Sean and Amanda start the show by briefly reacting to the box office performance of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps' and wondering whether or not superhero movies will ever return to the levels of the MCU golden days (1:39). Then, they bring in Andy Greenwald to discuss Netflix's newest animated success, ‘KPop Demon Hunters,' which they were initially skeptical of but eventually became charmed by, and they hypothesize what makes a big cultural hit in 2025 (4:46). Next, Sean and Amanda unpack the new slasher legacy sequel ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,' starring Madelyn Cline and Chase Sui Wonders, which they found incredibly condescending. They talk through why they found the script, performances, and kill sequences to be deeply unsuccessful (38:28). Finally, they reflect on what many consider to be the weakest decade of the horror genre and create their 1990s Horror Movie Canon (1:04:59). In the original I Know What You Did Last Summer, some very '90s teenagers are targeted by a killer clad in fisherman's garb and armed with a hook. Nearly 30 years later, a new sequel fires up a very similar plot. The movie includes a new group of young people — including Chase Sui Wonders and Madelyn Cline — and a few key survivors from the first go-'round (Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.) But does it live up to the legacy of the original?Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

This horror sequel was written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, is the 4th film in the franchise but is a direct sequel to the 1998 film, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”. The film stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers & Sarah Pidgeon. Returning to the franchise are original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt & Freddie Prince Jr. In this film, a group of friends are driving to the city for the Fourth of July celebration but on the way, they cause another to swerve off the road and a cliff and then swear to secrecy to never mention what happen. One year later, one of them receives a note stating, “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. The film began planning in 2014 when Mike Flanagan was brought on board for a 4th film that did not tie in to the other films but ultimately left the project when different plans fell through. This film comes after Robinson's failed attempt to get this film as a series in 2021 and began production in 2023.

Welcome back to Brunch with Desb! Today, we have a very special episode because I am joined by my one and only sister, Michaela! She has not been on the podcast since March 2023 so buckle up because we have a lot to talk about. From Taylor Swift to Pete Davidson, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Britney Spears, we are rounding up the latest celeb stories and pop culture moments. Besides this, we are also chatting about why Michaela is taking a little break from social media, including the toxicity of TikTok. As I'm sure many of you know, TikTok has really become a negative place filled with bullies and trolls, so Michaela and I will discuss how it's affected our mental health and why it was important for us to leave the platform altogether. Last but not least, we'll also provide a little life update about our families, kids, and more! Keep listening! Si & Veronica are back for a packed week of premieres for episode 283! Gerry is going to test our tear ducts and emotions each week, we are calling it! He started his journey to love with some predictably corny and adorable limo entrances. Patty referenced her son Matt's run as the Bachelor but that wasn't enough to keep her around for another week! Gerry pulled out the moves to get a kiss from Theresa for her 70th birthday. Faith's motorcycle entrance and serenading won her the first impression rose. We also hit the beach again with quite the star-studded cast of some multi-show veterans and barely there cast members. Kylee is crowned the first hot commodity and a love triangle with her, Olivia, and Will formed after Will and Olivia have a toe sucking convo and make out but then Kylee takes him on a date. Karma is served hot in paradise, so we will see how Aven's entrance shakes up that dissolving triangle! Some former BIP couples had some updates this past week with Becca and Thomas' baby son being born, Michael A. and Danielle having a messy breakup, and Caelynn and Dean getting married. (Bachelor/reality TV talk ends at time marker 32m:49s) Catch Taylor Swift on the sidelines for the Kansas City Chiefs game this weekend as she is seemingly dating Travis Kelce (and using ranch with her chicken tenders). Pete Davidson is also off the market and is dating Madelyn Cline from “Outer Banks”. Usher will be the 2024 Super Bowl halftime performer. Katy Perry made a cool $225 million on her music catalog. Meanwhile, Veronica is going “Yikes!” to her ex Russell Brand being accused of multiple counts of sexual assault and abuse. Veronica also went “Yikes!” to the continuation of the divorce and custody battle between Sophie Turner and Joe Jonasl, where Sophie is suing Joe for seemingly holding the girls passports so they can't go to England with their mom. For lack of a better phrase: holy actual fuck. This Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce situation is A LOT to handle (in the best way possible) and Emma & Julie physically could not wait to dive in.
