related to 360 video. And what's really cool about the GoPro 360 is that it really provides you so much opportunity to do moving videos that look really good in this 360 immersive environment in 5.2k. So like when we're compressing down to 4k, it's cool, but oh my goodness, does it take forever on this laptop? 7:51 Yeah, does rendering take so long? 7:54 Yeah, so we had to go in overnight. So it's not a bad I have a MacBook Pro it's like it's a couple years old now but there's really not I mean, there's a few improvements in the MacBook Pro line but not that many in that would have had other problems if I had upgraded anyway, but this one isn't like the top of the line by any means it's capable, but the graphics card I guess in a laptop really crushes through fine in HD video and anything else that I've thrown at it to do editing your final cut, it's amazingly fast compared to the video editing system I would have had like in high school or college or something like that. So I'm impressed with what I can do but I upgraded the final upgraded Final Cut 10.4 which is the version that can handle some of the 360 footage. I also installed the GoPro fusion studio app and really it's the process of stitching the video together that takes the longest time so they're enormous files to start with I think just over the weekend we recorded like 200 gigabytes of files that we put into the onto the drive. Yeah, it was a huge amount of matter. Yeah. And then so those have that's just before anything's done with it. So I guess it's you know, it's a higher quality video but that then has to be stitched together into an even larger file and then that has to be brought into your editor and then compressed or edited or rendered together so all that takes a ton of time and so but rendering the stitching is what seems to take the longest amount of time and if I guess we had to go on all night, I think we got in minutes let's say maybe six minutes of video for about eight hours of rendering something like that but it's a lot of rendering time just for this little computer and you can see it going I have this this program this like I stat monitor program that shows you like what some of your system components are running out but it's just kind of paying my my graphics system on this laptop and so I hear that you really have to have a ton of horse better power to get through a lot of the 360 video maybe that some of this stuff you would win here too but I have to you have to really that's really where having like a higher capability computers is where you see an advantage of doing this level of rendering. 9:59 Yeah, my laptop can't even handle what we're trying to do you need 10:03 minimum eight gigabytes of RAM. And then it helps to have an SSD so you can pull the video through faster, something like that. And then you have to have a dedicated graphics card. I believe in the system and it any gotcha even with the a pretty modern system. It is extremely slow versus, you know, a lot of other kind of editing rendering system that exists right now. But I think it's like, one frame a second. So if you think of like, videos, 30 frames a second. I think it's rendering one frame out a second one, I guess 360 degree spherical frame, or, you know, Echo rectilinear that were that we were learning a little bit about. So after it stitches it together and makes that echo rectilinear image of the to 180s sort of mapped onto our rectangle. Really interesting as doing it. It's fascinating to go through all this stuff. It's really fun to working with the GoPro camera stuff. But so yeah, this weekend, we did like a bunch of travel stuff to try and produce some videos and photos and kind of make like a portfolio for some of our 360 stuff. So we traveled, where was the first place we went, we went to like, say Haley falls. 11:10 Yeah. It's cool. It's beautiful. It was our second time being there. But our first time was just a few days before that. So it was a nice spot. test, which is cool. Yeah. It's long, the Mackenzie River. And it's a really beautiful place. It's waterfall just right off the trail. And it's cool, because you can climb down from the trail. There's a kind of self made trail from I think people. Yeah, fourth down there. Yeah. But it's really cool, just a big waterfall. And it kind of goes into a river that drops off and to another little tiny waterfall. I don't know, if you count as waterfall. It's a waterfall. 11:54 It's, it was really cool. I like I like the way that that looked. And it was interesting kind of learning from that, that's kind of a composition experience for 360 video, or for making a 360 image is sort of being in the bowl of the action, right seems to be kind of an interesting way to produce it, where you have something to look at, let's say if you're mapping it onto the face of a clock, you have something to look at at your 12 o'clock, but also something to look at your six o'clock so that there's a reason to sort of, to sort of pan and move the camera in the frame of the field around. 12:25 Yeah, it's a 360 photo or video. So the point is that you look in every direction. Yeah, and you really want to use it for that. Yeah, there has to be something interesting. 12:36 Yeah, that was interesting about looking at a lot of the let's say the viewpoints that I set up for, let's say that you know, the perspective that would be taken for a photograph, let's say that and those really don't seem to work very well for composing these 360 images. So I guess that's kind of the tip of the thing that I learned pretty quickly is when trying to put it together like you can't be back up against the trail or back up against the road or something like that to kind of view out toward whatever the subject is, let's say that waterfall in this case, because really what you experienced most of is 180 degrees of just to trail and dirt and trees and things that aren't really that that interesting visually to look at. So it's interesting trying to try to mediate all of those different angles that you could look at in a 360 degree view, which is where you really have to think about the method in which you're composing the image a lot to put yourself in a position where there's something pretty at all angles of view that you have isn't it difficult to think you know like in photography you just have to try and worry about getting getting just that little bit to look good in composition but in 360 you have to think about every every field of every part of the field of view. 13:43 Yeah is a fun and interesting additional thing to think about with composing something that's like visual media 13:51 It is really fun but it's a challenge or it's not as interesting a different type of perspective of trying to think of something that looks good it was something that while I was like looking at 360 video a lot of people don't seem to notice that part of it yet. 14:06 Right they'll they'll be like a background that's just a driveway or parking lot. 14:11 Yeah, yeah something like that where we're so that's what I'm seeing like some of the successful the successful arms of 360 video are bringing you into an immersion of it and of course you know of course that's what you do but so it was interesting going through and trying to produce some of that in this way but even with like some of the the company videos that I did like trying to walk through and do like a tour of a retail location that was kind of interesting to do where you know, instead of like maybe skirting the side of the building or something but you just kind of walk right through but it's interesting where you can you can have the view 360 degrees around you. So you really trying to like build an environment where you get to see the perspective is cool. So we went to the Hayley files, we walked the trail around there, which is a place also where I learned the same lesson about composition where the trail is beautiful, out toward the river or out toward a lot bangles. But then the trail is also not that is also kind of just a lot of work, a lot of broken pieces, a lot of a lot of wood and branches and things that aren't really the forest and its beauty. So it's interesting to see that, 15:11 yeah, when you're using it, you really do notice pretty quickly, what is not visually interesting or attractive, 15:18 when you just you see all the places around you, you would not take a picture of, yeah, well, it wouldn't take a picture of that, or that or that or that. That's all in the picture now. So. So it's interesting to kind of consider that sort of stuff. But that's really the the challenge, I guess, in trying to do storytelling, or composition in photography for 360. But it's, it's also possible to like right, like what we were saying we found is getting to that center position, like an area with a creek and a waterfall is really kind of naturally conducive to being compositionally interesting. For some type of 360 VR content we have semi static but comprehensible landscape that you're surrounded by. And then a waterfall it's sort of a natural position where you're gonna have a geographical bowl, where you're sort of set in with it and it's also going to be green around all of your angles, you know, it's blowing water up and it's sort of making everything green. And then you have like the creek that flows out from that that's another piece of motion that you get to look at. So all of this kind of pieces sort of work together where you can look up and see like the forest and stuff around you. So that was a really pretty way to shoot that and it's a really interesting way to kind of look at and visualize what was there and it's fun to see you know, after we do like well this is like this is like what it was when I say so it's really fun. But yeah, I like doing the hike stuff along the river there too. I also like the photos that we got from it there. I was talking about that some of the images just still images that we took Yeah, of course Yeah, there's beautiful areas so just you know, obviously like still liking to take pictures. It was really fun to take photos. Yeah, well you know, the spring snow melt is so crystal clear right now that the water just looks blue. Light luminous blue too. It's cool. 17:03 Yeah, it was really beautiful. Water was really blue and it was so clear. You could see all of the rocks and a lot of the rocks had like moss on them I guess it was green underneath the blue water It was really pretty 17:16 Yeah. Yeah, that was a beautiful spot. So that part of the McKenzie has always been really interesting. And I think they're on the McKenzie on and then I think it's What is it? What is it the maybe the calapooia the citm I don't know the one that goes out from like, like Corvallis, Albany That one's really nice too. Or you know, it's like really mossy and like it just looks foresty that sort of thing looks kinda like a rain forest that most than some of the spots that but yeah, it's beautiful about getting up there. So we traveled the day we went up kind of in the cascade area, route to a bunch of spots. For the longest time I was shooting with Nikon cameras, and I'd always really liked doing that but most of that was always kind of maybe constrained by budget for I think I started with a Nikon D 40 back in 2007 is when I bought it the camera probably came out earlier than that I really enjoyed kind of picking up and that was like an entry level DSLR at the time, and now it's like really antiquated I sold that off now years ago and kind of moved it over into other other camera equipment over time. But that's what I got while I was in college is a really good camera for me to learn on and kind of learn some of the fundamentals of working with a digital camera and I had a lot of fun working with that made it like a ton of photographs with it then pretty soon after that. I tried to switch over to something that was more of a professional body when I was trying to take some of the work that I was doing a little more seriously and when I was trying to get hired as a photographer to do really even just student projects at the time I was trying to get a couple extra lenses and I was trying to get a couple stronger features in the in the camera body that I was using. So at the time I think it was in like 2008 2009 actually I think it was in 2009 I bought my first like professional body that Nikon D two H and at that time, that was already a pretty antiquated camera. I think in 2009 it probably came out in 2003 I think is what it was. So it's already like a pretty big gap in time. There. There's been at that time especially in that decade there's just so much advancement in the way that sensors worked in the way that the scene I wasn't even a CMOS there was like an elb caste is like an lb ca St. Named sensor I don't even know what that is but it was different than the CMR system that would be in a lot of cameras I think that maybe we probably find now or you know like the sensor piece in the back and it wasn't full frame either it was in even the professional and it wasn't full frame it was still like that crop sensor that Nikon had. So it was good for for a long time and I was really happy to use it and happy to kind of learn on that camera they had a ton of features and really I probably go back to that that full professional body of Nikon if if I was just a big any camera that I wanted to use I think like a Nikon D five would be an amazing camera to work with. But at the time what I was trying to do was get a job at a newspaper like the student newspaper when I was going to college and to try and get some jobs or you know trying to get get some activity to try and go and take different photographs in different locations. And that job was great it was cool working for the student newspaper because you get to go to different locations and try and make some interesting photo out of something that's probably not very interesting. It's normally like a person talking to a to a classroom with beige walls and low level ceiling light or something like that every once in a while you get to go to a football game or something like that so that you don't really have the opportunity to go to normally that was really fun that was interesting and it provided me a lot of opportunities to do some some different you know work with different lenses work with different lighting and some sort of you know interesting and dynamic subject matter but a lot of the time like I mentioned it was like I think I had to go photograph that they were removing pipes from a student building on some side of campus I hadn't been to before so it was it was the I was supposed to take a photograph of the absence of pipes didn't really 21:54 make a lot of sense it wasn't really a very interesting photo and there was no people or story around it so it's you know it's always something like that or it seemed to be often something like that. That was just like had almost no subject to take a photograph so it was a challenge in that way. But it was really fun when you got to do something cool so that's that's why I bought that Nikon D two H and then to a company that I think I tried to save up some money in college that was hard for me to do I tried to save up I think like $150 or something like that to buy the 50 millimeter one eight lens that was like the version of nifty 50 that they have over on the Nikon side It was great to use and and that that kit there that the D to H and the the 50 millimeter was what I use to take a bunch of photographs for the next many years is a great kit of a camera to have it worked really well to take I think like a bunch of the cool landscape stuff that he did on the first couple trips they did were just both with that setup. So I bought that I bought that Nikon D to h USD on eBay when I made that purchase of it. And I use that camera probably for the longest amount of time. Like I think I used that up until like around 2013 or so when I was kind of trying to shift away from it. And that's when I was getting into more film photography stuff at that time I actually switched over to a an even or just a different camera a Nikon n 80 film camera because I was I was doing a ton of stuff with with film and film roles at the time. And then I bought a Nikon f4 s another film body camera that was from like the 90s I think is when that one was manufactured. I think it first came out in like 1988 that I've probably mentioned a couple times. Thanks a lot for checking out this episode of The Billy Newman photo podcast. Once a Glacier is a 360 video that visualizes the before and after a glacier melts over the course of a single human life time. Director Jiabao then expanded this piece as a part of a live motion capture dance performance that showed at The ONX + DocLab MoCap Stage at IDFA 2022. I interviewed her at IDFA to talk about the evolution of this project, working with indigenous poet Joan Naviyuk Kane, recording sounds of a melting glacier, and how she wanted to juxtapose geological time with the time of a human lifespan to bring more ecological awareness to the changing world around us.

All That Remains is a surreal embodied adventure through liminal moments that is open-ended enough to leave a lot of room for the audience to project a wide range of associative meaning, memories, or emotions onto it. It is the closest that I've fest to replication a one-on-one, immersive theatre encounter in 360 video. So it makes sense that director Craig Quintero is synthesizing over a decade's worth of insights from experimental theatre in Taiwan into this piece. I sat down with Quintero during Venice Immersive in order to get more context on his process of creating All That Remains, how he directs his actors, and the eschewing of any explicit meaning or narrative in favor of creating a sequence of visceral moments.

I was thinking today I went to my local film store, my local camera store, dotson's here in Eugene. And I dropped off a rule of actie film this 100 speed acti film that I that I recently finished I guess kind of is sometime in junior I finished the role I was shooting a Nikon nav camera with a 50 millimeter lens. I just dropped it off to get it developed. But I don't I don't do the scanning anymore. I kind of got tired of that I wanted to shift over to a more modern digital system. But I like shooting film, I dropped it off at DOT Dawson's they do sort of a 24 hour ish. You know, return time, which is great. It's fantastic. But I said well hey, like do the develop only I don't need the prints. But I do want a digital version. So do a CD print up the CD for me. But now optical media is so rare. I don't have a CD drive, I don't have a CD drive in the house I have I have a computer over here, set aside or like an old desktop computer one that's kind of in the closet, I'm going to pull it out, plug it in, just so I can put the CD in it, get those photos off, put them on a thumb drive and then transfer it over to my computer. So kind of one of those funny things where you think you're in a system and then part of the system starts to get antiquated and made obsolescence and now we're in a place just a few years after the Millennium where optical disk drives all of that stuff, all those trillions of dollars I'm sure that we're invested in creating this technology of optical discs has now become obsolete and kind of turned into something you can hardly use. So it's a kind of a funny system. And that works out but have a CD right now and a set of negatives of some really cool photos that I've taken between March April May of this year that I shot on film so excited to put those up here soon. 2:14 You can see more of my work at Billy Newman photo comm you can check out some of my photo books on Amazon. I think you can look up Billy Newman under the authors section there and see some of the photo books on film on the desert, on surrealism on camping, and cool stuff over there. This image that was a quick screenshot, or a quick capture that we made around the campsite, near Lone Pine, California and the Alabama hills and it was a really cool campsite. I think we stayed there for about, I don't know four to six days or so in November and December of 2012 really cool time of year to be out there. And we were fortunate I think Easter this year in Nevada is we had that rain shadow so that it was just a lot drier on the east side of California than it was on that coastal side of this year in Nevada is when we were there a few weeks before that. But the cool thing about this campsite if you guys were to bother to look it up. It actually matches the broom Hilda seen from Django Unchained. If you were to watch that, we found that out I think right after we camped here at the spot, then we'd watched the movie Django just a few months later. And we're like, whoa, wait a second. We just been to that spot. that exact spot right there right where this picture was taken. I think I think there's a scene where it shows like Jamie Foxx sitting over on the rock that is currently the kitchen table in this scene. But yeah, it's kind of interesting. I think the shot was set up a little different, but it was really cool to see and you're like wow, that's right where we used to be interesting when you find out a spot that you were or something else was filmed and it seems like a remote kind of campsite like this, but I'm sure over the years 1000s of people have been there. 4:01 You can check out more information at Billy Newman photo comm you can go to Billy Newman photo.com Ford slash support. It's this whole threshold of stuff that I've not really worked on in media before, and I've not really, I guess what would it be? Like, I haven't rendered it. I haven't I haven't brought a 360 video file. haven't ever bought a 360 video file into like Final Cut Pro before. So I was trying that out this weekend and I had to upgrade a lot of stuff had to upgrade my Mac to Mac OS High Sierra, which has been out for a long time. But I've been kind of delaying on that because I wanted to, well, I just had a stable system and I try and use my computer for work long time. So I really don't try and do updates that I don't have to do with some stuff. And finally, it's good that I waited six months to put ice on it, but it runs fine and run stable. And really, I was most interested in trying to work on this 360 video project which takes Final Cut 10.4 which is where they bring in some of those features for 360 video and VR editing and production. So it was kind of cool trying to check out but oh my goodness is that 13 inch MacBook mine really struggling when it tries to render out even just one minute of footage or when it tries to render in a 360 graphic elements is supposed to exist. You know it like on a dimensional plane, it's interesting you can put you can like put text out into space in the 3d or the in the three dimensional well not three dimensional but in the 360 space. You can look to the north, let's say and see words that are printed there you know, some kind of graphic that's laid out there and rendered into the frame I guess is what you would call it or into the into the virtual environment. It's just sort of stuck there. And so as you look around as the video elapses, you'll see you'll see this graphic object layered into the frame. And I can only imagine what kind of what kind of processing it takes to really produce some of those effects in the backend it's amazing that we're able to make what is it at queer rectilinear images 6:38 at akwil rectilinear i think is a format I don't know it's one of the format's that, you see that's where you see like the stitching of the two 180 degree images sort of melded together and it's really interesting looking at that footage and I think it's a phone is a pretty effective viewer for it and in the moment but I'm looking at other stuff like the I think it's the gear not the Gear VR, well there's the Gear VR the HTC Vive, there's like the Oculus, I think it's Oculus, right? The Oculus VR there's like a cheap one now. I was really impressed or like it was like $200 it was like 199 to get to get a screen and goggles to do some of this 360 video experience and I'm trying to think about like this business ventures that are sort of attached to this with with a new medium that's sort of approaching like I think a couple years ago was the advent of of aerial drone footage. You know before then you had to get a helicopter and a gimbal and that's $100,000 shot to get to get aerial footage over your property or you know, whatever it is and so now it's it's just so much more possible than it used to be. I remember I remember watching I don't know I think there was like a movie that had this gimbal shot and they talked they talked about in the you know the behind the scenes stuff where they had this cable camera that ran for like 200 yards is sort of swept in and and sort of did this one shot through this long sweeping intro into like this, you know this big opening scene, but they had this big cable camera ran across a football field basically you know, you know whole action field and they pulled this camera across so it'd be this smooth kind of gliding shot that was just a little bit 2030 feet above everyone and they couldn't really pan it with just a crane. So they're talking about technically how they engineer this shot and this is back in I don't know 1999 2000 and now it's just that's an amateur ability where you can get a drone with a gimbal and put it 20 feet in the air and have it follow in for 200 300 feet and have a perfectly still 4k image that the tracks in on a party or you know looks really cinematic or you know any anything like that it's just amazing what kind of options that are now with with the way you're able to develop media so it's cool thinking about just the level or the simplicity that we'll be able to work in rendering or work in producing 360 or virtual reality footage or drone footage 10 years on from now like if you think about it for a moment like 10 years ago it was pretty hard to drop in like high definition footage onto your laptop or computer to like render out about 2008 April 2008 may 2008 that was still like a pretty car there was that it was starting to happen HD or you know amateur Lee recorded HD footage was starting to happen but really it was it was pretty rare to get HD cameras on the market for inexpensive prices. in that era it was still all standard definition stuff I mean while I was in college, doing new media stuff all the camera project or you know all the video projects that we worked on were all in standard def It was really an interesting invention that we switched over to 16 by nine for a lot of the you know the the standard output of a lot of the files that we'd render when I started the first camera like the first camcorder I was really working with was it was a Canon XL one. And like the 2002 2006 seven era and man fantastic camera. I think there was like A lot of documentaries that were put together that you know, is a real workhorse kind of professional camera. And I was really fortunate to be a person in Southern Oregon getting to work with that level of video technology back in the early 2000s. It was really a cool opportunity that I had. And then kind of thinking about that now just the level of like, wow, okay, so we moved on from standard definition, we moved on from the four by three aspect ratio, we moved on from tape media, or from AV capture files, and you know, capture card systems, and so on, that's kind of transitioned into much simpler h 264. Pro res file systems, these digital file systems that are easy to upload easier to write to a computer. And amazing what processors can do now to just in the the level of work that they're able to output. And what's interesting is like this, so 10 years ago, the difficulty of rendering HD footage that we had, that's similar to now 10 years later, in 2018, the difficulty I'm having, trying to render out this 360 degree footage that's, that's been recorded, and it's just so much, you know, you'd imagine it's like an HD video in front of you. Now, this is a 4k video that's all around you. And it's just seems like you know, just seems like dozens more, 11:15 I don't know, just seems like a way bigger file to render, I guess that's really what it is, 4k files are real big. And for this virtual reality 360 thing, it really seems like you need that level of resolution so that when you look in any particular spot, you know, through like a VR headset, you get a full resolution image from that, that single vantage point that you're looking at. And when I was talking earlier about ventures or you know, business ventures that I'd like to incorporate into the 360 video idea, I was really thinking a lot about like, like wedding photography events, or you know, there's, there's wedding videographers. But I think now with, with like the release of the, just this season, the release of the GoPro 360 fusion, which has, I think it's like an integrated digital gimbal support. So as you as you move the camera around through three dimensional space, the camera kind of digital reacts to the motion that you've created. And so it sort of stabilizes that. So I guess considered you're you're walking and you're taking steps and so you kind of have a trot to the the motion of the camera. Well, I guess Apparently, this gimbal is supposed to this digital gimbal doesn't. McCann or it doesn't, you know, work in the real world. But it just, it takes the video file and I guess it's able to gimbal it, whatever that means, but it's able to smooth that out and stitch it together so that, you know you kind of lose a lot of that shakiness to the video, I guess they've had stabilization for years. But apparently they're explaining at least that it might be a different level of it. So it might be an interesting thing to check out. But what I was hopeful to do was, you know, try and do something where you'd you'd record like, a 360 video of let's say, like a wedding ceremony. And then as a as an offer to a bride and groom, you give them a headset, and you give them the 360 experience so that they can either I guess give that to family that wasn't there perhaps really that's just like a Facebook opportunity in a big way like because you can just share those videos. You know, share those videos online and kind of see them digitally through the browser, which is a really exciting thing about social media sharing YouTube 360, Facebook 360. And I think Vimeo 360 are all video sharing platforms where you can you can view that content in a browser. I think chrome works the best for right now I had a lot of trouble in Safari viewing 360 browser stuff but but really interesting stuff. And it's been kind of cool. I was trying to think though Yeah, like, oh, be cool. Yeah, set up for the you know, set up a 360 video. And then years from now, you can come back because a big track, but years from now you can come back and like put on goggles or view just everything that was happening at a wedding, but it's a really immersive experience. I thought it'd be kind of cool. So I guess all that's to say I rented a GoPro 360 fusion, I think it should be here this week. So I'm gonna try and run through and put together like a portfolio of 360 images, and in 360 videos from a lot of the locations. You know, a lot of the natural outdoor landscape locations that I've sort of come to learn about over the last 10 years of doing landscape photography across Oregon in the northwest, so I'm hopeful to try and do that over like the Memorial Day weekend. I think it's going to be kind of fun. Try to hit it hard. Thanks a lot for checking out this episode of The Billy Newman photo podcast. In the aftermath of George Floyd's murder by three police officers on May 25th, 2020, there were Black Lives Matter protests that erupted around the world. Immersive filmmakers Alton Glass and Adam Davis-McGee felt the historic nature of this global movement for racial justice, and they wanted to help document this movement with 360° video in order capture a digital archive of the ephemeral memorials that are being created, but also footage from the frontlines of protests from around the United States. The result is a multi-part series called In Protest, with the first episode that launched on September 16th focusing on Minneapolis & St. Paul, Minnesota, which was ground zero of Floyd's murder.

Why trek up to the Arctic circle to capture 360 footage of the aurora borealis yourself, when you can license stunning footage someone else already shot? That was Alan's thinking when he availed Blend Media of their services, whose founder — Damian Collier — is our guest. Alan: Hey, everyone, Alan Smithson here. Today, we're speaking with Damian Collier, co-founder and CEO of Blend Media, a centralized hub for all things VR and AR content. From stock 360 images and videos, right up to fully customized interactive experiences. All that and more, coming up next on the XR for Business podcast. Damian, welcome to the show. Damian: Hey, Alan. How are you? Alan: I'm so amazing. It's been a long time since we spoke. I think the first time we met was probably four or five years ago, when you started this wonderful journey. How did you get here? Damian: Yeah. Well, I'm just thinking back to a panel that we did at VR LA, which must be at least three, if not four years ago. It must be about that time. Alan: Got to be four years ago, yeah. Damian: It's crazy how time flies. And obviously, having been in VR and AR, we've seen peaks and troughs, and ups and downs, and all in between. Alan: That panel, because it was with-- the one with Saul Rodgers, right? Damian: That's right. Alan: I haven't had Saul on the show, I haven't reached out him. That panel at VR LA, to me, was like the pinnacle of the VR hype. That event was so amazing. And it seems like we kind of took a step back a bit in subsequent years, and now it's starting to pick up again. Damian: Yeah, it was great. It was a big event. But you know what? This week I attended Laval virtually. And I think they had something like ten thousand attendees and dozens, if not up into hundreds of speakers. And I have to say, for me, it really felt engaging. I didn't attend in the headset. I attended it on the web app that they built. But it felt buzzing. It felt-- there were some great presentations and keynotes. Alan: I have to say yes, where was: my wife, Julie Smithson, was one of them. [laughs] Damian: Oh, great. I'm sorry to say I missed Julie's lecture, but I saw some great keynotes. Alan: What was the highlight of Laval Virtual for you? Damian: Well, I think it was reconnecting with people virtually. There were people there that I -- like you -- I haven't seen physically for some time. And seeing their avatars and waving at them across the room, and then kind of setting up separate meetings together, it was really well done. Alan: Amazing. The last time I was on your site, there was Blend Media, and then it ended up being Blend Market, Blend Stock, Blend Studio. Walk us through kind of the progression of where you were when we met, and where you are now and what's what's changed. Damian: Yeah, we started off as just a new footage business, because I am a serial entrepreneur, they say. I have businesses all in the content space. So that is my background, kind of rights management, IP. My last business was a viral video business that I sold in 2014. And I just had this idea when Mark Zuckerberg posted the first 360 video around about November 2015, I just had this idea for creating what I guess would be described as the Getty Images for 360 video. And that was the original idea. And I raised a bit of seed money, built the first platform in the first part of 2016 as a 360 video stock footage site, helping creators monetize their 360 video content through a platform. The top of a wind turbine a hundred stories up from the ground is not the best place to be making mistakes, but making mistakes and learning from them is the whole point of on-the-job training. That’s why VR Vision Inc helps companies produce XR training modules, so trainees can make mistakes in a safe, controlled environment. COO Lorne Fade drops by to talk about it. Alan: Today’s guest is Lorne Fade, co-founder of VR Vision. Lorne is a serial entrepreneur that has built several businesses over the last 15 years. He’s had the pleasure of working with some of the world’s largest Fortune 500 brands and award winning marketing agencies all across North America and Europe. His previous agency, Academic Ads, was acquired, and he went on to found VR Vision Inc. As the co-founder and COO of VR Vision, they’re a virtual and augmented reality startup that’s enhancing immersive training outcomes for some of the world’s largest brands using VR, AR, and AI technologies. He’s also the founder of Reality Well, a healthcare technology platform to improve the quality of life for those living in long-term care facilities. You can learn more about VR Vision by visiting vrvisiongroup.com. Lorne, welcome to the show. Lorne: Thanks for having me, Alan. Thanks. Alan: My absolute pleasure, man. We’ve known each other for quite some time through the VR/AR Association in Toronto, and we shared some booth space together, and it’s always great to see what you guys are working on. I know the last time we saw each other, you were showing me an automotive manufacturing facility in virtual reality and how you were using that. So let’s dive in there. Let’s talk about how you guys are using VR and 360 video to make better training. Lorne: Yeah, that’s that’s one of our bigger use cases with Toyota, where we’re training about 10,000 employees currently using 360 video, in immersive training scenarios in VR. And it works really well for eliminating risk and providing a safe environment with zero harm. And it’s totally immersive. So the employees that are getting trained in VR, no distractions, they can’t be on their phone or anything. It was really simple the way we did it. We just storyboarded various scenarios with Toyota on various processes, on safety concerns, on their assembly lines or processes that were mundane and replicable. And then we went out and filmed with a stereoscopic 3D camera, so when they put on the headset they feel like they’re there, fully 3D. And we mapped out, I guess about two to three minute scenarios, various parts of their assembly lines and filmed it all in full 3D and then ported it over to VR, added some overlays, some voice overs, some touch points and interactivity so that the employees could be trained in a completely immersive environment. Nothing like this is, from my knowledge, has ever been done before. So it’s really cool to have this type opportunity to work on a project like that. Alan: So how are they measuring success? For example, STRIVR is doing 360 video with Wal-Mart and their key performance indicators. They’re measuring training times, how long it takes to train. They’re also testing retention rates. What are the KPIs that you and Toyota decided on, how to measure that? Lorne: Yes. Great question. We developed a in-house analytics engine for tracking where the user is looking, the various touch points of the training scenarios. And every user that uses the platform gets their own log-in, so we track each user, their effectiveness, and how well they’re being trained with the scenarios. And then within the scenarios, there’ll be, let’s say, about 20 interactive touch points for various risks,
