Different from other films on the subject, director Chinonye Chukwu makes a point to never show the lynching, but chooses to focus on the aftermath, particularly Mamie's insistence on an open-casket funeral. Mamie wanted the world to see what white hate looked like, even allowing photographers to take pictures of her son's battered face and body. This decision ultimately transformed her into a Civil Rights pioneer. Today on FilmWeek, KPCC's John Horn sits down with the film's director Chinonye Chukwu as well as the head of Orion Pictures, Alana Mayo, to discuss the process of  bringing ‘Till' to the screen.

Rebecca's directorial debut, What Breaks the Ice (starring Madelyn Cline, Sofia Hublitz, and Lukas Gage) was selected for the Austin Film Society's Artist Intensive, hosted by Richard Linklater, and releases in select theaters and on VOD October 1st.  What you will learn:  Rebecca talks about early inspirations for her film What Breaks the Ice and the theme of moral ambiguity that weaves through the film. [0:00-7:25] The significance of using the Monica Lewinsky scandal from the late 90s as a story-telling device in What Breaks the Ice, and how the lack of technology in that era allowed the story to unfold in a way that would perhaps not be as effective if the film were set in the present day. [7:25-13:53] Why What Breaks the Ice was filmed with a handheld camera for specific scenes and the world that effect created. How Rebecca worked her way up in Hollywood. [13:53-20:24] How a meeting with Diablo Cody inspired Rebecca to make What Breaks the Ice, and the work it took to finance and cast the film. Rebecca reveals why her short film Noodling was one of the best investments she made in herself professionally, and talks about the time it took to complete that project. [20:24-30:27] What it was like to work on Jonathan Demme's concert film Justin TImberlake + the Tennessee Kids, why Demme thought of this film (at least in part) as a “comedy", and what she learned throughout that production. [30:27-37:21] Rebecca's plans for future projects, including an exciting show in the works about the Von Trapp family. Advice Rebecca has for folks hoping to make it in the film and television business. Rob and I got into a marital tift the other night because I made the claim that I never lie.  He didn’t agree.  He contests that I omit details in a way that leads people to believe something that isn’t true. That’s not lying right? That’s just a totally healthy need for people to like me.  So, in our interview with Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead, this plays out something like this, - “I have to tell you, in the first 2 minutes of Synchronic I was totally getting vibes of Midsommar…” and what I was about to say was “THANK GOD it wasn’t like that, because that movie was the WORST” but Moorehead jumped in to let me know that “If I loved Midsommar… I should definitely check out his film “The Endless” to which I replied, “Ooooh… I’ll definitely have to check that out!” But see, I didn’t say what movie or when I would be checking it out…so see? Not a lie. (Edit: It turns out, I've see The Endless...shhh don't tell) A bit about Synchronic Two friends Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan) are best friends and are working as paramedics on the night shift.  They begin to encounter a series of strange deaths and people in hypnotic-like states that they link to a new designer drug, Synchronic. In the mix of all of this Dennis’s daughter Brianna (Ally Ioannides) goes missing and the story unravels the more details about this trending drug and it’s true effects. Time travel! Steve discovers something about himself that motivates him to buy up all the Synchronic in town to protect others, and to take it himself and chronicle how the pill works with different forms of ingestion, how it causes you to time travel with the goal of  discovering what happened to Brianna. A bit about our interview with Justin Benson / Aaron Moorehead Rob was super nervous about talking to the creative duo of Benson and Moorehead because he really admires their collective movie-making skills.  I had only seen parts of two of their previous films, because murder-horror-thrillers always have a way of lulling me into a good sleep.  This isn’t to say I don’t like their movies (I liked Spring), I’m just still an exhausted Mom, at the end of the day. We really enjoyed catching up with Benson and Moorehead. Admittedly, we had a whole bevy of questions for them that we weren’t able to get to because of time constraints, but we hope you enjoy the time with had with this talented duo! Synchronic trailer! https://youtu.be/XGCrg1OAYfs Synchronic releases on VOD October 23rd!

Sweetheart will make you question your survival instincts...  Imagine you're out at sea, partying with your friends when you're forced to abandon ship. You wash ashore on a seemingly deserted island. What do you do first? How do you make shelter, find water, find food? And what happens when night falls?  Coming off the success of his 2016, sci-fi film Sleight, JD Dillard brings us, Sweetheart, a small, intimate horror story that follows Jenn (Kiersey Clemons, Dope) as she works to survive on a deserted island that is also the feeding ground for a deadly, nocturnal sea creature. It's Castaway meets Creature from the Black Lagoon.  Clemons commands the screen as Jenn, a competent and resourceful young woman whose survival instincts immediately kick into high gear. She takes to the island like a fish to water (no pun intended) and uses everything that washes ashore to her advantage. Once she realizes that surviving the island will take more than finding food and shelter, she kicks into high gear like a Doomsday prepper, getting ready to face down whatever goes bump in the night. The biggest question that goes unanswered is what happened in Jenn's life to prepare her to fight monsters.  Sweetheart's intimate setting is a good choice  With a small cast and a contained setting, Dillard has crafted a taut narrative that, unfortunately, leaves little room to explore Jenn's backstory but by the end of the film, there is little doubt that whatever has brought Jenn to this point in her life, she's ready to face whatever obstacles block her path ... and they better be prepared to face her.  Listen to Shanna and Ro talk more about Sweetheart in the audio review and be sure to catch Sweetheart available on Digital and VOD October 22nd. Eight years ago, Father Colin Hampstead oversaw an aborted exorcism that resulted in the gruesome death of seventeen-year-old Jewel Grant, in rural Louisiana. The deceased girl’s older sister, Kayleigh, grew immediately attached to Hampstead and sought him out, at first for grief counseling and then, for much more. Eight years later, Hampstead has left the priesthood and become a celebrated fiction writer, specializing in stories about the occult, and he and Kayleigh, now his wife, have a beautiful daughter and run a well-known bed and breakfast in Savannah, GA. When the couple agrees to host a wedding for one of Colin’s college friends, what begins as a Big Chill-type reunion turns into something much more macabre, as the seemingly omnipresent ghost of her dead sister Jewel compels Kayleigh to engage in bizarre, destructive behaviors that endanger the lives of both her friends and herself.
